Pervez Musharraf Upset About US Violation of Pakistan’s Sovereignty
posted at 2:00 pm on May 2, 2011 by John Sexton
Are you kidding me?!
American troops coming across the border and taking action in one of our towns, that is Abbottabad, is not acceptable to the people of Pakistan. It is a violation of our sovereignty. It would have been far better if Pakistani special services group had operated and conducted the mission. So to that extent the modality of handling it and executing the operation is not correct.
Musharraf is all over the airwaves today offering opinions about the death of Osama bin Laden. As you can see, he does say he’s glad OBL is dead but then he immediately goes on to complain about the US violating Pakistani sovereignty. He may be technically right, but is this the time or place to raise that complaint?
In fact, given that we just found the world’s #1 terrorist hiding in a resort town in your country, how about some sign of personal or professional shame before you start complaining about the “modality” of the operation. Is that too much to ask?

It’s easier to get forgiveness than permission.
Pakistan, please forgive us or we’ll move you to the bottom of the foreign aid pile.

Tough sh!t. We will go after the terrorists wherever they are, and if you are knowingly harboring them, we will violate your sovereignty.

Of course he is. When I heard his this morning my first thought was Thank you W and Condi for forcing Musharraf out of Pakistan. The road to a dead OBL began there.

No remorse for harboring this guy or failing to find him yourself, just damn America for crossing the border to do the job. The real regret is not being given enough notice to tip off Osama

Since Bin Laden’s compound was within 1000′ of a Pakistan Military Academy, we didn’t feel any reason to bore you with the details, but thanks for your help though.

Let’s do it anyway. Of course they knew where bin Laden was. If we’d told them of the mission beforehand, bin Laden would have been long gone from that compound before our guys got there.
As it is, Pakistan is now suffering a well-deserved embarrassment. And a new, speculative eye from Washington.

It would be nice if I could believe that Musharraf is okay with the raid, but is only complaining to keep up appearances. I just can’t suspend reality long enough to believe it though.

Well hey, Musharraf, I am deeply sorry that your boys missed out on this mission. However, last I heard, Mullah Omar and Al-Zawahiri are still at large — possibly in Pakistan. If by chance they are not within your nation’s sovereign borders, I am certain there are other very important Taliban and Al Qaeda targets available for your forces. Your move.

Abbottabad? Is that near Costelloabad?
Kafir on May 2, 2011 at 2:13 PM
We did Pakistan a huge favor.
If we had gotten them involved and Osama got away, there would be no US mercy on them. Relations are already tense, and any sense of complicity between them and bin Laden could have led to all out war. Being a nuclear country, war would have to be hard, brutal, and total. We wouldn’t use the bomb, but we would have to make sure that they couldn’t.
Musharraf is out doing what’s necessary to maintain his political power. This is just a campaign speech, and holds the same credibility.

This is not the reaction of a leader of a country who is concerned about the obvious corruption in his military and intelligence agencies that allowed an international terrorist leader and mass-murder to live in comfort right under his nose. It is instead the bluster of someone who knew what was going on and is trying to deflect suspicion and investigations into how it could have happened.

Musharraf is criticizing the ISI in this quote, as much as the US. His comments focus on the lack of trust, specifically with reference to his view that al Qaeda is a “common enemy”. Sure you could argue he’s complaining solely about the invasion of Pakistani sovereignty but he’s specifically not doing that. Instead his much broader criticism can really only apply to the ISI.
It’s an unbelievable mission- we sent helicopters hundreds of miles over heavily defended airspace (undoubtedly at very low level, ground-hugging bone shattering flight) right into a military town, essentially a Pak army base, shot up a house in the middle of town, and got away clean. This was one helluva mission.
MTF on May 2, 2011 at 2:25 PM
To those harping the “Your” “You’re” differences….perhaps “Your welcome” has to do with reception (ie. welcoming committee) rather than a sarcastic response to their failure to say “thank you.” Try reading it, “Your [lack of] welcome.”
Don’t assign too narrow of a meaning to the words.

This is the Pakistani government play acting, nothing more. They don’t want their goverment stormed by radical Islamists in protest.
There is no way in hell that U.S. choppers took off from Afghanistan, flew 150 miles over Pakistani territory, engaged in a 40 minute firefight, and then reboarded and flew 150 miles out of Pakistan untouched unless the Pakistani military had orders to let them pass.
In short, the Pakistani government knew about it, but it is not safe for them to admit it.

I’m not thinking much about their air force as much as their anti-aircraft capabilities right next to that compound.
That area is right next to some heavily restricted airspace covering the country’s military academy. You’d think they would have enough stuff in the neighborhood to take out two transport choppers.

I agree with sharrukin about the Pakis third world level air defenses.
Besides, if anyone in the Pakistani military, ISI or government had known in advance, the security of the whole operation would have been compromised. An hour’s notice and Big Bird would have been tipped off and flown the coop.

andy85719 on May 2, 2011 at 2:53 PM
In order for soldiers in most third world countries to use any heavy weapons, they need authority from the top. Furthermore, while much has been made of the helicopters used, don’t forget the Twitter report and common sense suggests there were US fixed-wing aircraft on the scene shortly after the shooting began. If AA radar had popped up, it would have had a short exciting life, I think.
The gunners were not fools.
doufree on May 2, 2011 at 2:53 PM
That third-world air force is flying F-16s and using latest-generation radar systems built in the U.S.
AngusMc on May 2, 2011 at 2:55 PM
Exactly. The gunners probably weren’t there and if they had been they would need a clearance order to fire on American helicopters which is not something any sane Pakistani officer would be willing to give on his own authority.
sharrukin on May 2, 2011 at 2:56 PM
This ‘outrage’ is probably all part of a well planned and rehearsed script by all concerned. Or at least that’s what one would expect…
drfredc on May 2, 2011 at 2:57 PM
That’s as true as it is irrelevant.
Weapons don’t win wars, men do.
The Arabs fighting Israel in their various wars, had rather advanced weapons as well but it didn’t change a thing.
sharrukin on May 2, 2011 at 2:58 PM
I’m still doing the math on two helicopters, one goes down, and 40 guys + captives/bodies get out? How big are these things?
Also, there’s no way in heck they flew two jolly green giants (I assume) into there without air cover of some sort.
WitchDoctor on May 2, 2011 at 3:01 PM
Not latest generation radar systems. But as mentioned by others, Arab warriors are 5th rate when it comes to war strat and capabilities. They do it for ‘prestige’ not out of a desire to be the best.
