The Story Shifts on the Abbottabad Raid; UPDATE: Carney Revises Again, Says There Was “Resistance” from bin Laden

posted at 1:20 pm on May 3, 2011 by Jimmie Bise, Jr

According to The Politico, the White House has a couple revisions to the story it told us yesterday of what happened inside Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad. The most notable change thus far to the story we heard yesterday from Deputy National Security Adviser John Brennan and the Pentagon is that bin Laden didn’t pick up a gun and join the fighting.

However, during a background, off-camera briefing for television reporters later Monday, a senior White House official said bin Laden was not armed when he was killed, apparently by the U.S. raid team.

Another White House official familiar with the TV briefing confirmed the change to POLITICO, adding, “I’m not aware of him having a weapon.”

“The bottom line is the team that entered that room was met with resistance and took appropriate action,” said a third American official.

And that’s fine. I don’t think most Americans care if bin Laden was holding a gun when the SEALs dropped him or not. I certainly don’t. I might care a little bit that the woman killed in the raid wasn’t actually bin Laden’s wife, but only a little bit. It’s obvious to me that part of his strategy for fighting the free world has involved hiding behind women and children at every turn, so I’m not shocked to learn that he found a few who were more than willing to hang out at Chez Osama to serve as potential battle furniture when the inevitable reckoning time came.

However, these new revelations might just cause the President a little bit of woe. Already, there is a growing rumble of discontent that the President gave a “kill order” and not the lesser-used “treat pleasantly and invite back for a little brunch followed by a gentle Q&A session order”. While the big guns like the ACLU and Human Rights Watch have yet to weigh in, there’s no doubt that these revisions to the official account could give them more than sufficient reason to do so, given how quickly they’ve done so in the past. I can’t imagine that the anti-war left will stand quietly for much longer while President Obama does a victory lap for snuffing an unarmed old man no matter how much they may want him re-elected. If you’re looking for a sinister reason for why the administration might have put out bad information, that’s about the best one I can imagine.

I’m sure we’ll get the full and accurate story in time; a story this momentous simply must be told. Perhaps by then John Brennan will have had time to get his part of the story straight. I hope he does, considering that he had one of the dozen best views of the entire situation (excluding, of course, the SEALs themselves) and access to the after-action briefing reports.

UPDATE: Jay Carney is in the middle of a press briefing right now (which I can’t see because I don’t have access to a television) with a revised raid timeline. Accorind to the Twitter feed of CNN’s National Security Desk, bin Laden’s wife “rushed” the SEAL and was shot and wounded. After that, bin Laden himself resisted then in some way and they shot him dead. If the White House puts up a transcript in a timely fashion, I’ll post the link here so you can see the narrative for yourself.

One last thing, which is more or less a speculative editorial comment. I think today’s awkward and late in the day adjustments to the official story will feed a “deather” conspiracy theory the White House really doesn’t want to get any larger than it is right now. Stacy McCain doesn’t think it’s that big a deal and he may well be right, at least right now. But given that the White House just last week had to deal publicly, and with not very good grace, with a Birther conspiracy theory that started with a small fringe group, I would think the President would be careful not to hand a new cause du jour to a new small fringe group.

Why is Shrillary allowing her Dept. of State to leak these conflicting stories?

SouthernGent on May 3, 2011 at 3:04 PM

I have said since Day 1 – the military took out OBL, then Obama was notified. The “war shot” photo is complicity (including the blurred image for nice touch) for BS cover and the WH has changed the story 3 or 4 times now – as in not first hand…

The fact he thanked intelligence and Panetta out of the gate – and not the military – was a stark contrast to yesterdays CMOH ceremony – where he thanked Gates twice.

Also explains the Comedian/Tiger Woods schtick over the weekend.

That has been common knowledge in many circles. BO and MO consult with Jarrett on everything. With Bill Daley in the picture the scuttlebutt is that Jarrett is getting a well-deserved smack down with the intention of saving face for the Dems. INOW, Dem insiders know that BO is a complete failure. He isn’t even a convincing puppet. It’s so bad that Daley was brought in to ‘save’ the Dem party.

The whole thing couldn’t be more FUBAR. The bottom line is that they’re only interested in maintaining power in DC. The rest of us will have to manage as best we can.

joejm65 on May 3, 2011 at 3:07 PM

Not at all. If the people in the photo were watching this in real time but had no clue what was happening, then what’s the point of having the feed there?

Either the feed is useless or the feed is clear enough to be able to tell if OBL had a gun.

angryed on May 3, 2011 at 3:02 PM

That’s a false dilemma argument if I’ve ever heard one. They had a clue as to what was happening but they can’t have all the operators cams on at once (40 SEALs + CIA). Even cycling thru all the cams on everyone in the building would have limited the time on each cam and the opportunity to catch every bit of action. From the reports I’ve seen, they received radio confirmation of OBL’s death not visual. They have to rely on statements from the SEAL’s to determine what happened in the room/hallway…..

What you are seeing is the ‘fog of war’, nothing more and nothing less. Even with video cameras on helmets and guns (and I do hope that stuff gets released, it will give the gaming community a windfall unlike any other), there will always be the chaos that is warfare: smoke, screaming, gunfire, people expiring, people perspiring, and then some unpleasantness with red stuff.

If you can’t get the calls right with instant replay and super slo-mo, then don’t expect reports on military action to be all that precise. You do get a final score at the end… start with reporting that and the beginning which you should have a real good idea of what was going on… then try to figure out the middle part. There are some battle reports from wars long over that we still can’t make head nor tail of, like Gettysburg. Arnhem. Fallujah. That is simply the ‘fog of war’ in action.

docflash on May 3, 2011 at 2:21 PM

First of all, I agree with you. Second of all, just because OBL didn’t have a gun didn’t mean he wasn’t a threat. The SEALS could have thought that he was wearing a suicide vest, or that he had a remote that could detonate bombs which would level the compound. If our troops said ‘hands in the air’ in a language OBL could understand and he didn’t comply, then that should be grounds enough for blowing his brains out.

If the regime knew OBL’s whereabouts since last August, what the he!! took so long. Seems as if our dear leader was dithering again or still.

dogsoldier on May 3, 2011 at 3:11 PM

I don’t believe there was a 40 minute firefight. The firefight, plus searching and securing the grounds, took some time, and then the troops ransacked the place for evidence (computers, discs, and such). I would imagine that they’d have to tread carefully through the compound to make sure it wasn’t booby trapped. Hopefully, a timeline will be provided at some point, as long as it doesn’t revel information that would compramise future missions.

joejm65 on May 3, 2011 at 3:16 PM

and yeah, since the WH watched play by play in the situation room, what was the big deal about getting the story straight the first time

Last year I decided to write a detailed description of a 72 minute video of actual human activity. It took me more than a week to produce a first draft, and even then I kept seeing additional details that I hadn’t noticed the first times around.

I think you’re jumping to conclusions on scant evidence. There’s a big difference between lying and being mistaken. Psychologists have proven that eyewitness testimony is incredibly unreliable, and that’s what we are getting from those who watched the raid unfold.

I can’t imagine that the anti-war left will stand quietly for much longer while President Obama does a victory lap for snuffing an unarmed old man no matter how much they may want him re-elected.

Probably won’t matter. How many video tapes did this “unarmed old man” put out saying what he would do to us in the future AFTER his goons killed nearly 3,000 Americans on 9/11? Probably at least 95% of the American people wanted bin Laden dead, and even if Obama ordered him killed, who would the anti-war left vote for instead? A Republican that wanted bin Laden dead?

Let’s cut the crap about the “old man” Bin Laden–he was born in 1951, so he met Allah and his 72 virgins at the ripe old age of 60, meaning that he was younger than Moammar Qaddafi, who is still fighting and killing his own people in Libya.

They say {whoever they are} that the actual fight was over quickly and most of that time was spent looking for computers and other kinds of information. It is hard to believe that Osama would be in a compound with an 18 foot tall fence and not have more fire power.

People keep saying that Obama showed real courage in ordering this attack…and yet what would any president do? It might have been risky if had gone badly, but imagine the reaction if he did nothing and people found out Obama let Osama get away because the president did not want to risk the fight. Under the circumstances the only reason I could think of that any president would not act is if he was watching someone or guarding someone.

Terrye on May 3, 2011 at 3:32 PM

Yes, but does the anti war left care about that? These are the people who said the Taliban were like our own minute men. And of course on the other end of the political spectrum there is Ron Paul who referred to 9/11 as blowback. Everyone knew back when Bush was president what a mass murdering fanatical psychopath Osama was and there were still people who were ready to see him as either victim or hero.

GrannyDee on May 3, 2011 at 3:41 PM

I think they were on the ground for nearly 40 minutes. That time would include not only securing the perimeter, clearing the compound and securing/killing the occupants, but also bagging, photographing, and extracting the corpse, collecting what they could find for intel, apparently (at least briefly) interrogating Bin Laden’s wife, demolishing the broken helicopter, and calling in/waiting for its backup. Granted, it wasn’t a low-personnel operation and at least some of these things could’ve been going on simultaneously. SEAL Team Six can probably clear a building room-to-room as fast as humanly possible, but the compound wasn’t small. I’d wager that actual periods of shooting didn’t last particularly long. If the plan was to be on the ground for 30 minutes, and it only took 38 with the added contingencies of having to blow and replace an aircraft, that’s pretty smooth.

I might be one of the only people on this site who is really, really uncofortable with having gone in there and essentially murdering him. I know, I know, he murdered thousands (and why is no one mentioning the USS Cole in this? Or the first Tower attack?)

BUt to essentially go in and kill him, when he’s not armed (and I’m guessing his resistance was somewhat in quotation marks –but that’s a guess) makes me very, very uncomfortable. How are we better than he?

lizzieillinois on May 3, 2011 at 1:39 PM

There is a small part of me that at least understands how you get to that conclusion.

But this is war. And it is not murder in war. Especially when you are killing the person who started the war.

But the fact that lizzieillinois feels this way–I assume she leans right–just shows that the actual true liberal left, not the opportunists who just pretend, but the ones who really believe the stuff they put out… they are going to start this talk very soon and then Obama’s numbers are going to suffer.

This could turn into a nightmare for him rather than a victory.

I am surprized that a man as violent as bin Laden didn’t have a gun. Possibly not even in the same room… they must have heard the noise and yet no gun.

From the first comments that they watched it all on video to there was a woman Bin Laden was using to shield himself to there was no woman protecting him to Bin Laden participated in the firefight to Obama had no gun for starters.

It is a huge leap from a woman protecting Obama that he used to keep from getting shot to no woman. Even grainy video will show if there were two people or one.

Did they watch it in real time or are those photos for political ops? Jarrett, whose father in law was best friends with Franklin Marshall Davis and her mother was good friends with Bill Ayers Dad, is running the WH. Everything is about politics including his speech where he took all the credit when this is the man that wanted to shut GITMO and shut down all interrogation that wasn’t done in this Country after being read Miranda Rights. Now Obama is all gung ho taking credit for what started under President Bush.

Will bet money that birth certificate was released last week knowing this was coming up on the weekend and would get it off the stage along with the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘native’ born. That is how political I think this WH is.

That’s 40 from touchdown to liftoff. First secure the perimeter and approaching roads. Then there was a gunfight inside/outside of the yard. Later reports were 22 people either killed or captured, so I believe that battle was a little more intense than first relayed.

Re Osama, if this house was built custom for him, it’s hard to believe that it didn’t have a tunnel out, or a hidden spider hole, etc. Maybe he was hiding under the bed. Maybe he doesn’t have a clue how to use the AK-47 he likes to pose with.

The crashed chopper meant that a backup had to fly in to replace it. That may have burned up X flight time. The intelligence available for gathering could have been so tempting that they stretched the mission for that.

Still, had the Paks caught on it could have gone upside down quickly.

slickwillie2001 on May 3, 2011 at 4:07 PM

Yes, Obama played golf Sunday. MSNBC reported he played only 9 holes, or 3 hours, and reporters thought he left early because of the poor weather. When he returned to the WH, instead of going to his residence to change his shoes, he hurried to the situation room instead, wearing his golf shoes. Of course MSNBC puts their spin on it, how Obama kept a poker face for 72 hrs, doing normal routine, so nobody would have a clue that something major was going on.

Obama didn’t want the bad press Bush got when he allowed the photos of Sadam’s sons out.

Now he knows why Bush did things the way he did them.

Have you folks realized that the last thing little Bammie wanted was bin Laden alive? That would have further alienated the lefties when Bammie denied him a trial in Manhattan. He would have had to send OBL to Guantanamo, rubbing even more salt into that broken promise. The eventual trial there would have probably ended up around election time.

OBL dead is far better for little Bammie than the kerfuffle that would have resulted had he been taken alive. Bammie could not have ordered him killed, but he certainly could have told the forces not to take any risks to keep him alive.

Mr. Burge, the famous Iowahawk, is a national treasure and a genius.

American Pride is Back Out of the Closet!

As much as I am now embarrassed to admit it, if you had asked me 48 hours ago whether Osama Bin Laden would ever be brought to justice I would have probably answered “no.” Like many Americans I had all but abandoned hope that we would ever capture or kill the 9/11 mastermind, and had resigned myself to the idea he would die an old man thumbing his nose at us from some comfortable cave in Waziristan. Well, I can happily report that I completely underestimated the skill, courage, and perseverence of America’s military. And, almost as happily, I can report that I also completely underestimated the capacity of America’s erstwhile “peace community” for turning on a dime and embracing the kind of all-American xenophobic flag-waving bloodlust they only recently decried. So today I stand proudly with my new friends of the formerly antiwar left in a mindlessly jingoistic salute to President Obama for an extralegal military assassination well done.

Yes, it’s true that some pre-January 2009 antiwar activists have remained morally and logically consistent in their opposition to America’s military presence in the Mideast; but, thank God, it appears now they were only a tiny, insignificant minority. Recent events have happily made clear that the antiwar movement of 2001-8 was overwhelmingly dominated by a vast silent hypocritical majority of craven political opportunists awaiting a Democratic administration to gleefully celebrate the covert execution of a man whom, until 28 months ago, they would have described as a “tragic civilian casualty.”

Who is to credit for this rebirth in American national unity? First and foremost, we must cite the leadership of President Obama. Like many Americans – and the Nobel Peace Prize committee – I naively feared he was actually serious when he initially proposed shutting down Guantanamo, trying detainees in American civilian courts, and prior consultation with the international community. Little did I know that this untested young Commander-in-Chief would muster the courage to read his weekly Gallup numbers and, in one daring unilateral extra-judicial targeted hit job, toss aside every single idiotic foreign policy principle of his election campaign. Perhaps most satisfyingly, it was a mission made possible thanks to information extracted by methods he previously banned as “illegal torture.”

But this triumphant new era in situationally-unified American bloodlust does not belong to the President alone; we must also cite Congress’s born-again waterboarders like Nancy Pelosi and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and their newfound enthusiasm for what (at least until 9pm Sunday) they would have once considered illegal military murder squads. Neither can we forget the watchdogs of America’s press, who have shown unprecedented ethical flexibility in shedding their long-held Gandhi moralism and embracing their inner Rambo.

Thanks to leaders like these, American pride is temporarily back out of the closet. And I for one take great personal satisfaction in knowing that when I’m high-fiving a random fellow American and robotically chanting “USA! USA!” at the news that Bin Laden is finally shark chum, there’s a pretty good chance that the guy was, only a few years ago, denying his love for unauthorized secret CIA-planned assassinations. Welcome to the pride parade everybody!

Of course, I’m not naive enough to think our current wave of national unity will last forever. At some point, possibly after the next election, American troops will once again assume their traditional role of psychotic baby-killing objects of fear and pity. And, doubtlessly, those of us who still admire them must once again assume our traditional role as America’s flag-humping racist chickenhawks. But when that day comes, we can look back at the week of May 1, 2011 and realize that it isn’t personal. Hey, that’s just the way the chad crumbles.

The fact he thanked intelligence and Panetta out of the gate – and not the military – was a stark contrast to yesterdays CMOH ceremony – where he thanked Gates twice.

President Obama was literally pulled from a golf outing and escorted back to the White House to be informed of the mission. Upon his arrival there was a briefing held which included Bill Daley, John Brennan, and a high ranking member of the military. When Obama emerged from the briefing, he was described as looking “very confused and uncertain.” The president was then placed in the “situation room” where several of the players in this event had already been watching the operation unfold.

Knucklehead on May 3, 2011 at 2:18 PM

whoah, whoah, whoah, I have no idea what to believe but that article there confirmed my WORST fears about Obama. If any of that is true, Gates would have a responsibility to the country to come clean after he resigns as the President was a complete eunuch during this whole thing. What I read there was dangerous and a stereotype come to life.

Someone would have to go on record with this publicly, it seems Obama and Jarrett were more concerned with securing plausible deniability than actually leading. Yeah I’m not ready to jump aboard this just yet, whoever this source is has a lot of inside access (probably linked to Hillary Clinton from what I read in that article) and I would think they would go to other larger media establishments with their story.

Here are a couple of comments I made at Michelle Malkin’s site about this posting:

I made these points yesterday on blogs and FB:

- Brennan was speaking a hundred miles an hour at the press briefing and coming off as cocky during the whole event.

- I wondered if the White Mosque realized that by saying UBL had gone down fighting our military, they unwittingly made him a martyr in the muslim world.

- Stating that the U.S. military essentially rushed through the ID process with UBL in order to provide him a muslim burial wouldn’t sit well with the American public, and it hasn’t.

To the point of UBL possilby being killed while unarmed, we know that ain’t going to sit well with muslims not to mention raise questions. If he was not armed, why kill him? You know that’s coming soon given this ‘clarification’.

And this one:

Here’s one other point I made, which seems to make a bit of sense IF UBL was unarmed: Did BHO order UBL to be killed rather than taken alive so as to avoid another KSM/Holder fiasco?

I’m just spitballing on that one.

We got him. Explanation FUBAR.

Thanks for the link. Now we know Obama dithered for 16 hours. Hillary warned he wasn’t ready to answer the phone at 3am. This proves it beyond a doubt.

Although he played golf Sunday, I don’t believe it was as a cover to prevent the press pool from finding out something was happening. More likely, he tried to squeeze in his playtime for the day, before he was called into work to pose for a photo op in the situation room.

GrannySunni on May 3, 2011 at 6:10 PM

They are doing this revision kabuki dance due to Obama’s description of what happened.

“President Obama Sunday night in an address to the nation. “A small team of Americans carried out with the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. After a firefight, they killed Osama Bin Laden, and took custody of his body.”"

“After the fire fight, they killed Bin Laden.”

That sounds kinda sorta like an execution.

DSchoen on May 3, 2011 at 7:39 PM

Let us be honest.

This man is not fit to lead. We all see the MSM touting him but deep inside, we know that he’s never been fit to lead and he is incapable of leadership.

So, that’s okay.

The rest of the World needs to know that Americans are capabable of leading ourselves; we don’t need a pretty clown in a nicely starched suit.

We’ll be rid of this clown in 2012, but in the meantime, if you even dare… if you feel led to attempt to attack us you will fail. Don’t mistake the puppet theatre for American Might.

When the story “keeps changing” it is usually a sign the the story (or significant parts thereof) is inaccurate to begin with.

Scenario 1 Navy Seals raid the Obama compound with instructions NOT, under any circumstances, to allow OBL to live-which makes sense since you don’t want a live martyr who, at least theoretically could be acquitted by a liberal jury on some “legal technicality”.Every day, his trial attracts headlines which scoop everything else and every day OBL’s “fan club” of martyrs grows larger. But, instead of struggling bravely, the coward meekly surrenders and is summarily shot in the head by one of the Seals. To cover up the execution-style killing, pictures are withheld and the body is dumped into the ocean.

Scenario 2-CIA discovers that OBL died of “natural causes” and paid an informer millions to reveal the gravesite-the money to be paid only if DNA tests match OBL. The body is dug up-and DNA match is perfect but body so badly decomposed that pictures would reveal this fact and negate any fabricated story about a commando-style raid. Thus no pictures and a quick burial take care of that. But, like a good crisis, why let a big headline go to waste? Thus creating a totally fictitious tale of a raid that killed OBM and enhancing the reputation a struggling president by making a hero out of him-falsely crediting him with leading it.

Scenario 3. Obama doesn’t want to “Offend” Muslim “sensibilities” thus it withholding pictures of a dead OBM so that Muslims won’t think we’re “mean” and “nasty”.

MaiDee on May 3, 2011 at 8:12 PM

They had to change the story by claiming Osama resisted. The Muslim world would have been mad at us if we let it be known their hero went out like a little bi*ch.

xblade on May 3, 2011 at 8:18 PM

I can’t tell if they keep spinning stories because of their PC reflex or because they have differing opinions in the WH intelligence/military/political factions on how to deal with the PR war, or a little of both.
The politico’s are worried about the PC fallout and not ruffling the Muslim’s ire by framing it as a “we had no choice but to shoot the bastard because he resisted” or the intelli-military wing who want to obliterate OBL’s mystic by saying we blew his brains out even though he was unarmed and hiding behind a woman. (almost as unclean a being as a dog in their culture.) Saying he wouldn’t surrender and died rather than be captured would bolster the macho image they want to degrade.
