Pelosi: The GOP’s getting ready to starve six million seniors or something

posted at 5:48 pm on April 5, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart. I don’t know which budget bill she’s talking about, the 2011 one or Ryan’s new one, but if it’s the former than she’s actually complaining here about a GOP budget that she could have prevented by passing a budget herself last year when she was Speaker. (Of course, with Democrats in control in the Senate and White House, any Mass Senior Starvation Program would require bipartisan support to pass now anyway.) Anyway, get used to this: Warnings about grandma being forced to eat styrofoam peanuts and Fancy Feast because of heartless Republicans and their insane crusade for solvency will be a staple of Democratic talking points by next November, especially with the White House desperate to win back seniors alienated by ObamaCare. Last week it was the GOP wanting kids abroad to die of malaria, this week it’s our nation’s elderly being made to eat out of garbage cans or else waste away, next week it’ll be something to do with puppies. So let me repeat the question posed last week: If they’re this worried about important programs falling through the cracks, shouldn’t they want to come to the table and make some sort of deal on a long-term sustainable budget that protects welfare programs to some extent? How does letting the country collapse fiscally, which would prompt truly draconian cuts under an austerity plan to rebalance the books, put more food on seniors’ tables? In fact, that’s one of my core complaints with the GOP’s “messaging” thus far, as bold as it’s otherwise been. Thanks to Obama’s appalling, irresponsible budget, the public is still under the illusion that we’re debating whether to reform entitlements. We aren’t. We’re debating when to reform them — now, when we have the luxury of lengthy debate, or later under extreme duress. I know how Nancy would solve this problem, but her answer is no more realistic politically than wanting to abolish Social Security and Medicare. So what’s the magic Pelosi plan for keeping those seniors — and everyone else — fed and insured and averting a fiscal catastrophe, the part of the equation that somehow always gets lost in these heartbreaking tales of woe? She’s the House majority leader for the Party Of Ideas™, right? Let’s hear some ideas.

If Paul Ryan’s budget proposals succeed, I wish I could be a senior. I really enjoy the taste of canned dog and cat food. Too bad I wouldn’t be able to afford a can opener. See, it’s like this – they’re not ‘worried about important programs falling through the cracks’.

They’re not worried about kids dying of malaria.

They’re not worried about Grandma eating Fancy Feast.

They *love* that they get to *pretend* to be worried about it, so they can *lie* and demagogue and beat their chests and rend their garments over how evil the Republicans are.

They don’t want to come to the table to avoid this, AP – they want to stay away from the table for no other reason than and precisely *because* it gives them this cudgel that the MSM will help them use against the Republicans.

Pelosi: The GOP’s getting ready to starve six million seniors or something

C’mon Nancy, try coming up with something a little more original. For those of you a bit young, when the Republicans took power in 1995, Pelosi and the “dem leaders” all cried about starving the children and seniors when ever balancing a budget was brought to the house floor.

And when ever a built in increase on a certain program was reduced by a few percentages they all cried “it’s a cut”.

Boo frikken hoo Nancy…..you’re spending days are over.

How does letting the country collapse fiscally, which would prompt truly draconian cuts under an austerity plan to rebalance the books, put more food on seniors’ tables?

Liberals don’t see it this way. They see 2 options:

1. Cut spending
or
2. Raise taxes on the rich

In either case the budget get balanced. With #1 puppies and kids die. With #2 puppies and kids are happy and only the evil rich are hurt (and they’re evil and rich so they deserve to die so it’s a net-net).

Of course you could impose a 100% tax on the rich and it wouldn’t make a dent in the deficit. But facts never got in the way of a good story for a liberal.

How does letting the country collapse fiscally, which would prompt truly draconian cuts under an austerity plan to rebalance the books, put more food on seniors’ tables?

That’s pretty much my question – how does pushing the country over the edge help anybody? (Besides the Socialists, that is)

Thanks to Obama’s appalling, irresponsible budget, the public is still under the illusion that we’re debating whether to reform entitlements. We aren’t.
We’re debating when to reform them — now, when we have the luxury of lengthy debate, or later under extreme duress.

angryed on April 5, 2011 at 6:03 PM

The only problem with option 2 is that it destroys the economy – who would invest in a place where property can be simply stolen like this?

As someone else pointed out already, the destruction of the economy with increasing higher taxation will exacerbate the short falls in any retirement programs. Those funds are usually invested somewhere – a crashing economy would mean crashing investment portfolios.

It’s double the effect of a single Raise taxes on the rich policy – but maybe the Oppressive-left sees that as a feature instead of a bug.

Dog Food!

Liberals Twist Sarcastic Rush Riff Into a Call for Segregated Buses!
September 18, 2009

************************************************************

Democrats were calling around saying that Republicans were engaging in their usual stuff of cutting Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and they run around saying that food stamps and senior citizens were soon going to have to make the choice of eating dog food and being able to buy medicine or eating real food and not buying medicine.
************************************************************

So all this is banging around Washington the whole week before I get there. So I open up the speech by thanking the GOPAC people for inviting me. “It’s really great to be here and, I’ll tell you what, I’m so happy the Democrats are doing what they’re doing because I have heard them and Iwant you people to know: I love my mother and I love old people.
========

************************************************************
“And since the Democrats have told me what’s going to happen, what I have done is I went out and I bought my mom a new can opener so that she can get the dog food easier when she has to eat it,” and the place busted up laughing.
************************************************************

Well, now, this was televised on C-SPAN. Pat Schroeder went to the floor of the House the next day and said, “This is what it’s come to! This is it! Rush Limbaugh actually said he’s going to buy his mother a can opener so she can have dog food. Wow!” I could not believe it. These people are humorless. So we must steal from future generations to feed the seniors… that’s the point she wants to try to make?

We must rob the children and force them to starve later, to hell with the future, the old people need their perks even if we can’t afford them.

Screw the children

Is that the new Democrat strategy? Or perhaps I’m missing how she’s going to avoid dumping debt onto the next generation until they can’t possibly have a functional economy?

gekkobear on April 5, 2011 at 6:49 PM

Fancy Feast is costly but doesn’t give you the bulk. Wellness Core for adult cats and kittens is only $38 for a 12 lb bag on Amazon. 50% protein, 18% fat, Omega-3 and -6, vitamin C, no grains, antioxidants. This stuff has completely turned my 9-year-old kitty around. She’s lost a lot of her belly fat, her coat is sleek, and she’s very playful. Grandma could do worse.

Or, Michele Bachmann should simply walk over and deck her. Michele Bachmann knows first hand what it means to act as a Christian, just ask the couple dozen foster kids Michelle has taken into her home, among others she has championed.

The people are separated individually, one from another, as one would separate sheep and goats. One does not separate sheep from goats by driving half the flock one way and half the other. Rather, it is the characteristics of each that determines what they are.

So it is with charity. If one has provided food, clothing and shelter for the least on his own, that one receives the reward. One gains nothing if one’s neighbor has done the feeding, cloathing and sheltering. Rather that one is taken away as a goat, while his neighbor sheep goes the other way.

I do not pay taxes out of charity. I pay taxes because the law will punish me if I do not. But if I pay my taxes, the law will leave me alone. I have received my reward, and that money no longer belongs to me. So, if I direct the government to spend money on charitable things, I am not directing them to spend my own money. I am asking them to spend money that does not belong to me.

To bring it back to the neighbors. If I tell my neighbor to feed and cloathe and shelter the needy using his own money, but do none of these things with my own money, will I be judged a sheep or a goat when the time comes?

** I posted this over on the other thread before I saw this one. I think my comment is more appropriate to this discussion so I’ll put it here too. Second and final copy I promise. But I am interested in feedback if offered. **

I often feel frustrated. Because our ideology of smaller government makes it hard for us to convey that we care as much about the elderly, the children, and the poor. We care, but our point of reference is different so that it doesn’t enter into the discussion of government spending. We believe that individuals should care for the elderly, the children, and the poor.

Jesus cared deeply about these people. And Jesus was a huge supporter of the concept of wealth redistribution. It disappointed me that the concept of wealth distribution itself, was what was seemly confronted by republicans during the 2008 election, referencing “Joe the Plumber”. But wealth redistribution was never the problem. It was the agent of that distribution that was the problem. Jesus never asked anyone to send their wallet to Rome so that Caeser could redistribute wealth. Jesus wants you, and me, and others personally to redistribute our wealth.

And that is what needs to be the message of republicans. Particularly in our economy when so many are hurting. It’s not that we care less, but rather we care differently. I want the elderly, the poor, the children and others in society who can not look after themselves to receive compassion and care. But that care, that compassion needs to come from the heart and the action of individuals and private sector organizations who are better able to respond to their needs. It’s more efficient and less wasteful.

But how do we convey that message… When we cut spending we just create a void, a vacuum, and that is what scares people. And that vacuum becomes the message for people looking to expand the size and power of government. But as you pointed out, though the vacuum may look scary, it can lead to a better outcome for the people themselves. How should the republican message address the fear of the vacuum or transition between government support and private sector support when the government support is the only defined entity and the private sector support has not yet been realized?
