Hot Air Primary Survey Results: May Edition

posted at 3:55 pm on May 3, 2011 by Patrick Ishmael

With over 6000 votes cast, Sarah Palin has again won the Hot Air GOP primary survey. She leads a field of Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, and Mitch Daniels, among others.

The map:

(If you’re unfamiliar with the map controls, they’re laid out here. “Trial and error” isn’t a bad approach, either.)

The table:

Let me say up front, as I’ve said before, that these numbers are legitimate — they represent one vote per voter. So, Ron Paul’s people have come out in force, and thus have put him into the fourth spot.

The Hot Air Presidential primary, over time.

There appears to be a growing separation between Hot Air candidates, with a bit of a space developing between the candidates who have taken 5% and 10% of the vote. We’ll see if that pattern holds up going forward. Also note the dip in Palin support; she still leads by a significant margin, but her vote-take this month was her second-worst to date.

The top vote getter for Vice President? Allen West, whose percentage of the vote actually grew from 19% in April to over 24% in May. He comfortably leads a tight pack of candidates, starting with Paul Ryan, followed by a Michele Bachmann/Marco Rubio tie (our first ever tie in the top 5,) and Herman Cain (the only candidate to appear in the top 5 of both the President and VP surveys.)

Any of the results surprise you? Think we should ask something we haven’t yet? Interested in a result or crosstab I haven’t posted? Tell me here or in the comments.

As for the argument of who is the lesser of two evils…if the Huckster is the nominee vs Bambi…I will vote for Huck…but I will be seriously considering a write in for Jimmah Carter. I mean sh!t, even that would be an improvement on Hussein.

There are going to be things we don’t like about any candidate who has a track record. I know that he’s made some remarks about global warming that I thought were off base. He’s not my favorite, except among those who are definitely in the race as of now. As I see it, his record of good governance in MN is what separates him from the pack (I need to learn more about Johnson and his time as governor of NM).

I like him-but my exercise addiction nearly killed me in 2003. It was a very long road back. The LAST thing I need/want is the government telling me what I can/can’t eat.
I can’t vote for anyone that supports that.
I wish Jindal were running-but alas…

What I don’t get is why anyone would vote for a 78 year old man who has no record of success and no chance of winning.

huckleberryfriend on May 3, 2011 at 6:32 PM

I see the Palin people are awfully defensive. I find it suspicious that with all the names on HA’s list, the dominant name is the one who hasn’t even declared or hinted at it.

I’d take Palin over Pawlenty, Huckabee, and most definately Romney… who I wouldn’t vote for under any circumstance. But if she’s the nominee, it’s going to be a herculean task to persuade the American people that she can beat Obama. For the record, I was all for Palin until she quit her job, started the reality TV thing, and decided to spend her time tweeting.

Well that is certainly your right.
But I personally can understand her decision to resign.
I hate reality TV, but after seeing a little of her show, I can see why she did it.
It certainly helps show who she really is.
I have no problem with someone using Tweets to communicate with the public.
So it’s too bad you find that a deal breaker, but a lot of us don’t.
so if it came down to Romney vs Obama, you are saying you’d vote for Obama, or stay home?
Bcs I have to tell you that’s probably a bad idea.

I see some good news in seeing Palin with the largest loss this month and Daniels with the largest gain. Even with such tactics (assuming you’re right) it looks like more people are coming to accept that she’s smart enough to not run.

As a Daniels run is looking more likely and his recent good moves (education reform, PP definding, etc) gathering publicity he’s on the rise.

gryphon202 on May 3, 2011 at 6:52 PM

They have all called a truce. Daniels is the only one brave enough to say it out loud.

Name one potenial candidate who has made social issues a top priority. Maybe I’m wrong. I often am. But I’m not hearing social issues from anyone… because they are divisive and we have a financial melt down. Unity is needed right now.

So Daniels record on social issues is very good, and all he could really do is make Supreme Court picks and I think any of them can do that just fine. So why do we need a fight about social issues?

SAMinVA on May 3, 2011 at 6:32 PM

So if she spent all her time playing golf, would you like her?

lonestar1 on May 3, 2011 at 8:59 PM

I feel like a rerun… everytime I post on my favorite website, I am defending Ron Paul fans.
Can we move past the hate (using words like Paultards)?
Dr. Paul is a legit Republican… and so are his supporters. (Me included) We may lean libertarian, but that just means we want more freedom. We hate taxes, hate the government, and hate socialism… we are pro-life and pro free markets!
WHERE IS THE LOVE?!?

therambler on May 3, 2011 at 9:03 PM

Paul-bots, once they realize there is a poll being taken, they swarm. They have no clue, however, that their hero will never win, never can win, a national primary, much less general election. Dudes, you may be smarter than the Nader-bots, but only marginally so.

huskerdiva on May 3, 2011 at 9:18 PM

I found my vote as I always do.

SouthernGent on May 3, 2011 at 9:19 PM

The republicans should run a package: President: Palin, VP: Cain, or . . . Chief of staff: Gingrich, Defense: West or Bolton, Energy: Jindal, Treasury: Paul Ryan or Daniels or Romney, Education: Bill Bennet, Homeland Security: Patraeus, Veterans Affairs: West or Bolton, etc. Musical chairs to their best abilities, and choices. Show your best hand to all of the voters to compare to what we have now and what we will continue to have until 2012.
Get all of the money that you would have spent in primaries and use it against what could be a billion dollar campaign fund of obama’s.
In answer to someone else’s response to an earlier post, (paraphrase) “we have primaries so that we have a vote, and a choice in the candidate.” How did that work out for you last time? I never wanted McCain. Only voted against Obama and for Palin.

mydogwonthunt on May 3, 2011 at 9:33 PM

Daniels wants a VAT tax, screw that. No one who is a fiscal conservative is pushing VAT. He also stunk on ice at OMB. His old lady is an unstable nut job. She already left him once and wants no part of him being POTUS.

Romney means Dumb-Øcare stays. If Romney is the Republican nominee why bother voting.

Jayrae on May 3, 2011 at 10:03 PM

bifidis where are you?
Do you want to give Obama another 4 years with which to destroy our Republic?
It sure sounds like it.

I like it. Make Bolton Sec of State though.

Kataklysmic on May 3, 2011 at 10:23 PM

Why include RAND Paul when he has definitively announced that He Will Not Run since his father is running?

If you are going to include Rand then I guess you should also include Haley Barbour too, right?

I’m just sayin! ;o)

The momentum is with Herman Cain. Come to know him and you will likely support him. Cain/West, the racists’ response to racists.

exdeadhead on May 3, 2011 at 11:03 PM

It’s funny (ha ha) the way you Palin haters get all wee-wee’d up when Palin wins yet another straw poll. But it’s also funny (strange) how you keep tossing out the some ol’ same ol’ tired talking points that have about as much substance as the termites that are currently swarming in my house…just a buncha sawdust that’s easily blown away.

Try taking on her policies. She handed you a 5 point plan for military intervention yesterday, in writing. Go ahead, take that on…I dare ya!

Ya can’t do it, can ya?

ornery_independent on May 3, 2011 at 11:50 PM

I was showing this map to my husband and he thinks everyone wants Bachman because we can’t get past her when we try to click the different areas… I had to show him the chart!

CCRWM on May 3, 2011 at 11:57 PM

Well, Annoyinglittletwerp, we who are libertarian or at least lean libertarian have a solid, measurable reason to so vocally oppose the neo-conservatives…

With neo-conservatives, the size, power, and cost of the government GROWS.

As a Paul supporter, I couldn’t give a fat rat’s ass what the truthers opinions are about 9/11. They’re taking a legitimate concern (distrust of our government), and bastardizing it with far-flung theories when what they should be doing (and we ALL should be doing) is focusing on our REAL problems.

We’re over $14 trillion in the hole. Our government is too big, and compromises our rights and liberties at every turn. We have out noses and our money in places all around the globe where neither has any business, or Constitutional blessing. Our currency is debased, and isn’t backed by anything.

And, whether you like it or not, Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate in the race right now addressing our REAL problems.

But hey, have your pretendy conservatives who won’t do jack to right the ship, and then be left disappointed.

Badger State Dave on May 4, 2011 at 3:47 AM

Yes, let’s quickly review the crooked nutbar Ron Paul, and his merry band of slack-jawed sycophants.

Paul has long been in the top three Republican “earmarkers” and pork procurers in the House. His modus operandi has always been to insert his spending during the committee process and then, when the final bill is certain to pass with a wide margin, vote AGAINST the whole budget. The sort of half-wits who fall for Paul’s schtick eat that crap right up.

Few of them have enough long-term memory left to remember Paul’s lifelong commitment to “Open Borders” – through his 1988 Presidential campaign and after, that WAS his immigration policy. When his constituents started getting antsy in the late ’90s, Paul quietly changed his position. “Man of Principle,” the subnormal brains who love him cry out.

Paul also opposes any federal regulation of communications, and his LP platform decried age as an arbitrary determiner of the legal right to contract – which would also include sexual consent. Paul sees no role for the federal government in fighting child pornography, making him very popular among the kiddie porn fans.

Paul’s long crusade for the Gold Standard – although anyone with a rudimentary command of arithmetic could figure out we couldn’t get to a gold standard without drastic deflation – is based upon his own investments, which have been mainly in gold and gold mining stocks. So when he rails against the Fed and touts gold, he is feathering his own nest. “Man of Principle.”

Had Paul’s isolationist foreign policy been in effect from the end of WWII, we would be living in Soviet America today. He opposes ANY foreign basing of troops or “interference” in other countries unless we are directly attacked. Insanity – isn’t it hereditary?

Sure, there will always be the smelly, stupid, perverted dregs of society who support the sick pork-barreling jackass who pretends to be against big government, but there are limits to what education can achieve.

Adjoran on May 4, 2011 at 4:54 AM

Adjoran – Appropriation of funds IS Constitutionally authorized.

Military adventurism around the globe? Not so much. Borrowing money from China that we can’t afford to repay to sustain this offensive excursion? Even less so.

Try again.

You Palinista’s are delusional. Sarah is a quitter. That doesn’t matter to you sycophants, but it does to the rational people she will need to get elected. You know, the people who will ACTUALLY take the time to vet her. The cool thing about Sarah is that she is a patriot. And she isn’t going to hand Obama a second term by trying to win the rep primary.

csdeven on May 3, 2011 at 7:20 PM

So you approve of Klopper not quitting and admire her fighting spirit to go against the longest of odds, after all, it’s not coming out of her pocket – just stick the bill to Joe Public.

I’m sure you would admire Sarah for sticking it out, spending more of her time on fighting frivolous suits, than taking care of real State business. Right? You’d also only approve of her if she fought the lawsuit with all the State funds available to her where applicable and the rest from her personal bank account. You will only admire her when she goes broke from exhausting her funds. Right?

The anti-palinistas like you are putzes when you sit there and mindlessly repeat the mantra – she’s a quitter.

When you can both acknowledge the unique situation in Alaska vis a vis liabilities and state that regardless, you believe that she should have stood fast and continued the fights; and that you would have her back by sending money to her legal defense fund, then I could respect that as a matter of your conviction.

Otherwise, you’re just another BLM lackey posing as a conservative while repeating their TPs.

Exit question: What’s the difference between a RINO and a Libtard? Not much, they both will bring down the country just as fast — depending on the subject just faster than the other and vice versa.
