Quotes of the day

“The leader of the free world may be coming to Williamsburg for some rest and relaxation if Congress is able to come to agreement on the budget. President Obama and the First Family are planning to visit the area this weekend in what the White House described Wednesday as a ‘long-planned family trip to Colonial Williamsburg.’

“But the trip might get grounded if a government shutdown can’t be averted by Republicans and Democrats in Congress…

“Tom Shrout, a spokesman for Colonial Williamsburg, said that he had not received any confirmation on Wednesday that the Obamas would be visiting. ‘It’d be wonderful to have them visit the historic area,’ Shrout said. ‘But we’ve had no confirmation of it at this time. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.’”

***
“Democratic sources tell ABC News that things ‘feel better now’ in terms of a deal being cut, but the major sticking point remains the GOP rider prohibiting any federal funding to Planned Parenthood or any of its affiliates.

“The final figure for budget cuts is a work in progress – somewhere between $33 and $36 billion in new spending cuts – but negotiators are ‘very close,’ one Democratic told ABC News. Democratic officials likely will accept more spending cuts if they are not in areas they are trying to protect, such as education.”

***
“In a joint statement Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner addressed the results of the budget meeting held at the White House Thursday evening, saying, ‘We have narrowed the issues, however, we have not yet reached an agreement. We will continue to work through the night to attempt to resolve our remaining differences.’”

***
“POTUS canceling Friday trip to Indianapolis, Indiana, because of budget negotiation”

***
“‘I’m not yet prepared to express wild optimism, but we’re further along today than we were yesterday,’ Obama said in his second late-night visit to the White House briefing room in about 24 hours…

“‘I expect an answer in the morning,’ Obama said.”

The outrage should be the lack of a nation wide understanding of how lopsided the spending issue is, Republicans aren’t coming close to bringing us in line with living within our means, Democrats have set us on an incredibly reckless fiscal course and they’re acting like the world is coming to an end with maybe a 10% cut?

The left is getting away with murder, Where’s the outrage?

Budget battle latest and widespread impact
President Obama says he needs an answer this morning from Congressional leaders working to avoid a government shutdown at midnight.
=====================

CBS)- President Obama says he needs an answer this morning from Congressional leaders working to avoid a government shutdown at midnight.

(President Obama) “My hope is, is that I’ll be able to announce to the American people sometime relatively early in the day that a shutdown has been averted.”

It was another all-nighter for Congressional aides — still trying to reach a compromise on federal funding for the final six months of the fiscal year. The President says his 4th meeting with House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid last night yielded progress…but still no deal.

(Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid/(D) Nevada) “We haven’t settled the issues in 40 years. We’re not gonna settle them in a few hours.”

(Joel Brown/Washington) “But a few hours are all they have. If Republicans and Democrats can’t forge an agreement sometime today….about 800 thousand government workers would be furloughed, national parks and museums would shut down and US troops may not get their full paychecks.”

(Sen. Jerry Moran/(R) Kansas) “Resolve this issue now, and make certain we resolve it in a way that no member of our armed services or their family is harmed by the decisions that we make.”

(Kay Bailey Hutchison/(R) Texas) “At least protect our military serving in Afghanistan and Iraq and their families that are back home.”

NATS: “All those in favor say aye. AYE!!!”

Yesterday, House Republicans passed a bill to keep the government running for another week…but it’s not likely to make it to a Senate vote.
It includes 12 billion dollars in spending cuts that Democrats oppose.
The extent of spending cuts in the budget are at the heart of the impasse.

The President canceled today’s planned trip to Indianapolis. He’s staying in Washington in hopes of breaking the stalemate.

Budget Fight Hinges on Abortions and EPA
Friday, April 8, 2011
**********************

The old conservative bugbears are back. As the last grains of sand trickle through the budgetary hourglass, House Republicans want any deal to including funding cuts to family planning and the Environmental Protection Agency. After another inconclusive late-night session with congressional leaders on Thursday night, President Obama said he expects an answer by Friday morning. “I am not yet prepared to express wild optimism,” said the president after his tête-à-tête with top Democrat Harry Reid and Republican House Speaker John Boehner. Concessions from both sides still left a gap between Boehner’s offer of $39 billion in cuts and the Democratic compromise of $34.5 billion. Republican insistence on slashing federal financing for domestic and overseas family planning has cast a pall over the talks. The GOP also hopes to rein in the regulatory power of the EPA, particularly when it comes to the Clean Air Act and carbon emissions. “This is no longer about the budget deficit,” said the No. 2 Senate Democrat Richard J. Durbin of Illinois. “It’s about bumper stickers.” Boehner denied this, saying that “there are a number of issues that are on the table,” according to the New York Times.

You mentioned the military. I was listening to a morning show…local in the southeast here. Anyway…they were reading an email from a soldier in Iraq. He listens to them, when he’s home, but can’t in Iraq, but wanted them to check around, to see why his, and many of his buddies there (Army) had $800 or so deducted from their pay. There has been no explanation forth coming, but this is an odd turn, and I know I’d certainly like to know why so much is being taken out of their checks. What are they doing with this money?
