Breaking: WH releasing long-form birth certificate

posted at 9:13 am on April 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Well, I’m certainly glad this happened the day before I left the country on vacation.  CNN and pretty much everyone else is abuzz with the news that Barack Obama and the White House have tired of playing with conspiracy theorists and will release the long-form birth certificate after all:

The White House released President Obama’s original birth certificate Wednesday.

The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

Haven’t seen the actual form yet, but I’ll be sure to add it when I do.  So far, news outlets are only showing the CoLB that they’ve had for almost three years, but we should be able to see the original shortly.

The big question is this: will it make any difference?  The conspiracy theorists have long speculated that the state of Hawaii’s law that allows parents to get a birth certificate after having a child abroad (true) gives them the option to declare Hawaii the birthplace (not true).  Others insist “natural born” means born of two American citizens, which is not only not true but would have disqualified Michael Dukakis in 1988, whose parents were both Greek immigrants. I’m going to guess that this will only shake off those with minimal or moderate attachment to the birth certificate issue, and that the industry will somehow muster onward after this bleak day.

Update: Ah, CNN has the PDF here.  And here’s the image:

Note that the long form doesn’t have any mention of religion at all, which was one theory as to why Obama was supposedly “hiding” it, nor does it list anyone else as Obama’s father, another speculative bit of nonsense peddled by the birthers.  The place of birth box is checked as within city or town limits, signed as thus by the attendant to the birth.

This conspiracy theory should have died three years ago.  Now, maybe we can focus on all the ways Obama is failing as President.

Update II: Some of those who pushed this issue over the last two-plus years are now crying foul, saying “Why did he wait this long to release it?”  Why would Obama have wanted to release it?  After all, it made for a perfect way to paint his opposition as lunatics.  Frankly, I’m surprised he didn’t wait until after the GOP primaries.  He could have used the bump more then than now.

You know who the biggest loser in this might be?  CNN.  They’re in the middle of their in-depth investigation of the birther movement, and now their unaired episodes are moot.

So, back in the 1800′s, there was a guy that claimed to have calculated the exact day of the “Rapture”.
I wonder if what we are seeing now is similar to what his followers went through when the day passed and they were still here.

OK. Forget about the birth issue.

Why is Obama’s mother named “Stanley”?

Stepan on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

I think the original original is what is being sought.

This cert is stamped “April 25, 2011″.

Yeah, i’m not exactly sure what we are seeing yet. I’m waiting to hear other opinions before I jump to any conclusions. Actually, i’m not going to jump to any conclusions. (That’s my whole point.)

This long form document shows that his father was not an American citizen.

His son would thereby gain British [Kenya protectorate] citizenship through his father, rendering him NOT a “natural born citizen” of the U.S.

How does this release help Obama?

profitsbeard on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

Ok, so legitimate question.

Does this mean that Papa Soetoro never adopted “Barry”?

Don’t they reprint the birth certificate to list the adopted parent as the father following an adoption?

We know that Obama used the name “Soetoro” as a school boy. Was this not official?

Vera on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

The mystery deepens…

Surely, this is the new issue.

Good Lt on April 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Others insist “natural born” means born of two American citizens, which is not only not true but would have disqualified Michael Dukakis in 1988, whose parents were both Greek immigrants

Are you telling me that Ed still does not understand the issue? Your parents can be born in another country, but they need to become a US citizen before you are born. Dukakis’ dad immigrated to Mass. more than twenty years before his son was born. I assume he naturalized during that time. If not, then Dukakis would have not been qualified either. It has already been established that there is no real mechanism to enforce this qualification and the fact that someone not qualified actually ran in the past is rather weak tea argument of your constitutional inturpetation. Obama’s dad was just a transitory visitor with no intention of becoming a US citizen. His son was a dual citizen with dual loyalties. Is that a natural born citizen as defined in Article II? That is an undecided question. Anyone who tells you anything different in objectively wrong.

xler8bmw on April 27, 2011 at 10:31 AM

Have you the slightest understanding of how ridiculous the theory you’re proffering is? You say that he’s not eligible because he’s not natural born, despite the fact that the damned certificate says he was born in Hawaii. Natural born means natural born. There is no confusion here. He is most certainly eligible, and we have had many presidents and acceptable candidates who did not have citizens as both parents at the time they were born.

You’re trying to wear the Constitution as a tin-foil hat, and frankly that sickens me.

I hope the conspiracy advocates will finally admit defeat. This was a loser of an issue and we need to focus on reality. Obama has just proven a large percentage of the country “wrong” at an opportune time for him. This release will make him look the victim and will decrease support for a GOP element that looked conspiracy obsessed.

I think we should let go of the education records as well. Not all of our guys were exceptional students and GPA as a qualification will get us more academic loonies in the WH. Do Ivy League theoretician belong there?

clnurnberg on April 27, 2011 at 10:35 AM

No, I said for a long time that Obama would release it when it was politically advantageous. If Trump hadn’t shown up, he would have released at another point where he needed to sink someone prominent who was pushing the birther issue. Until Trump, there wasn’t anyone of importance doing so.

MadisonConservative on April 27, 2011 at 10:18 AM

Thankfully, Trump decided to buffalo his way onto the stage with the birther stuff this year and Obama slam dunked him with the original. Could have been much worse if it was released in the middle of the general…

Why does the document look like it was Xerox’d on the left edge? See the curved text? And why wouldn’t the ENTIRE left edge of this document be curved? I believe this pdf is being presented as a single document and not a collage of two right?

I don’t believe we had Xerox copiers back then right? So strictly from a design perspective, is this released PDF compiled by someone Xeroxing the middle part and affixing it to another template document with the overall design and signature on the bottom? I ask this because the middle area, although having a curved left area, matches the background pattern. Forget birther this and that for a second…isn’t this an odd design? Have you ever seen a similar document with this particular oddity? More questions I’m afraid.

The only one worked up was you. I said then what I’ve said ever since: I don’t put any stock in the Birther issue because if it were true, right now we’d be talking about President Hillary Clinton. What I was responding to was the idea that Birthers are somehow equivalent to Truthers. That the idea of somebody being born outside the United States is somehow equivalent to a conspiracy to hide the “truth” about a mass murder. It’s not equivalent.

If this document is legitimate, why was Hawaii unwilling to certify Obama to be constitutionally eligible for the presidency in 2008?

Why was one OCON with the constitutionally eligible langugage used by 49 states and a different OCON without the constitutionally eligible language used by Hawaii?

Hawaii had always used constitutionally eligible language in past presidential elections.

Yes, that inset part looks like a photocopy of a bound document (like if you were copying something from a book at the library, the edge towards the binding would be curved away from the glass of the copier).

Just looks like a photocopy/scan of a doc that is then printed as a graphic onto a full sheet of controlled paper stock and stamped at the bottom. *shrug*

And I guess they finally found this in Hawaii? Isn’t this ostensibly the document that the governor there said was unable to be found?

Midas on April 27, 2011 at 10:41 AM

Has it been common knowledge that his mom was 18 when he was born?

That would mean in all likelihood she was 17, and a minor, when he was conceived. Since he was born in August, conception would have probably been in December. She would have been in high school at that time (assuming she graduated at the age of 18, like most people). Plus there would be the perceived scandal of a mixed-race relationship.

Just speculating, but could that fact be behind some of the reluctance to release the document? To save his mom from embarrassment?

connertown on April 27, 2011 at 10:41 AM

Because he didn’t have to.

What a great justification, worthy of the greatest among us! :)

Why put the country through so much turmoil?

The only people in turmoil over it were Birther clowns.

And I guarantee you, BHO is laughing his arse off about this, and will be for weeks to come.

JohnGalt23 on April 27, 2011 at 9:31 AM

0bamessiah has been an amoral person at best in this nonsense He’s allowed to fester, and looking at just how callously He’s behaved towards Lakin and some others, I argue that He’s been acting immorally.

Do you remember the story of the Good Samaritan? Only one of the people in it was considered good. Two of the people in it did nothing to help the victim when they could have acted differently. Who was the best person in that story? Isn’t being a good person, like the Samaritan was, better than being a neutral or a negative one, which would be the category 0bamessiah fits into here? Do you even care? Obviously not! :)

If you believe that 0bamessiah’s immorality on the issue has been reprehensible, and that that was a much more important concern than than the release of His LFBC, does that mean you must be a Birther? If you believe that those people, the ones who’ve cared more about 0bamessiah’s “right” to withhold His LFBC than they’ve cared about His selfishness/lack of empathy, are immature losers, does that mean you must be a Birther?

I have no respect for the unintellectual Anti-Birthers who have been carrying 0bamessiah’s water for him, and especially not the ones who’ve done so cheerfully. Hopefully, you’ll understand how that feels! :)

To be a natural born US citizen you just have to be born on US soil, and yes, Hawaii was US soil in 1961.

Does that change we have a naked Marxist hater of all that makes the USA what it is? Nope. Now we can finally focus on exposing that instead of talking about this water under the bridge.

profitsbeard on April 27, 2011 at 10:33 AM

Correct!

Why is it that people do not understand this document proves Barak Hussein Obama does not meet the natural born requirement of the United States Constitution and therefore is not eligible to be elected President of the United States?

The British Nationality Law of 1948 confers British Citizenship to anyone born of a British national. Kenya did not gain its independence until 1963. At age 18, his mother cannot confer United States citizenship. She had to be age 19 to do that.

With all due respect Ed you miss the point! He’s NOT eligible based on the pure simple FACT he’s NOT a natural born citizen…his father is Kenyan. Why is this so difficult to understand? Obama belongs in prison for impersonating someone he is not! This BC issue is NOT over and it’s high time the courts, congress and ALL citizens rise up and DO something to END this charade!!

Update II: Some of those who pushed this issue over the last two-plus years are now crying foul, saying “Why did he wait this long to release it?” Why would Obama have wanted to release it? After all, it made for a perfect way to paint his opposition as lunatics.

Seroiusly Ed do you think a President who played the issue like this makes him MORE trusted or LIKED in the public view?

Trump won. Trump understands like no one else what Obama was up to in painting his opponants as lunatics FROM THE BEGINNING. Once you and others get over the relief you seem to be feeling about the birther issue the question will start to be asked BY EVERYONE. “WHY!!!”

Just speculating, but could that fact be behind some of the reluctance to release the document? To save his mom from embarrassment?

connertown on April 27, 2011 at 10:41 AM

Likely to spare his grandmother, as she was still living when he announced his candidacy.

But Hillary Clinton could hardly have made an issue of this, since there is still a great deal of suspicion around her own husband’s birth claims. Republicans couldn’t really go there after Bristol Palin’s pregnancy was revealed either. Obama himself said in numerous speeches that his mother was a teenager when he was born.

When will your time machine be ready?

You need to go back and rectify this:

HERBERT HOOVER’S MOTHER WAS BORN IN CANADA

OH NO OH NO

Dave Rywall on April 27, 2011 at 10:50 AM

The PDF looks like my son’s birth certificate (from Kailua Medical Center). There is little surprising in it. A child born in 1961 has no capability to manage or affect what is in his birth certificate, or otherwsie care whether it says something about him.

The document is authentic and shows there has been much ado about nothing. But the incident itself does show that only a determined opposition and major public pressure will be able to force the Administration and the press propaganda arm of the Dhimmicrat party to produce evidence required by law. Since the Dhimmicrat party is the party of lawyers, every problem looks like a legal problem. (Or a union problem, or a Hollywood problem…I guess they’ve run out of most other permanent constituencies lately)

The lesson is this: Unless we are willing to stand up and fight for our rights, they will be taken away from us and we will never garner the support necessary to keep America solvent, and safe. The Goebbels arm of the Dhimmicrat party constantly buries stories unfavorable to their agenda. Unless we do our own investigations and publish the results, the word will never get out.

Tyrannies are made in such ways. Wishing it wasn’t so won’t stop the national press and state police forces from tracking down every one of us, building dossiers against us and turning families against each other, kids spying on parents and reporting disloyalty to teachers or police, who then come in the middle of the night to question, intimidate, and arrest (just like the Gestapo, NKVD, Hitler Youth and October Revolutionists of the 30s and 40s).

Think it won’t happen here? Think again!

abobo on April 27, 2011 at 10:51 AM

Anyone who tells you anything different in objectively wrong.

tommylotto on April 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Ed has been disingenuous on this from the beginning.

Throughout all of this I have learned so much about where I get my information. Regardless of the truth about Obama, many bloggers and famous writers, newsmen, radio talkers, and other opinion makers have proven they are either incompetent, scared, or incapable critical analysis. Ed remains unwilling to ask the tough questions about Obama’s past. Even if legitimate, this document is a very small part of a large story.

Thank goodness. Although I doubt this will satisfy people any more than the “fire can’t melt steel” folks were satisfied. Anything can be Photoshopped and this would be pretty easy to Photoshop. Esp. as people have now learned that documents generated in the 60s would have to be forged on a typewriter and not in Windows 7. ;o)

I do have to ask the folks here who insist that both parents need to be citizens at the time of the child’s birth to cite their sources for this. If that’s true, then why do we hear Rubio and Jindal always being touted as potential candidates? Were their parents U.S. citizens when they were born? I am admittedly not clear on the SCOTUS position on what defines “natural born” but I am hard-pressed to believe it’s the case that both parents must be citizens. How is that supposed to square with the notion of birthright citizenship, which has been recognized for the last 150 years?

I still say his passport and possible Indonesian citizenship is the more interesting conspiracy theory. At least that one has some merit since it would have been a choice he made consciously as an adult. If you’re going to dig for scandals, this one would be more useful.

As for his grades, it would be nice to see them, but judging from the quality of his writing and his total inability to grasp basic economic principles, I don’t know if we need to see a transcript to know he’s not a genius.

Magnus on April 27, 2011 at 10:53 AM

@Midas: I looked at the document in Photoshop again. How odd. The background pattern runs parallel through the middle section and through the curved left section all the way to the left edge, so the middle section had to be xeroxed copied, thus giving it a slight curve, then someone put it into a graphics program, made it transparent, and placed it on the overall patterned template. I can tell they made it transparent because white still exists around the letters. But, why not just xerox the original document that is now the middle part and put the whole section into the template in white? Since they used a graphics program to make it transparent, they are giving fuel to the argument that further manipulation is possible.
