The Politics of a Dead Terrorist
posted at 3:00 pm on May 2, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
Even given my normally sunny, upbeat, sincere disposition (*cough*) I’d love to be one of those people who looks at the demise of bin Laden as nothing more than a moment of national unity and happiness, properly examined in a vacuum where politics is concerned. Sadly, in the words of comic great Ron White, while I have the right to remain silent [on this] I lack the ability. The fact is that the death of bin Laden will have political implications and they can’t be ignored. Killing the AQ leader was one of the promises Obama 08 made on the campaign trail and his supporters are already being quick to trumpet it. So how much of an impact will it have?
I took a look over at Outside the Beltway, where Doug Mataconis had already weighed in on the subject.
The 1992 election is probably the best reason to be careful when making any predictions about how the death of bin Laden is likely to impact American politics. As [Nate] Silver notes, at this point in his Presidency George H.W. Bush seemed to be unbeatable thanks to the overwhelming success of the Persian Gulf War, but within a year that boost in the polls had largely disappeared thanks to a flagging economy, not to mention the fact that he had greatly annoyed his conservative base by going back on his “No New Taxes” pledge. This time around, the President is likely to get a boost in the polls but it’s not at all clear that it’s going to last, especially since we’ve already seen plenty of evidence that Obama’s approval numbers are subject to wide fluctuations.
So yes, barring a disaster in Libya or elsewhere, this likely takes national security off the table as an issue in 2012, but the election was never going to be about national security anyway. Much as George H.W. Bush found it hard to translate his post-Gulf War popularity into domestic success (something that his son was also largely unable to do in the wake of the September 11th attacks), it isn’t at all clear that killing Osama bin Laden is going to make any difference at all in the political battles to come over the budget, entitlements, the deficits, and the size and scope of government, In fact, there’s no reason to think that it would.
For contrast, Doug also points to Commentary’s Jonathan Tobin, and his analysis stating that this could be a turning point for Obama. (I’ll leave you to follow the link and read that one for yourself.)
Does Obama get a temporary bump in the polls out of this? I wouldn’t be shocked. This story is going to (rightly) consume the news cycle for a week or more. And while the process may have begun during the last administration, it was Obama who pulled the trigger and ordered the mission, which our SEALS pulled off to near perfection. For that, he deserves credit.
But as Mataconis points out, how long does this last? Was national security (aside from questions of remaining in Afghanistan and Libya) ever going to be the driving force in the 2012 election? People without jobs paying five bucks a gallon for gas may be very patriotic, but I’m sorry to say that they may have short memories for this sort of thing. I can’t escape the feeling that domestic issues of debt, energy, etc. will come slinking back in as the proper focus of campaign 2012.
The comparison to G.H.W. Bush was an apt one, I think. He handled the Gulf War in a way that drew the appreciation and admiration of the nation. But in the end, he raised taxes and opened a door for Bill Clinton’s team to say, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Obama would be foolish indeed to think he can ride this one success across the ocean to electoral victory. Far more work is waiting to be done at home.

Like with the birth certificate, Obama is the victim of bad timing here. If this had happened 3-5 months out from the election, he could have ridden it in to a victory. We are 19 months out from the election. There’s a lot of ground to cover between now and then. Al Qaeda will have a new “spiritual leader” by then, and sadly, they’ll probably have done some very bad things to some very innocent Americans.
He’ll get a bump here — quite a big one, I think — but it will recede as the months go by. I think the raw expression of patriotism last night will be the chief reason for the bump — Americans like to feel good about being Americans — and that isn’t a sentiment Obama knows how to attach himself to. He has no personal sense of it. This victory is his, and his alone. He won’t understand that people see it as an American victory.
Rational Thought on May 2, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Well, you can put me in the camp of those that disagrees.
This does not “add to his stature as a leader” at all — in fact, it reinforces what his critics have been saying for months now. That Obama is too small for the Presidency, and does not have the temperment to be effective.
Kudos to the Seal team, and as well, the entire JSOC hierarchy for a job well done.
However — it is interesting that there are no editorials/debates/rending and gnashing at the “outrage” of an extrajudicial assassination without the “approval” of the UN. I can already write the headlines of the NYT and WaPO if it weren’t “Teh Won” giving the okay to pull the trigger.
Secondly, Obama’s contempt for the military is well-established, save when they can be used as a convenient photo-op. This had to be the O’s most cynical exploitation of the military yet.
In the week where the chatter was about the Obama’s not being invited to the Royal Wedding, the disclosure of the purported Birth Certificate, and tanking poll numbers, all of a sudden, “presto!” – OBL is assassinated.
By their own accounts, the Admin has known about the whereabouts of OBL for quite some time — enough time for the Seals to be able to practice and refine their mission.
The only thing that wasn’t known was the most corrupt and cynical time to exploit this information for what is perceived as the greatest political “bang for the buck” by Team O.
I am sure that this will burn up the news cycle for the next few days, and they hope to change the temp and the narrative, but it’s not going to change the underlying fundamentals: an “true” unemployment rate of 22% or so, more and more families relying of foodstamps to get by, rising gas and grocery prices (“under my plan, energy prices would necessarily skyrocket”), and a tanking US dollar.
At the end of the day, most citizens vote pocketbook issues. I hope Team O is foolish enough to think that they can ride this “we got OBL” pony to the finish line.
I can see Nov 2012 from my house.

Can’t we enjoy this without bringing politics into the discussion? The other side is sick with politics, not us, I thought. Let our commander-in-chief get the credit, as he should. For one day, let’s not think about politics – let’s just enjoy a day that culminates ten years of struggle. Let’s think instead of the brave SEALS who really, really risked it all to avenge the heinous deed of a small man and his co-conspirators.

So what if Obama’s poll numbers go up? He did a good thing here. OBL is dead. A weight has been lifted. but americans are always the type that say that’s nice but what have you done for me lately. never underestimate the ability of americans to forget, not care and be entirely selfish.
See this is the problem with liberals in general. they always think the optics or the messag eis important. But Americans want a steady day in day out leadership. So If Obama morphs into a war leader and changes his stance to win relection. So what. we win. The liberals lost last night. they of the anitwar crowd lost ast night. Obama did a conservative thing last night. He almost was perfect except for his stupid speech and his fumble of the “breaking WH address….

Here is how I think this helps Obama long term:
1. The 2008 O-bots who lost some of the love, regained a lot of it. May help in 2012 with these people showing up to volunteer, donate money, etc.
2. No Republican will ever be able to accuse Obama of being anti-military or soft on terror.
3. Kind of a 2a, but accusing Obama of being anti-American or not American enough will seem ridiculous to the Indies out there who will think WTF are you talking about man, Obama killed OBL. He’s as American as anyone else.

However I will say how it couold hurt Obama.
Obama as we all know is an egotistical nightmare. If this boosts his poll numbers he stands a chance of over playing his hand on this. If Iraq or Afganistan falls apart or Libya is a clusterf*** then it will be quickley turned into. Hey he got OBL why can’ty he handle Libya etc….
I think Bush was wrong and made a startigic error to not turn the entire nation’s energy to go after OBL and instead try to downplay OBL capture or death as something that wasn’t needed.
Bush set up a lot of what worked here But Obama was smart enouogh know OBL death and/or capture was important.

Obama will probably get a short-term bounce from this, as he did when he gave the order for Navy sharpshooters to “take out” Somali pirates who had kidnapped the captain of a commercial ship off the Horn of Africa. He does occasionally do something right, and he should get some credit.
But it has already been revealed in the press that the information leading to Bin Laden’s whereabouts was obtained from CIA interrogation of “detainees” at Gitmo, including waterboardee Khaled Sheik Mohammed. After Obama’s feel-good campaign, and later Executive Order, to close Gitmo, and Eric Holder’s grandstanding about giving KSM a Federal trial in New York, lots of “swing voters” will realize that Obama owes Bin Laden’s death to the very interrogation procedures (under the Bush Admistration) that Obama campaigned against, and Republican candidates should point this out during their 2012 campaign.
If Bin Laden had been killed in October, or maybe September 2012, it would have guaranteed Obama’s re-election. But the election is still over a year and a half away, and if unemployment is still high and gasoline is over $5 a gallon in the fall of 2012, and/or if a PO’d Qaddafi is still tormenting US and NATO forces, the afterglow of Bin Laden’s death will have faded, and voters might share the credit between Obama and Bush, whose Gitmo policies would have been vindicated.
Excellent point, which needs to be pushed by Republican candidates. Bin Laden’s compound was within a mile of a Pak army base. The Paks probably knew he was there, and looked the other way, probably because they feared repraisals from Al Qaeda sympathizers in Pakistan, and now they can wash their hands of the matter and blame the Americans.
We still need to keep Pak nukes out of the hands of Al Qaeda and the Taliban, but beyond that, why do we need to send them military aid? In that part of the world, our REAL friends are in India, the world’s most populous democracy, which shares our heritage as a former British colony.

Let Obama and the left ride this. Let them ride it as far as they can. Embrace the bump Barry’s gonna get in his poll numbers. For a moment here, Americans will feel like, “Hey, maybe he is on our side. Maybe he does care about a strong America.” He isn’t. And he doesn’t. And that will become clear again as the smoke clears. You can’t be serious.
The Democrat Administration in place from 1993 until early 2001 treated Terrorism as a law enforcement issue and not as a National Security issue. The result was 9/11, which bin Laden himself said was planned to take place on Clinton’s watch.
From September of 2001 until January of 2009, terrorism was treated by the Adults in Charge as a National Security issue, with the result being no further attacks on US soil.
Then in January of 2009, another Democrat Administration took office, immediately announcing the end of the use of the word “terrorism”, issuing an Executive Order closing GITMO, and announcing a resumption of treating terrorism as a Law Enforcement issue with their stated plan to try KSM and others in civilian courts.
As a result, the first Islamic terror attack since 9/11 on US soil at Ft. Hood, and 2 near-misses in Detroit and Times Square.
This attack on bin Laden was not a result of Democrat policies being the same as Republican policies. It was the result of a Democrat President leaving in place the policies that he had previously vowed to abolish.

If Obama cannot get above 53% in the Gallup Poll–that is, the percentage he won with in the 2008 election–he may be in real trouble because this may signal that he has permanently lost a significant segment of the electorate that he cannot win back no matter what happens. This news comes at the best time because it is 18 months before the election. But it could tell us how badly Obama has hurt his chances for re-election. If I am the Republicans, I would constantly talk about how great a job the military did in this operation. They deserve the credit; and it is good politics…

Info trail started in 2006 or 2007, once Obama was elected, he could have chosen to stop following the trail. Once OBL was found, Obama had few choices – basically it was either ignore the info, or kill OBL.
So I’ll give Obama credit for not stopping the search (which was done by others), and choosing to kill OBL (which was also arranged and performed by others).
It’s not much credit, but some. I’d make a crappy President, but even I could have figured that much out. What else could he have done? The Dems will try to puff it up into a big thing, but it isn’t really Obama’s win, and won’t get him re-elected.

kingsjester on May 2, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Hey, the left is out celebrating — celebrating — a U.S. secret military mission into a sovereign Muslim nation to assassinate what millions consider to be a Muslim religious leader. Not only are they celebrating it, they are celebrating it with overt expressions of sweet, sweet vengeance, military might, and American patriotism. How much fun is it going to be to remind them that they did this — that we saw them doing this — down the road when they try to pretend it never happened, that they didn’t actually sell out virtually every single one of their ideological beliefs in a mad frenzy of relief that their heretofore incompetent president might be propped up after all as an election nears.
“The politics of a dead terrorist“? This is all about politics on the left, but what are they left with now? They’ve chucked it all. Every last bit of rhetoric that has sustained them for over a decade has been erased by their dancing feet, their cries of “victory.”
Watching them try to walk this back should be quite the treat. But we can’t let them do that. We saw you dance. We saw you praise the kill shot. You never meant any of it, did you? “Close Guantanamo?” Ha! “Waterboarding is ‘torture’”? Ha! “Bush is ‘creating more terrorists’”? Ha! You’re on our team now, and we’re never, ever going to let you forget it. So dance, sweet liberals, dance like it’s the last night of your failed ideology. Because it is.

I’m not sure Obama will get much of a boost from this. We live in a very different political environment in which the dems have spent years poisioning the debate around military actions. Some dems noted with bitterness that Obama received almost no bounce in the polls after announcing the military operation in Libya. They blamed republicans for not rallying around the commander-in chief and boosting his poll numbers. I sense something similar will happen this time. Speaking for myself while I’m happy Bin Laden is dead I give the credit to the military not Obama.I’m also offended by the political posturing of some on the left who see this only in terms of politics. I think these and other factors could keep Obama from getting the bounce he expects. That could be why he’s milking this for all it worth unlike the low kep approach with Libya.

In this case, the ‘giant sucking sound’ will be the Donald, trying to take in enough air to keep his head inflated after the primary loss.

Bump? Only from the idiots. As you note, the economy will determine Barry’s fate. Given his intellectual level on economics (including the people he surrounds himself with), the economy isn’t going to improve in any major way.

Break out the BHO B.S. Bingo boards!
Key West Reader on May 2, 2011 at 5:22 PM
It does? Not to me.
The unemployment rate is still hovering at 18% actual; gasoline prices are bordering at $5/gal.; food prices are skyrocketing with no end in sight.
Out of work and hungry people vote with their wallets in mind.
But you’re young and still have much to learn. Do try not to be so negative; that’s a terrible way to go through life.

Yup. I click him off every night.
Key West Reader on May 2, 2011 at 5:22 PM
0bama will get a dead cat bounce out of this, that’s all.
Americans are happy today, but tomorrow they’ll have to put gas in their car, buy food, and those 20%+ real unemployed will continue their long long search for a job.
Then they’ll remember why they hate 0bama.
Moreover, the narrative is already swinging away from him, with reminders that everything that lead to bin Laden – he and the left opposed. As time goes on, the real credit will go to Bush and Cheney.

I disagree, look at Obama’s refusal to secure the border or prosecute illegal aliens. I’ll stop with that but the list is endless.

OMG…nooooooooooooooooooooooooo, not again! What a frickin’ glory whore.
Let’s play a new game. How soon will The Won go on a talk show and which one it will be?
My guess: Letterman, in two days.
GrannyDee on May 2, 2011 at 5:29 PM
It’s going to backfire. If anything, tonight’s speechifying session that follow’s this afternoon’s speechifying session and last night’s speechifying session he will try to delicately walk back the I, Me, My, Mine comments and although it is painful for him, he will give some credit to the Military.
Sigh. Glory whore indeed.
Key West Reader on May 2, 2011 at 5:34 PM
Some of you need to take a stroll through DU and see that while they have indeed made this very political, but, they are deeply divided on the OBL issue.

Yes, he is, and it’s disgusting to behold.
There are a slew of other words that I could call him, but their not fit for mixed company, plus I’d probably get the dreaded ban hammer.
Not to change the subject, but speaking of the ban hammer, whatever happened to Ann-in-CA? Anybody know?
GrannyDee on May 2, 2011 at 5:39 PM
So when is Odumba$$ (Glory whore, I love this name!) sposed to spew more of his “I” “ME” again? I didn’t watch last night. I knew what he was going to say……
sicoit on May 2, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Yeah, they’re so mad they might vote for Obama or…Obama. They’re experiencing cognitive dissonance, and it’ll take the hard-core lefties a little while to work it all out. They don’t believe anything they say — about terrorism, harsh interrogation, national sovereignty, upsetting the “Muslim world,” etc., but they’re so used to pretending that they do, so accustomed to their artificial talking points, that they need a little time to figure out what to pretend next. It’s like someone has put a “Be patriotic and chant ‘USA! USA!’” chip in their heads and they’re all like, “What? Uhhhhh…OK.”

Neither bump, nor bust.
It will be “the economy, stupid”, as Carville said.
Schadenfreude on May 2, 2011 at 6:10 PM
Obama could over-play his hand. If he talks about this too much and appears to take too much of the credit and then we have a reprisal attack of some kind…all bets are off.
Deanna on May 2, 2011 at 6:35 PM
The telling point will be what Mr. Obama says about this subsequently. If he can’t resist a narcissistic retelling of this tale it is going to hurt him.
Once he tells his first person account of what it was like taking part in this action from the war room and the decisions he made and the impact of the unfolding events on him as it went on it is going to fold like a paper fan. I don’t think he can resist.
Being close to something momentous is a thrill and even normal people have a tendency to read themselves into the action. This guy will soon be telling how he was asked to identify bin Laden via video and having done so, personally gave to order to shoot despite the burden it was to order the destruction of a human life, even the life of a monster.
Mason on May 2, 2011 at 6:41 PM
Isn’t
BushObama just encouraging the recruitment of more terrorists?Didn’t
BushObama violate another nation’s sovereignty?Isn’t
Bush’sObama’s ordering of the assassination of [foreign] people illegal?Didn’t the info used to get Bin Laden come from the torture of allegedly innocent Muslims in America’s GITMO GULAG, thus it was fatally tainted?
Isn’t Obama now a war criminal just like Hitler?

While there might be a small bump,it won’t last long. It took too long to kill him. Almost 10 yrs. Sort of like the Mets 1st WS penant.Whhoooo Rayyy for several weeks and then it’s back to mowing the lawn and washing the car.Won’t mean jack in 2012 when gas is $7 a gallon.
