NCAA championship open thread: UConn vs. Butler

posted at 9:00 pm on April 4, 2011 by Allahpundit

Tip-off’s at 9:20 ET on CBS; celebrate or agonize below as you see fit. I think of this not so much as a game as one of those rare news events where the world unites to try to will a happy outcome into being. The moon landing, the rescue of the Chilean miners, and now the unlikely second shot at a championship for a mid-major that wasn’t supposed to be there last year either and somehow ended up an inch short (or, rather, long) against the Blue Devils. The odds of consecutive title game appearances for Butler were, according to Nate Silver, 7,406 to one — and yet here we are. It’s really quite simple: If you’re rooting for UConn, you’re a communist.

Unfortunately, the commies are probably going to win. It’s science.

Not underdogs, AP…bulldogs.

Good Solid B-Plus on April 4, 2011 at 9:04 PM

Watch out for the Mack attack.

Brutal. Absolutely true, but brutal.

//Don’t hurt me Huskie fans! I’m kidding.

Pat Forde agrees. Well, not about the Communist part. He got a few digs in at Calhoun (you have to read to the end).

conservative pilgrim on April 4, 2011 at 9:05 PM

No son of mine will be a sweaty little jock playing shooty hoops!

Aquateen Hungerforce on April 4, 2011 at 9:07 PM

As a Duke fan, I can cheer for the Bulldogs this year. I pains me to admit that one of the best signs I saw on Saturday night was “Where’s Duke?” Bulldogs deserve all the credit for what they’ve done this postseason. Quite remarkable.

conservative pilgrim on April 4, 2011 at 9:08 PM

If you’re rooting for UConn, you’re a communist.

But I live in Connecticut! Go Huskies!

I am not a Communist–I resemble that remark!

Steve Z on April 4, 2011 at 9:09 PM

I sooooo wanted that shot to go in last year. I’m not suggesting that Duke sucks or anything. *ok, yes I am. Duke sucks.*

predator on April 4, 2011 at 9:09 PM

Incidentally, the Communist in Chief predicted Kansas would win. They’re not even in the finals…

Dang–should have been fighting Gadhafi instead!

Hmm. Never any love for college football at Hot Air, but then AP busts a move with hoops?

Second look at Hot Air?

John the Libertarian on April 4, 2011 at 9:10 PM

Butler’s no underdog. If Duke can’t be in the game *curses* I’d like to see the bulldogs take it.

I like Butler, I like their coach, but watching Matt Howard flop on the court is like watching Italian soccer.

I have to hope Butler wins since they just barely squeaked by ODU. It hurts less if your team loses to the champion.

Great games last night. Love watching Adams play. First time I saw her play was this week, and she reminded me of Barkley right away. And last night the announcer mentioned it too. I guess everyone thinks that when they see her play.

MayBee on April 4, 2011 at 9:22 PM

Considering this is his “sport” – that’s amazing.

I hate that he is involved at all in my favorite sport – bugs the crap out of me.

gophergirl on April 4, 2011 at 9:26 PM

Uh oh. Kemba got the jump ball. Game over.

John the Libertarian on April 4, 2011 at 9:27 PM

I hate to be the wet blanket, but statistics do not work like that.

This is a common flaw in thinking about statistics and is corrected in every introduction to stats class. It’s very simple. Flip a coin, what is the probability that you’ll get heads? 50% You get heads. Flip the coin again, what is the probability you get another head? 50%

But if you flip a coin twice, you’ve only got a 25% chance of getting two heads.

Time perspective matters.

You can’t take the probability of a team winning last year, and then multiply it by the probability of a team winning this year and get the probability of a team winning two years in a row.

By the time you calculate the probability of a team winning this year, the probability of last is now 1 because it already happened. And thus the probability of winning two years in a row is equal to the probability of winning this year.

To calculate the probability of winning two years in a row you would have to estimate it two years out. Which requires assumptions about the composition of both this team in it’s second year, but also the composition of all the other teams in the second year.

Which means it’s just not really reasonable to do so.

We use to get family season tickets to ODU when we lived in Virginia Beach. It was so much fun. I sure wish they had won two games. But it was great to have the mid level Colonial Athletic Assoc. have three teams at the dance this year.

Cindy Munford on April 4, 2011 at 9:29 PM

My middle daughter (now a junior at Marquette) almost went to Butler, so … go BUlldogs!

The smaller conferences get better every year, it seems. That’s why it was such a crock for the Big East to have 11 teams in it, nine of which were gone after the first weekend.

I live in Big Ten country and we had seven. We didn’t deserve that many.

Okay how cool is this? Just put on a pair of old shorts, and not only did I find $50 tucked in the pocket, but the shorts still fit!

Tra-la-la, off to buy some beers for the second half.

John the Libertarian on April 4, 2011 at 9:36 PM

I need someone who’s a basketball guru to explain this to me:
It was reported (ESPn I think) that ‘Butler is 10-1 in the last twop Big Dances’. How is that possible? Since they didn’t win either NCAA Tournament they’d have to be somthing – 2, right? Everyone who doesn’t win a single elimination tournament has a record of some # of wins (o to 5) and one loss.

Plus, Butler was elimited in an early round in 2009, and made it to the final against Duke last year.

Can anyone explain this 10-1 comment to me?

They didn’t lose until the championship last year and haven’t yet lost this year.
When they say “last two” they’re counting this one.

Clark Kellog is a moron. Cannot stand it when the announcers are all in for one team. The only thing saving it are Steve Kerr’s occasional interjections of rational commentary. Think we’ll employ the “mute” button in the second half.

varnson on April 4, 2011 at 10:12 PM

U-Conn has 10 fouls and 19 points. Oof. It’s a miracle they are only down 3.
