Jay Carney: Bin Laden was unarmed when shot

posted at 7:05 pm on May 3, 2011 by Allahpundit

Jimmie tackled some of this earlier but here’s the vid from today’s presser for those who missed it. If the SEALs’ tactics on the ground had been as sloppy and confused as the White House’s handling of the media aftermath, Bin Laden and his crew would be dragging their bodies through the streets of Abbottabad as I write this. How did we go from “Bin Laden had a weapon and was using his wife as a human shield” to “Bin Laden was unarmed and didn’t have a human shield” in the span of 24 hours when there’s apparently helmet-cam footage of the whole raid? Surely, surely, the White House knew that conspiracy cranks and naysayers would cite every discrepancy in the official narrative as “proof” that Bin Laden’s still alive or whatever. Didn’t they … watch the video before chatting with the press?

As for the subsidiary question of why an unarmed man would be shot, do note:

U.S. commandos shot Osama bin Laden when he made a threatening move during the Americans’ raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, a U.S. official said, according to CNN’s Pam Benson…

When Benson asked the first U.S. official whether bin Laden tried to grab a weapon or physically attack a commando, the official said only, “He didn’t hold up his hands and surrender.”

A friendly reminder: This guy was the supreme leader of a group whose calling card is suicide attacks. According to Al Qaeda propaganda, his bodyguards were specifically tasked with shooting him themselves if U.S. troops ever got close enough to threaten him. If I was a SEAL inside the compound about to kick in his door, I would have expected to see one of two things when it flung open: A phalanx of mujahedeen ready to open fire and/or Bin Laden himself armed with a suicide device. Frankly, I would have guessed that the whole room was wired with explosives in order to go out in a blaze of glory if the need arose. Remember too that the SEALs reportedly didn’t reach Bin Laden’s bedroom until the end of the raid, after they’d already been on the ground and shooting it out with his henchmen for a good half hour. All that while, Osama was upstairs, doing god knows what but possibly — for all they knew — preparing a bomb. Under those circumstances, once they came face-to-face with him, they’d have to shoot him if he so much as twitched when they yelled “surrender.” Realistically, what else could they do?

Or maybe I’m wrong and they were hell-bent on killing him regardless, if only because capturing him and holding would have been a legal clusterfark the likes of which America’s never seen. The SEALs were allegedly told at the very beginning that “your job is to kill him” and a U.S. national security official told Reuters yesterday morning that “This was a kill operation.” I wonder what would have happened if he’d put his hands up, fallen to his knees, and begged for mercy. Oh well!

Part of this is the media’s fault. The use of ‘anonymous sources”, “official with knowledge of the situation, but is not authorized to speak to the media”, “sources inside the _____ are stating”, and so on. But this WH can’t manage the media appropriately.

The WH should have held a press conference and told the media they were reviewing the video, documents, statements from the SEAL’s, etc to get an accurate analysis of what happened and that any statements not coming from outside the WH were to be taken with a grain of salt. This way the WH can contain some of this misinformation.

remind me…when we captured Sadam, did we have all these different version of the story of what happened? I don’t remember that we did. but I could be remembering wrong.

but Obambi is new at this, so i guess we should give him a break. After all, it’s like Oprah said…everyone has a learning curve.

txhsmom on May 3, 2011 at 7:16 PM

Thanks txhsmom, that was partially the point I was trying to make. I am glad he is dead, and yes, I would have shot him too. I see it as more of a kill mission as has been inferred by some people, and don’t think they could seriously consider capturing him and bringing him somewhere for trial. It’s the hypocrisy of not being able to just stand up and say “Yes, we saw an opportunity to kill him, and we took it” that irks me.

I don’t understand what the point is to all the stories. Some people seem to think it is deliberate misinformation with some counter terrorism purpose..but it all seems kind of weird to me.

Those people on board those planes and in those towers were “unarmed” also. I’m glad they did it. It saved the US a whole lot of hand-wringing and trouble. I’m very, very glad that the last thing his eyes saw were US Soldiers!!! :~)

jatfla on May 3, 2011 at 7:56 PM

Though I personally could care less whether Bin Laden was armed and have no quarrel with the order to kill him on site, it is amusing to watch liberals like sesquipedalian orgasmically celebrate something that under Bush they would’ve abhorred. Namely the summary execution of a man who could’ve quite easily been taken into custody.

Mike Honcho on May 3, 2011 at 7:57 PM

Oh My!! Lefty Hollyweird now attacking Obama for killing unarmed man. Other lefty groups following suit. Can someone say backfire?

andy85719 on May 3, 2011 at 8:07 PM

Frankly, I would have guessed that the whole room was wired with explosives in order to go out in a blaze of glory if the need arose.

Which means that Obama put our troops in a hell of a lot of danger just so there’d be minimal collateral damage and a body that we’re not allowed to see. The safest thing for our troops would’ve been bombing it in March as was suggested to POTUS but POTUS NIXED.

This could’ve ended SO differently and those SEALs deaths would be on Obama’s hands.

I’m so utterly disgusted in POTUS right now I can hardly see straight.

Between this endangering of our troops when there were safer alternatives, and treating Osama’ body to Islamic rites, this was FUBAR.

Great post AP. You’re absolutely right. The going meme over the last several years was that OBLs homies were to cap him if the US got close—and close we did get once in Afghanistan (unbeknownst to us) and it almost happened. A patrol almost stumbled upon him, supposedly. Second, you’re right in presuming that we thought he’d cap himself, if he had to. AFter 40 minutes on target, homeboy knew the gig was up and he failed his final jihadbot test–that is to take out the infidel when he got within range. He expects the minions to plunge jets into skyscrapers but he can’t even squeeze off a few rounds to even protect his wife. OBL died a freaking coward with his d!ck in his one hand and his wife in the other. I’m glad that a hairy assed frogman Navy SEAL delivered that pr!ck right where he needed to go–right to hell.

Ryan Anthony on May 3, 2011 at 11:16 PM

If they stick to they killed him unarmed some on the left will scream their bloody heads off. My question is if you can do this to the terrorist Bin Laden, why can’t you do it to the terrorist Muammar Gaddafi? Was Gadaffi elected by the people of Libya or did he take the country by force? If by force he’s a usurper who doesn’t deserve to fall under the rule of not killing heads of state. He’s still a terrorist even if its his own people he terrorizes. So, he should fall under the “double tap” rule which is now part of the Obama doctrine. Are you really surprised they can’t get their story straight? C’mon! 1) they had intel as it was happening some say they were watching it as it happened. 2) they debriefed those on the ground including those who shot Bin Laden. Now I assume this was taken down after and was recorded real time if the seals were wearing head cams. So why does the story keep changing? Seems to me they don’t have good grip on WHAT they want us to hear. You know one must be re-elected. “Transparency” at it’s best.

G. on May 3, 2011 at 11:20 PM

You know, the anyonymity of being a member of SEAL 6 cuts both ways. What if they were told to capture him alive, and the Seal who got to Bin Laden first thought of his fellow troups and Country first and double tapped him instead? How could Obama have released this information without blowing a hole wide open in our diplomacy? And how could he admit it? He might act like he’s a little unsure of the facts, kinda like he’s acting now….

I have no evidence of this whatsoever. Just thinking out loud….

Maybe Pol Pot. Stalin was a piker compared to OBL. Bush would not make the list in any sane nightmare, although maybe in yours.

Stalin only killed roughly 20 million of his own people…more than double that of Hitler. He purposefully starved people in Ukraine. I’m pretty sure he was worse that OBL.

Mao has the worse death toll of any single person in the 20th Century. He is responsible for the death of more people that WWII. Think about that.

OBL was an evil bastard that needed to be killed, but I don’t know if you can say he was worse than the others. It depends on what criteria you use I guess. By the numbers, he is barely a blip on the radar…in malicious intent, he’s right up there.

If the WH keeps giving out different versions, they’ll eventually find one that pleases the most lefties and gives them that bump in the polls they so desire. Waiting to see if O brings the styrofoam columns to GZ on Thurs.

Surely, surely, the White House knew that conspiracy cranks and naysayers would cite every discrepancy in the official narrative as “proof” that Bin Laden’s still alive or whatever. Didn’t they … watch the video before chatting with the press?

Hate to say it, but the multiple scenario gimmick fits the MO of the current WH.

The goal is to obfuscate, confuse, and trap the audience in enough contradictions they burn out. In general, a lot of the Obama disses are probably not mere simple revenge pleasures for the Prez, but useful diversions while they chase their own pigeons. The goal of the propagandist is to produce so much copy, that truth becomes a metaphor for lies.

I assume that is part of the reason Obama buried the triumph of killing Bin Laden in the weed patch of his speech to all nations. That and the fact he likes the sound of himself giving Presidential style speeches

Waiting for a lawyer to step forward and represent the UBL family for damages. yep…. you wait….

Let’s hope the US Navy treated OBL with the same civilized, quiet dignity shown for another muslim leader…..

They are a few blank seconds, be sure to watch it all the way through to enjoy the subtle beauty of islamic culture.

Realistically, what else could they do?

I’m not disagreeing, but this isn’t the footnote I wanted added to this chapter. Shooting an old, unarmed man during a raid in which his youngest wife was killed is much less satisfying than shooting them both while he was trying to use her as a human shield, trying but failing badly, to go out in a blaze of glory.

And of course the confusion with all of this isn’t helping.

I’m hoping he was in a fetal position, soiling himself as he screamed “I’m soooooOOOOOooorry” as the SEALs rolled him over and shot him in the face.

He left out “unlike Dillinger”, I think…

Does it matter? Were the American citizens working on 9/11 in the twin towers, were they armed?
