Obama decides not to give speech at Ground Zero

posted at 2:48 pm on May 5, 2011 by Allahpundit

Wasn’t he expected to speak when the event was first announced a few days ago? Why, I believe he was: “The president is scheduled to deliver a speech, tour the site and meet privately with family members, an administration official said.” He did speak briefly today after meeting with members of the FDNY — you’ll find video of that below — but that’s not what the White House had in mind initially, I think. The way Mark Knoller phrases it, it sounds like Obama did intend to give an address at Ground Zero and then changed his mind.

I wonder why. Could be that he simply decided that using GZ as the backdrop for a speech would be in poor taste no matter the occasion; in that case, David Plouffe and Axelrod must still be weeping from disappointment as I write this. Or it could be that he felt boxed in by his decision not to release the Bin Laden photos on grounds that “we don’t need to spike the football.” An “Osama’s dead” speech in the footprint of the Trade Center would have been the ultimate ball-spiking, however solemn his tone. He might as well have rolled out a poster-sized photo of the Bin Laden head shot and posed in front of it giving the thumbs up.

Here’s the wreath-laying and the firehouse meet-and-greet. The money line: “When we say we will never forget, we mean what we say.” As for why Bush chose to skip the event, the Daily News quotes on anonymous source as saying he’s annoyed that O won’t give more credit to the intelligence apparatus that he built. Laura Bush says that isn’t true, though. Dubya’s lying low to stay out of the public eye and to defer to Obama in official ceremonies like this. Understandable and creditable, but a joint wreath-laying would have been a memorable moment.

AP Source: Obama to meet some from bin Laden raid

$100 bucks the Navy will not allow Obama or his orbiting henchmen to know the true identities of these brave men. Any khaki uniform will get this mission accomplished.

I finally figured out who Obama really is…

the gop leadership should thank Obama for not giving a victory speech at ground zero. And for rethinking trying to make the OBL killing a politcal partisan issue.

but they ar etoo stupid to call Obama out for his stunning turn around on th e speech base don the polls. So they won’t hammer Obama for this.

@INC, thank you for posting the link at realclearpolitics. This MUST go viral. This is who BHO is; a socialist/communist who has surrounded himself with them his entire life. He’s also a staunch believer in black liberation theology and hates this country and everything about it. His actions today with Deb Burlingame is a stark reminder that the media, congress, and those who voted for and continue to hold this man up as a god are to be held accountable for what he is, has done, to this great nation.

We must be forever vigilant in our fight for freedom and in 262 days place a true leader, a lover of our country, the constitution, and all of it’s magnificient history, who will be of, for, and by the people. Do NOT let what is happening fool you. The “shiney objects” out there are a smokescreen to everything that is going on; the economy, the dollar crashing, unemployment skyrocketing again, food and energy prices climbing, foreign countries buying up gold, net neutrality, cap and trade, oil and coal exploration limitations, and on and on it goes.

It’s time for America to stand up yet again and reclaim what our forefathers and mothers so valiantly fought for all those years ago. We ARE a great nation and we MUST not let a small group of individuals tear us down.

Again, the Burlingame video can be seen here:

I could see Teh Won tokin’ on a joint, but not Dubya. And yes, it would have been memorable.

What more could the GOP leadership do to Obama, that he isn’t more capable of doing to himself?

September 19th, 2001, then-Illinois State Senator Barack Hussein Obama issued the following statement to his local newspaper in Hyde Park, Illinois about the Islamic Terrorist Attack on Septemer 11th, 2001.

…We will have to make sure, despite our rage, that any U.S. military action takes into account the lives of innocent civilians abroad. We will have to be unwavering in opposing bigotry or discrimination directed against neighbors and friends of Middle Eastern descent. Finally, we will have to devote far more attention to the monumental task of raising the hopes and prospects of embittered children across the globe-children not just in the Middle East, but also in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and within our own shores.

kingsjester on May 5, 2011 at 4:02 PM

Hi, KJ. Thanks for posting the above quote.

Realizing I’m not always the sharpest tool in the shed, can you…or anyone at HA…explain to me WTF was Blowhard Obama yakking about when he mentioned “embittered children across the globe”?

Sheesh. Even back then he couldn’t offer a simple word of condolence to the families who lost their loved ones that day.

I think Obama is in a quandary of sorts. He likes the idea of Bush and America seeing he was the guy who got Bin Laden, but he doesn’t really like the idea of Iran and the rest of the Middle East and all his Muslim friends that he wants to impress seeing he was the guy who got Bin Laden.

JellyToast on May 5, 2011 at 5:48 PM

Meanwhile back at the ranch:

Gasoline demand fell as motorists paid more at the pump, a trend reinforced by industry and government studies released this week. On Thursday, worries about the job market ahead of Friday’s key employment report added to concerns about fuel demand

You are so right.

This doesn’t exactly “endear” him to the groups he is supporting in the Middle east.

Roy Rogers on May 5, 2011 at 5:50 PM

Obama’s not one to “spike the football” after a victory (or after killing Osama bin Laden), but it seems his campaign team (or some of his ardent supporters) doesn’t feel the same way. Check out http://www.gutsycall.com — it redirects users to Obama’s campaign website, http://www.barackobama.com. Could it be that his reelection campaign made this call? Or is it just a couple of his most steadfast supporters?

According to this domain lookup website, the website was purchased yesterday, May 4. The purchaser, though, remains anonymous.

A memorable event? No, more like a chance for Obama to try and upstage the man who DOES deserve to take a victory lap. I don’t believe Barry’s “spike the ball” B.S. for one minute. I think he had every intention of giving himself a big victory speech at Ground Zero, but obviously someone with a brain intervened. Probably Panetta.

JellyToast on May 5, 2011 at 5:48 PM

His entire political persona is a “quandary” — a clash between who he really is and what he must present to the public. This is why it’s so important for the GOP to nominate an unequivocal character — that is to say, not a RINO.

Only this contrast will shock the American people into realization.

You got that right. He’s never going to eat lunch in Cairo again. But his ego got the best of his lefty ideologue, and he just couldn’t resist saying “I directed this operation.” Oops! He just fingered himself (metaphorically speaking).

I believe he was talking about children living in poverty, embittered by the harsh reality of their lives. In other words…a “share the wealth” moment. Notice how he mentioned “our own shores”?

kingsjester on May 5, 2011 at 6:15 PM

I think someone in the Obama administration realized that you need a “Mission Accomplished” sign to have a “Mission Accomplished” moment that will come back to haunt him. There’s also the whole hypocrisy thing where he said he didn’t release the photos of Bin Laden because it would be like spiking the ball, well what do you think a little pep rally at Ground Zero would be seen as?

Daemonocracy on May 5, 2011 at 6:21 PM

I think he blew off the speech because he dissed George Bush in it and when GW refused to be there it took all of the fun out of it for him.

mathscience41 on May 5, 2011 at 6:26 PM

I’m glad that GWB decided not to attend Obama’s photo op as that would have lent some legitimacy to it. History will sort things out for GWB, but I’m pretty sure that Obama will be on the wrong side of fence. Worst president ever. He would have just given another, “Me, myself, and I.” speech anyway.

twhfan on May 5, 2011 at 7:49 PM

Well, HELLO, duh, no teleprompter..

reshas1 on May 5, 2011 at 8:36 PM

AP, the reason why Obama backed out is due to his brain – Valarie Garrett – finally being broached by good advice. With both Bush and Clinton declining, someone realized that Obama would take flack were he to do what he always does, namely, take credit for others work and blame others for his work. Someone realized that the stage was far too big for Obama alone.

bains on May 5, 2011 at 8:56 PM

Maybe Barry backed away from speechifying because he finally realized if he is seen as the killer of Bin Laden, he just put a huge bull’s eye on his back. I don’t think the possibility of Islamic revenge ever ocurred to him. We may see far fewer public appearances for awhile.

teacherman on May 5, 2011 at 9:22 PM

Let’s quit telling Barry how he makes a fool of himself when he takes credit for everything up to and inlcuding the Sun rising every morning. Let the fool talk as much as he wants – it demonstrates what a nacissistic ass he is better whan we ever could!

drunyan8315 on May 5, 2011 at 10:05 PM

He didn’t give a speech because he didn’t have W to insult and embarass. Period.

drjohn on May 6, 2011 at 8:00 AM

enginemike on May 6, 2011 at 12:48 PM

The pResident is not capable of extemporaneous speech or substantive debate. He is being propped up by his handlers…as is becoming more and more obvious.

The Zero cannot survive a substantive, questions-not-submitted-in-advance debate with any other candidate, because he lacks knowledge and does not care about America. There is no way that he can avoid exposing his weakness and total inability to lead toward greatness and prosperity.
