Bad news: Inventor of teleprompter dead at 91

posted at 9:33 pm on April 26, 2011 by Allahpundit

Imagine how different our country would be if not for his invention. Instead of reading “Yes we can” off a glass screen, The One would have had to read it off an index card. Or maybe even memorize it.

Tomorrow TOTUS will stand at half-staff.

You’ve never heard of Hubert J. “Hub” Schlafly Jr., but if you’ve seen a major political speech in the past generation, you know his work. Schlafly invented the TelePrompTer and changed public address in America. He died April 20th in Connecticut…

Schlafly, a TV engineer, developed the device in the 1950’s to help soap opera actors remember their lines, according to the Washington Post. For more on Schlafly, read the Post’s obituary.

But it is politicians who made the device, which has evolved with technology, most famous. A seamlessly executed teleprompter-aided speech allows the speaker to read from notes while giving the impression that the speech is given from memory.

Follow the link up top for clips of some recent-ish teleprompter gaffes, including the one where Obama’s prompter keeled over, likely from over-use. I’m tempted to follow suit but the poor guy must be devastated by the news. So let’s cheer him up instead. This one’s for you, champ.

I wonder if, like Alfred Nobel, Schlafly regretted the evil to which his invention was used?

To my beloved inventor, “Hub”.

Without you, my world would not exist. I would probably be a low grade copier at some two bit real estate agency, or worse, an attorney’s office. Hub, oh Hub, why did you leave this world so early, when I have been a slave to your imagination and creations of desire. Please, take me with you Hub-e-One! At least you wouldn’t have droned on, to the point of oblivion and made my TOTUS twin plunge to it’s death.

Hub… oh Hub, please come back for me!

Reluctant to play the role of killjoy, but a man’s death is not an appropriate occassion for humor. He has family and friends that are mourning their loss.

A seamlessly executed teleprompter-aided speech allows the speaker to read from notes while giving the impression that the speech is given from memory.

As Rush once said; if you believe it deep down in your heart, there is no need for a teleprompter.

Electrongod on April 26, 2011 at 10:02 PM

Remember Wolf Blitzer on Jeoparday…?

… That’s right, no teleprompter.

What’s up with Shep confirming that Obambi IS a US citizen in the video above? Psst, Shep. Being a US citizen is not the same as natural born. The bigger question is why he won’t show the real thing.

Isn’t it kinda morbid to joke about someones death just for a few cheap laughs?

equanimous on April 26, 2011 at 11:25 PM

What is the teleprompter, this President asked his friend
When its creator, Hubert, had finally met his end
His ‘prompter gave me words, it fed me thoughts, it made me sound quite smart
At rodeos or children’s schools, we’re never far apart

On Air Force One, on hole sixteen my answer’s always ready
When I can gaze from side-to-side, my voice is always steady

Then one sad day I lost a friend, I called him TOTUS left
Suddenly I lost my calm, my speech no longer deft
The facade had cracked my face was flushed I tried with all my might
To look both ways but in the end I could only face the right

But now ‘prompter’s father Hubert is in a better place
I only wish that he could watch me work his screen
In the next presidential race

Again my brilliance on display for the all the world to see
The seas recede the planet heal’s Kumbaya and harmony

So in a fond farewell to Hubert these words I will impart
I love that shiny piece of glass with every beating of my heart

It w/b if it were true.

Your logic is impaired.

Schadenfreude on April 26, 2011 at 11:41 PM

I’m with equanimous on this. We are so swift to attack the left when they make crude comments about the death of a conservative, yet this guy dies and is made the butt of jokes for what reason? Because he invented a device that Obama uses? Well, we should be making jokes about the creater of the game of Golf then, or maybe insult the Wright brothers…after all, Obama spends more time jetting about on Air Force One then in the oval office. I just hope none of his family members read Hot Air. Just the thing to rub salt in the wounds of a loved one’s passing.

There’s an interesting word out there we see way to little of in this world. It’s ‘compassion’. Sure would be nice to see a little of that being spread about once in awhile.

wolfva on April 27, 2011 at 5:36 AM

Where’s the hope? “Our pets heads are falling off!”
Ironic … even the guy indirectly responsible for the only bit of transparency in the Obama regime is gone.

Moment in History, “Obama is now officially the first worst black president.”
