Rand Paul at congressional hearing: Let me drop an Ayn Rand truth bomb on you
posted at 9:00 pm on April 12, 2011 by Allahpundit
Not as colorful as last month’s soliloquy on toilets, but still guaranteed to inspire high fives among libertarian C-SPAN junkies everywhere. Enjoy this, because his next big speech in the Senate is likely to be more controversial: He told Sean Hannity this afternoon that he might filibuster Boehner’s budget bill on Thursday when it comes up for a vote, and by “filibuster” I think he’s referring to the old-fashioned talk-til-you-drop version. He surely won’t have 41 votes to block the deal, assuming it even reaches the Senate, so the goal would simply be to register tea party protest of the package by dragging the proceedings out for several hours as the shutdown clock ticks down before relenting. Good retail politics, especially given growing grassroots dissatisfaction with the deal, but the real action will be in the House.
Exit question: Why don’t the RINOs in Congress ever use lessons from their own favorite books? Coming soon, perhaps: Scott Brown reads from “The Giving Tree.”

I’m rather stunned he referred to Ayn Rand as “Ann” Rand.
The author pronounced her first name to rhyme with “swine.” In fact, I saw a quote from her somewhere where she said “It’s Ayn as in swine.”
I had assumed that Rand Paul was named after Ayn Rand, so his error is all the more unfathomable.
Aside from that, however, his speech was admirable. I’m going to enjoy having Rand Paul in the Senate (much more than having Ron Paul in the House).

House progressives offer budget plan: Tax the rich, end the wars, slash oil subsidies, invest in jobs
April 11, 2011
****************
Liberal Dems claim the plan eliminates deficit by 2021
=======================================================
WASHINGTON – As the focus on Capitol Hill shifts [1] to America’s long-run fiscal woes, Congressional progressives are one step ahead of the White House and Democratic leaders in offering a counter-proposal to the House GOP approach.
The broad sketch proposes to end the Bush-era tax cuts on high income earners, enact a surtax on millionaires and billionaires, increase the the estate tax and eliminate corporate tax loopholes and subsidies for oil and coal companies. It also aims to create a public health insurance option, end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and invest $1.45 trillion in “job creation,” energy, housing and education programs.
The revenue-heavy proposal [2] (PDF) stands in stark contrast to the spending cuts-oriented plan put forth by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) — and championed by GOP leaders [3] — that slashes $6 trillion in federal programs (including Medicare and Medicaid) while significantly reducing taxes for wealthy Americans and corporations.
************************************************************
“This budget is transparent, straightforward and realistic about where we are in America right now,” Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ),
************************************************************
************************************************************
co-chair of the progressive caucus, told Raw Story. “The Ryan plan, for all the credit it gets for thinking big, doesn’t reflect the reality of the American economy. It destroys the successful programs that made this country strong,
************************************************************
especially Medicare and education, and doesn’t even try to explain how it creates jobs. It reflects a faith that making government disappear will somehow create prosperity.”

Obama prepares to revive tax cut debate — for now and 2012
April 12 2011(USA Today)
**************************
As he puts together his Wednesday speech on the federal debt, President Obama is poised to revive the great tax cut debate of late 2010 — and launch what is likely to be a major campaign issue of 2012.
Namely, tax rates for wealthier Americans.

Nothing wrong with that. Politics is like a well played game of chess. Sometimes you have to sacrifice a rook to get to the queen. Brown received national attention as the one who had a chance and the one who could break the senate vote.
Brown does his own thing. He ran on that platform and made it clear he would not be in lock-step with republicans. Still, he was a better candidate than his opponent.
Though many of us are not fond of it, politics really is about choosing the lesser of two evils.
Everyone here is going to have their “preferred” candidate in the primaries. In the end, only one will remain. If people become self-centered and claim “I won’t vote for him/her because they were not my candidate,” on election night, then we all lose. It’s not about us, it’s about our country.
BruthaMan on April 12, 2011 at 9:27 PM
Few people know “Ayn” Rand is but they might know ANN Rand -it’s a popular misspeak that has supplanted the proper pronunciation.. I think he just wanted to be understood by more people.

And I heard him say on Hannity today that he would cut the military budget if he could. Seems that national defense isn’t high on his priority list.
Voter from WA State on April 12, 2011 at 9:27 PM
you may be right, but defense has room for some cutting. Once defense dollars are appropriated, they’re sunk. Not much economic power comes out of a tank, unless you sell it.
ted c on April 12, 2011 at 9:30 PM
I shall summarize Senator Paul’s message:
The difference between freedom and a dictatorship comes down to one thing: Who makes the decisions.
In a free society I decide what I pay my employees.
I decide if I buy health insurance.
I decide what light bulb I buy.
I decide what my children are taught.
In a free society, I decide.
In Obama’s Amerika
Obama dictates that I will have insurance.
Obama dictates what that insurance will cover.
Obama dictates who the CEO of GM will be.
Obama dictates what executive compensation on Wall Street will be.
Obama dictates and dictates and dictates.
For a guy that is not a dictator Obama certainly does a lot of dictating.

The UN is catagorized as military/defense spending. There’s a whole lot of cuts one could make without hurting the military. The misnomer that military spending = strong military is on par with the notion that spending more on education = smarter kids with higher graduation rates.

I completely agree. You have said some very astute things of late. There is far too much emoting going on in this party and far too little rational thought.
Watching someone in action for a long period of time is very important. Anyone can say anything! People can think they will react a certain way under certain conditions, but until they have been tested they don’t even know themselves how they will react! Jumping on the bandwagon of every new “conservative” who speaks the right words is making me nuts!
I’m still okay with Brown’s win though… it was Ted’s seat and now it has an R after it… that is priceless!

I thought the reaction of the guy over Sen Paul’s right shoulder was really interesting. At first, he was just passing papers back and forth and gossiping with his fellow (I assume) staffers. Then he really seems to get engrossed in what Paul is saying, and even looks around the room as if guaging others’ reactions.

Both Ron and Rand Paul are isolationist in their thinking. It’s an off-shoot of Libertarianism that says “It’s none of our business what people in other countries do, unless they directly threaten us.”
As a result, I believe both Paul’s think the military budget could be greatly reduced to support a primarily defensive posture.
Because a lot of Republicans are hawkish interventionists who are inclined to view our national interests broadly (even if they stop short of favoring open-ended nation building missions), Paul’s isolationism may not sit well with Republicans as a whole.
He’s a mixed bag. But a very interesting mix.

The Trees – Rush
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their please.
The trouble with the maples,
(And they’re quite convinced they’re right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade.
There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream “Oppression!”
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
“The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light.”
Now there’s no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

It will be interesting to see who votes for this sham bill.
This is where we find out who the real tea partiers are in congress. If there are only a handful left it will not bode well for the future. If they vote for the Boehner’s sham bill they will be committing the same mistake that he is: renouncing the only leverage they have available to them. Who is going to believe the tea party has any teeth in future battles if they sign onto Beohners sham?
I think this is an essential point. If the tea party just goes along with the establishment on this then their influence is essentially dead.
Oh, but they’ll use the tea party to try to inspire turnout in November, of course. But otherwise they will be feckless.
I think this is where the rubber meets the road; where we find out who’s worth keeping and who get’s dropped.

The problem with isolationism is that you wait to fight aggression until you are fighting the war on your own soil.
The point on nation building is that you do not have to invade again in a few years. However I am not a fan of how we tried to do it in Iraq, and Afghanistan. In Iraq we should have built three nations, and made sure the Kurds got all the oil in the north. Afghanistan has been at war with its self ever since the introduction Islam; so the first thing to do is eliminate everyone that reacts violently to ‘insults to Islam’, fallowed quickly by the pedophiles.
The intervention in Libya should have been by assassination.

Might you consider moving to Israel then? I mean, at this point we really need Americans who are interested in the future of America. If Rand Paul is the guy who gets it, then we really need to support him.
Not trying to be mean, but Israel doesn’t need our money. Israel doesn’t need our military muscle(they kicked hell out of 3 or 4 Arab countries all at one time). Come to think of it, Israel doesn’t need us for much of anything.
So it rankles me a bit to see an American parrot some brain dead mantra about support for Israel. Israel is never going to put American interests before its own. Isn’t it time we take the same view of our own country……….before it’s too late?
