When is a war crime not a war crime?

posted at 10:45 am on April 9, 2011 by Meryl Yourish

The charge of “war crime” is thrown endlessly at Israel, to the point that the Goldstone Report was commissioned and issued by the United Nations Human Rights Committee. It dealt with supposed war crimes by Israel, yet did not once accuse Hamas of war crimes.

The media put forward all charges of Israel committing war crimes. Take the Mavi Marmara incident. How many articles did you read about whether or not Israel committed war crimes against the passengers (those beacons of peaceful protest that only recently repeated their commitment to destroying Israel)?

Take a look at what Britain’s foreign minister had to say about the deliberate targeting of a school bus.

Earlier, British Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the anti-tank missile attack on a childrens’ school bus in the Negev, calling it a “despicable” and “cowardly” act.

“I unreservedly condemn today’s attack from Gaza on a bus carrying school children in southern Israel. The initial reports we have received suggest the bus was deliberately targeted and that a 16-year-old boy has been critically injured,” Hague said.

“This is a despicable and cowardly act that stands in stark contrast to people’s desire for peaceful reform across the region. Violence will never deliver peace,” Hague continued.

Only a week ago, Hague’s office released a report on the world’s 26 worst human rights violators. Israel was in the report, along with 25 actual human rights abusers. If, as Hague says above, he has reports that Hamas deliberately targeted the school bus (which it did), then this is not a “despicable and cowardly act.” It is a human rights violation. It is a war crime. And yet, Hague doesn’t use that language to describe it. Why is that? Why is it that his office can slander Israel as a violator of Palestinian human rights, but it can’t call a war crime a war crime? The deliberate targeting of civilians is a war crime. Hamas deliberately targeted a school bus full of children (it hoped).

Don’t hold your breath waiting to hear Hague condemn Hamas war crimes. He’s too busy accusing Israel of them. As for the EU, well, there isn’t even a mention of Hamas in Catherine Ashton’s rote condemnation of “violence.” It’s as if the rockets launched themselves. And mention of a school bus? Surely you jest.

“I strongly condemn yesterday’s mortar and rocket attacks out of the Gaza strip, which once again hit the innocent civilian population and which must stop immediately,” she said.

“I am deeply concerned by the current escalation of violence,” the 27-nation EU’s foreign policy chief said in a statement.

“I also deplore the loss of civilian life in Gaza and call on Israel to show restraint.

No, the label of war crimes is never attached to actual war crimes perpetrated by Palestinians against Israelis. That label is reserved for Israel only, especially when Israel is doing no such thing.

We must once again call on a refrain we got too tired to use recently. What time is it? That’s right, it’s Israeli Double Standard Time. But don’t worry. It only occurs on days that end with a “y.”

There is no end to the scapegoating the left can muster against Jews, and no end to my constant dismay that American Jews continue to support such people.

Laughable.

Doesn’t anyone think it’s odd that the left and Islamists come together in their burning desire to wipe Israel and the Jews off the face of the earth?

Jews are a small fraction of the world population and Israel is less than one percent of the land mass of the Middle East, yet all hatred, money, resources, energy and weapons are directed towards this tiny country.

It seems the singular purpose of the left and Islam is to cleanse the world of Jews, then Christians.

Since all Israelis are technically draftable into their military, there are no ‘civilians’ in Israel, of any age, thus everyone in Israel is a legitimate military target.” -Hamas/Islamo-logic.

But, by this ‘logic’, no Muslim is anything but a potential jihadi. Proudly, usually.

And an equally legitimate target.

Summary of Overnight IDF Activity in Response to Grad Missiles, Rockets and Mortars Fired at Israel
Posted on April 9, 2011 by Israel Defense Forces

Overnight, IAF aircraft targeted several terror activity sites in the Gaza Strip in response to the severe number of Grad missiles, rockets and mortars fired at the Israeli home front. As a result of IDF activity since the attack on the children’s school bus on Thursday, April 7th 2011, approximately fifteen terrorists were killed and an additional fifty injured.

In a joint IDF- ISA activity, an IAF aircraft targeted a senior Hamas operative in the southern Gaza Strip, Tayser Abu Snima, along with two additional Hamas operatives. Snima held several major roles in the military wing of Hamas and was involved in many terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers. Most recently, he was in charge of executing a terror attack from Sinai, firing rockets at the city of Eilat.

Overnight IAF aircraft targeted a truck containing weaponry in the northern Gaza Strip, a direct hit was confirmed and secondary blasts were identified. Also targeted were a terror activity site in the northern Gaza Strip and a smuggling tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed.

Additionally, IAF Aerial Defense Corps forces, using the “Iron Dome” system intercepted seven missiles fired at the Israeli home front.

Over the past 48 hours, terror organizations in the Gaza Strip fired over 70 Grad missiles, rockets and mortars at the Israeli home front.

The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will continue to operate with strength and determination against any terrorist organization using terror against the state of Israel. The Hamas terrorist organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.

A word to the wise: Muslims and Liberals don’t hate Jews and Christians who serve them as inferior serfs. However, Muslims and liberals are furious that Jews and Christians have any political control anywhere on this earth, but most especially in Jerusalem. It is the free worship of the King of the Jews in His City that has them spooked into a continuous murderous rage.

jimw on April 9, 2011 at 11:38 AM

Israeli soldiers (IDF) wear uniforms, Hamas terrorists do not (unless you consider the fashionably trendy keffiyeh). Therefore, only soldiers can commit “War Crimes.” Hamas baby killers and those brave murderers of unarmed civilians cannot be charged with War Crimes, only “Human Rights Abuses” cause they don’t sport fatigues.

Got it. So, basically, its all about fashion?

A small sample this week from the LA Times.

What would you do if someone confiscated your land in the name of their religion? Would you sit back and take it, or would you try to get your land back? What would you teach your children?

One of those ruined mosques is undoubtedly in Canada Park.

‘Imwas was one of those villages. Here are some pictures of ‘Imwas from the other side.

Now imagine this type of behavior extending into the present — with settlers taking over land farmed by Palestinians at will, and then doing their darndest to make the remaining Palestinians move:

An oddity of life in the Old City of Hebron are wire nets stretched over rooftops. The nets are strewn with plastic bottles, paper and garbage. Kern explained that many Palestinian families have a protective screen over their courtyard to protect them from settlers dropping blocks of concrete and other objects onto them. If the mesh is broken, the Palestinians have to apply for a permit to get a new screen and must pay a fee both for the new permit and the new screen .
“It’s strategic,” peacemaker volunteer LeAnne Clausen said of the violence committed by the settlers. “It’s trying to drive Palestinians away. It’s very similar to what a paramilitary might try to do.”

We’ve seen this type of behavior before — and it was accompanied by a similar lack of will (or perhaps anti-will) on the behalf of authorities to support the rule of law. Certain people were beaten, their property confiscated, their ways of life extinquished — for the good of the rest of the people, while the enforcers of law were instructed to stand idly by.

OK, I’ll play your silly game. What do you teach your children about the effects of attempting to annihilate a country, getting your ass kicked, and losing some land in the process? To you teach them it’s OK to ask for a do-over? Or do you tell them you had better win or suffer the consequences?

I guess you’re one of those folks who think we need to return Texas to the Mexicans.

Israel should do the obvious.

The next time Hamas “civilians” lob a couple of indescriminate mortar or rocket rounds into Israeli communities just north of Gaza, Israel instead of targeting the Hamas perpetrators with UAV lauched Hellfires, should simply respond with a like number of indescriminate rounds themselves aimed somewhat near the launch point.

Hamas has not yet been cited for war crimes so I would guess the Israelis would get a pass also.

Take your medications. Your bizarre fantasies about my life are, well, down right creepy and not a sign of a mentally healthy person.

Isn’t the Ivy League schools where our oh so smart leaders hail from. In their smartness they haven’t done much of a job leading this country. Explain again why any of us ought to trust what comes out of the Ivy League.

chemman on April 9, 2011 at 1:19 PM

Didn’t I explain this once already to you morons? It’s a website with a compilation of all the laws of wars. If Yale is so scary to you, you can google the individual laws and find many other sources for them on the internet. Have at it. But, since you absolutely have no interest in the subject matter and just want to attack me for not marching in lockstep to the pretzel logic you and others are spewing, I’m sure you won’t.

I guess you’re one of those folks who think we need to return Texas to the Mexicans should return Mexico to the original Native Americans.

You’re welcome. It’s actually an interesting subject. And don’t be fooled by some resolutions and treaties. The US often opts out of certain clauses and sections, meaning we are not bound by them.

Very strange they didn’t call this a war crime.

Is there a single reporter in the world that can ask the right question to the right person so they admit it was a war crime publicly?
