Video: Lindsey Graham on Right to Work States

posted at 12:00 pm on May 4, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

Lindsey Graham has been taking the lead on a number of labor issues lately, hitting back against the NLRB and working to support Right to Work options for the states. In the video below he provides some of the background and the need for these actions by Congress, as well as calling out the dangers of stifling job growth through excessive federal interference.

As far as the pending Right to Work legislation goes, the senator makes one important distinction which should not be lost in the shuffle. They aren’t seeking to force Right to Work status down the throats of any states not choosing it. They’re trying to protect the option for states to do so if they wish, and to be able to do so without fear of retaliation from Washington. It’s very similar to his description of the ideal Right to Work process itself. Nobody is saying you can’t have a union at your place of work. They’re simply assuring the rights of employees to have a vote in a secret ballot when deciding and not face punishment for their choice. You want a union? You get a union. If you don’t, then you won’t.

This is pretty simple stuff, and I’m continually amazed at how complicated politicians and union activists manage to make it as they fight their battles in the media. It’s all about choices, not DC dictates from on high. And these are precisely the types of choices best left to the workers, the employers, and the state governments where absolutely necessary. Take the time to watch Graham’s speech. It’s a good one.

Unions and dems use distraction & confusion as a tool. They mire voters down until they finally give in.

Progressive/Socialist politicians, union activists, media. Not much to distinguish one from another now, is there?

Flimsy Graham is on the right side of this issue because the NLRB is trying to prevent Boeing from building planes and providing jobs in his state of South Carolina. I wonder what SC’s other Senator (Jim DeMint) has to say on this issue?

Including Washington State, whose unions are complaining about Boeing going to South Carolina.

Steve Z on May 4, 2011 at 12:13 PM

Isn’t Lindsey from South Carolina? And didn’t the Obama Administration just block Boeing from building a new plant in South Carolina, making them build it in Washington because SC is Right to Work, and Washington is controlled by the unions? That, also, should not be lost in this shuffle.

What right does D.C. have to tell ANY corporation where to build a plant? Now if the regs are too strenuous in one state and another state seems a better fit, okay. But D.C. shouldn’t have the power to TELL a corp where they can locate and where they can’t. I can’t believe Nikki Haley isn’t out there screaming about this.

Silly conservatives, choice only matters when it comes to abortion.

How is it fair that American citizen workers can decide for themselves whether to be forcibly unionized and have dues forcibly taken from them? It’s not, and the federal government should step in to assure that people are unionized for their own good whether they like it or not.

Graham’s seizing on a big issue that has a high profile in SC. Good for him, but it could end up getting him reelected.

Bat Chain Puller on May 4, 2011 at 12:37 PM

Where is crr6, I hope she watches this whole video. Lindsey Graham totally demolishes the Boeing complaint. Grahm is a lawyer and he knows the NRLA.

Also he reminds everyone that Bill Daley was on the Board of Boeing when that Board voted unanimously to build the plant in South Carolina. So, either the President decided that this NLRB argument is frivolous, or he appointed as his Chief of Staff a man who knowingly violated the NLRA.

Tim_CA on May 4, 2011 at 12:41 PM

This man is just icky. He’s such a wiener I can’t stand to hear him talk.
He’s damn lucky he has this to talk about.
Probably will get him reelected.
This is what the founders intended.
Each state acting as an individual laboratory of governement.
ND as a right to work state has been attracting lots of businesses.
IDK how it went in the legislature (which is over now), but they were trying to lower the extraction tax for oil to be more competitive. MT & SD have lower values & we are I think the highest in the nation.
I know a lot of our economic success does come from the Bakken.
But that is not all of it.
Businesses of all kinds have relocated here from what I gather bcs of the atmosphere.
We are just so small that it is hard to get enough employees. Businesses have had to actually close down bcs they can’t get workers.
ND does have a harsh climate, but it isn’t that bad.
With high national unemployment, I find this so ironic.

Wow, seething hatred sure can distort one’s view of reality.
Graham gave a brilliant, effective summary of the issues within the time he was given.
Just because you disagree with someone on one issue shouldn’t lead to hatred of an ally. Graham is one of us.

And in the process accuses his own chief of staff of illegality!

The plant is under construction and the NLRB is trying to pull the rug out from under Boeing for moving to a right-to-work state.

SC.Charlie on May 4, 2011 at 1:18 PM

The NLRB isn’t just going after SC (and the jobs Boeing is trying to bring there).

The NLRB is also suing AZ and SD over our state constitutional provisions that require secret ballots for employees voting on whether to unionize or not.

The union thugs who populate the NLRB (several of whom obtained their positions due to recess appointments by Obama) want to strip away the right to a secret ballot so that fellow union thugs know which workers to target. It’s despicable — and it has gotten very little media attention.

The NLRB also reversed, with no notice or opportunity for comment, a previous ruling that mortgage loan officers were not subject to overtime rules. As a result, every major bank and mortgage company in the U.S. has been hit with a class action lawsuit demanding billions of dollars in back overtime pay for its loan officers. Top loan officers often work 50-60 hour weeks and most of their pay has been commissions, but now the NLRB says they have to be paid overtime if they work more than 40 hours. The industry has filed for a TRO to stay this ruling until it can at least be reissued with notice and comment.

This is by far the most anti-business Administration in history.

rockmom on May 4, 2011 at 1:50 PM

Does Obama have union dues deducted from his presidential salary? He is the first president who is TOTALLY OWNED by the unions. What these illiterates can’t comprehend is if you punish producers from producing, one of the first results is less jobs produced. Union are cutting their own throats by attacking businesses for more than their revenues can compensate them for. The film Atlas Shrugged. Obama is Maus.

Badger40 on May 4, 2011 at 2:08 PM

It was done very stealthily by the NLRB. The media are not interested in anything but demagoguing when it comes to banks and mortgage lenders. But I can tell you it came totally out of the blue and stunned the banks. The industry spent years getting the NLRB to finally rule on this issue in 2007 after many lawsuits and conflicting legal opinions. It was not a partisan ruling issued by “the Bush people” either; NLRB rulings in previous administrations had not been subject to much politics and most of the rulings came from the General Counsel.

This acting GC at NLRB now is extremely left-wing and extremely political. He has done all sorts of stuff that should not be tolerated. And he has never been confirmed by the Senate or had to testify at a single hearing since he was installed at NLRB.

Meanwhile, Graham is also doing this: Dems Go To The Filibuster Mat For John J. “Jack” McConnell, Jr.

“McConnell is very, very controversial because he donated several hundred thousand dollars to Democrats, made inflammatory anti-Republican statements, engaged in dubious lead paint litigation which was thrown out of court, and has refused to release records regarding a questionable settlement in one of his lead paint cases.

McConnell is the first District Court nominee ever opposed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Ever. That should tell you something.

McConnell passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote, with the exception of Lindsey Graham, who voted in favor.”
