Swapping Bias for Bias at CBS: Couric Out, Pelley In

posted at 2:35 pm on May 3, 2011 by Jimmie Bise, Jr

By now, I’m sure you all know that Katie Couric, who must by law be described with the adjective “perky”, has stepped down as anchor of the CBS Evening News after several years of doing to her ratings what hiring an elderly mule as a CEO would do to the stock of Apple. Her replacement is likely to be veteran 60 Minutes reporter Scott Pelley. Pelley, as CBS was proud to note, is an actual journalist who is responsible for half the awards won by his former show over the past several years.

Of course, you know that if someone is getting accolades by the MSM, they can’t be good for anyone with a conservative view of the world, and Pelley certainly isn’t. He made a bit of a name for himself in 2006 when he equated those who don’t worship at the altar of Global Warming with Holocaust deniers:

Pelley’s most recent report, like his first, did not pause to acknowledge global warming skeptics, instead treating the existence of global warming as an established fact. I again asked him why. “If I do an interview with Elie Wiesel,” he asks, “am I required as a journalist to find a Holocaust denier?” He says his team tried hard to find a respected scientist who contradicted the prevailing opinion in the scientific community, but there was no one out there who fit that description. “This isn’t about politics or pseudo-science or conspiracy theory blogs,” he says. “This is about sound science.”

But doesn’t the fact that there are a lot of Americans who are skeptical of global warming – not well respected scientists, perhaps, but ordinary people watching the segment – warrant at least some recognition of the other side? “There becomes a point in journalism where striving for balance becomes irresponsible,” says Pelley.

So, not only is he an insulting journalist but one who has taken it solely upon himself to decide what is and isn’t responsible journalism. This includes, you’ll notice, deciding who is “respectable” based on criteria to which only he holds the magic key.

Pelley’s global warming reporting since than has been both alarmist and oddly conspiratorial. In fact, in one report in 2008 he accused the Bush White House of tampering with the science in order to downplay what he considered the certain threat of global warming. In 2009, Pelley filed a report so full of distortions about The Eeeeevil Oil Companies (the global warming cult’s favorite villain not named George Bush or Dick Cheney) that even the Columbia Journalism Review felt the need to write a detailed criticism. He’s also swung his bias stick hard at coal companies and, in a non-global warming turn, gave the would-be builder of the Ground Zero Mosque a completely free field to hawk his project.

I could go on — believe me, there are plenty of examples of Pelley’s unchecked bias to fill a small book — but you get the point. CBS executives could have replaced the perky Katie Couric with a serious journalist who would be honest about his biases and work hard to overcome them. Instead, they opted for just another narrative-pusher, a carbon-copy talking head with an inflated sense of self-worth whose only real effect on the network’s news coverage will be to drive it even father into irrelevance.

Bold move! What a shake-up. This ought to get them a bunch of new viewers.

This is the most agressive MSM personnel decision since Curry for Viera.

O/T:

Quit the damn tease and release the photo Bin Laden.

We watched 3000 people die on live TV.

Campaign issue, anyone?

Why do we keep using the word “bias”?

Maybe “leftist propaganda”?

I keep waiting for Tapper to get his own show or anchor spot, but that would make too much sense.

Like the legendary investigatory blogger Chuckles Johnson, Scott Pelley has “done the science.”

So shut up, you stupid wingnut h8ters.

When the Columbia Journalism Review calls you out , you’ve really strayed off the plantation!

However it should be no surprise CBS went for a typical MSM “journalist”. CBS has decided “perky” wasn’t the right path.

A middle aged white male is the new anchor? HORROR!!

He says his team tried hard to find a respected scientist who contradicted the prevailing opinion in the scientific community, but there was no one out there who fit that description.

They asked the kid who delivers their lunch from a local deli if he knew anyone.

Now that’s real “hard-hitting, investigative reporting”!

So I guess they decided it wasn’t the politcs it was the fact that she was a woman since they hired a man with the same politcs.

CBS: It’s your political bias… sh-sh-sh, now you know the secret.

And Little Katy should be fired from the woman’s movement for the enormous setback she has caused them.

HA!

capejasmine on May 3, 2011 at 2:59 PM

Pelley, as CBS was proud to note, is an actual journalist who is responsible for half the awards won by his former show over the past several years.

I guess it depends how much credence one puts on those awards.

He has seeming success in his efforts to challenge “the establishment” with his investigations.

Therefore the MSM has selected him to continue with “the established” MSM agendas and biases.

One establishment basing their careers on investigating the other establishment. Classing American ingenuity.

So what did Pelley have to say when it was revealed that those scientists had been manipulating data in order to “hide the decline”? I guess he was on vacation that week, right?

HomeoftheBrave on May 3, 2011 at 3:18 PM

CBS, ABC and NBC are all left wing prpaganda machines and all those spewing their biased rhetoric are likewise leftist sock puppets. To discuss the left leanings of any single employee would be both redundant and a waste of time.

O/T: I got stuck watching hearing a few moments of Diane Sawyer last night doing an impression of a news broadcast from Ground Zero. At the end of her spiel, she delivered a warm, proud, sincere, statement which included the phrase “America, this exceptional country in which we live.”
.
So, I guess The LSM and Ø are walking back the “America, The Mediocre” archetype since Barry gunned down Osammy. Bammy was there, right?

ExpressoBold on May 3, 2011 at 3:23 PM

Umm, who watches the network news anymore?

And the local news is only good for the local weather reports, right?

karenhasfreedom on May 3, 2011 at 3:24 PM

Ok, fine — but is he perky?

Dopenstrange on May 3, 2011 at 3:24 PM

The evening news is dead. Even tenured soap operas are getting cancelled. The Big 3 is missing is a visionary(!) who has the guts to say ‘our network is ditching the evening news format. It’s time is gone’. I think we’ll live to see that moment. Most likely candidate? NBC. They already have MSNBC. Why duplicate efforts?

Heh. The Leftwing Propaganda Industry seems remarkably healthy despite plummeting sales and profits. How do they do it?

Jaibones on May 3, 2011 at 3:25 PM

This is why I have always contended the problem with CBS isn’t Katie Couric, the problem is institutional. Changing network anchors isn’t going to solve their problem. They need an entire overhaul from the top all the way down.

The smart thing for CBS to do, for business purposes, would be to compete with Fox Special Report. That would automatically bump them to the top spot. But they will never do this. Ideology is too important.

It’s a shame for them that John Roberts is not available (he’s under contract with FOX news now). I thought he did a good job when anchoring the CBS Evening News a few years back.

I wonder if they truly don’t get it or if they do get it and just refuse to play, ratings be damned?

stvnscott on May 3, 2011 at 4:15 PM

Seeing that Pelley will get the perky one’s eat and after having just watched Brian Williams the other night reminds me of the joke about two assholes on a camel. He cannot be any worse than Williams when he was talking about the tornadoes that had struck the South but added, This takes us back to another tragedy named Katrina. The FEMA director was called “Brownie” and if you remember how badly the government and Brownie reacted you will be comforted to know that we now have a knowledgeable and professional director under Obama. He had to go out of his way to throw that in about Bush and Brown. Anyway one of the arabs on the camel going to the soccer game said “We will never find our camel when the game is over”. The other one said “Don’t worry that cop back there said “look at the two assholes on that camel” so we will look for a camel with two assholes on it”!

I’ve been around Dallas long enough to remember this tool in the local market. He was a decent reporter but I was surprised to hear of his gig with CBS Evening News, then 60 Minutes (I didn’t think he was that good, even back then). He was stuck-up when he was a pup. He’s zactly where he belongs, IMHO. And no, I never watch the network news.

Yellowdog12 on May 3, 2011 at 4:29 PM

The mainstream media is only mainstream if you recognize their existence. I wouldn’t watch any of them even at gunpoint.

volsense on May 3, 2011 at 4:46 PM

Pelley came on back around when I still occasionally watched 60 Minutes. He impressed me…as a shallow escapee from a local TV news operation. He’s but in marker in the decline of the culture. A Pod Person of the Air.

curved space on May 3, 2011 at 7:59 PM

Never heard of him.

Roy Rogers on May 3, 2011 at 3:03 PM

He used to be a reporter for the local ABC affiliate here in Dallas, WFAA. WFAA’s news department has long had a high profile as local stations go, and plenty of its reporters have gone directly from there to the network (like Pelley did when he went to SeeBS). He grew up in Lubbock and went to Texas Tech.

He was pretty good as a reporter here, but of course he’s a lib, like most reporters.
