Trig Trutherism debunked …

posted at 11:36 am on April 22, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Kudos to Salon’s Justin Elliott for getting past the “we’re just asking questions” dodge of the Trig Truthers and actually attempting to get answers to those questions.  Somehow I doubt that this will be a very popular piece with Salon’s readers, perhaps somewhat akin to writing a 4000-word investigatory piece that concludes that Al Franken didn’t commit fraud during the recount and challenge phase of the 2008 Minnesota election for, er, here.  Elliott finds a number of people who would be happy to explain that they saw Sarah Palin carrying Trig in the final weeks of her pregnancy, including several news reporters:

Steve Quinn, who is now a freelancer, was the Alaska-based Associated Press journalist who wrote the wire story reporting that Palin was pregnant in early March 2008. He told us that rumors were circulating that Palin was not truly pregnant even back then — before she gave birth and well before she was tapped to be John McCain’s running mate. So, like any good reporter, Quinn looked into it — twice — and came away with solid reasons to believe there was no hoax.

According to Quinn, in the days immediately after Palin announced her pregnancy that March, he was in the governor’s office and asked her directly about the rumors. Palin smiled and, Quinn says, lifted an outer layer of clothing to show that she was indeed pregnant. “She was able to show a thin layer of clothing against her stomach that revealed an enlarged abdomen area,” he says. …

We also spoke to Erika Bolstad, a veteran McClatchy reporter who covers Washington for the Anchorage Daily News. In early 2008, Bolstad began working on a story about the vice-presidential buzz surrounding Palin. When Palin traveled to Washington for a meeting of the National Governors Association, held the weekend of Feb. 23-25, Bolstad caught up with Palin for an in-person interview. This was about a week before the pregnancy was announced, and about seven weeks before Palin gave birth to Trig. Bolstad told us that she distinctly remembers thinking that the governor looked pregnant.

“When I interviewed her and heard the news a few days later that she was pregnant, there was no doubt in my mind that it was true,” she said. “I saw her. She looked pregnant.”

At the time of the National Governors Association conference, Sam Bishop was a staffer in the Alaska governor’s office in Washington. Bishop, who is now an editor at the Fairbanks News-Miner, spent a large chunk of the second day of the conference — Feb. 24, 2008 — accompanying Palin to interviews and meetings. When he read the announcement about a week later that Palin was pregnant, Bishop told us, “I just slapped my forehead, and went, ‘Duh!’”

Another reporter actually saw Bristol Palin in the waiting room in the hours after Trig was born.  Most of the speculation among the conspiracy theorists rests on the idea that Trig was actually Bristol’s baby, not Palin’s, but Lori Tipton of KTUU says that’s ridiculous:

And Bristol [Palin] was in there, and I said to Bristol, “We should get some footage of you and your brother and your grandparents.” And she’s like, “No I really don’t like to be photographed.” And I said, “Are you sure?”  And she’s like, “Yeah, yeah, no.”  And she didn’t have any make-up on or anything, but she was dressed in typical teenage attire, a tight shirt, low-cut jeans, you know, and we had heard the rumors before the delivery of this baby also, that Bristol was pregnant, and so, when my photographer and I got to the hospital and we saw her, I thought, well, clearly there’s no way that that girl just delivered a baby seven hours ago.

Elliott also displays pictures of an obviously pregnant Sarah Palin taken in February 2008 at a public conference, as well as other photos taken at the same time.  Those pictures, however, have been known for quite a long time.  In fact, I wrote about them in September 2008 when the nonsensical conspiracy theories began arising, showing plenty of contemporary evidence of Palin’s pregnancy.

Those pictures did nothing to quell the conspiracy theories, and I’m afraid that Elliott’s fine work at Salon won’t have much effect, either.  Conspiracy theorists don’t engage in rational thinking, where testimony from at least a half-dozen reporters and the doctor’s own statements plus photographic evidence would be more than sufficient to put an issue to rest.  Those who have built entire industries out of their paranoia won’t give them up easily if at all — and that goes for all of the other forms of trutherism as well.

From the article:

But the larger point is that continuously demanding more “proof” on an issue about which there is already overwhelming evidence is either irrational or disingenuous.

Bingo.

There is a difference. For reasons of his own, Mr. Obama is refusing to release a long form birth certificate (the State of Hawaii is of the opinion that his approval is needed). Most of the Birther stuff would be dispelled in that instant, leaving only the kernel of nutcakes who cannot believe the evidence before their eyes.

Then the two cases would be identical — but not before.

Seriously? This is still an issue?

anniekc on April 22, 2011 at 11:44 AM

It’s like I said in the headlines thread–one of the reasons they attack Sarah’s family to get at Sarah is because they are afraid of her pro-life, moral, Christian influence. Some of them do believe she hasn’t a prayer against their Messiah, so they don’t care if she runs. They just want to destroy her so her worldview doesn’t get legitimized–that way they don’t have to face up to their degenerate, immoral, depravity.

Once she brought Trig to term and birthed him, the condemnation of the emptiness of the “compassion” of the left was revealed, and they can’t live with it. So they have to destroy her, and what better way than through her family.

Caper29 on April 22, 2011 at 11:49 AM

This whole thing is utterly ridiculous. There is another thing that points to Sarah being the mother of Trig–the fact that he has Downs and she was over 40 when she had him. Women significantly increase their chances of giving birth to a child with Downs should they conceive after the age of 40. That, in addition to other obvious things, indicated to me that Sarah was indeed Trig’s mother.

Like I said on the other thread, this nonsense is being fed primarily by gay people who have zero actual experience with pregnancy or childbirth.

It may have been an unusual way to handle a pregnancy, but it is easily understandable if you know anything about trying to be an effective executive while being pregnant. Having been fired twice essentially for being pregnant, I can totally understand why Gov. Palin wanted to delay the announcment of her pregnancy as long as possible. She also knew that Trig had Down Syndrome, and wanted to avoid all the sexist questioning about why she decided to have him and how she would cope with a special needs baby while being Governor.

We live in times in which births are questioned both left and right. I guess the pro-life movement has made great strides on getting into conspiracy theories since the 1960′s moon landing faking and Kennedy assassinations.

You also have to understand the contempt the Left has for large families. Palin’s enemies in Alaska hammered her from, the beginning of her career for being a serial mother. Big families are considered trashy and declasse by liberals. Women are supposed to focus on their careers and only have one or two kids to show that they are really women, and then give them to a nanny to raise. And of course, they are supposed to abort a baby with any kind of defect.

An insidious form of sexism. If you want to hurt a woman and take her off her political game–go after her children. Particularly if she’s a white Conservative female. You can say anything you want about a white Conservative female from calling her the C-word on nightly cable shows to creating a likeness of her in porn movies to sports announcers disrespectfully lusting after her and reducing her to a sex-object or caricuture. You can also insinuate incestuous relationships within her family, call her helpless toddler son the ‘R’ word etc. etc. Sky’s the limit. All in fun, man. Don’t be so sensitive.

Just don’t you go dare and breathe a negative word about a far left Black man, his wife, or his two daughters–or else you’re dead man. The PC agents gonna be knockin’ your door down.

Two types — the first that just wants to foment distrust of all things Palin. They don’t really believe the story, but they hope others will and it will make them somehow decide she’s not fit to hold any public office.

The other type is are the useful idiots who actually do believe this, either because they’re dumb enough to take the theories of other leftist types as gospel, or because they hate Palin so much that anything anyone says negatively about her must automatically be true. And you can’t argue with these types, because even if you present all the contradicting evidence in the world, they’ll just blow off the argument by pretty much saying even if it’s not true, it should be (and once you’re gone, they’ll go back to believing it’s true anyway).

Birthers and Trig-truthers are basically alike in mindset. They are filled with misinformation that they are convinced HAS to be true because they hate the person in question. When they are confronted with facts that contradict their beliefs, they change the subject to something tangential and irrelevant.

For example, when Birthers get proven wrong in various claims they’ll revert to: “Where are his college transcripts???”

When Trig-truthers get proven wrong it becomes: “Why did she fly 10 hours after her water broke????”

I agree with most of what you say save for the part about liberal women and feminists promoting just 1 or 2 kids at most for women focusing on their careers. I think that in actuality they promote no child at all because carrying a baby is considered more a “disease” or an unfair weakness that promotes the differences between men and women, and as such you must ignore your natural attributes and abilities for the sake of sexual equality.

See? That is the problem. Many of the same people that denounce this truly horrific and shameless attack on Trigg and that call this for what it is are the same people that keep going on and on about the famous birth certificate. Hypocrisy? Maybe. But worse yet we are no better than the left for sticking to such b/s that by all legal means and precedents has been proven untrue.

No. Rather than following an idiot like Trump that wants attention and that has as much conservative values as Nancy Pelosi let’s focus on supporting candidates focused on the REAL issues and the terribly bad and incompetent policies of one of the worst presidents in history. Let’s beat Obama with the issues otherwise we will loose the independents that we need in next years elections.

Obama is laughing to the bank the more people keep talking about the birth certificate the less they are focusing on bad policy after bad policy and the decay of the country. Not only that but the birther issue benefits him by a) distracting from the real issues, b) driving independents away from the “crazy right”, c) (and this is just a theory) if a candidate drives this to the elections Obama will produce the long form anyway and dismantle any credibility the right has to debate the crap this president pulls off every day. The moment we loose credibility we are in serious trouble, and Trump is not helping.

So, what was done to Trigg and the Palin family should be denounced and seriously criticized by everyone. But let the right use this moment as well to look at the mirror and ask “if it is silly and stupid for the left to come up with conspiracies what better are we on the right for doing the same (even if the birth certificate is miles away from being insulting as what was done to Trigg)?”

Conspiracies don’t win elections. Issues do. Let the world see how full of crap the left is in coming up with stories like this and let’s not compete at this level. This president gives us something everyday that will be great come the campaigns. Let’s stick to those.

The pictures that the Truthers love to point to – the ones that show Palin not looking very pregnant – all claim that they were taken about a month before Trig was born, and they call him a full term baby. He was born a month early, so IF the pics were from a month before he was born, she was only 7 mos. pregnant, not 8, as they claim.

They are whack, anyway.

sarainitaly on April 22, 2011 at 1:18 PM

It’s called slinging mud. The theory is that some of it will stick. Then there are the idiots who constantly equate birthers with 911 truthers or in this case Trig truthers. Stop and think about it for just one moment. Obama could stop this by making one phone call to release his BC and all of his college transcripts and the birther conspiracy theory would be over. One phone call! The 911 whackos however will need every scientist and engineer plus the CIA and the FBI to all come forward and explain the theory of an “Inside job”. Then there is the Trig conspiracy and it would take the doctor that delivered to break his Hippocratic oath to testify.
Then all of the people that saw Palin pregnant would have to take lie detector test and sodium pentothal to prove that they are not lying. And then of course they would have to do a DNA with a doctor picked by Slate or KOS to qualify as truthful. Also, all of the Palin family would be required to have affidavits as to there where abouts on the day of the births. But with one phone call Obama could clear up the BC birthers. There is no comparison.

Only one thing wrong with your rant. Trig isn’t running for president.

JannyMae on April 22, 2011 at 1:36 PM

There are a few more things wrong with it than that.

Ad Hominem
Bandwagon Argument
Argument By Dismissal
Argument By Emotive Language
Argument that what has not yet been proven false must be true
Argument From Spurious Similarity

sharrukin on April 22, 2011 at 1:51 PM

OMG that was awful… Is the girl okay? What happened to her? Here in Los Angeles, at the Dodger opening game, two Latino gang members beat up a white Giants fan and put him in a coma be has not come out of. Dodger Stadium has now been taken over by at least 6 diffent Latino gangs and it is no longer safe there.

CCRWM on April 22, 2011 at 12:27 PM

Well, MAYBE BEFORE THE LAPD (thats Los Angeles Police Department, crr6) started working the games in uniform with badges and weapons. They are even ticketing cars in the parking lot with expired registration! I would safe that NOW it is safe at Dodger Stadium; there is (finally) a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for bad behavior…

Khun Joe on April 22, 2011 at 1:52 PM

If you are interested at 12 midnight EST Turner Classic Movies is showing the movie Susan Slade (1961)about a woman who raises her daughter’s baby as her own.

And by the way to prove that fact is stranger than fiction:

The world famous actor Jack Nicholson was raised by a woman who purported to be his mother (actually his grandmother) while his real mother was the woman he called his sister.

technopeasant on April 22, 2011 at 1:54 PM

The pictures that the Truthers love to point to – the ones that show Palin not looking very pregnant – all claim that they were taken about a month before Trig was born, and they call him a full term baby. He was born a month early, so IF the pics were from a month before he was born, she was only 7 mos. pregnant, not 8, as they claim.

They are whack, anyway.

sarainitaly on April 22, 2011 at 1:18 PM

But no woman ever carried a baby that long without showing. Or declined to tell the world she was pregnant for a long time. Don’t you know that???

/s

rockmom on April 22, 2011 at 1:55 PM

I passed for “no way in H* is she pregnant” until 6+ mos and I gained 60 pounds and had a 9.8 lb baby who was two weeks overdue (c section thank the lord.) Palin had a tr21 baby (underweight usually) a month early.

These junior nurse practitioners can just SHUT UP already.

They don’t even know the dif between a small amnio leak and water breaking. Also Sarah murdered her baby with reckless flying, or something.

SarahW on April 22, 2011 at 2:11 PM

And for what it’s worth I was 115 pounds starting out, not some big girl with confusing girth.

technopeasant on April 22, 2011 at 1:54 PM

Same situation for the serial killer Ted Bundy.

AZCoyote on April 22, 2011 at 2:23 PM

There is absolutely no reason for Sara to post pictures of the precise location of Trig’s birth.
We all know what one looks like.

Why does anyone care about her kid? I don’t get it.

Alden Pyle on April 22, 2011 at 11:55 AM

I don’t think lefties do… that’s the point. They are sorta anti-Trig which is just sick.

MeatHeadinCA on April 22, 2011 at 12:01 PM

I’m sure that for a lot of them, seeing a successful person who that obviously has kids brings up personal conflicts over their own choices that precluded them doing the same.

Count to 10 on April 22, 2011 at 2:44 PM

Conspiracies don’t win elections. Issues do. Let the world see how full of crap the left is in coming up with stories like this and let’s not compete at this level. This president gives us something everyday that will be great come the campaigns. Let’s stick to those.

ptcamn on April 22, 2011 at 12:53 PM

People are holding on to it in the mistaken belief (dare I say “hope”) that if it is, indeed, proven that he’s not a natural born citizen then all the policies that have gotten us into this huge mess will go away with a magic reset button erasing his entire presidency.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Even if we were to find out – beyond a shadow of a doubt – that he is some foreign national, NOTHING will hapeen. Congress will do nothing and the supremes don’t have the power to do anything.

vapig on April 22, 2011 at 3:13 PM

Yep. Any rules about the consequences of electing a foreign born President would have to have been in place before one was elected. There are none, so, therefore, there are no such consequences.

Count to 10 on April 22, 2011 at 3:17 PM

Well, the backup charge is already being finished up: Viz., “Okay Trig is her child but she was maliciously reckless in travelling during that last trimester. What kind of woman does that to her child?”

See? She’s still evil.

SteveMG on April 22, 2011 at 12:02 PM

It’s already been done.

In 2008, Alan Colmes brought this up on his website and radio show, that it was irresponsible for Palin to be in Texas, and when she had a fluid leak, jump on a plane back to Anchorage. He asserted a good mother would have just checked into a Dallas hospital and had the baby there.

He also was speculating that the plane ride may have caused her child’s disability. Yes, he blamed Trig’s Down Syndrome on Palin’s decision to return home for the birth.

The childless, at the time unmarried Alan Colmes accusing a female Governor who had given birth 4 times before of harming her own baby.

He got absolutely roasted on his website and callers to his show, even liberals were torching his ignorance and maliciousness.

He retracted and apologized then next day, after some lame attempts to stick with it.

In a related story, I remember Pat Summit, the Hall of Fame 6 time national champion women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, telling a similar story to Palin’s.

She was near the end of her pregnancy, on a recruiting trip far from home, when her water broke in some prospect’s living room, in the middle of a recruiting pitch.

She said, “I’ll be damned if I’m giving birth here, my baby will be born in Tennessee! Get me home now!”

She went straight to the airport, was in labor all the way home, hit the hospital in Knoxville and had her baby in Tennessee.

I’ve never heard anyone question Pat Summit’s decision.

Brian1972 on April 22, 2011 at 3:30 PM

I’ve often thought that Sarah Palin and Pat Summit should have dinner sometime.

They have a lot in common, both being girls’ basketball champions, and probably many other things.

Brian1972 on April 22, 2011 at 3:33 PM

Mr. Debunker refers to a preponderance of evidence that BO was born in Hawaii, but all we’ve been shown is a document that acknowledges a living baby boy. This is not proof of anything other than Obama’s existence (which we are all aware of).

Show me his paper trail. I want his admissions papers, scholarships papers, and the papers he wrote. Surely he must have written something in all those years in the Ivy League.

Comparing Andrew Sullivan’s gynecological obsession to a VALID CURIOSITY about the origins of one Mr. B. Soetero-Obama is ridiculous.

You raise a good point here.

I make a distinction between the two things.

I would also like to get at Obama’s college records and so forth.

It is strange that we can’t have any of that stuff, but that is a little different than the specific birther theories, that he was born in Kenya or he was a Muslim, and that if only someone would prove this his entire Presidency would be instantly illegitimate and be wiped away.

I think that is a pipe dream that will never come true.

There is a little matter of the Congress having passed all that crap, too.

Brian1972 on April 22, 2011 at 3:43 PM

The Reporter is obviously in it right.

TimeTraveler on April 22, 2011 at 3:52 PM

People, people: The photos prove nothing. Palin just had a pregnancy pillow strapped to her torso to fool everyone. And as for Bristol being in the waiting room, that was clearly just her evil twin brought in by Todd and Sarah to impersonate her. I mean, duh, it’s all so obvious. I saw the exact same thing on Days of our Lives last week.

Harvard Law “Professor” Laurence Tribe claimed a few years back that O’bama was the best student he ever had.

However, a few years earlier-but still well after he had O’bama as a “student”-Tribe had named another one of his students as the best student he ever had. That other student was a female.

We all know how much O’bama hearts Expiration Dates. Now we know the origin!

The whole Trig Trutherism thing is just a way for libs to says she tried to kill her kid by not going directly to the hospital in Texas. Only the dumbest of the dumb think it is someone else’s.

Bull. Bristol Palin is Trig’s mother and Trig also planned and executed the 911 attacks. Don’t ask me how, just go with it.
Bishop on April 22, 2011 at 11:46 AM

Oh please!
That’s ridiculous!

Everybody knows Trig was bombing Pearl Harbor from the Romulan battle cruiser Bristol Palin hijacked in the Laurentian star system when the 911 attacks happened!

It’s like the JFK assassination. There are people who will believe in a conspiracy no matter what proof is presented. Others will continue to knowingly push lies as long as they stand to gain from it.

You mean that the JFK assassination was not an extraordinarily elaborate suicide.
