Lawrence O’Donnell on OBL capture: Thanks for nothing, Bush

posted at 10:23 pm on May 2, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, looks like our moment of bipartisan unity is officially over. Dubya, it seems, didn’t much care about catching Bin Laden whereas The One, immaculate in his wisdom, recognized it for the top national priority that it was. Which is a lovely narrative, with just a few teensy holes. For starters, O’Donnell notes that the CIA’s Bin Laden unit was disbanded in 2005. Let’s pick up the storyline with the NYT’s report tonight on the decades-long hunt for Bin Laden:

Prisoners in American custody told stories of a trusted courier. When the Americans ran the man’s pseudonym past two top-level detainees — the chief planner of the Sept. 11 attacks, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed; and Al Qaeda’s operational chief, Abu Faraj al-Libi — the men claimed never to have heard his name. That raised suspicions among interrogators that the two detainees were lying and that the courier probably was an important figure.

As the hunt for Bin Laden continued, the spy agency was being buffeted on other fronts: the botched intelligence assessments about weapons of mass destruction leading up to the Iraq War, and the intense criticism for using waterboarding and other extreme interrogation methods that critics said amounted to torture.

By 2005, many inside the C.I.A. had reached the conclusion that the Bin Laden hunt had grown cold, and the agency’s top clandestine officer ordered an overhaul of the agency’s counterterrorism operations. The result was Operation Cannonball, a bureaucratic reshuffling that placed more C.I.A. case officers on the ground in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

With more agents in the field, the C.I.A. finally got the courier’s family name. With that, they turned to one of their greatest investigative tools — the National Security Agency began intercepting telephone calls and e-mail messages between the man’s family and anyone inside Pakistan. From there they got his full name.

It was Bush’s CIA that discovered the courier and then finally nailed down his name — after 2005, and thanks in part to wiretapping (possibly warrantless, possibly not). It was also after 2005, in 2008 in fact, that the Times of London reported on a new joint push from the U.S. and UK to find and capture Bin Laden. They went looking in the wrong place, alas, but the interest was there.

O’Donnell also highlights the clip of Obama saying during one of the 2008 debates that we’d act inside Pakistan to grab OBL if the Pakistani government refused to. That’s great, but Bush told CNN that he’d do the same two years earlier. And shortly before he was inaugurated in January 2009, Obama told Katie Couric that killing or capturing Bin Laden, while preferable, wasn’t essential. What was essential was to neutralize Al Qaeda’s command and control so that they couldn’t launch attacks. So long as OBL was hiding under a rock somewhere, unable to coordinate with terrorists in plotting to kill people, that was the important thing. Which, ironically, is similar to the point that Bush makes here in the brief clip that O’Donnell derides him for. He was too cavalier in saying, “I truly am not concerned about him,” but his point was the same as Obama’s to Couric — that the important thing is to prevent terrorist operations, not to mount a trophy head over the national fireplace. Admittedly, that head looks great up there today, but that’ll be a cold comfort if OBL’s death becomes an excuse to declare mission accomplished in Afghanistan and cede the field to the Taliban, leading to a new proliferation of terrorist degenerates across the country. (Many Afghan leaders are already worried about that.) The jihad’s the thing, not Bin Laden. Bush and, I hope, Obama both grasp that. Does O’D?

In all seriousness I feel a bit safer today with Obama in charge. Now it’s up to him to either reinforce that feelign in me or lose it once again. We as a country had a great victory last night. I would hate to see that victory be thrown away for some cheap politcal points.

for the record the mission accomplished speech I think was a bad idea just like what Obama is doing now like this trip to ground zero tomorrow is a bad idea.

Speedwagon82 on May 2, 2011 at 10:36 PM

I like your comment, and I share your sentiments.

Hola, Speedwagon82!

Eso es un dia magnifica.

For me it was a great, magnificent day, not because Obama patted himself on his back, giving himself intense muscle cramps, congratulating himself for Osama (sounds like “Obama”) bin Ladin’s capture and induced, elective abortion, compliments of the Abortionists Supreme, the Navy SEALS.

I now come out: I am of a pro-life approach to life person, or abortion opponent, but I do allow abortion in cases of Islamofascist terrorist militant Jihadis.

It was nice to see our Lord, Savior, Messiah, and the most high Lord of Lords, so high that Jesus the Christ, Lord Krishna, Rama, Vishnu, God, they are all just little tiny, invisible, microscopic specs at the feet of the Ultimate, most powerful One, Mister Hope and Change, mister Barach Barry Soetoro Hussein Obama Idi Amin Dada II, illustrating the ultimiate in humility as he “downplayed (yeah, right!) his role in this event.

If it weren’t for The Greatest, Barack Barry Soetoro Hussein Obama Idi Amin Dada II, Amateur-in-Chief, President of the Divicive States of America, telling me, and us, hnow great he is, how he thought up the entire Universe, nay, the entire Multiverse, all living things, all matter, all principles – and forms of energy – sound, light, heat, et all, that Obama created the idea of capturing bin Ladin, then created the scenario by which to get him, then created the men to do the job, created the helicopters, created the pinciples that enable flight to occur, and created the entire physical mental, and spiritual universe.

Not a blad of grass moves on trillionth of an inch without the Supreme Being, Obama’s wish, and this entire capture and kill was all the will, and wish, of our Master, our Lord, our Supreme Creator.

How wonderful!

What a humble man our Savior, Barack Barry Soetoro Hussein Obama Idi Amin Dada II is!

Praise the Lord …

Speedwagon, do you think al Qaeda will do us a favor and practice their Jihad on leftist, malicious, deceptive, dishonest, hate filled, lying, distorting media outlets and thuggish “hosts” like the one in the video clip?

/sarcasm = off

William2006 on May 3, 2011 at 1:14 AM

You forgot to reference Obama’s interview in 2008 with Charles Gibson in which he said that crossing the border of a nation harboring terrorists might be necessary:

GIBSON: Do we have a right to anticipatory self-defense? Do we have a right to make a preemptive strike again another country if we feel that country might strike us?

OBAMA: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the president has the obligation, the duty to defend.

GIBSON: Do we have the right to be making cross-border attacks into Pakistan from Afghanistan, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?

OBAMA: Now, as for our right to invade, we’re going to work with these countries, building new relationships, working with existing allies, but forging new, also, in order to, Charlie, get to a point in this world where war is not going to be a first option. In fact, war has got to be, a military strike, a last option.

GIBSON: But, Senator, I’m asking you: We have the right, in your mind, to go across the border with or without the approval of the Pakistani government.

OBAMA: In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America and our allies, we must do whatever it takes and we must not blink, Charlie, in making those tough decisions of where we go and even who we target.

GIBSON: And let me finish with this. I got lost in a blizzard of words there. Is that a “yes”? That you think we have the right to go across the border with or without the approval of the Pakistani government, to go after terrorists who are in the Waziristan area?

OBAMA: I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell bent on destroying America and our allies. We have got to have all options out there on the table.

If you don’t remember seeing that interview of Gibson and Obama, maybe you’ll remember it after viewing it here.

BigAlSouth on May 3, 2011 at 6:21 AM

Yeah, Jimmy Carter had 444 days to free our hostages held by Iran. Reagan did it in seconds by just taking the oath of office.
The first world trade center bombing was done in 1993. What did Bill Clinton do during his 8 years in office to prevent the second one? He had at least 7 freaking years and a chance to kill Bin Laden and did nothing!

It took a 200 years for the people to build this nation into the largest and most productive super power on earth. Obama, if left unchecked, may very well destroy that in less than 4. In just two years Obama has spent more money and created more debt than all of our Presidents combined! Give credit where credit is due! He spent faster than any of them!

This is the kind of thing Americans are not going to accept! It is disgusting! George Bush protected America after 9/11! He saved us from the mess that Bill Clinton and other Democrats created!

zoyclem on May 3, 2011 at 7:33 AM

All thinking people clearly understand that a significant part of the credit for the operation has to go to President Bush and all those working from 2001-2008 to capture or kill Bin Laden. The facts are pretty simple: without that ground work – and without the Afghanistan invasion – and without Gitmo and “enhanced interrogation” – there is no capture of Bin Laden.

And anyone not willing to happily admit all that and give the Bush Administration full credit for taking all the necessary steps to ultimately make this good thing happen … well, that’s a non-thinking person.

And non-thinking people always vote Democrat, anyway. So what’s the difference?

If we’re going to be political about it – and I truly wish we wouldn’t – the interesting question is what true independents are thinking right now.

There’s a possibility, for those paying attention, that all this might actually be politically damaging to Obama. After all, he ran as a candidate specifically opposing the very measures and actions that led to Osama’s death.

Can anyone logically, with a straight face, really give him credit for something that required 1) the war in Afghanistan, 2) water-boarding and enhanced interrogation, 3) the continued operation of Gitmo?

Candidate Obama promised to end all that. So how do you logically give him credit for it now?

Actually, to be fair, I really do give him some credit: credit for NOT dismantling Bush policies, once he realized they were actually necessary.

The far Left may hate Obama for it, but that took both brains and balls.

Whatever. Me personally, I don’t give two shiznits who gets credit. I’m just happy it happened.

All of us paying attention know what really happened and who really deserves some credit.

Looks like the photographer was angling for the portrait shot or movie set up when they make the film. I just have to ask, “weren’t Obama, Clinton, and Biden the 3 same(idiots),along with their democrat flunkies, that did everthing possible to dismantle the programs that led up to this mission and also threw every road block possible in front of President Bush which may have dragged this out longer than it needed to be?!?” Yeah, they look so engaged (sarc). People like O’Donnell can say whatever they want, and they won’t be held accountable, he will never have to defend in a public forum what he states.
He is a wimp, a whining little bully, the kind of guy, that when caught, will beg and cry for “fairness”. A typical blowhard.
He would never put anyone on that would seriously challenge what he states…so he is a one sided, mealy mouth bully, the kind of bully that picks their subjects so they either can’t respond, or are so important (and him not) they they just ignore him.
I hope MSNBC keeps him on forever…they deserve him.

My immediate gut response to things like this is to get angry, and even worry a bit that this propaganda is actually working. Then I remember that no one watches this network, and anyone that does isn’t being swayed. They’re just preaching to the choir on MSNBC.

Also…I’d put money on it that Ed Schultz and O’Donnell are in some sort of secret contest to out-crazy Keith Olbermann. These two lower the bar for news and journalism every day.

Also, the Dhimmis reactions are hysterical. Bush does everything he can to keep Americans safe for eight years, fights the enemy both foreign and domestic(Pelosi,Reid,Sen. Obamalinsky,Kennedy, etc…)and Obamalinsky did everything he could to shut him down. The NAVY SEALS and Bush’s CIA do all the heavy lifting and it happens under Obamateur’s watch. There’s an old Peter Sellers movie out there this reminds me of, “Being There”. There should be a new version called “The Empty Suit is There”. wraithby on May 3, 2011 at 11:41 AM

Just as a reminder, from one who knows quite personally…

When President Bush flew aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln and gave what is now called the “Mission Accomplished” speech, that aircraft carrier battle group was on its way home from nearly 10 months of extended deployment. They were the first American forces on scene to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan. They had been set to depart the operating station when they were informed of their unschedule extension of duty.

The speech wasn’t about any conclusion to any conflict. It was specifically aimed at honoring the crews of that Carrier Battle Group for staying in the fight long past when they, their friends and families had expected them home. For the work they were sent to do, the work they did honorably, their mission was accomplished.

Of course, the media blew everything out of proportion in a negative light, since the President’s name was followed by an “R”. They complained about the expense of flying him aboard the ship. I’d like to talk about that for just a moment. President Bush flew in the Bomber/Navigator seat of a US3 converted Lockheed Viking, a mail delivery aircraft. He did not displace any mail, and the normal occupant of that seat was probably happy to give up the trip, which was a pre-scheduled mail delivery flight. The carrier was within reach of U.S. land for the first time in a couple of weeks, and there is a high priority placed on providing mail service as soon as possible when a ship has been out of range for any length of time. So the flight would have happened with or without the President on board, and the cargo delivered was otherwise no different. Effective expense to the taxpayers? Nada.

However, media crews had to be flown aboard as well, and that required several C1 cargo aircraft that otherwise might not have been scheduled, or would have included equipment deliveries which had to be postponed. Media coverage cost more than the President’s flight. And for that privilege, to be allowed aboard an American warship, they beat the President over the head with straw men.

Shameless hacks then, shameless hacks now.

Freelancer on May 3, 2011 at 11:52 AM

Isn’t it strange that the most credible news host on MSNBC is Scarborough and he’s a tool. Every person in their lineup is a total partisan hack, liar, or buffoon. Mica, Andrea, Tingles, Ed, Madcow, Lawrence, none would make a pimple on a real news person’s butt.
