The Story Shifts on the Abbottabad Raid; UPDATE: Carney Revises Again, Says There Was “Resistance” from bin Laden

posted at 1:20 pm on May 3, 2011 by Jimmie Bise, Jr

According to The Politico, the White House has a couple revisions to the story it told us yesterday of what happened inside Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad. The most notable change thus far to the story we heard yesterday from Deputy National Security Adviser John Brennan and the Pentagon is that bin Laden didn’t pick up a gun and join the fighting.

However, during a background, off-camera briefing for television reporters later Monday, a senior White House official said bin Laden was not armed when he was killed, apparently by the U.S. raid team.

Another White House official familiar with the TV briefing confirmed the change to POLITICO, adding, “I’m not aware of him having a weapon.”

“The bottom line is the team that entered that room was met with resistance and took appropriate action,” said a third American official.

And that’s fine. I don’t think most Americans care if bin Laden was holding a gun when the SEALs dropped him or not. I certainly don’t. I might care a little bit that the woman killed in the raid wasn’t actually bin Laden’s wife, but only a little bit. It’s obvious to me that part of his strategy for fighting the free world has involved hiding behind women and children at every turn, so I’m not shocked to learn that he found a few who were more than willing to hang out at Chez Osama to serve as potential battle furniture when the inevitable reckoning time came.

However, these new revelations might just cause the President a little bit of woe. Already, there is a growing rumble of discontent that the President gave a “kill order” and not the lesser-used “treat pleasantly and invite back for a little brunch followed by a gentle Q&A session order”. While the big guns like the ACLU and Human Rights Watch have yet to weigh in, there’s no doubt that these revisions to the official account could give them more than sufficient reason to do so, given how quickly they’ve done so in the past. I can’t imagine that the anti-war left will stand quietly for much longer while President Obama does a victory lap for snuffing an unarmed old man no matter how much they may want him re-elected. If you’re looking for a sinister reason for why the administration might have put out bad information, that’s about the best one I can imagine.

I’m sure we’ll get the full and accurate story in time; a story this momentous simply must be told. Perhaps by then John Brennan will have had time to get his part of the story straight. I hope he does, considering that he had one of the dozen best views of the entire situation (excluding, of course, the SEALs themselves) and access to the after-action briefing reports.

UPDATE: Jay Carney is in the middle of a press briefing right now (which I can’t see because I don’t have access to a television) with a revised raid timeline. Accorind to the Twitter feed of CNN’s National Security Desk, bin Laden’s wife “rushed” the SEAL and was shot and wounded. After that, bin Laden himself resisted then in some way and they shot him dead. If the White House puts up a transcript in a timely fashion, I’ll post the link here so you can see the narrative for yourself.

One last thing, which is more or less a speculative editorial comment. I think today’s awkward and late in the day adjustments to the official story will feed a “deather” conspiracy theory the White House really doesn’t want to get any larger than it is right now. Stacy McCain doesn’t think it’s that big a deal and he may well be right, at least right now. But given that the White House just last week had to deal publicly, and with not very good grace, with a Birther conspiracy theory that started with a small fringe group, I would think the President would be careful not to hand a new cause du jour to a new small fringe group.

bopbottle on May 3, 2011 at 1:31 PM: I hope Obama TRIES to go after the Seals — that will end his bid for reelection.

and yeah, since the WH watched play by play in the situation room, what was the big deal about getting the story straight the first time. I don’t “care” that they shot bin Laden though I now wonder 1)why the story that he was given a chance to surrender? 2)why did they shoot him? I think it might be “fun” to have him at Gitmo with a GameBoy. Maybe we could have raffled him off to the highest bidder and reduced the deficit.

katablog.com on May 3, 2011 at 2:06 PM

Part of me wishes we could catch him and he would die in Gitmo, not a martyr at the hands of the US, but old and abandoned from nothing but time. But then that seems to be how he lived.

You do understand that he would have been a martyr in either case, right?

catmman on May 3, 2011 at 2:06 PM

Brennan’s new story doesn’t make sense. If the fire fight lasted 40 min with shooting and grenades going off and he was the last man standing, why wouldn’t he have a gun? I know I would. Was OBL that old and sick he couldn’t fight back?

MJBrutus on May 3, 2011 at 2:07 PM

I think it’s more likely than not that a “kill order” was issued.

1. Would the Obama admin(or the US in general) really want to put Osama though a trial?
2. Maybe it’s possible that Osama had to die in order to cover up Pakistani involvement.

lizzieillinois on May 3, 2011 at 1:39 PM

Seriously? You have to ask that question? As if we woke up one day and decided to indiscriminately kill a Muslim because we didn’t like what his beliefs were?

Not sure if you got the memo or not, but this particular Muslim declared war on any and all Americans. He set into motion the murder of thousands of Americans. And they were murdered for no reason other than the fact they were American.

Osama, if murdered, was not an innocent bystander who got caught up in the politics or beliefs of some faraway lunatic. He was the lunatic.

So far as the morality of killing of people, that’s a completely different set of arguments and perhaps that’s what you’re trying to say. But having to ask how we’re different than him is not the moral argument of whether killing is right or wrong.

We’re different than him because he wasn’t an innocent.

no–dude, I was merely trying to show how the left responded to the PFC Jessica Lynch rescue mission once the story began to unravel. The left hazed the president, the pentagon, and the same SEAL Team 6 that executed the Bin Laden mission. Its a comparison and contrast worth evaluating, because, unlike Bush, Obama will be hailed as hero, and the SEALs too. However, in 2003, they weren’t.

ted c on May 3, 2011 at 2:18 PM

Biggest liar, Hillary Clinton. O’Reilly called her talk “twadle” or something similar.

Have you noticed how hard the media and the WH are trying to prove that the Obama machine is not lying in this topic? Yet, many lies have already surfaced.

Obama lied on all things, except that he’ll go into Paaakistan, illegitimately, and that he’ll get Osama.

I’m glad he did, on both accounts, Der Spiegel and the U.N. notwithstanding. I don’t give a rat’s ars about either, but it’s fun to watch the lefties be such hypocrites. Only Cindy Sheehan, the poor soul, is true to herself. Some symbol they’ve got.

The Left has proven without a shred of a doubt that they are the biggest hypocritical impertinent imbeciles.

Condi Rice summed up to perfection where credit should go. All other, including Obama, have been classless hacks.

Couple thoughts on the Situation Room picture:

1. Am I the only one thinking about what must be going through Biden’s head: “When is this thing going to cut to commercial? I need to tinkle.”?

2. Why is Obama apparently sitting in the corner of the room? Marshall Webb is at the head of the table (and in a comfy chair), while the President is off to the side.

I wouldn’t mind getting public statements from people who demand we release him, it would help us know who the enemy is, but I believe we know them from their objections to the operation, the treatment of his remains and the likes.

I’m glad it’s over, I do wish we could get a clear story, I’m not seeing how any effort was made to take him alive, part of me thinks it’s because the administration still in their hearts would want to have a trial for him in the US and this just gets rid of that headache.

Slightly more than that. He was told the mission he authorized/approved/signed off on had been scrubbed the day before.

He planned to go golfing but being the President and knowing about the possibility of the op going forward was notified when it was starting (i.e. when the men started to mount up at Bagram).

He was transported back to the room in the picture (guessing the Situation Room) at the start of the OP to observe the live feed via Langley.

He didn’t actually give the kill order at the precise time.

I have a question:

If they didn’t tell Pakistan what was happening, as Panetta claims, how did a US helicopter get to the house without anyone noticing and a) firing at it or b) alerting Osama that hey something’s up, you better be heading out of there?

If the house is so close to the Pakistani verson of West Point, you’d think someone would be monitoring incoming aircraft to the area, no?

angryed on May 3, 2011 at 1:29 PM

I suspect it has something to do with the Pakis figured Obama would respect the borders of Pakistan as Bush did. Bush knew OBL was in Paki-land, but wouldn’t send in any boots on the ground for the national soveriegnty thing. Needless to say, O-booboo doesn’t suffer from that malaise.

NOT to have been an outright overruling of any specific position by President Obama, simply because there was no specific position from the president to do so. President Obama was, in this case, as in all others, working as an absentee president.

ORconservative on May 3, 2011 at 2:37 PM

I do have a problem if we dropped an unarmed man that could have safely been captured. If that is the case, we gave up a very important source of information to relieve Obama of the anguish of having to decide how to interrogate him and where to try him and under what rules.

In a sane world, he would have been captured, harshly interrogated, and then once all useful information was extracted by any means necessary, he would have been provided with a speedy trial before a military tribunal and promptly executed. But Obama would never have presided over that procedure. A quick death on the battlefield is so much easier and avoids all the faux difficult decisions in the mind of a Democrat President.

I did like the prompt burial a sea though. I wonder when that procedure was cooked up.

I also do not like all the raugh, raugh, flag waving celebration. I am equally glad it happened, but we should be more reserved. A killing is nothing to celebrate. Like Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo used to say, “It’s nothing personal, it just business.”

From the afticle:

Leon Panetta was directing the operation with both his own CIA operatives, as well as direct contacts with military – both entities were reporting to Panetta onlyat this point, and not the President of the United States. There was not going to be another delay as had happened 24 hour earlier. The operation at this point, was in effect, unknown to President Barack Obama or Valerie Jarrett and it remained that way until AFTER it was already underway. President Obama was literally pulled from a golf outing and escorted back to the White House to be informed of the mission. Upon his arrival there was a briefing held which included Bill Daley, John Brennan, and a high ranking member of the military. When Obama emerged from the briefing, he was described as looking “very confused and uncertain.” The president was then placed in the “situation room” where several of the players in this event had already been watching the operation unfold. Another interesting tidbit regarding this is that the Vice President was already “up to speed” on the operation. A source indicated they believe Hillary Clinton had personally made certain the Vice President was made aware of that day’s events before the president was. The now famous photo released shows the particulars of that of that room and its occupants. What that photo does not communicate directly is that the military personnel present in that room during the operation unfolding, deferred to either Hillary Clinton or Robert Gates. The president’s role was minimal, including their acknowledging of his presence in the room.

OBL’s family disowned him years ago. They wouldn’t pay a dime for his body.

The Absent one may not have given the dumping order, if he didn’t give the go order.

We have a lot of compelling evidence we don’t actually have a president – unless it’s Valerie Jarret, or was anyway. Now it looks like we have a committee led by Hillary and company.

scalleywag on May 3, 2011 at 2:38 PM

Well, the picture we’re being shown would certainly make sense, then. Obama sitting in the corner while the key decision makers are gathered around the table, with access to their laptops. Obama looks as if he’s been dragged into something he had no prior knowledge of or wasn’t particularly interested in taking part in.

Shiny_Tiara on May 3, 2011 at 2:48 PM

Yeah but come on it’s pretty easy to remember if OBL had a gun or didn’t have a gun when he was killed. It’s not like they’re all trying to remember the color of his shirt and some say blue while some say purple.

angryed on May 3, 2011 at 2:40 PM

I very seriously doubt any video was in HD Widescreen with slo-mo instant replay.

A situation like that is going to be hectic. Plus, we’re not talking steadycams here. We’re talking about helmet cams that would be moving very quickly assessing all around them.

I doubt half of the people in the situation room could even tell you what he was wearing. The mind does some weird stuff.

ButterflyDragon on May 3, 2011 at 2:48 PM

Please note: a classified document seen in this photograph has been obscured. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Hillary is too dumb to cover the doc with the cameras snapping away. Not like anybody would disseminate pictures from the Sitch Room as our leaders watch Osama being offed.

“Nothing changed with the president’s opinion – he continued to avoid having one.”

Seven Percent Solution on May 3, 2011 at 1:56 PM

This story is too plausible and detailed to be entirely made-up. Furthermore, the picture released by the White House with Obama in golf clothing and sitting in the corner of the room (notice he has no table space or laptop or papers, but is holding a water bottle) seems to collaborate the story quite well.

This would sink him if it’s true…AP, Ed, Jazz and gang, hop on this and see if you can confirm the validity of this story. Way to big not to be explored.

Pattosensei on May 3, 2011 at 2:49 PM

It happens. There has been numerous studies showing that it happens and that it’s not people trying to deceive, it’s just the way they remember things due to other indirect influences (media reports, retelling to friends, etc.)

ButterflyDragon on May 3, 2011 at 2:18 PM

I don’t think they were watching ‘the action’ of the shooter necessarily. The team leader probably had a cam on if anyone and the shooter was more than likely not him. 1/40 chance to have the camera on the shooter. They may have even been watching an over watch cam that was watching the action thru some sort of infrared or lowlight camera. Either of which don’t lend themselves to awesome visuals when you’re in a run and gun situation

StompUDead on May 3, 2011 at 2:50 PM

I have a question:

If they didn’t tell Pakistan what was happening, as Panetta claims, how did a US helicopter get to the house without anyone noticing and a) firing at it or b) alerting Osama that hey something’s up, you better be heading out of there?

If the house is so close to the Pakistani verson of West Point, you’d think someone would be monitoring incoming aircraft to the area, no?

angryed on May 3, 2011 at 1:29 PM

In part they silenced the helicopters and in another way they exercised working the helicopters into the ‘normal’ copter traffic/pattern, which is apparently heavy in that area already.

Schadenfreude on May 3, 2011 at 2:33 PM

Except that someone was on twitter saying that helicopters in the area at that time of night was unusual.

tinkerthinker on May 3, 2011 at 2:50 PM

It looks like the White House will have to release videos, with audio enabled, of bin Laden getting whacked.
.
My guess is that bin Laden really was hiding behind a woman, brandishing a pistol and screaming like a little girl …
.
This ought to make major ratings on alJazeera …
.
So much for his warrior/martyr/man status.

Arbalest on May 3, 2011 at 2:52 PM

This White House has a horrific time when they have an unscripted effort. The fog of war is one thing, but this is ridiculous.

Question: if they’re so awesomely excellent as their acolyte O’Donnell claims they are in planning and execution, why the hell can’t they get their story straight afterwards?

Col. Ralph Peters speculated on FOX News that the helicopters followed flight patterns commonly used by other aircraft in the area.

So, presumably, if UBL or any of his people heard the aircraft approaching, they would have just thought it was the Paks running some military exercise or something.

I will be honest that it shocked me to hear that he had authorized this raid into Pakistan because it was so out of character from what had gone before. This sounds more believable.

While I agree some of that story seems plausible, don’t take a single photo and make a story out of it.

There is also a photo of Obama standing at the head of the table and nearly everyone is paying attention to him. (Though, in that photo Leon Panetta is surrounded by the very people that article says were behind his decision. The photo made me think of an “us vs them” scenario.)

Though, I haven’t seen Valerie Jarret in any of the photos from the situation room.

Not at all. If the people in the photo were watching this in real time but had no clue what was happening, then what’s the point of having the feed there?

Either the feed is useless or the feed is clear enough to be able to tell if OBL had a gun.

The point is to flood the zone with so much noise and disinformation that the public only remembers one thing, and one thing only: Obama Got Osama.

Not knowing exactly how he did it only burnishes his MBM image as one bad operator.
