Video: Oddly enough, new celebrity Planned Parenthood ad doesn’t mention abortion

posted at 6:35 pm on April 8, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Media Blog, I’m almost disappointed. What happened to their usual talking point that they don’t use federal funds for abortions but only for their other services — which, of course, frees up money from other sources that would have gone towards those other services for more abortions instead? We’re five and a half hours from shutting down the federal government partly because of a standoff over PP’s abortion practice, yet you’d have not the slightest inkling of it from what you’re about to see. There’s not even a euphemism, like “population control” or something about “inconveniences.” Too bad.

Ezra Klein reminded WaPo’s readers this afternoon that “only” three percent or so of PP’s overall funding goes to abortions. Here’s what that means in human terms:

Planned Parenthood performed 332,278 abortions in the United States in 2009, according to a fact sheet the group published last month.

That is about as many as the 333,012 people who lived in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The 332,278 abortions Planned Parenthood performed over the 365 days of 2009 equals an average of 910 lives terminated per day–or about 38 per hour, or one every 95 seconds.

Two questions for you as you watch Scarlett Johansson ignore the giant elephant in the room. One: If Klein’s right that abortion is an insignificant little nothing in the grand scheme of Planned Parenthood’s “business,” why don’t they drop the service? Stick with contraception and cancer screening, etc, and they’ll never have to worry about funding again, Pelosi’s latest insane demagoguery notwithstanding. And two: As I said to one of our trolls who was whining about this in Headlines, I thought a core principle of true “choice” warriors was that there’s nothing to be ashamed of in defending abortion. On the contrary, we’re told, we should celebrate the fact that we live in a country so “evolved” that abortion is not only widely available, it’s actually a constitutional right. Okay, then, why isn’t PP celebrating it? Where’s Scarlett’s “Say it loud, we abort and we’re proud” battle cry on PP’s behalf? Mystifying.

Update: My apologies: I’d completely forgotten Ed’s post about Abby Johnson and the true volume of abortion services at PP. According to Johnson, it’s not three percent of their “business.” It’s more like 12 percent.

I love how, every time the left feels threatened in the court of public opinion, they run to celebrities to save the day. You know, instead of defending their stances on the actual issues at hand.

The new, warm and fuzzy Planned Parenthood, which has nothing to do with parenthood at all.

I would think the right could find ladies that got an abortion through Aborting Parenthood, who now regret it. Have them tell a little bit of their experience, then at the end, give out the figures of how many deaths Aborted Parenthood has on their hands.

Should be able to squeeze that into 30 seconds.

AP, the 3% myth was exposed by Abby Johnson in an article you guys posted here at HA. I’m surprised you’ve forgotten about it already:

http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/politics/153699-exposing-the-planned-parenthood-business-model

Planned Parenthood’s claim that abortions make up just 3 percent of its services is also a gimmick. That number is actually closer to 12 percent, but strategically skewed by unbundling family planning services so that each patient shows anywhere from five to 20 “visits” per appointment (i.e., 12 packs of birth control equals 12 visits) and doing the opposite with abortion visits, bundling them together so that each appointment equals one visit. The resulting difference between family planning and abortion “visits” is striking.

There was a pretty disgusting ad praising Margaret Sanger put in the Wall Street Journal by Richard Mellon Scaife recently… hardly anybody noticed it though.

Quite honestly, I think there are a lot of rich elites who don’t like abortion but support it because who it keeps from being born… and there is something to that position…

Quite honestly, the Catholic Church’s support for open borders greatly harms the American pro-life movement because these new immigrants help prop up the demographics exploited by the pro-choicers.

Hmm. Nice and fluffy. No mention of what the “right” we supposedly have does to unwanted children. Scarlett, in the moment that you pull money out of my pocketbook to pay for your supposed private right, that is the moment it becomes a legitimate target for debate and legal regulation. I’m sure that Government money paid for this video, and I want the Govenment to pay for mine — it’s only fair, right?

We’ll see if the above gets by the PP censors.

Planned Parenthood spent more than $1 million electing Democrats last cycle
04/08/11 4:23 PM
*******************

Here’s something to keep in mind as Democrats risk a government shutdown in order to preserve federal subsidies of Planned Parenthood. From the Center for Responsive Politics:

In 2010, Planned Parenthood and a California affiliate together spent more than $700,000 on federal lobbying efforts, a Center for Responsive Politics analysis of federal lobbying records finds. By comparison, all other organizations that primarily advocate for abortion rights collectively spent $247,280 on federal lobbying efforts during the same period, according to the Center’s research.

The ad is meant to support continued federal funding of their reproductive health services. Since by law that money can’t be used for abortions, yeah, it makes sense they only mention the services the money is actually being used for.

If Klein’s right that abortion is an insignificant little nothing in the grand scheme of Planned Parenthood’s “business,” why don’t they drop the service?

Klein doesn’t imply that abortion is an “insignificant little nothing,” merely that it’s of secondary importance compared to their other services. They don’t drop it because it’s a medically accepted component of comprehensive reproductive health services, which is what they provide. You wouldn’t ask hospitals to drop comparatively less common procedures based solely on their rarity. Same applies here.

Okay, then, why isn’t PP celebrating it?

Because it’s irrelevant to the question of the federal funding they’re asking to retain. They’re not asking taxpayers to fund abortions. If the ad included the kind of abortion cheerleading that you suggest, it would actually mislead inattentive viewers into the exact misperception they’re trying to dispel. I don’t get it. Are you upset that they’re not using their own ad to promote their opposition’s views?

According to Johnson, it’s not three percent of their “business.” It’s more like 12 percent.

Well, that’s one claim. There’s no reason to prefer her partisan claims over Planned Parenthood’s, especially considering that her version is necessarily outdated (former clinic director).

As I said to one of our trolls who was whining about this in Headlines, I thought a core principle of true “choice” warriors was that there’s nothing to be ashamed of in defending abortion.

The ad is meant to support continued federal funding of their reproductive health services. Since by law that money can’t be used for abortions, yeah, it makes sense they only mention the services the money is actually being used for.

This is the most dishonest thing you’ve ever posted. There is no way in the world that they can say this money has never gone to an abortion. Even if they made sure that every single abortion doctor on staff was paid from money not given by the taxpayers and if every facility they used was likewise not paid for by tax payers, and if all those electricity bills, office and medical supplies likewise saw no taxpayer dollars whatsoever, you’re still left with Allah’s point about that money enabling them to provide abortions in the first place.

You’re a lot smarter than this.

You wouldn’t ask hospitals to drop comparatively less common procedures based solely on their rarity. Same applies here.

This isn’t just about its rarity but its controversy. They want tax payer dollars, so tax payers feel entitled to say how their money is spent.

You feel the same way when the dollars are going towards some religious practice or symbol. Just because some government worker spends his own money to put up a cross in a public building doesn’t mean your tax payer dollars haven’t contributed to it. Your money went to the building itself. Doesn’t matter if it didn’t go towards the actual religious symbol. Same applies here.

Because it’s irrelevant to the question of the federal funding they’re asking to retain.

If you help fund PP, you’re funding an organization that performs abortions. There’s really no severing it, and that’s why it’s perfectly relevant, especially as PP tries to normalize abortion.

Well, that’s one claim. There’s no reason to prefer her partisan claims over Planned Parenthood’s, especially considering that her version is necessarily outdated (former clinic director).

So it necessarily applies to money tax payers have already spent but maybe PP dramatically cut down on abortions even though the stats say PP is only performing even more abortions every year? I guess it’s their mammogram ads that have all the women flocking in these days.

Is it considered trolling to simple disagree? Your site, your rules, but I think he was a heck of a lot more civil and reasonable than the reflexively insulting responses he got from some of the commenters here.

Things like the obsession with having abortions are the concern of white liberals. Whites in general are not reproducing and that’s partly because of abortions.

Hispanics are reproducing and flooding into the US in huge numbers. Hispanics in general do not give a crap about abortion or things like global warming or other pet white people causes! They don’t give a rat’s a$$ about that cr@p! And they’re not going to start incorporating it into their lives!

All these pet causes of white liberals are going to die out along with the population of white liberals in the coming decades. Little cupcakes like Scarlett Johansson and their preachy activism are irrelevant. People like her will be as rare as snow leopards in 3 or 4 decades.

The only people who listen to her are white liberals just like her. They are accelerating their own extinction and, ultimately, are going to have no effect on the world at all.

Django on April 8, 2011 at 10:04 PM

PP also gets their nasty little brochures into the pediatricians’ offices, and has them hand them to boys and girls from age 10 or so, explaining how great masturbation and premarital sex is. Never mind that parents are the first and best educators of their children, or that morals and ethics might come into play. If we don’t have kids making little fetuses, how can PP get the funding to kill those fetuses?

They do this with my tax dollars, but they won’t get to do it to my kid.

Again, legally they can’t spend that money on abortion. I think the Hyde amendment applies here, and there’s never been a successful challenge (or any challenge, to my knowledge) that showed they’re violating that law. If they are spending federal money on abortion, conservatives have an easier path to shutting down PP than playing chicken with the Democrats over the federal budget. But they haven’t, and they can’t, so why is it dishonest to state a fact that even conservative activists apparently accept when push comes to shove?

This isn’t just about its rarity but its controversy. They want tax payer dollars, so tax payers feel entitled to say how their money is spent.

Absolutely, and Planned Parenthood is entitled to defend what the voters have previously accepted through the elected representatives in both houses of congress. Not everybody is going to be happy with how their tax dollars are spent. That would be impossible and, really, foolish.

But I don’t think that matters in AP’s formulation of his question, which premised the importance of abortion to PP on how frequently it’s performed. It also happened to distort Klein’s argument that put PP’s services in a broader context.

So it necessarily applies to money tax payers have already spent but maybe PP dramatically cut down on abortions even though the stats say PP is only performing even more abortions every year? I guess it’s their mammogram ads that have all the women flocking in these days.

Population is always growing, so the rate of abortions could go down and yet PP could perform more abortions. Without seeing the stats you’re referring to, I really can’t say whether I agree with any one interpretation. It could be that PP and the former clinic director are both being honest about the numbers, which suggests that there might actually be fewer abortions now than when she was a clinic director. Since I’m not against abortion in principle, it’s a moot point anyway.

Not speaking for Allah, but he simply called him a troll as a noun, not as an adjective for his behavior in that thread. Proud’s been here long enough for people here to make up their minds.

That’s fair. As a long time contrarian here, I’m admittedly a little oversensitive about how casually the troll label gets tossed around.

History reminds us what typically happens to those naively self-serving seduced into not being against convenience killing in principle to feel stylish. What goes around comes around.

Maybe Miss Scarlett should attend an abortion. She might have a change of heart and stop promoting the killing of children.

Planned Parenthood performed 332,278 abortions in the United States in 2009, according to a fact sheet the group published last month.

That is about as many as the 333,012 people who lived in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Come on. That still leaves more than thirty people alive. What’s the big deal?

Judging from the video, it looks like SJ had a breast reduction:-(

I was on my way to Glenn Beck’s show in Greensboro last night and passed a group of women protesting against John Boehner in front of the local Planned Parenthood office. Too bad I did not have time to stop and engage them.

I thought a core principle of true “choice” warriors was that there’s nothing to be ashamed of in defending abortion. Mystifying.

Whatever happened to “abortion on demand and without apology!”? It seems the Great Abortion Mill has figured out that their position is now the minority position.

There goes another actor/actress I sorta liked.

Ain`t many left now.

Then again an actor is generally someone who can just pretend pretty well and memorize stuff others wrote down.

Ability to act has little correlation with intelligence?? Is there a study on this somewhere?

Maybe I am expecting too much.

I am expecting too much!

Still can`t they just shut up if they don`t know what the crap they are talking about??

Then again someone who doesn`t know crap then acts on that plentiful ignorance is the general profile of a lib.

But this dame is cute!!

Lost in Translation is one of my favorite films. And I had just got to the point where I remember to pronounce the “J” in her name instead of saying “Yo!”

Sigh . . . .
