Video: Allen West townhall on GOP budget turns rowdy

posted at 10:11 pm on April 26, 2011 by Allahpundit

The left will have to do better than this. Not only is West predictably unperturbed by the heckling but the crowd is overwhelmingly on his side. You’d think progressives would be out in force to try to embarrass a tea-party all-star, but no. In fact, see the woman being hauled away by security at the end? That’s Nicole Sandler, formerly of … Air America. When the big dissident presence at a rally is a host from a defunct radio network, you’ve got yourself an optics problem.

Read this Andrew Stiles post at NRO arguing that the public might be more open to Ryan’s budget than conservatives fear. It’s not that they’re suddenly gung ho for Medicare reform — even Boehner’s worried enough about that to have told ABC he’s “not wedded” to Ryan’s plan if a better one comes along — but they are starting to absorb the fact that entitlement spending at current levels means a fiscal crisis soon. Fully 67 percent expect it to hit within the next 10 years, thanks no doubt to growing awareness about the strain from Baby Boomer enrollment. This likely won’t be the last clip we see of a Republican with the crowd heavily behind him. Click the image to watch.

I liked how the officer treated her… firmly but professionally.

I loved when she DEMANDED he not touch her purse, that he give it to her boyfriend and the officer responded “ma’am, you really don’t have a choice”.

Welcome to the REAL world, lady.

The earlier post about the townhall by Rep. Dan Webster quotes an Orlando Sentinel story that the hecklers are part of a Moveon.org and Organize Now astroturf campaign. Be on the lookout and discount any heckler stories.

Nicole Sandler and any other hecklers were extremely stupid to try and heckle Rep. Allen West. He knows how to handle them.

I agree with both of you, wholeheartedly.

However, I think he needs some time and experience.

That’s why I think he would be a fine addition to the ticket with Mrs. Palin. Both embody the true character of our nation – strong, courageous and really smart.

Give him eight years as a functioning and vital vice president, a la Cheney, and we can nominate him for 2020.

And I think that any democrat would fold like a card table with him across the stage.

Sixteen years of presidents with backbones of solid titanium should be enough to right the ship of state and send American progressivism to the dust bin of history where it rightly belongs.

MJZZZ on April 27, 2011 at 6:25 AM

We need to decide: do we want to win this election, or not? We need someone with courage and integrity, as well as competence, to face down the liar, obama. Democrat Lite is not going to work against the Dem-union-commie-media machine. West needs to seriously consider the task.

I like this guy. I read somewhere that the plan is for Democrats to try and copycat the Tea Party townhall confrontations, with them confronting Republicans. I think this will probably be about as successful as the coffee party thing was.

Town hall optics are looking bad for Republican reps. People have started to figure out that the Ryan plan is to essentially kill Medicare and hand out tax breaks to corporations and the rich.

According to Huffpo, West now requires questions to be submitted on index cards, which are screened. He apparently doesn’t feel comfortable taking questions from the floor anymore.

This is just the beginning. Town hall meetings are going to be a nightmare for Republicans.

chumpThreads on April 27, 2011 at 7:21 AM

Republicans are proposing some tough but necessary measures to keep this poor sick Republic afloat but they lack the fighters necessary to bring their policies to fruition. The left in this country has created a parasitic class that will not easily give up their free ride. Perhaps it’s too late and people should just resign themselves to a cesspool of socialist mire.

rplat on April 27, 2011 at 7:27 AM

I hope one of them sometime is dumb enough to rush the podium. Col. West could rip out their spine while STILL giving his talk.

rplat on April 27, 2011 at 7:27 AM

That’s no way to talk about grandma, who doesn’t want to lose her Medicare because the richest 2% of the country needs another tax break.

“Parasitic class” is exactly the kind of rhetoric that will turn Republican town hall meetings into outtakes from “Maury”.

What you call a “strategy of disruption” is actually angry voters (including Republican) who have figured out what the Ryan plan actually means for them. They are confronting their reps, and they aren’t taking bs for an answer.

Funny, the Right was all into Town Hall participation when it was the Democrats taking the hits…

Classic troll behavior: Find a thread where conservatives are celebrating some small event, claim that the guy being admired is basically shooting himself in the foot (in three posts in a row), and then tell the other posters that THEY need to drop the snark and start debating like grownups.

You don’t merit a debate or a discussion, you pest.

You know…

I just have to shake my head and facepalm myself whenever I realize that I (unfortunately) live in the same country as a tool like you.

At one time in the far distant past people like you might have been worthy of debate, but given what you and your ilk have done to my beloved country the only thing you are deserving of is the bitter tears flowing from your eyes as people like me dedicate the rest of their lives to eradicating your verminous ideology from our schools, neighborhoods, and government.

So you’d better bite the corner of that pillow you are nervously chewing on harder, because the parasite class has hit it’s high water mark with this administration, and it’s all down hill from here.

Sugarbuzz on April 27, 2011 at 8:36 AM

These leftist goons missed the boat to disrupt town halls when their useful idiot shot congresswoman Giffords. You can’t get near a congress critter now. West was more than prepared for the orchestrated astroturf. Leftists are so stupid. Like we are not on to them. They are so easy to handicap, their next move is so predictable. Do they really believe they can out maneuver a seasoned veteran who is skilled in the art of war? I don’t believe that there is a congressional district that is more loyal and protective of their congressman than those of us in Fl-22. Did they sincerely think we wouldn’t shout them down? What an epic fail!

fossten on April 27, 2011 at 8:57 AM

I suspect that we won’t see the end of Town Hall disruptions. Of course, the vast majority of them will be started by the Left. With so much on the line, they realize that a White House loss (along with a GOP controlled Congress) will literally mean the beginning of the end of statism in their generation. So, you can be sure all bets are off and no tactic is beyond the pale.

And yes, in a perfect world, PALIN/WEST 2012.

That’s no way to talk about grandma, who doesn’t want to lose her Medicare because the richest 2% of the country needs another tax break.

Tax the “richest 2%” all you want — take away their entire incomes — and that still won’t pay for all the giveaways you and your ilk have promised. You know and we know that you’re not going to stop there.

What you call a “strategy of disruption” is actually angry voters (including Republican) who have figured out what the Ryan plan actually means for them.

Right. “Republican.” Like all those “lifelong conservatives” who Axelrod organized to spam comments in newspaper web sites & blogs in ’04 to say how they were disillusioned with how McCain & Bush had let conservatism down so they were going to vote for the socialist Obama.

jeffn21 on April 27, 2011 at 12:00 PM

chumpThreads,

People got angry with their reps a year ago as a natural reaction to their elected representatives shoving Obamacare and the stimulus down their throats. The protesters in the video above were there only to disrupt. There is a difference, and I think a lot of people recognize that, and are getting tired of it–that’s why you saw most of the audience shouting the obnoxious loudmouths down.

The left believes it can employ these disruptive antics as an imitation of a grass-roots movement in the next election cycle, but it’s going to backfire. People are wising up to the left’s guerilla tactics and it’s a matter of time before people start fighting back. It’s not going to be pretty.

zoyclem on April 27, 2011 at 12:13 PM
