House Dem: I want to support Obama but he needs to fix immigration first

posted at 9:03 pm on April 19, 2011 by Allahpundit

Remember Luis Gutierrez? Sure you do. Quote: “I have only one loyalty and that’s to the immigrant community.” Frustrated by the lack of movement on amnesty in Congress, he’s been threatening some sort of schism between Latinos and Democrats for months. On the one hand, that’s a savvy move insofar as it recognizes that The One values nothing so much as his own reelection. (That’s the shining lesson from the deficit-reduction battle, after all.) But realistically, Democrats aren’t going to pass any immigration bills before 2013: It’s too dicey for centrist Dems like Tester and Nelson who are up for reelection, especially with unemployment still sky high. The smart play for Gutierrez would be to pressure Republicans with warnings that they’ll be wiped out by the Latino vote next year if they don’t compromise on immigration; that strategy would dovetail with the Dems wanting to use the issue as a wedge with the GOP, to remind Latinos that the same evil people who want America’s grandmas to go without medical care are also the exclusive impediment to open borders. Instead, Gutierrez is sabotaging that plan, laying the blame exclusively at Obama’s feet. Mystifying. Although not as mystifying as this:

According to the Chicago Tribune, the lawmaker told a large crowd at Lincoln United Methodist Church in Chicago that Obama should use his executive powers to stop the deportation of people with children who are U.S. citizens.

“I have nothing but the greatest desire to vote for Barack Obama. I have nothing but the greatest desire to be helpful, and to join arms with him, and march across this country toward his reelection,” Gutierrez said in Chicago. “But I cannot do that. We cannot do that, until we resolve the current conflict that exists between this administration and its immigration policy.”
Gutierrez said Latino voters are dissatisfied with Obama’s progress on the issue. He’s concerned it will mean smaller voter turnout in 2012, according to the published report.

Mark Krikorian says that would be an impeachable offense, but I’m less concerned than I am amused by the idea that The One would tempt fate with independents by unilaterally ordering some sort of mass amnesty. I fear poor Gutierrez has set himself up for heart-ache yet again.

Even so, attention must be paid, so Obama threw him a bone today by doing what he does best: He called a meeting to talk about it. Ho hum.

Immigration
==============
The United States is a proud nation of immigrants. Like the generations who came before, the most recent newcomers want what all Americans want: to raise strong families, build safe communities, to practice their faith in freedom and to seek new and better opportunities for their children.

Obama to hold meeting on immigration reform
Posted: Apr 18, 2011 9:25 PM EDT
Updated: Apr 19, 2011 10:26 AM EDT
********************************************

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama has marshaled the likes of former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the mayors of New York and San Antonio and Philadelphia’s police commissioner in an attempt to show wide and varied support for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws.

The invitees are among a bipartisan group expected to meet with Obama at the White House on Tuesday afternoon to discuss revamping the immigration system.

Besides Schwarzenegger, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, who also served as Washington, D.C., police chief, are among those invited.

In a statement issued late Monday, the White House said the president is holding the meeting to discuss the importance of fixing the nation’s “broken immigration system” to meet the country’s 21st century economic and national security needs.

The White House said business and religious leaders, as well as current and former public officials from across the political spectrum were to be invited. The statement was attributed to a White House senior official who was not further identified.

In a Monday afternoon interview with Dallas television station WFAA, Obama underscored the need for bilateral support to set new immigration policy.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“The question is going to be, are we going to be able to find some Republicans who can partner with me and others to get this done once and for all instead of using it as a political football,” he said.

President Talks with CEOs on Immigration; Activists Ask for Action
on April 19, 2011
********************

*(Notice the W.H.logo)

President Obama today met with stakeholders to discuss a way forward on immigration reform. Getting the President’s time on immigration is great, especially when so many other pressing issues are competing for his attention. We’re glad the long overdue meeting happened. However, critical voices were absent from this meeting, voices that echo the experience of so many immigrants who make up our community and are directly impacted by our broken immigration laws.

We need immigrants!
But let’s face it folks, there are at least two kinds of immigrants; the ones who are running away from something and the ones who are running toward something. The former group come to The United States for shelter and refuge from oppression and poverty and a whole catalog of horrors and spend their time with us pining away for the old country and trying everything they can to get back. The latter group don’t come to the United States at all, they come to America. They come to be free, and they come to add their hope and their dream to ours and to make something altogether miraculous.
Without that second group, the freedom seekers, America dies because the people who were born here of many generations have no idea what freedom means. More importantly, they have no idea what tyranny means. Most of all, they have no idea what America means!
Ask the Cambodians from Pol Pot’s killing fields. Ask the Hmong from Ho Chi Minh’s Vietnam! They know more about America and what it really means to all of humanity, than the rest of us could ever dream. These are the immigrants we need!

Hope some one points out to Dopey at the meeting that the millions of illegals here have a direct effect on the IRS’ revenue-ing, sapping our resources in more ways than one.

J_Crater on April 19, 2011 at 10:07 PM

Gutierrez is bluffing. Where is he going to go. Are the political, Democrat Hispanics going to throw their support to Sarah Palin? Of course not. The problem is that Hispanics are not like blacks and they are much more politically astute than blacks. Blacks have painted themselves into a corner, blindly supporting the Democratic Party. Hispanics know this and they aren’t going to allow themselves to be treated the same way by the Democrats.

Obama can’t get immigration done, he no longer has the political capital. Hispanics are going to see this as another bone they got, just for a vote, and not the whole bill they really want.

If, oh God Republicans are soooooooooooooooooooooo stupid, the Republicans were really good, they could propose a “rational” immigration reform bill, which would deal with the border, deal with existing immigrants, and put into place a real plan to deal with immigration. They could put it together, watch as the Senate guts it and then point out to Hispanics that the Democrats would rather have the issue, rather than a solution. Alas, Republicans have the political savvy of an egret.

GOP official apologizes for Obama ‘chimp email’
9:10 AM on 04/19/2011
***********************

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California GOP official who sent out an e-mail picturing President Barack Obama’s face on the body of a baby chimpanzee issued an apology late Monday after a weekend of criticism that ended with a strongly worded public rebuke from the local Republican Party chairman, who also called for an ethics investigation into the incident.

Marilyn Davenport, a 74-year-old Fullerton resident and elected member of the Orange County Republican Central Committee, sent an email Monday afternoon asking for forgiveness for her “unwise behavior,” just before the GOP committee met for its monthly summit at a hotel in Irvine, where the fallout from the incident was the hot topic.

In a statement issued late Monday, the White House said the president is holding the meeting to discuss the importance of fixing the nation’s “broken immigration system” to meet the country’s 21st century economic and national security needs.

Yes, because nothing will do more to improve our economic and national security needs than giving amnesty to millions of unskilled, undereducated, non English-speaking illegal aliens, many of whom are criminals using false identity documents.

We’ve already got nearly 20% un- or under-employment, and 45 million Americans on foodstamps — but that’s not enough, right Barry?
