Video: Maybe those air-traffic controllers wouldn’t be falling asleep if Reagan hadn’t busted the union

posted at 9:14 pm on April 14, 2011 by Allahpundit

Makes sense. That’s what unions are known for, after all: Enforcing rigorous performance standards among their members and ruthlessly disciplining those who fall down on the job. Why, I bet PATCO would have forced those goldbrickers to resign in shame before the FAA even got around to firing them.

Maybe those air-traffic controllers wouldn’t be falling asleep if Reagan hadn’t busted the union.

Using the same logic that gave us this statement above…..

jake-the-goose on April 14, 2011 at 9:20 PM

What an idiot. They weren’t sleeping because they were overworked, they simply felt that they had landed a gig where not much was expected of them. Union membership would have made it worse, if at all possible.

Reagan fired them in 1981, thirty years ago this year. The law requires mandatory retirement at age 56. Just how many Reagan fired would still be on the job?

Her lame point was that the caliber of today’s air traffic controller is due to the fact that President Reagan broke the union 30 years ago.

“Maybe those air-traffic controllers wouldn’t be falling asleep if Reagan hadn’t busted the union”

Reagan told the air-traffic controllers that if they did strike, which would have effectively shut down domestic and internetional air traffic, he would fire them. Were they the least bit surprised? I love a leader that says what he means and means what he says! I guess Joy can’t handle the truth.

The unions were busted because they were endangering the nation by illegally going on strike. That’s why they were busted.

So the logic here is that had they not been busted they would be responsible, law-abiding, hard-working people?

That makes less than no sense.

…….it’s not really Reagan’s fault.

It’s actually the Government of Ireland’s fault.

You see the Irish gov’t and their economic actions caused the Reagan family to immigrate to America. So since they were in Illinois in 1911 they birthed Ronald and the rest is history.

Speaking of WI:

H/T to Gateway Pundit:

They’re still counting votes in Milwaukee for the Wisconsin supreme court justice race that was held last week. The rest of the state has turned in their totals – Not Milwaukee. And, as you well know, as long as they are still counting ballots, democrats are still trying to steal the race. Justice Prosser currently leads the race by over 7,000 votes. (Fairly Conservative)

Mike in Chicago sent in the latest news on the race:

First, it was VERY nice meeting you and chatting with you at the SAMMIES in Chicago last Friday. I very much enjoyed our conversation.

I was just listening to Charlie Sykes, and he broke this story about Milwaukee Election Commissioner Robert Spindell the only GOP member.

Due to the intensity of the Supreme Court election, he called the Milwaukee police to come and guard the Milwaukee County ballots (a Democrat stronghold) to prevent any funny business.

When the rest of the commissioners found out about this, they told the police to stand down.

Luckily, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clark (Republican) understanding the importance of ballot integrity sent his men in to protect the ballots.

Can you imagine if we had the opportunity to stop liberals in their tracks and force them to explain every single outrageously stupid statement like this from first principles? I think we’d find that 99.9% of the crap they spew has absolutely no thought behind it whatsoever. Liberals only have one axiomatic premise: “Every thought I have is correct.” Because of this, they see no need to filter anything that pops into their head, and unfortunately the result is that America is being eaten alive by this cancerous stupidity.

I posted this at another website, but it fits here also.
I hate [actually I love] being the bearer of bad news for the enlightened duo of Behar and Goldberg but the Air Traffic Controllers have a union. The NATCA natca.org/about.aspx?zone=About NATCA&pID=278#p278 —- Certified in 1987, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association is one of the strongest and most influential labor unions in the federal sector. Affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFLCIO), NATCA represents over 20,000 safety- related professionals including Air Traffic Controllers, Engineers, Traffic Management Coordinators and Staff Specialists. ——- NATCA represents a variety of bargaining units, from Air Traffic Control to Engineers and Architects. These bargaining units consist of members split up over 10 different regions, nine of which correspond to the geographic boundaries set by the FAA and deal primarily with air traffic related personnel. The regions are broken up as such: Alaska, Central, Eastern, Great Lakes, New England, Northwest Mountain, Southern, Southwest, Western Pacific, and Region X. Region X, unlike the others, is nationwide in scope and encompasses the union’s other represented bargaining units such as Engineers and Architects, Aerospace Medicine and more.

free on April 15, 2011 at 12:29 AM

As a working Air Traffic Controller I can offer a few bits of information on this topic.

1. The FAA allows for a work schedule that requires ONLY 8 hours between shifts. You can work until 10 PM and start again the next morning at 6 AM.

2. Most FAA facilities post a “rattler” schedule whereas your first 2 shifts are afternoon shifts (2PM – 10PM), your next two are mornings (6AM – 2PM) and your last shift is a night shift (10PM – 6AM).

The reason they do this is allow for a longer weekend. You start at 2 or 3PM on your first day back and you’re off by 6AM on your last day of work.

The 2 quick turns (8 hours between shifts) is where the problem is. If you have an hour commute each way to work you are already down to 6 hours to rest, do any home duties and get ready for work again.

Regardless of all these above issues, personal responsiblity is still paramount.

FAA Administrator, Randy Babbitt is the ex-ALPA (pilots Union) head. He should mandate controller rest periods to be at least equal to pilot rest requirements which are much, much more safety-oriented.

JetBlast on April 15, 2011 at 1:59 AM

Don’t like Ms Behar for all the above reasons, BUT this time she has a point. Can’t say I know anything about being an ATC but I do drive truck all night and know something about “WHITE LINE FEVER”, that’s when the envirnonment becomes a monitious drone, you fall a sleep and don’t even feel it coming. Makes no differense if you had 8hr sleep two cups of coffee and a cold shower. It hit’s you “snap” just like that. In the absents of a union it’s the “BEAN COUNTER” in charge.

Some one should ask “did they cut costs to far”??, was that why the head resigned befor the investigation?? That the point I think Ms Behar was trying to make.
