Video: Biden taking Obama’s deficit speech about as seriously as the rest of us

posted at 4:59 pm on April 13, 2011 by Allahpundit

It wasn’t a serious proposal, so why keep up the pretense by staying conscious? O did what he had to do for 2012 by checking the “Republicans hate grandma” box and Biden did what he had to do by checking the “sleepytime comes after lunchtime” box. Or maybe not — maybe he’s not sleeping here but actually concentrating really hard to try to figure out how the hell the rich are singlehandedly going to close a $76 trillion long-term “fiscal gap.”

A third possibility: Maybe Biden was awake, listening intently, and just … couldn’t take it. It was, after all, “pitiful.”

Blowback

Allah,

The $76T is a huge number of course. But I hate when this is broken down to a number owed by each American as this piece you link to does. $250K owed over 75 years doesn’t sound that bad. That’s $3333 a year. Yeah it’s a bit of coin, but it’s not exactly the apocalypse either.

Why I hate the breakdown per American angle is we all know that 1/2 the people don’t pay a dime in taxes. Which means it’s really $500K per person over 75 years or $6666 per year. Now we’re talking some real money.

And it’s not really $500K per person since of the 50% that actually pay SOME taxes, 50% of those people barely pay anything. Which means for the people who are going to pay for it all it’s $750K per person over the next 75 years or $10K per person in extra taxes every single year until we die.

$3333/per person/per year is going to break a whole lot of families– especailly when you add in the snowball effect of what that much of an increase in taxes is going to do to the overall economy. Less to spend = less purchases = less jobs.

Unless your solution was to uber-tax the rich, which has been proven a non-viable option numerous times, both here and elsewhere.

The Congressional Budget Office estimate shows that compared with current spending rates the spending bill due for a House vote Thursday would pare just $352 million from the deficit through Sept. 30. About $8 billion in cuts to domestic programs and foreign aid are offset by nearly equal increases in defense spending.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/cbo-budget-deal-cuts-this-fiscal-years-deficit-by-just-353-million-not-38-billion-touted/2011/04/13/AFFJnkWD_story.html

RachDubya on April 13, 2011 at 5:20 PM

My solution is to cut spending. Don’t bite my head off just yet.

I am saying that when the media breaks down an incredibly huge number like $76 trillion into $3333 a year per person, it makes the situation seem a lot less dire. $3333 while a lot of money for most people isn’t THAT much money. It’s not a life changing amount for the vast majority of people. Do I prefer $3333 more vs. $3333 less? Of course. But if I have to pay an extra $3333 in taxes, it’s not exactly going to be the end of the world for me.
And yes I know, it will harm the economy. I know that. But, for the average low info person out there, they don’t see it that way. They see it as oh well, we all have to make sacrifices, so I’ll be taxed a little more in order to save SS and Medicare and all the other crap.

It also frames the debate on the Dem side on taxing the rich. Hey if it’s only $3333 per person per year, hell yea let’s tax the rich an extra $25,000 a year and that means 8 “regular people” don’t have to pay anything extra. After all for a millionaire, $25K won’t even be noticed.

Again, I don’t agree with it. But that’s how many people look at the issue.

No one bit anyone’s head off. Just because you don’t think $3333/year is a BFD doesn’t mean that opinion is shared by the masses– if anything, I think phrasing it that way would make people more inclined to view budget cuts positively.

And again, the snowball effect is going to be what makes this option (personal payment of the per person debt) so dangerous for our long-term economic situation.

RachDubya on April 13, 2011 at 5:40 PM
