Video: Obama explains timing of birth-cert release

posted at 10:50 am on April 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Via Tommy Christopher at Mediate, be prepared to see Barack Obama the happiest he’s been in public in a long while, perhaps since taking office. And why not? In one fell swoop, Obama gets to paint his opponents as nutcases, tweak the press for their sudden obsession over the circumstances of his birth while we move from one government-shutdown deadline to the next, and act like the grown-up in the room. Obama starts off by saying that he finally got some live network coverage the only way he knew how, and proceeds to scold everyone for the monumental waste of time and distraction this has always represented:

Hey, if you finally got to spring a political trap after waiting for more than two years for the opportunity, you’d be all smiles, too.

Truly, the only reason I can think that the White House acted now rather than next year when the announcement would have had more impact is what Obama says here — he doesn’t think his position on the budget has been adequately covered and he’s losing ground because of it. In that sense, Obama should be careful what he wishes for, because if yesterday’s Gallup poll is any indication, he should have been happier with the distraction.

Update: Commenter Cynthia Munford asks:

[D]o you really think that this trap or stunt has enough legs to change the subject of our burgeoning financial problems for long? I would think that every time someone fills (or attempts to) their gas tank, the birth certificate issue flies right out the window/wallet. So I have no problem with The Won enjoying this moment, I don’t think he is going to have very many reasons to smile in the future.

No, I don’t think it will do much, because I think most people didn’t care about this “issue” anyway. I think the White House thinks it will, or perhaps they took a look at the polling with the debt-limit debate upcoming and felt they needed the boost this might give them now rather than later. It won’t last long enough even if he does get a bump from it, however.

This was such a winner for Obama, that he just had to end it?

“I’ve got better stuff to do,” Obama said as he ended his press conference. Obama is flying to Chicago later today to do the “Oprah” show and will hold several fundraisers in NYC this evening.

Real Clear Politics sums this up better than I can. That pretty much says it all right there.

MadisonConservative on April 27, 2011 at 10:56 AM

I suspect internal polling was telling the WH that people were starting to notice that he was cynically dragging this out for political advantage. They probably would have let it go even longer if they thought it was still useful.

I wonder if Obama and the media realize that there are just some kooks in this world? Birthers and truthers and moon-landing deniers and holocaust deniers, and people that throw salt over their shoulder for good luck.

Or will they say that gosh, these GOP extremists are an unusually nutty bunch, so let’s not listen to their thoughts on anything?

emerson7 on April 27, 2011 at 10:57 AM

If the case of releasing the long form, is it’s a distraction from real issues, why didn’t he release it earlier?

I think the Obama administration polled and found there were actually people in the country that were beginning to believe Donald Trump…the same people who voted for Obama – the celebrity struck, watch and follow Donald Trump.

Dr Evil on April 27, 2011 at 10:58 AM

MadisonConservative on April 27, 2011 at 10:56 AM

Do you not understand that MSNBC brings up the birther issue on every show every 10 minutes?

Why would they undercut that issue?

The polls are telling them something.

tetriskid on April 27, 2011 at 10:58 AM

He thinks he’s winning but I question that.

By releasing this, he takes the issue off the table for next year and hurts the momentum of Trump for the time being, as Birtherism was his chief issue until today.

This possibly opens the door to forcing Obama to address other things he doesn’t want to, either because he’s now starting to release his records in response to his critics OR because people are no longer spending time chasing a dead end.

Stayright on April 27, 2011 at 10:53 AM

I think that’s going a little far(Ed’s take on the Tuscon rally…errrr, speech was much worse), but I do think Obama is nutz if he believes this gives him license to gloat in public.

Sure, he’s sticking it to Trump, but that helps the GOP just as much(if not more) as it helps him. And it’s not like the birth certificate was the major hurdle in his reelection campaign. There are still the little nagging issues like gas prices, food prices, inflation, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, the border, illegal immigration, the deficit, entitlement spending, and Obamacare.

Cindy Munford on April 27, 2011 at 11:00 AM

Ed, he won a day – if that. Now that the issue has been “put to rest” – even if the Birthers in the announcement thread are as rabid as ever – the media will stop taking about it.

Obama may have sprung the trap, but it was still the case that only a plurality of people were sure about his birthplace just two days ago. Now he can’t use this cudgel, and the race-baiting that will accompany it, no doubt, and he’ll actually have to defend his dingbat policies.

Ed, I know you’re leaving for vacation and all, but why the rush to so many judgments? I want Trump and his Perot spoiler potential out of the race as much as anyone, and I was never a birther. However, for all we know, the White House released the certificate to minimize any future “revelations” from Trump about Obama.

Terrie on April 27, 2011 at 11:02 AM

Wrong.
Obama released the birth certificate because he’s a child. Trump was mocking him and challenging him and like a petulant child, Obama lashed out.

Trump’s right. He played the One like a fiddle.

Agree with many of the commenters.

The only one marginalized here is Obama and maybe Ed.

He should be impeached just for being a douche bag.

Obama won nothing – he looks like a guy who was using power for its own sake – not for the sake of people, his constituents, mind you, wanting to see a perfectly reasonable basic document. He could have shown it at any time, but instead let rumors and innuendo build. For what? Game playing.

Queen0fCups on April 27, 2011 at 11:04 AM

Hey, if you finally got to spring a political trap after waiting for more than two years for the opportunity, you’d be all smiles, too.

That is exactly what happened and look who he sprung the trap on. Obama gets to gloat for 15 minutes and Trump gets to claim a great victory and not one thing has changed to improve the state of the nation.

It would be better for Obamas reelection to let Trump continue to kill off every serious candidate , and then drop this on Trumps combover.
As long as the birther issue had some cover it was an awkward subject for conservative candidates, now he has liberated them.

the_nile on April 27, 2011 at 11:07 AM

Will anyone in the media actually question him why it took them so long? It was obvious that this whole birther phenomenon was encouraged by the administration itself…

Dr Evil on April 27, 2011 at 11:12 AM

This points out the problem with most political analysis today (e.g., such as over Obama’s “great speech” after Tucson) which rushes into the ephemeral zero-sum realm of “victories” and “losses” without thought to the implications of the issue in time, even short term. Obama claims a “victory” by “springing a trap”? Even if this were true, it’s trifling and transitory to a degree that can’t and won’t be missed in the public consciousness. How does this “victory” have meaning to anybody in the nation other than him? This moment is so uncoupled from reality and the context of the critical mass of events around us, that Obama’s grin, even as he flashes it, is souring on him.

rrpjr on April 27, 2011 at 11:13 AM

This isn’t the end of this. Obama won’t be able to explain why he let this go on needlessly till now.

So, a point from the article is that the real question is: who will be the next Republican President of the United States.

Yep.

And I’m thinking… Democrats are going to want a say in that… which means there is going to be a lot of unhappy campers here at Hot Air when Democrats start contributing to the most liberal of the candidates… and some may even find away to vote for them.

again, if you are 99.9999% certain of this, the Rational thing for you to do would be to take out as much debt as you can and unload all Cash into things like Gold, Silver, Real Estate deals, etc. which will benefit from this Inflation.

The Fortune 500 shouldn’t be hoarding cash like they are also, this could severly hurt them if it happens(inflation while holding so much Cash).

Oleta on April 27, 2011 at 11:25 AM

He’s not “won” anything.

We’re not playing Poker… we’re playing Euchre…

Trump forced him to play his trump card (sorry). So Obama takes this trick and now Trump is moving onto the next one.

Obama has now lost control of the game and Trump is calling the shots and is trying to draw out the rest of Obama’s trump cards (diversion issues to stop people from focusing on what matters).

We’re not even talking about Obama here really. We’re talking about the press. Rule out the diversions and eventually the press will HAVE to talk about what matters. And Obama doesn’t have any cards to play in that game.

Skywise on April 27, 2011 at 11:25 AM

Sorry, Ed, but, I don’t see this as a win for Obama. This issue was gaining a lot of traction (unfortunately), and Obama was finally forced to produce the long form (which provided no information of importance.) More and more people were wondering what he had to hide on the BC.

Now, though, as this is put to rest, people are going to focus more on his performance, or, rather, lack thereof. They’ll also see President Snippy on stage, stalking off after giving his statement.

Someone clearly saw a different tv appearance than I did. Little Bammie didn’t look happy at all during his press conference. He looked totally pi$$ed off and his words were full of sarcasm.

He also makes himself look more of a fool, because he wants to give the impression that ‘we don’t have time’ for this birth certificate problem, yet he seems to have plenty of time for his basketball picks, his Wagyu beef parties, his golf, his keep-the-wife-happy monthly vacations, etc, etc.

If one firmly places tin foil hat on head…

Trump is starting to push on academic records. Getting the long form out gives O cover for stonewalling on those (i.e. ‘I responded to your silliness once, and I’m not doing it again. The American public won’t fall for the same gag twice.’)

Taking the tin foil hat off now.

Sarah Palin has already suggested that the timing was to distract from the Bernanke press conference.

Wethal on April 27, 2011 at 11:15 AM

Where and when did she say that?

Bee on April 27, 2011 at 11:25 AM

So this was a conspiracy by the Dingbat Messiah all along to show his detractors as nut cases? And that’s why he released the birth certificate today, and not election eve 2012?

Yeah, right, Ed.

The Fortune 500 shouldn’t be hoarding cash like they are also, this could severly hurt them if it happens(inflation while holding so much Cash).

jp on April 27, 2011 at 11:24 AM

If the Fortune 500 candidates were as certain as I am about economic outcomes, they wouldn’t be hoarding cash. From a strictly economic standpoint, it’s the uncertainty that’s killing business right now, but uncertainty is the only thing that’s kept our foreign debt holders from dumping their reserves. When they are certain that we can no longer meet our obligations with worthless printed paper (money, bonds, or whatever other form it’s in), we’re finished.

And I am invested in a relatively small amount of gold — enough to start over if SHTF.

Yup. WWBS

What will the Bernanke say.

Having finally verified his eligibility for higher office (which is not too much to ask), the President’s decision has prompted this reply from former President Gerald Ford, speaking from the great beyond.

Take your vacation, Ed. Sounds like you need one.

parteagirl on April 27, 2011 at 11:28 AM

And why not? In one fell swoop, Obama gets to paint his opponents as nutcases…

At least my mom wasn’t a commie slut.

Media: admit it, Trump forced the issue. Now, don’t let the WH distract you w/the birth crt from what Bernanke says today. Stay focused, eh? – @SarahPalinUSA

tetriskid on April 27, 2011 at 11:28 AM

Obama starts off by saying that he finally got some live network coverage the only way he knew how, and proceeds to scold everyone for the monumental waste of time and distraction this has always represented: that he created.

Fixed it for you.
