Video: Obama explains timing of birth-cert release

posted at 10:50 am on April 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Via Tommy Christopher at Mediate, be prepared to see Barack Obama the happiest he’s been in public in a long while, perhaps since taking office. And why not? In one fell swoop, Obama gets to paint his opponents as nutcases, tweak the press for their sudden obsession over the circumstances of his birth while we move from one government-shutdown deadline to the next, and act like the grown-up in the room. Obama starts off by saying that he finally got some live network coverage the only way he knew how, and proceeds to scold everyone for the monumental waste of time and distraction this has always represented:

Hey, if you finally got to spring a political trap after waiting for more than two years for the opportunity, you’d be all smiles, too.

Truly, the only reason I can think that the White House acted now rather than next year when the announcement would have had more impact is what Obama says here — he doesn’t think his position on the budget has been adequately covered and he’s losing ground because of it. In that sense, Obama should be careful what he wishes for, because if yesterday’s Gallup poll is any indication, he should have been happier with the distraction.

Update: Commenter Cynthia Munford asks:

[D]o you really think that this trap or stunt has enough legs to change the subject of our burgeoning financial problems for long? I would think that every time someone fills (or attempts to) their gas tank, the birth certificate issue flies right out the window/wallet. So I have no problem with The Won enjoying this moment, I don’t think he is going to have very many reasons to smile in the future.

No, I don’t think it will do much, because I think most people didn’t care about this “issue” anyway. I think the White House thinks it will, or perhaps they took a look at the polling with the debt-limit debate upcoming and felt they needed the boost this might give them now rather than later. It won’t last long enough even if he does get a bump from it, however.

First, it was the states considering, and no doubt soon passing, enhanced ballot eligibility requirements, that made 0bama buckle.

Second, he doesn’t look like a winner – he looks like a douchbag for withholding a document that ever American voter has to produce all the time for far more trivial reasons.

Just curious, but why spring this trap at this point?

Good question… especially since nobody is asking it.

tetriskid on April 27, 2011 at 11:20 AM

Conceivably, they could have chosen to do it back in 2008 or wait until an opportune time in the run up to 2012.

It’s sort of like when the WH chastised the press for releasing that picture of Bill and Hill on the beach – later on it was revealed to be a smokescreen for the Lewinsky scandal.

Makes you wonder what’s going on behind the curtain.

Chip on April 27, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Not even National Review Online is declaring this a victory for Obama, although Krauthammer hasn’t weighed in yet. Heh.

This was such a winner for Obama, that he just had to end it?
artist on April 27, 2011 at 10:52 AM

Lol. Thank you. The pretzel logic on this issue (at HA, anyway) is astounding. The President of the United States and leader of the free world has to take time out of his schedule, 2+ years into his term, to prove that he’s eligible to be President in the first place. Before he jets off for an appearance on Oprah and three fundraisers. And that makes him today’s winner? If a Republican President pulled a stunt like this, there would be a constitutional amendment banning the Republican party, and it would be supported by all 50 states. But Obama does it, and it helps him. Please….

petunia on April 27, 2011 at 11:32 AM

I have never understood your position on this, Ed.

And now you are taking the same sort of gleeful in-your-faces “nutcases” attitude you think the president is?

I’m sorry, but I have never agreed with you that asking to see the birth certificate (or other records) was a sign of being a nutcase.

And now that we’ve seen the birth certificate (well, I haven’t yet, but others have), you think those of us who wanted to see it are nutcases?

The whole thing is very childish, and so is this response.

It’s perfectly reasonable to expect to see these things from anyone who wants to be president.

If you join in with ridiculing those who want to see them (and you have, Ed), then you are just helping to paint a future where we have no right to see anything.

What if doctors weren’t required to show their diplomas?

Would you go to a doctor who had nothing on his walls, and then put your own self down with wanting to see some proof that he was qualified to treat you?

It is not in your best interest, Ed, to scoff at people who want the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed.

Unless for some reason you want the future presidents to be able to waltz into office without showing or telling a thing about whether they are eligible, where they lived, or anything about them personally whatsoever.

You may think none of that is any of our business. I disagree, and have never understood that about you, Ed (and Allah). All I have been able to figure is – and forgive me – you have been worried about being ridiculed yourselves.

Well, because most thinking people don’t view it as a trap that was sprung. Ace notes rather well, I think that it is an issue of sente. Go read it.

Now Obama may think so. His cronies may think so. The MBM may start to sell it as one, or not, depending on how that might be perceived, but the public will think for itself.

And that is the most important thing, ie, how the public thinks. It doesn’t matter, really, that the president proved he’s an NBC by releasing the original BC. It’s what they think of him. Just as it doesn’t matter whether Obama is competent and a good leader. It’s what people think he is, just as what was important was what they thought Obama in Nov 2008.

Truly, the only reason I can think that the White House acted now rather than next year when the announcement would have had more impact is what Obama says here — he doesn’t think his position on the budget has been adequately covered and he’s losing ground because of it.

I think Obama is so used to appeasing his enemies that his release of the birth certificate is just his usual spinelessness. Another possibility is that Rahm or some equivalently clever advisor may have figured that Birtherism would keep on going despite the release of the birth certificate. Thus the release of birth certificate may be a ploy to paint the entire GOP as insane because of continuance of Birtherism. Maybe if Trump fades out, the Birthers will be silence and we can win in 2012 on the issues. Elections should be about policy issues–not birth certificate or stained dresses. We lost in 1998, the election of the strained dress. There is no reason to believe that side show issues favor the GOP. On the other hand, we do have some winning issues in 2012.

What’s this guy so happy about ? He’s like a high school kid who’s so proud of himself because he finally handed in the paper that was due a month ago. The fact that there’s nothing there to see proves what exactly ? That Obama’s a passive aggressive who takes delight in stirring the pot ? That’s not a leader. That’s a selfish, borderline sadist. This whole issue, and the way it was handled by Obama, does far more to make Obama look small than it does to make “birthers” look nuts.

joejm65 on April 27, 2011 at 11:51 AM

Obama’s the loser here. He tried to play his trick to his advantage and ended up with almost two-thirds of the country doubting his legitimacy. The ploy only reinforced the sense of his anti-Americanism.

Then he produces a mundane document that could’ve been produced at any time, further marking him as unserious.

I have not been a Birther, but now even I am curious if this document is phoney. In addition to the “evidence” raised in the link earlier in the comments (p 1, 6 or 8 comments down), I notice a white outline around most of the typescript on the page, whether printed prompts on the form or typed-in responses. Curious. I also notice that the left margin is curved, yet only the first two lines, STATE OF and 1a. Child, follow the curve. The remaining lines are either straight or simply have the number slightly lower.

Trump has done a service to our side, because he got under Obama’s skin and put Obama on the defensive and shown our side how to deal with him. By being direct, unafraid and tough.

Trump may or may not survive as a candidate and he is certainly not my favorite, but he is leading the charge and paving the way for our other candidates.

He serves a purpose. When he attacks Obama as “destroying this country” it now gets play in the media and more people will agree with that sentiment and vote for whoever our candidate will be.

Jeez, folks, think about why a prospective candidate for President in 2007 might not want to release a birth certificate that shows he was named after his father, who was an African citizen with the middle name Hussein. Lots of Americans were dying in Iraq at the time.

Occam’s Razor. The simplest explanation is probably right.

Simplest explanation: Obama didn’t release the BC at first because of his name and his father’s nationality; nobody much cared about it during the campaign or for a long time after he was inaugurated; but by keeping it under wraps this long he has inadvertently fed an entire movement of conspiracy theorists and a potential 2012 opponent that threatens to undermine his presidency.

Or: The BC is a fake, Obama is an evil fraud and thousands of people are helping him keep his real origins a secret.

Since he’s on a roll in being transparent (only 3 years late), he should also produce his college transcripts and other records of his past and come clean so we know where this guy is coming from.

Maybe the birth certificate wasn’t the “incriminating” document. He may have released it to avoid releasing information that truly may be.

SirGawain on April 27, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Here is a copy of the Birth Certificate. The mother’s race is listed Caucasian and father’s race is listed African? In 1961 would African be used as a race signifier? Fox example in South Africa there were Caucasian Africans. Africa is a continent not a race. Hawaii was using this race identifier in 1961? It made sense for description of father’s origin. Was this birth certificate white washed? In Hawaii in 1961, I would expect the race identification for Barack H Obama Sr., to be Negro.

Dr Evil on April 27, 2011 at 12:29 PM

And why not? In one fell swoop, Obama gets to paint his opponents as nutcases, tweak the press for their sudden obsession over the circumstances of his birth while we move from one government-shutdown deadline to the next, and act like the grown-up in the room.

Hardly.

What it does do is re-affirm Obama’s arrogance and attitude that he is “above” the proles.

The BC was always a red herring, but the actions of the Obama campaign/Admin spoke volumes about his character — or lack thereof.

The stunt today, after so much stonewalling, I think will only serve to undermine people’s attitude towards Teh Won and his “likeability” index.

Going around the blogs today, setting aside the “BC-driven” sites, most people are pissed that after all the dissembling, the lies, the misdirections, here he is grinning and laughing about the release of his alleged long form.

And you see this as a “win” for the Obama team?

Interesting.

YTZGal on April 27, 2011 at 12:31 PM

I am curious about the long form birth certificate that was recently released. Were they putting birth certificates on those green colored forms back then? The Nordyke twins were black with white lettering, photostat copies. They were born a day after Obama at the same hospital.

Hope this isn’t a “Dan Rather” moment where the typing isn’t from a 2011 unit rather than a 1961 unit.

I’m just suspicious of a proven liar that has been caught in multiple lies. Three years have passed in order to produce a very good counterfeit document.

Also, a few days ago, Hawaiian officials categorically stated they would not produce the long form copy of the birth certificate and Abercromie stated a few months ago, the original document couldn’t be found.

His parents were fellow travelers. His mother, too, if not a full fledge commie. His father a card caring commie. Obama has shown nothing but disdain for this country. How the hell did he get elected????

Little Bammie clearly screwed up here. While doing his press conference, he was supposed to tap dance while singing the Catalina Magdalena Lupensteiner Wallabeiner song.

Total fail.

Dr Evil on April 27, 2011 at 12:41 PM

the only reason I can think that the White House acted now rather than next year when the announcement would have had more impact is what Obama says here — he doesn’t think his position on the budget has been adequately covered and he’s losing ground because of it.

Phooey. The polls on his authenticity started running against him and he was losing ground because of it.

As Rush just said, Trump gets results. Trump so controlled the narrative that the polls started to go against Øbama on the BC issue. Øbama forced Øbama’s hand. If this was indeed Øbama’s trap, he forced Øbama to spring it now, instead of October 2012, when it would have done him some good. If it was a ticking bomb, Trump has defused it.

Like Rush, I say Trump has scored some points.

…”proceeds to scold everyone for the monumental waste of time and distraction this has always represented:”

Yes, this is what Obama does best. Scold. Mock. Belittle.

And this is the guy the media keeps telling us is “likeable”?

Really?

The only reason it was a “monumental waste of time” is because of Obama’s arrogance and hubris.

Humble servant of the people, Obama is not.

Torn here. In this particular case, his mother appears to have been one of the principal propagandists in the life of little Bammie. Along with Davis, the grandparents, and possibly others, she is responsible for his Marxist outlook.

Not unlike M’chell; if she is going to be taking a policy role in determining what we should eat, it’s open season on her.

Screw obama

he is a petty dooshbag who has no business at the helm of this country

somehow he became a lib favorite and an optimists hope o ly to show himself as a corrupt, mindless, tool with really no skills or accomplishments other than the big one

dark part of our history when this sheetbag lied the oath of office

screw him and his commie masters

So the bozo snake oil salesman that said “if you like your health Insurance/Doctor you can keep them” implies that the other side makes things up, blada, blada, blada. This tool has told more bold face lies than any politician I have ever seen and has gotten a free pass from the media 9 out of 10 times.

OK, so the smoke screen is up, what’s really going on between late yesterday through tomorrow morning that this is suppose to be covering up for so we don’t notice??? Please let me know once you figure it out.

I think the President sent off for a copy of the long form birth certificate, and this is what Hawaii Health Services Department generates with a computer today. That’s my best guess. It makes no sense in 1961 that the race signifier of the father is listed as African? Unless Hawaii let people use any race signifier they wanted to? It’s odd because the mother is Caucasian which is what you would expect to find on the birth certificate not White but an actual government designation for race.

j_galt on April 27, 2011 at 12:55 PM

As for the “African” race designation, it makes perfect sense. Being from Hawaii I did not even see my first black person until 1958. I imagine the nurse simply asked Anne what she would like in that box.

pat on April 27, 2011 at 12:57 PM

I too don’t see how this is a big win for Obama. I’m not saying it’s a negative for him or anything, I just don’t get how this is such a touchdown moment for him.

Maybe he makes Trump look bad but who cares? No biggie there. And going on TV to say this is a non-issue is kinda the opposite of how you treat non-issues.

I can see some “insiders” seeing this as an awesome win for Obama is some convoluted way, but I really don’t see how Joe Q Public will be impressed by this.

I think maybe he knew this was going to continue to be an issue after seeing the latest polls and he wanted to get this behind him. If he let it go on it could hurt him and if he released his Birth Certificate later, say after the primaries, it could look way too political. Like he was behind stoking the conspiracy theory.

I hear people saying this is a win but I just don’t understand HOW it’s a win. Mostly I think it’s a “meh.”
