Obama and Beck agree: Birtherism not such a smart strategy for GOP next year

posted at 7:17 pm on April 14, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via the Blaze, confirmation at last that common ground does indeed exist between GB and The One. Just across from ABC:

“I think that over the last two and a half years there’s been an effort to go at me in a way that is politically expedient in the short-term for Republicans. But [it] creates, I think a problem for them when they want to actually run in a general election where most people feel pretty confident the President was born where he says he was, in Hawaii. He– he doesn’t have horns…we’re not really worrying about conspiracy theories or– or birth certificates,” President Obama told me…

“The truth of the matter is that I think that the vast majority of Americans across the country – Democratic or Republican – really want this election to be about growing the economy, getting control of the deficit, preparing the future for our kids. And my suspicion is that anybody who is not addressing those questions…Is going to be in trouble. I think they may get a quick pop in the news. They may get a lot of attention. But ultimately, the American people understand this is a serious, sober time,” he told me.

Beck’s point exactly, although the left will end up having a lotttt of fun with the idea of him suddenly trying to talk people out of a nefarious connect-the-dots Obama conspiracy. In any case, he’s wasting his breath: The hardcore Birthers won’t end the crusade over something as petty as a presidential election and the less hardcore are, I think, enjoying Trump’s Sheen-esque defiance of media political correctness too much right now to abandon him for reasons of expedience. The real fault line here is between people like Beck, who think this issue is a disaster in the making, and other non-Birther Obama opponents like Rush Limbaugh, who see Trump’s confrontationalism as a “blueprint” on how to beat The One. (“You just go right after him, instead of pussyfooting around, worrying about what the independents are gonna say or worried about what the people that pay attention to politics two days a year are gonna say, just go after it.”) Beck’s going to win that argument eventually, but the longer it takes for the campaign to get rolling, the longer it’ll take for Birthermania to fade. Oh well.

I second what Rush said. Go straight at him and don’t let up. Kick him in the teeth and make him defend himself. He’s not smart enough to make it through that without flubbing a few times. Poke enough holes in his story and his balloon ride comes crashing down.

Trump is a an Obama stalking horse. He’s using birtherism to gain a following on the right, so that when he runs as an indie he will pull more votes from the GOP candidate, and accomplish his goal of re-electing Obama.

It’s not a legitimate concern it is settled and it is a distraction from more pressing issues where Obama is genuinely vulnerable.

I think Trump could of had a chance to win if he would not of gotten involved in the birther stuff, and the attacks on Obama.

He will need Independents to win, and if he would of acted like a real candidate all along, he would of been taken serious, and he would of had a chance to win.

Yes, coming out of the gates as a birther give him instant backing, but that is not a winning strategy.

He can get the Independents back if he can say he send all his goons to fine the truth, and the truth is, they found nothing to prove Obama is not a citizen.

Look, I have my little fantasy that Obama is not a citizen, but come on, time to move on from that. We just need to stick to the issues, beat him on the issues, and if Trump would of done that, he maybe could of won.

WoosterOh on April 14, 2011 at 7:44 PM

And Allah’s tiresome tirade against people with legitimate concerns about TOTUS’s legitimacy continues….

Norwegian on April 14, 2011 at 7:26 PM

Because your concerns aren’t legitimate.

They’re because you’re either crazy (as most conspiracy theorists are), which I doubt, or more simply, you really, really, REALLY hate Obama, and need something to latch onto to justify that hatred and confirm your belief that he’s not legitimate as President. It’s the same reason why a lot of Dems flirted with the IDEA of 9/11 Trutherism and why people are still, even TODAY, bringing up that disgusting “Trig Trutherism!” nonsense.

And it’s unnecessary, because there is so much to hate about Obama, so very, very much, without coming within a thousand lightyears of the Birther garbage.

The glorious thing is, you actually CAN follow Rush’s strategy of hitting Obama hard. You just choose the THOUSAND or so issues that Obama’s dead, dead wrong on, and use those, rather than resorting to the conspiracy theories. I mean, my god, look at that farce of a budget proposal. If that alone doesn’t give you a dozen different lines of attack to use on him, I don’t know what. And those are actually what are going to persuade the moderates, indies and general non-partisans.

Actually, now that I think of it, if Palin’s plan is to let Trump beclown himself, to make him look like a lunatic and thus make herself look better in comparison, then it’s a fairly clever strategy.

I don’t remember many conservatives joining Clinton and the PUMA’s in their quest to find out where ‘Chicago Jesus’ was born.

Why so late to the ‘Birther’ game? Did you figure at the time that Obama would be better than Clinton?

Um. No. That would not be a “fact.” That would be your OPINION.

Please state it as such, because, regardless of what you think, that’s all it is.

Yes, I was here in 2008. I guess I don’t remember that high of a percentage of consevatives joining hands with the PUMA’s supporting the birther claims. Now the Michelle Obama ‘Whitey’ tape I remember, but I don’t remember a large number of conservatives concerned about the birth place of Barack Obama. Not even close to the number that are today. Why is that? Clinton was leading the charge back then.

I do remember how the shattered factions of the pathetic GOP primary field battled it out with each other everyday here at Hot Air. That was what I remember being the focus of Republicans and conservatives in 2008 and not whether Obama was born in the US. I know there were a few, but my point is where were all the one’s that are screeching today back in ’08 when it might have mattered.

That Arizona, soon to be followed by a bunch of other states, will now require full documentation for all presidential and vice presidential candidates – including long form birth certificates – pretty much obviates the need for republicans to talk about the issue.

Mock them all you want – “birthers” won, gullibles lost.

You don’t actually believe I’d be referring to anyone else do you?

Beck and 15 minutes? Well I know to pay no attention o anything you have to say as you are out of touch with reality, But they say reality is for people who can’t handle drugs.

Actually, the AZ bill (as passed by the Senate, at least) doesn’t require a long-form birth certificate.

Okay…

Well, our foreign policy is a joke, the economy is in shambles, and we’re going to decided to start going on and on about his B.C.?

blatantblue on April 14, 2011 at 8:31 PM

I don’t see any inconsistency here at all. Beck is pissed because all the hoo-ha about the birth certificate keeps people from focusing on the actual sinister things in Obama’s background that he has been trying to shine a light on.

That will be for the election committee to decide, if a long form is available, they’re not going to accept anything else.

Boo Hoo. Oh, how can I go on knowing some internet looney tune will pay “no attention o (sic) anything” I have to say. Can you get Glenn boy to cry for me – he is pretty good at that.

tommyboy on April 14, 2011 at 8:33 PM

No problem. The GOP is not using this as a line of attack. Trump is.

Well it’s not available. That’s sort of the point.

Read the law.

If it’s on file, it’s available. I read the law, and you can indeed get a certified copy of a long form birth certificate from Hawaii, even today.

Beck has used this issue to out his own paranoia.

He continues (and has for a while now) claimed that “Birthers” (which he spits out with disgust) are some sort of weird, Beck-blood-sucking creeps out to get Beck by embarrassing him or something such as that.

In Beck’s mind, “Birtherism” is all about Glenn Beck. Some very paranoid so-called “Republicans” on the internet perpetuate this same paranoia: “it’s a plot to embarrass Republicans.”

Somehow the Constutitional — entirely legitimate — questions about “Barack Hussein Obama” has been brought entirely back to mean, to Glenn Beck, “Glenn Beck”.

O’Reilly has a lot of this same strange self-centered paranoia, too, about the very same “plot” that is assumed to exist “out there” about “them” by this sub-human detritus they refer to as “Birthers.”

The ONLY thing that makes “Republicans” “look bad” is some of them ranting paranoid tales such as what Beck and O’Reilly have been ranting (though both of them claim to be Independents — O’Reilly in the last few weeks has blurted out he’s “among Republicans who…” but he’s repeated for years now that he’s Independent).

The questions are not “party” questions. They need to be asked and allowed to be asked as to who Obama is and what his questionable past if not identity are.

Asking those questions harms no one but RINOs who want Obama in office (my guess, though it could mean anything to them, just guessing) and the Left who want to keep Obama in office. And to those who may have been involved in election fraud in 2007/08 and thereafter.

You know, it is quite possible for many people to ask questions and think about issues in the multiples. Asking about one thing and considering one area of problems does not render some of us incapable of thinking about a myriad of other issues at the same time.

So in this, I also include Priebus (GOP head) who has of late taken to telling over 50% of the voters to ‘shut up about the birth certificate’…if Priebus is so talented, can’t he manage to incorporate these issues into a larger plan of winning?

Don’t recall that it had much to do with PUMA’s at all.

I do recall that it was forbidden to talk about on a lot of conservative websites and was attacked by the hosts when it was. Redstate has a blanket ban on anyone who raises the issue to this day.

sharrukin on April 14, 2011 at 8:41 PM

Beck’s ratings vs the other Fox News stars are damn good considering he got a lousy rerun slot compared to BOR and Hannity. Fox News would do better with two feeds, one each for East and West like some networks do. Right now Beck’s slots are not in primetime in any 48-state time zone.
