Michele Bachmann: Obama’s certification of live birth is good enough for me

posted at 8:18 pm on April 20, 2011 by Allahpundit

Skip ahead to 2:55 for the key bit. I think I know what’s going on here, but it’s better that you watch and form your own judgment. The key exchange:

Stephanopoulos: Well I have the president’s certificate right here. It’s certified, it’s got a certification number. It’s got the registrar of the state signed. It’s got a seal on it. And it says ‘this copy serves as prima facie evidence of the fact of birth in any court proceeding.’

Bachmann: Well, then that should settle it.

Stephanopoulos: So it’s over?

Bachmann: That’s what should settle it. I take the president at his word and I think– again I would have no problem and apparently the president wouldn’t either. Introduce that, we’re done. Move on.

Stephanopoulos: Well this has been introduced. So this story is over?

Bachmann: Well as long as someone introduces it I guess it’s over.

Even a RINO candy-ass non-Birther like me is well enough acquainted with the nuts and bolts of the issue to know that Stephanopoulos doesn’t have his “birth certificate” in hand there. He has the Certification of Live Birth, the same document produced by The One’s campaign three years ago showing that he was born in Hawaii, which is based on information in the long-form birth certificate but isn’t the same thing. The actual long-form birth certificate is still under lock and key at the Hawaii health department; it does exist, according to a former department chief who says she’s seen it, and it does authenticate Obama’s birth in Hawaii, but neither Steph nor anyone else will get a copy until The One requests one and hands it out. Maybe Stephanopoulos knows that and is being coy by offering the COLB to Bachmann to see how she’d react, or maybe he hasn’t done his homework and genuinely thinks this is the secret document about which Birthers have been obsessing.

More interesting, though, is Bachmann’s reply: Either she’s so eager to be done with this issue that she’s willing to play along with Steph’s ignorance to lay it to rest, or she herself is so disinterested in Birtherism that she hasn’t bothered to learn the distinction between the long-form certificate and the COLB. Based on what she told Fox last week, I think it’s the latter. It sounds like she’s willing to play ball when asked about this, since some people take it seriously enough to keep posing the question, but she’d obviously rather talk about ObamaCare and the debt crisis. So she gives the constitutional answer — yes, let’s all check the natural-born box by producing our birth certificates — but she’s not so invested in the issue as to be a stickler about which “certificates” qualify. A mild surprise given her status as a hero of the base, which is where most Birthers seem to reside, but also proof that she’d rather focus on fiscal issues than question The One’s legitimacy.

Bachmann understands long form birth certificates as well as she understands the American Revolution and the shot heard around the world.

She reminds me of a boss, artist or some other celebrity that surrounds themselves only with people who tell them what they want to hear. just sticking to her talking points, and being rather oblivious.

She says it was a birth record, not a birth certificate and the Hawaiian governor said he could find a birth certificate at all.

Clear as mud.

To me it’s not about where he was born, more an issue like releasing your tax returns, or your college transcripts. Except this is such an innocuous request — release the detailed records of his birth.

Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and a bunch of other states are considering bills that will end this fight one way or another, by requiring long form birth certificates for ballot access.

Barry Soetoro dodged a bullet with Arizona’s Brewer vetoing their bill, but other states are made of sterner stuff – and it will only take ONE state to pass the law. Then Barry’s jig is up.

This is Exhibit A of the important work Trump has been doing. Bachmann is absolutely clueless about the distiction between a “certificate” and a “certification”, but TRUMP keeps explaining the difference on every show and interview he does. Bachmann should take some time out of her day and actually LISTEN to Trump (or the many blogs or WND) to familiarize herself on this issue before she embarrasses herself again and turns a significant part of the electorate off (51%).

FINAL REPORT:

The Daily Pen’s, Dan Crosby, engaged a two month long research project on location in Hawaii, to, once and for all, close the door on questions about the facts and bring the long-due invalidation of the authority of these fallow Hawaiian birth announcements, in quaint, remote newspapers, to confirm Obama’s eligibility to be president.

Recall, for more than two years, major media personalities, such as Bill O’reilly, Chris Matthews and recently fired, Keith Olbermann have enjoyed a willful ignorance in support of Obama’s legitimacy while poking fun with these announcements essentially saying to their viewers that the very presence of these announcements means only one of two exclusive options: 1. They are a legitimate and accurate indication of Obama’s geographic birth in Hawaii, or 2. They are the result of some crazy 50-year-long conspiracy concocted by members of Obama’s family and newspaper editors at the time in order to enable Obama to use the announcements some time later as primary evidence that he was born in Hawaii in the event he might run for president some day.

In his investigation, Crosby found confirmed and easily accessible evidence that neither of these choices apply to Obama’s records. In fact, the explanation is far less sensational and simple that it reveals that Mr. Obama (Barry Soetoro) simply benefitted from a commonly used administrative practice in the state of Hawaii which was applied for literally thousands of births which were registered there, but which did not occur there. In doing so, Obama appears to have benefitted from a coincidental set of passive circumstances in which the choice to register his birth in Hawaii also allowed him to engage native U.S. citizenship status, not Natural Born status.

fossten on April 20, 2011 at 8:33 PM

Bachmann has always been about Obamacare and the issues.
The birth cert is a distraction from the real issues.

But I like how Trump is digging it in.
Bachmann, like Palin has gone after Obama on the issues, I would say both to a degree have made outstanding arguments.

Er…no offense, but I think you’ve demonstrated you’re not acquainted with the nuts and bolts of the issue.

1) The document Stephanopoulos presented is a “certified copy” of his original birth certificate. It’s not the “same thing” in that it’s a different piece of paper and it has a different heading, but it’s identical for all conceivable legal purposes and it’s perfectly accurate to call it a “birth certificate.”

2) Obama can’t request the original copy of his birth certificate, because Hawaii no longer releases it, or exact copies of it. See here.

Although original birth certificates (Certificates of Live Birth) are preferred for their greater detail, the State Department of Health (DOH) no longer issues Certificates of Live Birth. When a request is made for a copy of a birth certificate, the DOH issues a Certification of Live Birth.

You men are good guys, but you do not know all that you think you know. You have been deceived and you have deceived yourselves.

I’ll point out that self-deception was at the root of Eve’s sin in the Garden. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. Eve saw that it was good when it obviously was not. Rather than standing on God’s word, she trusted what she thought she saw. She was self-deceived–and most since have been as well.

It would be far and away better to say nothing at all than to cover for Obama.

If you compare Trumps’s willingness to speak his mind and meet the left head on versus this wimp’s weasling her way out of any confrontation, it’s no wonder Trump is climbing in the polls. It’s not so much your conservative credentials as your willingness to fight for them and your base. I’m really disappointed in Bachmann. She should have told Steph that he’s not holding a birth certificate and that anyone can get one of those Certifications if their parents merely live in Hawaii. She might have mentioned that Obama’s sister has one from Hawaii and she was born in Indonesia. There are a whole range of data points and issues she could have gone toe to toe with him on but in the end, she wanted badly to just sweep it under the rug just the rest of the establishment right and left.

Obama isn’t scared about his place of birth, or that his BC says he’s a Muslim, or that it says that he’s a Kenyan at his father’s designation (which can be overridden by Oama himself upon majority). She raised more money than any of her presidential rivals in 2011’s first quarter, her presence at political events regularly swells crowds, and she’s running surprisingly strongly in early 2012 polling, despite relatively low name recognition.

Bachmann is now mainstream. All she needed was for the Donald to pull the argument and all the oxygen to the right and she can waltz in there.

It’s not the “same thing” in that it’s a different piece of paper and it has a different heading, but it’s identical for all conceivable legal purposes and it’s perfectly accurate to call it a “birth certificate.”

It’s not even legal to use a Certification in Hawaii to prove you were born there. For example, native Hawaiians can’t use the COLB to make claims of nativity. They have to produce an actual birth certificate. Apparently, they have been able to get one even if Obama can’t. And as anyone who’s studied the matter knows, when Obama was born, you didn’t have to be born in Hawaii to get a Certification of Live Birth. All that had to be done is for a resident of Hawaii to show up at the records office and claim you have a new baby and provided you can show proof of Hawaii residency, you’ll get a COLB. That’s how Obama’s sister, who was born in Indonesia, got one.

2) Obama can’t request the original copy of his birth certificate, because Hawaii no longer releases it, or exact copies of it. See here.

So, for some reason you can’t get a copy of your own birth certificate in Hawaii? When did this start? And can someone tell me how it is the president of the United States can’t access his own birth certificate to settle a legal dispute?

Yes, some officials have said there’s proof that Obama was born in Hawaii but none have said they have actually seen it. They might have been told it’s there, or they might have decided that the cost in societal instability of finding out the president is a liar would outweigh the truth. Or they might be a Republican and decide that they would rather not run again as the person who tried to bring Obama down on a technicality such as no birth certificate. Tearing down Hawaii’s favorite son would hardly be conducive to electoral success.

In the end, THERE HAS BEEN NO LEGAL DOCUMENT DISPLAYED TO THE PUBLIC SHOWING WHERE OBAMA WAS BORN. PERIOD.

Nope. I’m doing something a friend. ;) It’s studio.

Gotcha… ;)

JetBoy on April 20, 2011 at 8:50 PM

She says it was a birth record, not a birth certificate and the Hawaiian governor said he could find a birth certificate at all.

Clear as mud.

Sorry……..Bachmann is great on the Fiscal issues but she’s shooting for the VP spot if she runs. She knows since the GOP Leadership told her to take a hike that she’s going to get nowhere further up in the House so she’s looking for a new gig.

If women in general don’t like Palin because they are jealous, etc. then Bachmann with 400 children and her looks isn’t going to win any gal votes either.

I hope they all run……..let them (GOP) fight it out and may the one with the steel cajones win the nomination.

We must defeat President Palpatine.

Seriously? You’re comparing Birtherism to THE FALL OF MAN?

I’ve seen it all now.

MikeknaJ on April 20, 2011 at 8:41 PM

Absolutely not. I clearly used it as a reference for self-deception. We must all guard against self-deception. Self-deception is the most common malady of all men in every era. “ There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.

Perhaps an even better verse for this situation: Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Stayright on April 20, 2011 at 8:52 PM

Please just go away.

crr6 on April 20, 2011 at 8:43 PM

We’d rather you leave. Anyone want to take a poll on that?

The short-form is THE LEGAL DOCUMENT from the state of Hawaii.

End. Of. Story.

JetBoy on April 20, 2011 at 8:44 PM

If that’s enough for you, that’s great. If that’s enough for the state of Hawaii, great. (Although I think O’s got cronies in the dept of vital records and chiyome fukino is a da*ned liar). That doesn’t mean it has to be enough for the US Constitution.

Obama didn’t need to release the long form because Nancy Pelosi, the Chair of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, lied for him when preparing the Certificate of Nomination for the 50 states.

Dwight Eisenhower released his long form, even though everybody knew he was an American who crushed the Axis powers in Europe in World War II. And yet this lying, Indonesian quota hire gets a pass? I don’t think so.

People were able to get long-form certificates as recently as this March, although not since this April. It’s a recent policy change, not enacted legislation, and as such can be changed by the next department administrator.

alwaysfiredup on April 20, 2011 at 8:53 PM

At least she reads Iowahawk. Or watches Firewall.

AshleyTKing on April 20, 2011 at 8:54 PM

The short-form is THE LEGAL DOCUMENT from the state of Hawaii.

But not for the Hawaiian “Homelands” program. And it’s not a legal document for Article II, Section 1, Clause 5.

Emperor Norton on April 20, 2011 at 8:48 PM

I’ll note this his attorneys did not enter it into evidence a single time. A judge did take judicial notice of the online posting at least once. I don’t know if that was at the urging of Obama’s attorneys or not.

Stayright on April 20, 2011 at 8:54 PM

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’

sharrukin on April 20, 2011 at 8:56 PM

So, for some reason you can’t get a copy of your own birth certificate in Hawaii?

Well you can get a hold of a certified copy (like the one Obama released). Ironically, Arizona also only releases “short-form” certified copies now as well.

When did this start?

For Hawaii I think it was around 2001. I’m not sure when Arizona started only releasing short-forms, but I think it was around the same time.

And can someone tell me how it is the president of the United States can’t access his own birth certificate to settle a legal dispute?

Well he doesn’t need to. The certified copy is of equal legal force.

Yes, some officials have said there’s proof that Obama was born in Hawaii but none have said they have actually seen it.

False.

In the end, THERE HAS BEEN NO LEGAL DOCUMENT DISPLAYED TO THE PUBLIC SHOWING WHERE OBAMA WAS BORN. PERIOD.

NNtrancer on April 20, 2011 at 8:49 PM

That’s also false. The certified copy he’s provided says he was born in Hawaii.
