Quotes of the day

posted at 9:00 pm on April 16, 2011 by Allahpundit

“‘We didn’t elect you just to rearrange the deck chairs on a sinking Titanic,’ Palin said during a rally in front of the Wisconsin statehouse in Madison. ‘What we need from you, GOP, is to fight.’ Pointing to the national champion University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team, Palin said the GOP could learn from its resolve and ‘needs to learn how to fight like a girl.’

“Palin took issue with the GOP leadership for promising $100 billion in cuts from the current budget, trimming that pledge to $60 billion and finally settling for $38 billion in the recent budget battle.

“‘Then after some politics as usual and accounting gimmicks we found out — ya know that $38 billion? We’re actually borrowing that $38 billion,’ Palin said. ‘That is not courage, that is capitulation.’”

***
“‘When the history of the Tea Party is written, what you accomplished here will not be forgotten. And the 2012 election begins here,’ she affirmed.

“To drive the point home, Palin recalled the Green Bay Packers’ 2011 Super Bowl win, saying, ‘What better place to call out the liberal left and let them know, Mr. President, game on!‘”

***
“In the last few months, political professionals and insiders have been writing off the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate, convinced she won’t run for the GOP nomination in 2012 or ever. Then again, even those GOPers who are running can hardly compete with the MSM’s weird, all-consuming fascination with The Donald.

“But all it took was one powerful, pugnacious and presidential speech — just 15 minutes long — for Palin to again make herself completely relevant to the current political and policy battles raging across America…

“That line about fighting like a girl, as well as her ‘Game on!’ declaration will surely reignite speculation about presidential plans. And understandably so. Frontrunner Mitt Romney continues to fashion and refashion a saleable explanation for his Obamacare-esque Massachusetts health plan. And while Tim Pawlenty scored a coup with the hiring of hotshot campaign manager Nick Ayers, his embryonic candidacy is still a work in progress. There’s enough voter unease that another Mitch Daniels boomlet seems to be in progress.”

The man who did his darnest to torpedo CO’D AFTER she won the DE R Primary in 3 days worth of interviews? All the while NOT revealing that he had approached the CO’D camp on Castle’s behalf and asked her not to run but failed — repeatedly — to make clear his role as a supporter of Castle???…The Rove that is supposed to be so politically smart that for 3 days in a row he loudtalked a Republican Primary winner even though he knew doing so could/would be detrimental to her campaign? It appears that Rove has chosen to represent a segment of the R party over the Party as a whole…

Have you seen that speech she gave to that right to life group in Iowa in 2009? She talked about Trig and she choked up then too. I love that about her. We have a very close friend of the family who has Down syndrome. I adore her. She’s 57! I would love for Sarah to meet her someday. I think she would be very heartened by the experience. Hopefully she swings by this way during her campaign. ;o)

Dire,

A good GOP person doesn’t loudtalk the winner of a Republican Primary on national TV for 3 straight days, rather he finds ways to promote the primary winner. Just as other good GOP persons don’t vote for a dem in a POTUS race or tell someone to “leave the room” or etc., etc., etc….

Now, a member of the GOP who fails to offer a disclaimer of their advocacy on behalf of another candidate may. Or another member of the GOP who may have a bias based on sex, region, education, speaking voice or any other non-substantive reason can…

I think she’ll officially announce within the next month or so. She unofficially announced today I think…so we knew what she was planning without having to worry about the legal connotations to officially announcing.

The speech was one of her best…tied with her Anaheim speech I think. My favorite moment was unscripted. It came at the end after her war cry GAME ON!

She turned to face the crowd behind her and shake hands…and a gentleman in an orange shirt took her hand and kissed it. It was so sweet!

But once she won the primary Rove should have backed off and didn’t. If he’s such a Party man then that sounds like a legitimate gripe for the O’Donnell supporters.

Gohawgs on April 17, 2011 at 4:24 AM

Finally, it was President Barack Obama’s turn. She defended, to great cheering, Wisconsin’s own Paul Ryan from the president’s blindside attack on his bold budget plan. Palin contrasted it with Obama’s 2009 stimulus plan, describing it as a “trillion-dollar travesty.” She mocked his latest economic proposals as naive bets on “really fast trains and solar shingles.” The clincher: “Our president isn’t leading; he’s punting on this debt crisis. Win the future? The only future he wants to win is his re-election.”

Speaking of “Quotes of the Day.” These are just too good to skip over.

Hey OC, I hope your back pain gets some relief soon. My 87 year old mom had back surgery a few years ago to remove a bone spur in her spine that was messing with her spinal cord. Some of that pain came back but they won’t operate now, as she has congestive heart failure and is not a good candidate for the anesthetic. So she was referred to a pain clinic. They give her some shots that give her some relief for a few weeks at a time. They also prescribed some pain pills that actually make her quite loopy. It is kind of funny watching my tee totalling mom actually get high from these things. Good thing she lives with me so I can keep an eye on her. But her pain is now down to a manageable level. When it warms up, she will go over to the condo pool and do some of her water exercises. That also helps. But since it flipping snowed today, it will be a while before they remove that pool cover.

Thanks Ed M for sending your snow our way!!!!

I notice in many of the MSM photos of Sarah during her speech, the face of the guy in the orange shirt (holding one end the AFP banner) is cropped out, making the picture twice as wide as it is high. Now why might they do that?

If she wanted to have a say in that debate maybe she should have run for the Senate when Alaska needed a new Senator..then she could have actually been involved in the process.. The truth is this is just another example of Republicans yelling at each other rather than doing anything meaningful to oppose the Democrats.

I understand the frustration and that is why I support big cuts like the kind Paul Ryan is talking about…but this budget that Palin is talking about was the budget that the Democrats were supposed to have done before the GOP even took over, most of the spending was not even on the table and the Democratic Senate and the Democratic President were not going to go along with the demands of Sarah Palin..they could care less what she says.

If they had just shut down the government, they would only have been faced with the same fight later after they had managed to piss off the whole damn country. It would not have balanced the budget or cut spending. The GOP she is complaining about are the ones who have to do the job of making these cuts..giving speeches is much easier.

So yes, I think she is right when she says they need to fight, but they also need to be smart in that fight and wage it in a way that might actually accomplish something real.

Demagoguery from both sides is probably the greatest threat to real spending cuts and deficit reduction.

What worked for my back is doing stretching exercises.
All over body stretching. I found this woman, Miranda
Esmonde (she got married – think her name might now be
Esmonde-White) who has a stretching program both on TV
and on DVD called “Classical Stretch”. At first I couldn’t
perform all the moves, if you will; over time I got much
better at it. It was like a miracle. If someone told me my
back problems would pretty much go away after doing these
stretching exercises I would have laughed. It really worked for me. Hopefully it will help someone else.

The GOP are suffering from so much atrophy in their party…it’s going to take a 3rd candidate running to the Right of them as an Independent to get a strong person in the White House.

Unless the GOP handed the MSM a list of milk toast candidates on purpose, to give them something to salivate over…you know the Republican bench is thin and they always choose who’s turn it is next to run. That’s the narrative in the MSM. A ruse’?

If Karl Rove doesn’t have something up his sleeve the Republicans are in trouble. I am an Independent, I would vote for Palin, and I wouldn’t ever vote for Romney. If the Republicans can’t figure out that they need something more than a card board cut out of a Presidential contender or a bland field of contenders. They better hope there is a strong Independent candidate that runs that can beat Obama. When Donald Trump can come out of Right Field and schooled everyone on what a Republican candidate should sound like, and none of them can duplicate the formula well….Maybe it’s time to let some Hockey Moms move to the front of the line.

I found this article this morning, http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-gop-donors-20110409,0,7472271.story which supports my earlier anecdote.
I thought the line about the donor in Florida wanting to really believe in someone before commiting very telling especially in light of Palin’s fire in the belly.

“Fight like a girl.” that’s very violent imagery. She will have blood on her hands if someone gets hurt. /sarc/

vcferlita on April 17, 2011 at 9:11 AM

I just love that she showed up at the scene where progrssivism was defeated. They pulled out all the stops and lost.

Agreed and I don’t recall anyone that commented on Prosser’s victory remembering that in the final days of his campaign she endorsed him when everyone thought the Union would insure a Kloppenberg victory.

Mitt Romney 2012.

He sucks on Taxes, He sucks on Heath Care, he sucks on Government spending !

But hey he Might Just WIN !

William Amos on April 17, 2011 at 8:56 AM

So, we would trade the full sprint toward statism for the G.W. shuffle again? No thanks. Why can’t we go in a different direction, like towards freedom?

SKYFOX on April 17, 2011 at 9:13 AM

Mitt Romney 2012.

He isnt conservative. He doesnt fight for what he believes in. He wont stand with us. But he is better than Obama !

Mitt Romney the lesser of two evils !

William Amos on April 17, 2011 at 9:36 AM

Rove?..He has all ready won TWO elections leading Team Dubyah!..If the Palinistas want to discount him..go ahead!..:)

Dire Straits on April 17, 2011 at 1:23 AM

Rove also was planning a “permanent republican majority”.. How did that turn out?

DaveC on April 17, 2011 at 9:41 AM

While I agree they are..Do not forget Rove knows politics ..:)

Dire Straits on April 17, 2011 at 1:28 AM

Rove knows “politics as usual”.

Amjean on April 17, 2011 at 9:46 AM

Professor Jacobson gets it.

In one sentence, Palin did more to advance the cause of women in politics than all the Women’s Studies Ph.D’s in all the universities in this country combined.

NoNails on April 17, 2011 at 9:54 AM

That line almost drew a tear…
-
I know my mother fought like a girl (the whole time she raised 4 kids without a man around and without a public assitance anything). I know my daughter is fighting like a girl raising her 5 kids in this currently hard on large families world…
-
Sarah stood out in that snowfall, cold as hell I’m sure… and she showed a strong determined nature that was the basis of the building of America… She is NOT your siisy a** typical politician…
-
And with the mouthy ‘death threats’ crowd surronding her and her supporters… she called them out. Beautiful.

The other night I overheard a guy saying that some bigwig donors he knew were considering supporting Romney, but before they commited money they wanted him to address his mistake with RomneyCare. If not, forget it. Good timing on this rally speech if you ask me. People are yearning for a leader to get us out of this mess. Show them the way Sarah.

txmomof6 on April 17, 2011 at 8:09 AM

I read that many “bigwig” donors were holding back, waiting
to see if Palin announces. I also read that the scuttlebutt
is that the Koch Brothers will back Palin. They back
the Tea Party that put on the rally in Madison yesterday
to the tune of millions (Americans for Prosperity is the
name of the Tea Party I think). Look them up. WOW!
Two conservative brothers who are billionaires. They own
timber mills, building products companies, paper products, etc. They could certainly help raise a lot of money for
her campaign. Obama said he is raising a billion. Whoever
runs, and I hope it is Palin, needs a big war chest.

Gohawgs on April 17, 2011 at 3:54 AM

Yep. I used to like Rove, but his actions in the last two years are largely unconscionable and have rendered him wholly untrustworthy.

Honestly, do we need someone who historically was a brilliant politician for our side but now can be counted on to be a vocal opponent of our side, to whom the media will happily give unrestricted airtime as he makes it harder to get our candidate(s) elected? Why would we not shun this person?

It’s like our campaign bus is broken down and we’re pushing it uphill to continue forward – instead of helping push, Rove chooses to stand over to the side with the media, whining, carping, pointing out how much better this would’ve been if everyone was wearing the kind of shoe he prefers, complaining about the color of their shirts and their haircuts, etc – hey Rove, how about you just come alongside the rest of us, lend a hand, and push.

But wait – he’s not just standing aside doing nothing – he’s actually trying to ride on top of the bus, drawing attention to himself and making the pushing harder. Oh hell, now he’s gotten in *front* of the bus, and is pushing back to make it even *harder*.

F@#$ Rove.

Midas on April 17, 2011 at 10:00 AM

My take.

Gohawgs on April 17, 2011 at 3:54 AM

I totally agree with this. Karl Rove is very interesting and has much to tell about the inside workings of campaigns. As long as you don’t forget that he’s a fired gun and his loyalties lie with a wallet, he’s still interesting.

Cindy Munford on April 17, 2011 at 10:17 AM

Just listened to it again. As she talked about the social contract and that it’s most important part is that we are governed only because we give people consent to govern over us. That among other things she said make me realize most of those in DC are experts in politics, Palin is an expert in government. The two are vastly different, but almost always thought of as interchangeable.

She playing like Reagan – rather then just telling people what they want to hear, she is teaching people how things work so they will want the right things.

It was done to perfection when she told union workers how Walker was actually saving their pensions and jobs, and how she eviscerated the Democrats talking points about killing the elderly, and not caring about the poor. She you don’t just give willy nilly – you prioritize using wisdom and prudence in the confines of a budget and those who need the help get the help.
