Obama campaign manager: Here’s our blueprint for winning reelection

posted at 7:57 pm on April 25, 2011 by Allahpundit

It’s Jim “Punch Back Twice As Hard” Messina, explaining that all The One needs to do to secure a second term is to “build the grassroots” after having disappointed them on almost every front for two-plus years. (Compare how O’ own launch video fared on YouTube to how the GOP’s parody of it fared.) How do you build a volunteer army of young voters by pushing policies that require those same young voters to keep paying into an unsustainable entitlement system? I don’t know, but hey — they’ve still got that pretty logo going for them, and I’ll bet their next mantra-like campaign slogan is awesome. “Commitment to Change,” maybe? “Operation Enduring Hope”? Messina’s working on it, no doubt.

Here’s something he had better hope will change:

Soaring gasoline prices are biting into household incomes and nibbling at Americans’ fuel consumption and support for President Obama, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll…

Obama, like previous presidents in times of high oil prices, is taking a hit. Only 39 percent of those who call gas prices a “serious financial hardship” approve of the way he is doing his job, and 33 percent of them say he’s doing a good job on the economy…

The Post-ABC poll results show that 60 percent of independents who say they’ve been hit hard by surging gas prices also say they definitely won’t support Obama in his bid for reelection.

In a theoretical match-up with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, the top GOP performer in the Post-ABC poll, Romney wins by a 24-point margin among the independents who have taken a severe financial hit because of gas prices, and the president is up 7 percentage point among others.

Even Boehner’s worried enough about this political oil spill to have done some harrumphing tonight about oil companies paying their “fair share” in taxes — before noting that most of the blame will fall upon the unicorn prince and that he’ll certainly lose if they don’t come down. Which is true, yet strange; gas prices hit voters in the pocketbook but they’re not something under Obama’s control the way, say, entitlement reform and debt reduction are. Yet if he fails utterly on those latter critical issues and somehow succeeds wildly on the former, he’d be very, very tough to beat. Priorities, electorate-style.

Here’s Messina urging O-bots to imagine this not as a reelection bid but as an “insurgent campaign.” Which, per the left’s new rules of rhetoric post-Tucson, presumably makes him guilty of inciting terrorism.

I’m sick of this “fair share” bull$hit. Lord, now it’s coming from a Republican Speaker of the House.

Are any of the oil companies in violation of tax law, Boehner? No? Then STFU.

If you don’t like the share they’re paying, draft legislation to reform tax law or raise the corporate tax rates. See how far that gets you.

Won’t matter.

He’ll flash his pretty teleprompter eyes at them, invoke the feelings of the last campaign, and warn that the GOP racists will roll back everything he’s done, plus make granny eat cat food.

I fail to see how the oil companies paying their “fair share” of taxes does anything to bring down fuel prices and your wrong to say that the price of gas is beyond the presidents control. Announce a lifting of that 7 year oil drilling ban and watch the oil prices come down quickly.

Oil is suddenly an “old” technology that we must leave behind, according to these mental giants.

Yet railroads, which became obsolete for passenger service almost 3/4 of a century ago, are suddenly “NOW”.

The early US railroads were privately built by greedy capitalists that the Left has hated from time immemorial. But then suddenly the Left decided that public transport would be the only way to control peoples’ movements.

Our current gas price situation is under Obama’s “control”. How?
1) Giving only ONE (1) lease in the Gulf of Mexico. He could have Salazar approve more.

2) Giving away billions for other countries to develop oil drilling in waters close to the US. (Newsflash: That oil will not be coming to our markets)

3) QE2 has lowered the value of the dollar at least 85% of the value it had when he took office. A weaker dollar means you spend more to buy the same volume of product. We are all seeing this in the grocery stores now too!

Three examples of how high gas (and food) prices can be tied to Obama. Don’t look for that on your MSM.

I disagree AP. We have enough oil reserves here in the US thereforre there is absolutely no reason gas prices should be so ridiculously high! It’s political, we have a green president that would rather we the people go broke buying gas just to get back and forthe to work!

Not to mention our president would rather our nation depend on foreign oil sending billions upon billions of dollars that go to states known to foment hatred toward the US through their terrorist manufacturing mills they call “religous schools” thus placing the US and we the people in peril!

I’m pretty sure that “the recruited dupes”,trying to build the grassroots, are going to run into resistance and “adventures”. The 2008 campaign promised hope and change, and not only did it not happen, things got worse. When the first few “recruited dupes” get beaten up by people who voted for Obama in 2008 I’m sure the people in charge of the grassroots campaign, will think it was all a misunderstanding. After the 50th incident I think they will start to realize what is going to happen to Obama’s chances. When you give people hope and then don’t deliver on that, people at least become disillusioned with you, when you come around again promising again that you will do s’thing for them, you’ll run into their perception that you’ve BETRAYED them. The attempts to re-run the 2008 election are a set-up for EPIC FAIL.

Friend of mine is a poll manager in our inner city. He says the law allows GOTV “non-profits” to pay every voter $20 to cover transportation costs to and from the polls.

If the organization actually provides the transportation they are not supposed to pay the $20–though they will have plenty of opportunity to do so unobserved by poll watchers while loading/unloading/travelling to the polls, etc. And cash payments are totally untrackable unless someone has the political will to investigate non-profits. That won’t be our side anytime soon.

Voters are also allowed to request assistance–frequently of the bus driver who delivered them to the poll–in completing the ballot and casting the vote.

The only safeguard against fraud in this process is that the assister’s name is recorded when he/she helps a voter cast their vote, and that person is limited to assisting 8 voters–per day, per precinct. (So one driver can unduly influence dozens of voters before he reaches his 8-voters-assisted-directly limit.)In other words, the law tries to limit the scope of the potential fraud rather than prevent it.

We need to be ahead by 5 points in order to win many states. Unprosecuteable fraud will occur on Election Night, 2012.

Which is true, yet strange; gas prices hit voters in the pocketbook but they’re not something under Obama’s control the way

Sorry but I have to call BS on that.

More than any other single individual on this planet, Obama can dramatically affect the price of oil, in either direction.

Obama could say tonight that all the brakes are off and drilling in federal waters can commence (wherever those waters may be), and the price would plummet by morning.

He could announce the reversal of ANWR restrictions tomorrow and the price would plummet even further by day’s end.

In a prime time speech tomorrow night he could announce the EPA’s deference to State environmental agencies with respect to development on state lands and state waters; the price by end of week would be half of what it is now.

Obama, more than anyone else, can move oil prices quickly and dramatically. . . IF HE SO CHOOSES.
