Jackpot: U.S. finds huge amount of data on Bin Laden’s computers

posted at 9:18 pm on May 2, 2011 by Allahpundit

Would you care for some whipped cream and sprinkles on your sundae?

The assault force of Navy SEALs snatched a trove of computer drives and disks during their weekend raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, yielding what a U.S. official called “the mother lode of intelligence.”

The special operations forces grabbed personal computers, thumb drives and electronic equipment during the lightning raid that killed bin Laden, officials told POLITICO…

Hundreds of people are going through it now,” an official said, adding that intelligence operatives back in Washington are very excited to find out what they have.

“It’s going to be great even if only 10 percent of it is actionable,” the official said.

Follow the link for tantalizing details about how the SEALs encountered Bin Laden in the compound and their reaction when they were told what the mission was. Who’s next on the hit list once we’re done analyzing the data? You guessed it:

Does bin Laden’s demise mean the death of al-Qaeda? CIA analysts won’t go that far. But they have concluded that the operation “will accelerate its demise,” and that the battered organization is now at a “tipping point” that could lead to collapse.

The hidden trophy of Sunday’s raid: The JSOC team captured intelligence materials from the compound that might reveal the location of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the organization’s new commander. “That’s where we’re going next,” says one U.S. official involved in planning the operation.

So at last, after fully a decade of wondering, we’ll have an answer to the question I asked in this post: Did Bin Laden have an actual job with Al Qaeda anymore or was he basically just being cc’d on messages and offering “spiritual encouragement”? Stories have popped up on the wires from time to time alleging that he’s still giving battlefield orders. Some that we’ve blogged were murky yet spectacular, like this one from Newsweek in 2007 alleging a power struggle between OBL and Zawahiri. More recently, in the fall of last year, U.S. officials claimed that Bin Laden had dispatched his couriers with instructions for a Mumbai-style attack in Europe or America. That report emerged in October — which we now know was after U.S. intelligence had already zeroed in on him in his Abbottabad compound. Wouldn’t surprise me if the hard drives confirm their suspicions.

According to Dianne Feinstein, he might have been living at the compound for the past six years. Six years. And somehow, supposedly, nobody knew.

Update: Was it even longer than six years? Was he there all along?

U.S. officials say detainees held at Guantanamo helped lead them to the courier.

In one early clue, according to a secret Pentagon cable made public by Wikileaks, senior Al Qaeda commander Abu al Libi told interrogators he became “the official messenger” for bin Laden and for a year in 2003 “moved his family to Abbottabad, Pakistan” — the city near Islamabad where bin Laden was killed Sunday.

Update: You know, I’m actually less interested in who Osama was talking to within Al Qaeda than who he was talking to within Pakistani intelligence. Let the probe begin:

Obama administration officials said Monday they would probe whether Pakistani authorities helped al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden stay in hiding for years, one day after he was killed by U.S. special forces at an outsize mansion complex located in the same city as Pakistan’s top military academy…

He didn’t specify which agencies of Pakistan’s government would be investigated. But privately, administration officials said the U.S. would have to probe for the possible involvement of Pakistan’s spy service and the military. “There are only so many agencies in the government that might have been involved,” said an official…

[An] ISI official acknowledged that Pakistanis are embarrassed by the raid. “It’s unfortunate, but we did not know about the people resident in that compound,” said the official. “That is a negative fallout that we have to live with.”

I just have a hard time believing Bin laden was just living in this compound for 6 years and no one ever knew it. 6 years? That’s going back to the beginning of Bush’s second term. What evidence does Diane Frankenstein base that on?
We found Saddam in a freaking spider hole. Other terrorists were found in all sorts of hide outs but here is Bin laden just sitting in a little compound in the middle of a neighborhood and no one knew?
Hey, I thought there was no electricity or internet at this hideout? Why would they have computers? Boy, it’s too bad they blew his face off. Nothing feeds conspiracies more than an unidentifiable corpse and a secret burial.

Sweet!
************

Sweet!

In a 40 minute killer kinetic kaleidoscope of enhanced proportions – Great Satan extracted sweet payback, revenge and justice on al Qaeda super villain OBL.

The chopper borne strike on a compound in Pakistan (where else – nicht wahr?) literally air dropped rowdy revenge driven American Navy Seals right in al Qaeda’s command lair.

“…A house eight times larger than its neighbors, with a seven-foot wall and valued at $1 million. The house had no phone of television and the residents burned their trash. The house had high windows and few points of access, and U.S. officials concluded it had been built to hide someone.”

This is significant.

1st off – pretty cool to realize that OBL realized his death was imminent as the sounds of gunfire came closer to his immediate environs. Like il Duce, der führer or S’Ddam – the awesome knowledge that the end was at hand as Great Satan confronted him for surrender or a haj to the perfumed gardens of paradise. And like al Zarqawi in Iraq – the last thing OBL ever saw was a po’d American about to kill him

Equally hot – of all the nations that aQ has attacked and tormented over the years – only Great Satan had the brain power, will power, staying power and fire power to hunt him down, visit death upon him and in a fun, friendly ‘forget you’ way – hauled off the body as booty.

Trophylicious. And a wonderfully op to poke Pakistan about Mullah Omar

Reveling and celebrating the timely demise of OBL – sticky sweet as it is – is certainly not the end – or even the beginning of the end.

Yet it may well be the end of the beginning.

Pic – “Tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.”

Some of the detainees who confirmed the courier’s nickname were subjected to “enhanced interrogation techniques,” the CIA’s formal name for what is now widely viewed as torture. This adds a moral ambiguity to a story that is otherwise one of triumphal retribution and justice.

It wouldn’t surprise me if a few ISI individuals disappear all of a sudden – either they flee or they have reached room temperature.

Also, if there are any unpublished video/audio messages from OBL on the seized computer gear, does the US publish them or excerpts of them to rattle AQ? Just a thought.

HalJordan on May 2, 2011 at 10:07 PM

The terrorists have to assume that the Seals got any and all data banks and electronics that would be laying around, whether they did or not. They have to react to that assumption.

I wouldn’t expect “the terrorists” to know if OBL kept any “data banks” or electronics, let alone what the manifest was. Any electronics I kept would be on an encrypted filesystem that would be completely unreadable without the password. One wouldn’t even be able to tell that there was a filesystem on the disk.

That might be part of the game here. That we are saying all of this might mean we didn’t find jack and are attempting to see what runs out of the bushes.

When we were clobbering AQI, we would generally keep quiet about it for two or three days so we might have time to exploit any intelligence we came across at the site. Releasing this information so soon might mean we didn’t really find anything at all and are simply trying to flush the doves out of the bushes.

Did they find any correspondence between Bin Laden and John Kerry? Ted Kennedy or Nancy Pelosi? Were Al Gore and Osama exchanging ideas on global warming?

HalJordan on May 2, 2011 at 10:10 PM

Point 1:

Obama administration officials said Monday they would probe whether Pakistani authorities helped al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden stay in hiding for years

In the context of:

The assault force of Navy SEALs snatched a trove of computer drives and disks during their weekend raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, yielding what a U.S. official called “the mother lode of intelligence.””

Does there really need to be a “probe” to establish Packastani involvement? It is probably all there on the computer hard drives.

Point 2: Regarding the comments about the U.S. should have withheld the information of the killiing of OBL in order to clean up other AQ operatives before the news got out.

With the compound being 800 meters away from the Packastani West Point, near a big town, near the capital of Pakistan, and invovling a heavily fortified and rather secretive compound in the first place, I think the news probably was out in circulation well before Obama ever got on the tube to confirm it. further, given the reasonable probability of the Pakistan government in sheilding OBL, or at the very least, the ISI involvement, there is just no way that info on the attack was being circulated into AQ channels within an hour or two of the attack. Argument over delaying the announcement is a dead horse in this particular case.

In other news….are we still going to fund Pakistan to the tune of billions every freakin year?

capejasmine on May 2, 2011 at 10:04 PM

There’s nothing we can cut from the budget. We must raise the debt ceiling!!

Any electronics I kept would be on an encrypted filesystem that would be completely unreadable without the password.

Nothing is unreadable.

BacaDog on May 2, 2011 at 10:19 PM

Gee, won’t killing OBL just create more terrorists? Like GITMO? That’s what the left has been screaming for years.

its what Ron Paul’s been saying and then some, and point he was planning on making yet again at the debate this week.

I heard that the captives were turned over to the Paks, but only two females. I’m sure we’re going to hear a lot of interesting things in the next few weeks. Things that make you go “hmmmm”.

Imagine what 90% would have been like.
If they didn’t announce his death SO SOON.

Yep. Excellent point. The POTUS gave his speech before we even dumped the body. Now, people are scattering like cockroaches. And that’s too bad.

Shouldn’t Obama’s willingness to use “tainted” evidence to locate Obama call into question his ‘moral purity’?

ProfessorMiao on May 2, 2011 at 10:04 PM

At the very least, I’m not sure how liberals jumping for joy now will be able to handle the cognitive dissonance upon learning that the operation would not have occurred but for waterboarding during Bush’s tenure.

I’ll bet this has happened about 10 GOzillion times in the last few days.

And at least half of them can’t be attributed to the closeness of the spelling….

HEH!!!

Am I the only one who thinks they should just STFU about the intelligence info they captured and who the next target might be? Do loose lips no longer sink ships?

Naturally Curly on May 2, 2011 at 9:37 PM

Long time ago yes. Today, hell no. You WANT the chatter that this will cause in the enemy camp. The loose lips on the enemy side is now the weakness to exploit. There are no secure communcations anymore.. of any kind, its all scooped up by a vast global, dizzying array of spy devices and personnel and digested in the most insane computer programs and databases imaginable. Chew on this for a bit.
