Martin Bashir: Look how well-behaved these British crowds are compared to American ones

posted at 4:54 pm on April 29, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, is this really the only clip out there today of a reporter making a jerk of himself at the royal wedding? I’ve checked video blogs and all the cable news nets’ video pages expecting to find some hack commentator drunk on camera or weeping over Kate’s dress or fawning lavishly over very minor royalty in attendance, but this seems to be the pick of the litter. Eight thousand journalists on the scene and no one humiliated him/herself? Impossible. Go forth, my friends. Find the clips.

If you’re unfamiliar with Bashir, he’s the MSNBC host who recently spent 14 minutes of airtime demanding that Andrew Breitbart prove he’s not a racist. He’s also a man easily stirred to patriotic reverie, it seems, as the sight of a big crowd not breaking into a destructive stampede is enough to inspire a riff on the virtues of Brits vis-a-vis those darned yanks. Just one quibble: As I recall, there was a bigger crowd on the Mall in D.C. for Obama’s inauguration than there was in London today for the wedding and that seemed to come off without a hitch. We do sometimes see riots in cities whose teams have just won sports championships, but a guy from the land of soccer hooligans has no grounds to complain there. I was in NYC on 9/11 and during the August 2003 blackout, and despite mass confusion and anxiety among the throngs in the streets, everyone did just dandy following police instructions. So what gives?

This guy does realize that there were huge riots in London only a few months ago, one of which involved an attempted attack on Prince Charles’s own wife, right?

Selective memory, AP. Or, early stage dementia.

So I guess he’s noticed that the Royalists are much nicer people than the radical anarchists, eh? How very perceptive of him.

Most people don’t think much about an attack on a police horse.

Show us our own ‘Royal Wedding’ event then. So we can compare orange to orange.

This guy take us for fools.

Sir Napsalot on April 29, 2011 at 5:01 PM

Let’s compare the crowd at an average baseball game to the crowd at, say, a soccer match in England.

Is there an equivalent term in baseball to soccer hooligan?

hepcat on April 29, 2011 at 5:01 PM

The Brits only riot when you try to pull their lips away from the state’s nipple.

(or when they lose a soccer game)

jaime on April 29, 2011 at 5:03 PM

Ya. There well behaved after soccer games too, Marty.

Stop by after a Manchester United game sometime.

NickDeringer on April 29, 2011 at 5:03 PM

I thought they looked peaceful like Glenn Beck’s rally in DC.

Connie on April 29, 2011 at 5:05 PM

It is a bit surprising that anarchists didn’t even try to cause a disturbance, but I don’t think that was Bashir’s point.

To be fair, it’s a gathering of the most boring people on earth.

Well, it’s certainly not the type of event that would lead to bad crowd behavior in any country.

Every year they have those stupid summits in the UK and they go batshite crazy trashing everything. If it’s not that, it is some other political protest.

My favorite was when some young female yob trashed the computers in a bank in the City of London and when handed the bill cried that she couldn’t pay it.

Blake on April 29, 2011 at 5:07 PM

Because Wedding etiquette & Protest etiquette are the same thing.

The Ugly American on April 29, 2011 at 5:09 PM

It is a bit surprising that anarchists didn’t even try to cause a disturbance…

The British police stopped them.

Blake on April 29, 2011 at 5:09 PM

Yes, Brits are such peaceful and non-violent people.

Unless they’re anarchists.

Or the G-20 is in town.

Or there’s a soccer game.

Or the government is implementing austerity measures.

Or you threaten to take away their never-ending welfare.

Other than that they’re fine, peaceful blokes.

By the way, did anyone else notice the police lining the route carrying assault rifles? Yeah. Funny how Shep Smith and Bashir fail to provide many details about that part.

Blake on April 29, 2011 at 5:13 PM

Nothing like Shep to ruin a wedding. After a bit of listening to him (once the ceremony was over), I switched to another station. Which also had the advantage of showing much more of the crowd, interviewing them, etc.

I can’t remember what station it was – no wait, I know Al Roker was on it – but aside from Al, it seemed to be mostly British commentators.

Shep gets an F for his snotty “coverage.”

Don’t see the Lakers going all the way this year-they took 6 games to win their first series, and lost the first game of that series at home.

jawkneemusic on April 29, 2011 at 7:22 PM

To the evil of monarchy we have added that of hereditary succession; and as the first is a degradation and lessening of ourselves, so the second, claimed as a matter of right, is an insult and imposition on posterity. For all men being originally equals, no one by birth could have a right to set up his own family in perpetual preference to all others for ever, and tho’ himself might deserve some decent degree of honours of his contemporaries, yet his descendants might be far too unworthy to inherit them. One of the strongest natural proofs of the folly of hereditary right in Kings, is that nature disapproves it, otherwise she would not so frequently turn it into ridicule, by giving mankind an ASS FOR A LION.

- Thomas Paine

At a time when England seems to be turning away from God … due to some new found “reasoning” and “logic” which inclines them to turn away from useless things like religion …

Why then, to they continue to hold on to something which even has less of a claim to existence? The monarchy?

I thought the wedding cover sucked on all channels with the exception of E which had Angela Rippon.

Bashir is despised by the Royals and was talking out of his ass. That moronic butler they had on Fox is also a weird choice. He is lucky not to be in prison for theft.

I was surprised E had decent coverage. The times I flipped over to check other channels it was dire.

Crowds are easier to control when you insert boy and girl scouts at the front of the crowd. That is a tactic to keep people from surging. The people behind are forced to a slow pace.

Only because the police and military and security services kept the “Asians” (AKA Muslims) and anarchists at bay during the event.

The on-the-dole jihadis wanted a massive bombing campaign to kill the “whore” Kate Middleton and her “crusader” husband Prince William.

The anarchists would have cheered it on and smashed windows during the chaos.

Luckily the Brits have some sense of stability left and clamped down on the maniac element.

Kudos to the security services.

Now, start deporting the welfare imams, mullahs, and ayatollahs.

This is purely anecdotal but, I think worth mentioning none the less:

I spent some time last night talking with a Brit who left London the day before the Royal wedding, he said the place was inundated with Americans who were there to watch the British spectacle.

He saw (his words) thousands who were camping out at Trafalgar Square and the nearby vicinity because they didn’t want/were unable to afford/couldn’t get accommodations in London (he said the police weren’t bothering to arrest anyone because of the huge numbers).

So my question is: how many of these “well behaved” Americans were mentioned in the various news stories?

From what I see, not many.

I always find it unsettling that masses of human beings not only stand around for hours while some elite group or individual (President, Royals, Pope, rock singer, actor) ride in vehicles and partake in celebrations that the vast majority of those cheering on can not afford, and are in essence excluded from…and in fact, pay for.

You have the happy, good citizens of England standing around waving the Union Jack as the elite passes by in Rolls Royces and antique carriages…with policemen facing them with automatic weapons. Never know when the scum of the earth might try something you know.

Stuff like this brings out the sliver of Anarchism in me that says, “These freaks do have a point.”

But it’s mostly the idea that our ancestors came over here to get away from that BS and that we’re all equal as human beings. Certainly we need leaders and should show them respect, but in our system we all have an equal chance (or should) of becoming a leader if we have the talents and skills necessary.

On the other hand, no one drags the throngs out of their homes (in non-Communist countries anyway) to form mobs cheering on those who would sacrifice them in a heartbeat to maintain their own power and security.

The Brits are well behaved in public for 2 reasons.

1) Alcohol was strictly prohibited at this event. There’s nothing more unruly than a mob of drunk Brits.

2) The Brits have SO MANY LAWS regulating every single aspect of their social behaviour (so that absolutely nobody can be ‘offended’) that if somebody accidently pushes, shoves, swears, or even farts in the crowd, they’re turned into the police, arrested, stripped of their gov’t benefits check, jailed, and forced to make restitution to everybody who was offended by their actions.

Any questions?
