Oh my: U.S. follows Bin Laden killing with drone strike on Awlaki

First The One spikes the ball at Fort Campbell, then he throws deep for the end zone in Yemen. This time the pass was incomplete. Old and busted: “Obama is a Muslim.” The new hotness: “Obama is a Muslim-killing machine.”
This week is the week we settle all family business.
The attack appears to be unrelated to intelligence information taken in the raid that killed bin Laden, whose death was confirmed by al Qaeda Friday in a statement that vowed to continue attacks on Americans…
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been more forthcoming with information on Mr. Awlaki since he has faced major protests in his country, a U.S. official said. Mr. Saleh has sought to use that information in a bartering effort to gain more support from the U.S., the official added. The White House has backed an Arab proposal that would ease Mr. Saleh from office…
Yemen officials said the U.S. fired twice at Mr. Awlaki in two attacks spread over about 45 minutes. In the first, the U.S. fired three rockets at a pickup truck in which Mr. Awlaki and a Saudi national and suspected al Qaeda member were traveling outside the village of Jahwa, located some 20 miles away from the Shebwa provincial capital, according to local residents and the Yemeni security official.
Two Yemeni brothers, who were known by local residents for giving shelter to al Qaeda militants, rushed to the scene of the attack. Mr. Awlaki switched vehicles with them, leaving the two Yemenis in the pickup. A single missile from the U.S. rocket then hit the pickup truck, killing the Yemenis inside.
It was the first U.S. airstrike in Yemen since 2010 and the first U.S. drone strike since 2002; unlike the Bin Laden raid, the local government was in on this one. I’m intrigued by the idea of the Arab Spring pressuring dictators into selling out the jihadis in their midst in order to shore up U.S. support. Why they’d care about U.S. support given the limits of our regional influence these days, I’m not quite sure. But … perhaps we could arrange a similar deal with Assad? The White House issued a statement late today slamming Syria for new violence against protesters and threatening “additional steps” if they don’t stop. A week ago I would have taken that to mean more sanctions, but the way The One’s going, maybe he’s planning to have a CIA operative show up and shoot Assad in the eye while he’s getting a massage, Moe-Greene-style.
Via Tapper, here’s a little behind-the-scenes spiking o’ the ball from the White House video team showing Obama and Biden, among others, reacting after the Bin Laden raid. Skip ahead to 3:20 for the good bits. As for Awlaki, this is a useful moment to remind readers that he happens to be a U.S. citizen and yet remains under threat of assassination by the CIA and military. Obama’s motives in neutralizing Al Qaeda in Yemen are good, but whacking an American on the say-so of the president is an awful precedent to set. At the very least, they should resolve to use commandos to try to capture him instead of an indiscriminately lethal weapon like a Hellfire missile that would surely kill him. Now that Saleh is being extra-cooperative in helping us target him, we should have no problem getting a special ops team in. The only reason I can think of as to why the White House would prefer drones to troops is — well, just read Jeff Greenfield’s alternate history of the Bin Laden raid. All will become clear.

broadly speaking, i’m for a forceful response to terrorism, even if it means increased surveillance, targeted killings, and indefinite detention in certain cases. considering the nature of the threat we’ve been facing, you can’t fault the bush administration for taking those steps.

Thank you for the links.
You sound downright libertarian today. And some love for Bush, even! To display my happiness, I’ll quote someone else.
I’m not a big fan of generalizations, but for the sake of simplicity: You would agree that the left has been forcefully against the things you just cited until very recently, yes?
BadgerHawk on May 7, 2011 at 10:15 AM
yes, but the left is not monolithic. many, like glenn greenwald, are just as critical of obama as they were of bush. some others are really just being partisan, but that’s not at all unique to the left.
sesquipedalian on May 7, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Very true. Each side has its fair share of mindless partisans. I like to say that neither party has a monopoly on crazy.
I do seem to recall, however, that you were pretty quick to start doing a partisan victory dance after we killed OBL, even going so far as to quote friendman with a “suck on this, wingnuts”.
BadgerHawk on May 7, 2011 at 10:37 AM
after years of listening to how obama apoligizes, bows to enemies and coddles terrorists, it was hard to contain my glee. i also predicted it…
sesquipedalian on May 7, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Heh. Timely, too.
“sesquipedalian on December 8, 2009 at 10:18 PM”
Better than no prediction, I guess.

The thing that really blew about how you guys reacted to us killing OBL was the fact that we were all in a gleeful state too.
I was literally giddy the whole day, and if a pollster had called me an hour after I found out I would have said I approved of the President. That’s how happy I was.
But instead of electronically jumping up and down with most of us (there were some douchebag commenters from the right on that thread, to be fair), you guys tried to rub people’s noses in it. It was very uncool, especially given that the tactics used to get him were things that the right is generally supportive of.
Seriously, though, he does bow to a lot of people. What’s up with that?

Obama instinctively knows that he’s an inexperienced kid. He’s reflexively deferring to his elders in hopes that they’ll let him sit at the big table.
But nobody looks more out of place than Obama in the company of military commanders.

fair enough. not my best moment.
it’s a small gesture, a show of respect. when you’re the most powerful leader in the world, you can afford it.
sesquipedalian on May 7, 2011 at 12:28 PM
After the surge in Afghanistan, troops still in Iraq, the Patriot Act still in place, Gitmo still open, KSM headed for a military tribunal, the attacks on Libya, the hit on Bin Laden and now the attempted killing of Awlaki…still the anti-war crowd that wailed and screamed for almost the entirety of President Bush’s two terms are silent.
Proof positive that they were not motivated by principle but by partisan hatred of President Bush. We can thank Obama not just for giving the order to get Bin Laden but for revealing the rank hypocrisy of those Left-wing protesters.

We all have our off days.
I can afford women’s clothing. It doesn’t mean I should be buying it.
I think it would be better to show himself as strong but humble. While he may simply be trying to convey respect, bowing isn’t something we typically do in American culture, so it tends to make him look weak. But that’s just my opinion.

All of a sudden this is all OK now.
The double standard & swift turnaround to ‘civility’ discussing this issue is astounding.
