Trump: I totally won on the birth certificate issue

posted at 10:03 am on April 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Who gets hurt worse by the White House release of Barack Obama’s long-form birth certificate?  If you think that it might be the man who practically made it his campaign platform, think again.  Donald Trump says he totally had Adonis DNA on the issue, or something:

Donald Trump, who helped drive questions over President Obama’s birth certificate, said the release Wednesday was a victory for him because he made the president act.

“I am really honored, frankly, to have played such a big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue,” he said, though he said more investigation has to be done. “Now we have to look at it, see is it real, is it proper.”

Really?  Trump had claimed to have investigators probing Obama’s birth, and had declared the birth certificate “missing” as late as yesterday:

Anderson Cooper: You’ve said repeatedly that you have investigators in Hawaii looking into the president’s birth certificate that you’re looking into it very very strongly, that’s a quote. In another interview, you said that your investigators quote can’t believe what they’re finding. We’ve had a team in Hawaii, talking to everyone in the state health dept to the school where Obama’s mother went, other families who were in the hospital at the same time as when he was born, none of them say they’ve been contacted by anyone working for you.

Donald Trump: Well maybe they’re not saying and maybe they’re not contacting the same people Anderson. There’s a lot of people in Hawaii. And frankly it’s hard to believe he just doesn’t issue his birth certificate. It would be so easy to do if in fact he has one. And a birth certificate is not a certificate of live birth, which is a much much lower standard as you know.

“They can’t believe what they’re finding”? Whatever credibility Trump had just dissipated this morning. He won in the same sense that Charlie Sheen is #winning! by getting canned and then embarrassing himself on a national tour.

Trump had claimed to have investigators probing Obama’s birth, and had declared the birth certificate “missing” as late as yesterday

That’s where Trump messed up. In previous interviews, he’d insinuated that Obama might be lying about his true place of birth, but he’d always been clever to qualify it by saying he either believed he was born in Hawaii or at the very least hoped he was.

But to claim that investigators were finding shocking details about Obama’s background and that people were telling him there was no birth certificate was too much. Obama called Trump’s bluff today.

Trump’s not gonna let up and I don’t necessarily mind him continuing to go after the guy(hopefully on more relevant matters). But I think this deals a serious blow to any chance he had at the nomination.

Well I agree with Trump on that. And I’d love for him to use this against the press. In fact, that to me is the biggest takeaway from this more than the confirmation that Obama was in fact born in Hawaii(something most of us already believed anyway). It took a blowhard like Trump running his mouth for 2 months to finally get this released in late April 2011 when it should’ve happened over 3 years ago.

Southernblogger on April 27, 2011 at 10:16 AM

I have to say that Trump did win — he got the Obama administration to capitulate and actually show the document.

I hope Trump now targets the college transcripts. What a story those would tell!

The real winner could be the GOP 2012 — if they are receptive to the take home message. That message: Do not be afraid to directly go after Obama during the campaign. Trump showed that it could be done — and it must be noted that the earth didn’t open up and swallow him nor lightening strike Trump dead.

I know it is a mighty big IF, however.

If Obama is a one-termer, which I hope, we will owe Trump a debt of gratitude.

I would also like to concur with other commenters above: Keep a sharp eye out for the other news coming out today. Something big is in that mix.

The only reason Obama is doing this, is to take the wind out of Trump’s sails. It’s the only reason; Trump starting taking polls left and right because he dared to question Obama and people took Trump seriously. This would not have happened if the White House did not consider Trump a serious threat. Trump’s only public issue is his birtherism; without that, he’s your run-of-the-mill RINO and his numbers will tank by Friday.

That said, I would still never support him as President.

astonerii on April 27, 2011 at 10:19 AM

I’d say the American people won a little bit of the fight here. A private citizen got PBHO to jump out of his bubble and respond as his poll numbers plummeted.

If Sarah Palin had done this on the BC issue, as she has done before with other issues, people would be gleeful, Trump is just adding to that dogpile.

Well, I kinda think Trump did win. Obama showed that he could be pressured into releasing a document, and now people will be asking about other documents – like transcripts and such. And none of the serious GOP candidates were suckered into going after the birther issue because Trump was getting good poll numbers, so I don’t think that the party lost any credibility on it.

In any case, even if it’s not really a “win” for Trump….it’s not a win for Obama either.

DaydreamBeliever on April 27, 2011 at 10:23 AM

Meh. Trump’s a clown, but he does get credit for forcing Obama to release the document far earlier than he ever intended to; as you said, he could have saved it for when he really needed a bump badly…

This betrays his lack of confidence because of falling poll numbers, rising gas prices that he knows will go higher, and his failed economic and foreign policies. When you add in Trump adding to the chipping away at his numbers, it was a Popeye moment; he’s had all he can stands, and he can’t stands no more!

Plus it gives him the opportunity to play one of his favorite roles; Obama filled with righteous indignation…

Finally, I believe that he also hopes to quash the increasing calls for him to release his college records, and reveal his decided lack of BRILLIANCE! and reliance on affirmative action in order to gain the credentials that we were all supposed to put so much stock in.

My Regards

How does ANYONE not see this as a complete victory for Trump ?

Honestly. This issue has been lingering out there since the Clinton camp floated the idea in mid-2008. And Trump has been on it for, what ? A month ?

And BAM, the document is released. I really don’t see Trump as being so dumb as to pursue this thinking there was actually something to it, but to put an end to the silliness. And he did exactly that in a fraction of the time it has been an issue.

For whatever its worth, he did the GOP field a HUGE favor. The question of Obama’s birth was never really a legit question, but that was the beauty of it, it was always in the background waiting for an intrepid interviewer to pull it out and bait the hook. Now, its dead. Major accomplishment.

deadrody on April 27, 2011 at 10:25 AM

Now why did it take Obama this long to release his long form birth certificate? Obama needs to be retired in 2012.

I don’t think it helps Obama all that much. Trump’s a blowhard, so this will likely encourage him rather than shut him up. In fact if his press conference this morning is any indication, that’s exactly what’s happening.

I think the big winner is the rest of the GOP field for 2012. This hurts Trump’s credibility and it makes the rest of them(except for maybe Bachmann) look a lot better in comparison since they never took the bait about Obama not having been born in Hawaii.

Doughboy on April 27, 2011 at 10:25 AM

He backed him into a corner and now he’s released something he clearly did not want to release. Obama is now on record. He’s locked into the facts set forth on that document. If that document is legitimate, Obama needs to answer for why he withheld it. He has allowed a decorded Colonel to go to prison, other officers have been forced to resign, and millions of dollars have been spent. For what? What was he protecting? I don’t believe he was protecting this document. There’s more to this story, much more.

I disagree. Trump absolutely gets credit for this. People can quibble over the seriousness of a Trump candidacy, but Trump’s questions about Obama’s truthfulness on where he was born, even after being POTUS for 2 1/2 years, resulted in 62% believing Obama may NOT have been born in the USA.

Not even the Clinton machine got the long form BC released. Trump made this his issue–like it or not–and now the BC issue should be done (except for some who will still have questions). Give credit where it is due.

Trump got Dear Leader to produce his birth certificate. He got the issue off the table for the election season. He did do what no one else has been able to do. He can say he got results and he’ll be right. He did the Republicans a big favor by taking the fire on the issue.

crazywater on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

The other aspect of this is that it seems to me, anyhow, that Trump just baited Obama’s inflated ego.

I don’t for a second think this issue was making traction at all. Even though there was a poll recently that said 47% of people think he was born elsewhere, I just don’t see anyone voting against Obama for that reason. I’ve always felt that Obama intentionally withheld the document to use it as a means of de-legitimizing the opposition.

So what does Obama gain by doing this ? Nothing, really. So I get the sense that by the media kinda taking Trump seriously that Obama took it as a hit to his world class narcissistic ego and released it like “I’ll show him”. But, in fact, he showed nothing but a willingness to let his ego get the best of him.

No surprise there.

Stayright on April 27, 2011 at 10:27 AM

Trump deserves a flogging to atone for the damage he has helped do to this republic. Unless and until that happens, I will not say a kind thing about the man.

gryphon202 on April 27, 2011 at 10:31 AM

Forcing the president to verify he is who he claims to be is deserving of a flogging? Insanity.

Stayright on April 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Next up, Trump asks hard questions about the Moon landing.

MadisonConservative on April 27, 2011 at 10:30 AM

Hey I wouldn’t mind seeing that one debunked either!

Trump could become the truth buster in chief.

petunia on April 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Ed’s waaaay too nice and forgiving towards Barry.

SouthernGent on April 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM

I don’t think there is any doubt that Trump won. The issue is now dead and we can talk about what a dope BHO really is. Trump does not always play by the rules and may have head-faked his way to this but the result of success is the same. I actually think his head fakes may actually work on China or OPEC because he is a little crazy.

The other night when Greta told Trump the banks were still not re-negotiating with homeowners on their loans Trump said if people new what they were doing the banks would negotiate. He said stop paying your mortgage for a few months and then go into the bank. He guaranteed they would re-negotiate. Thuggery, yes. Results…no doubt!

jmell7 on April 27, 2011 at 10:35 AM

Regardless of whether Trump won or lost…

The American people are better off. And the Republican party is better off.

Any lingering embarrassment for Republicans will have disapated long before the election and the candidates hands are clean. Unless you consider Trump a true candidate.

It’s all good.

petunia on April 27, 2011 at 10:29 AM

Yes, the birther distraction is now gone, long before the primary. As an anti-trumper myself , I think in the end he did good here by killing it. Maybe he should be thanked for it.

the_nile on April 27, 2011 at 10:35 AM

“They can’t believe what they’re finding”? Whatever credibility Trump had just dissipated this morning. He won in the same sense that Charlie Sheen is #winning! by getting canned and then embarrassing himself on a national tour.

Nope. I don’t like Trump. But he did everyone a favor by getting this out and over with. Yeah, he exaggerated, maybe even lied…nothing new for a candidate. But I don’t think it harms him at all because I don’t think he had much credibility to begin with. He is proving to be a useful tool for the other candidates though by asking these questions so they can ignore them. And anyway, do we really know what his motivations are?

Deanna on April 27, 2011 at 10:35 AM

I think you have to give Trump credit for getting this done.

Does anybody think Obama would have released this if it wasn’t for Trump raising these questions at this time?

We owe Trump for taking this silly issue off the table.

Bill C on April 27, 2011 at 10:30 AM

Um, what was released was the always available Certificate of Live Birth, not the long form Birth Certificate. Look at the title. More smoke & mirrors by Dear Liar. Now, I think that he’s eligible to be president simply because his mother was an American, so I find the exercise to be silly. And Trump’s a long standing blowhard. Still, kind of interesting that they don’t/can’t release it.

rbj on April 27, 2011 at 10:35 AM

How did Trump lose here? He got Obama and the WH to do what he set out to accomplish two months ago. And what a heck of a press conference. That is how you handle the establishment media. They were livid. He owned them outright with no prepared notes on hand.

RepubChica on April 27, 2011 at 10:35 AM

Does anyone else have the unshakable feeling that we’re being sucked into a game of 3 card monty?

44Magnum on April 27, 2011 at 10:36 AM

I’m perplexed that a private American citizen taking the fight to the most destructive POTUS we have ever had garners so much animosity.

Bishop on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

I can’t speak for anyone else, but it’s the rush to pat Trump on the back despite his many and myriad abuses of eminent domain, and his graft artistry that pisses me off. I’d like a serious, somewhat-less ethically challenged candidate to grow a spine and “take the fight to the most destructive POTUS we have ever had.”

gryphon202 on April 27, 2011 at 10:36 AM

Time for Trump to release what his investigators found out. :-).

When someone says “I went to Harvard, so I am right”, my bullshit counter registers a hit.

sram on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 AM

No, Obama finished it. He held on until someone of importance started pushing the birther bulls**t, then torpedoed him with the release. Trump is now done, politically.

MadisonConservative on April 27, 2011 at 10:31 AM

We shall see. I have my doubts that Trump will go down so easily.

But if Obama did that… he help us at least as much as he helped himself.

petunia on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 AM

Donald Trump hired people who told him this document didn’t exist, and proudly boasted about that fact.

And some people still think he’s presidential timber.

Lovely.

MadisonConservative on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 AM

One thing is very clear here. The media are very worried and regardless of how many lies they spin, they cannot convince us that we are on the road to recovery when we are paying thru the nose for gas and food. As for Trump,I am enjoy watching him make people squirm :)

ohiobabe on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 AM

Trump never admits he’s wrong.

Ever.

He’s never admitted he’s gone bankrupt. He’s never admitted any personal setbacks. He’s not going to admit he was wrong here; all Trump’s going to do is go on the offensive and simply try to wear out the hostile D.C. media by churning up enough new material and quotes that what he’s said about the birth certificate simply gets lost in the shuffle.

Trump has been the undisputed master of self-promotion since renovating the Hotel Commodore into the Grand Hyatt in 1977, and if the Obama people think this little setback is going to make him go away, they’re in for a shock — Trump’s not going to disappear from the political picture until he decides its in his best interest to disappear. But the people currently supporting him have to remember; if The Donald decides making up with Democrats and disavowing 99 percent of the things he’s said over the past three months is in his best interest, he’ll shove a Trump Tower up conservatives’ keisters in a heartbeat and laugh at their gullibility as he’s doing it.

jon1979 on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 AM

This just raises the question “Why did we suffer through this when Obama had nothing to hide?”

Sorry, the word a$$hole will come to mind for many when they read this LFBC. Obama gets NO POINTS WITH SWING VOTERS.

A President who cares about the country does not let this boil over for as long as it did and I will bet you if this proves to be legit then it proves the WH made a calculated move way back NOT to release in the past because the birther issue was GOOD for them. I realized this when Gibbs was asked a legit question and answered “Well, these are the same people who believe the President wasn’t born here”

The birther smear was good for Obama and the rest of the Democrats and THAT! is why he never released this LFBC! When it started to backfire they changed their mind. I think Trump intentially smoked him out by pretending Obama had something to hide and the President had to prove him wrong. Trump has now proven he is deceptive and sneaky. Trump won.

Conan on April 27, 2011 at 10:37 AM

And stop with all the handwringing over Trump.

Given his past record of supporting Democrats and Democrat issues, and the fact that he is the sort of blowhard that repels the more gentile among us, he is not a serious threat to win the nomination.

Look at him for what he is-the guy willing to pie Obama in the face.

Think of Trump as a picador.

A Balrog of Morgoth on April 27, 2011 at 10:38 AM

Trump got Dear Leader to produce his birth certificate. He got the issue off the table for the election season. He did do what no one else has been able to do. He can say he got results and he’ll be right. He did the Republicans a big favor by taking the fire on the issue.

crazywater on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

So true. The SRM was trying desperately to demonize the GOP field with this issue. Trump took the fire, shrugging off the “he’s crazy” rumors. The SRM and Obama Team lost one of their issues to ridicule Republicans and stay off topic.

The GOP field needs to focus on the catastrophe and debacle of the Obama Presidency. They can learn one thing from Trump: play hard and don’t back down.

conservative pilgrim on April 27, 2011 at 10:38 AM

Trump is a clown who would embarrass the presidency if elected.

But he made this happen. Whether out of fear, intimidation or annoyance, the White House took notice and after over two years of this nonsense finally complied.

Clown as he may be, Trump still kicked this White House in the gonads.

somewhatconcerned on April 27, 2011 at 10:38 AM
