Lindsey Graham on Koran-burning: “Free speech is a great idea, but we’re in a war”

posted at 4:00 pm on April 3, 2011 by Allahpundit

Skip ahead to 2:05, bearing in mind that this guy might have ended up as Attorney General under President McCain. A few minutes earlier, Harry Reid told Schieffer that Congress will “take a look” at Jones’s act and the ensuing “protests” in Afghanistan, so at a minimum there’ll probably be some sort of congressional resolution of disapproval. Maybe hearings too: Reid wouldn’t commit to that, but he didn’t rule it out. As for Graham, “I wish we could find some way to hold people accountable,” he laments, clearly deflated by the thought that the First Amendment applies even while we’re “at war.” And if you’re not sure what he means by “at war” — well, I’m not either. Are we “at war” only if troops are in the field? No Koran-burning, in other words, until the last U.S. serviceman has left Iraq and Afghanistan (and Libya)? Or are we “at war” as long as Al Qaeda and other anti-American jihadist movements exist, ready and willing to demagogue acts like Jones’s for their own uses? Even if all Islamist outfits in the world were eliminated, wouldn’t Graham want to continue the ban on Koran-burning lest it inspire new jihadist outfits to spring up? There’s no limiting principle to this idea, realistically. It’d end up being his own version of an “emergency law.”

Ironically, though, the more attention Congress devotes to this, the worse they’ll make it. If Reid and Graham were stupid enough to hold hearings (which they almost certainly aren’t), it’d be a galactic clusterfark — a spotlight for Jones, a red alert for civil libertarians, and an offense to a public that’s tired of double standards for religious insults. If nothing else good comes from this incident, though, it’s at least been useful as a window into the mindset of our trusted “ally” Hamid Karzai, who did his level best to earn brownie points with the fanatics among his constituents by demagoging this to the hilt. As voters get set for another debate this summer about whether we should draw down in Afghanistan, make sure that isn’t forgotten.

So…the solution is…we need to burn MORE korans, lots of them, every chance we get. After awhile, the “Muslim street” will realize it’s just the way life is, tire of their slitting throats to no avail, and “get used to it.”

I just finished watching “The Patriot”. The contrast is quite striking vomit-inducing.

I am more and more convinced that what our government needs is a clean sweep. With the exception of a very few newly-elected Representatives and Senators, there is not one individual without whom our Republic would be better off.

Everything needs to change. Everything.

So where did the Mullahs get it wrong in what they were demanding of their flock?

sharrukin on April 3, 2011 at 4:56 PM

Well, let me flip through my PC manual… hmmmmm. Ah, here it is: “The majority of Muslims would not kill someone over burning of a Koran, so we can all peacefully co-exist down at the Starbucks. But then there’s a miniscule, almost-statistically-insignificant few who would nuke NYC over burning of a Koran. Just like, not every Christian goes around blowing up abortion clinics, or something. It’s only when the statistically-insignificant few get The Bomb that we really have something to be afraid of.”

The problem is NOT what the mullahs demanded of their flock, it’s THAT these particular mullahs, those few among the thousands of mullahs on Planet Earth, were so moved to demand it. We must take them down.

In the 60′s we burnt the American to prove we had the right to. In the 70′s and 80′s we burnt Bibles and desecrated religious to prove the constitution gave us the right to. Last week we burnt the Koran to again prove we had the right to – oops maybe we are not as free as we think we are.

erbarker on April 3, 2011 at 5:32 PM

That’s because those who have sworn to uphold the Constitution have no intent to persue enemies of America who are Islamic. There is no War on Terror anymore because Americans don’t have the stomach for it and she has no elected leaders capable of leading on it. Enter Terry Jones, stage right.

Do you actually believe that?

The elections in Algeria, Gaza, Turkey, and Pakistan suggest it is not a minority view, but a majority view.

The polls throughout the Muslim world show large support for Sharia law and a more fundamentalist view of Islam.

Most of course won’t personally kill an infidel but then most Nazi’s didn’t personally kill an allied soldier, or a concentration camp victim.

The problem is NOT what the mullahs demanded of their flock, it’s THAT these particular mullahs, those few among the thousands of mullahs on Planet Earth, were so moved to demand it. We must take them down.

How are we to win a war by appeasing those indistinguishable from the Taliban? When we pull out, what sort of power structure will we leave in place for those poor bastards to live under?

Islam’s greatest strength is its closed circle of brutal control mixed with a whopping unhealthy dollop of self-interest — meaning sanctioned conquest, rape and plunder — and tribal and personal superiority — meaning female domination and the satisfaction of having trembling dhimmis at one’s feet, who must pay an exorbitant tax for the privilege of being eternally humiliated as third class subjects.

Islam’s greatest weakness is that it isn’t capable of surviving in a free and open world. The muslims, of course, know this and this is why they go raving mad at almost anything. A break in the circle anywhere, and Islam is doomed. They literally can’t permit any dissent. To them, leaving Islam, proselytizing Christianity or Judaism, criticizing Islam, and ridiculing Islam must be responded to with death whenever possible. Weakness and appeasement is Islam’s life blood. Multiculturalism, PC, the Left, moral equivalency, the Western press, and giving authority to a “democracy” of dictatorships (the UN) are veritable gifts from Allah to keep the muslims in chains.

One breaks the chains by denying Islam the power to kill, punish and intimidate in the name of Islam. It’s ridiculously easy to do, but requires nerve and strength.

Raving Muslim: “The infidel burned a Koran!”

Infidel, nodding sadly: “Yeah, that was rude. I sympathize.”

Raving Muslim, eyes wide: “He must die! Maybe I’ll kill you, infidel!”

Infidel, revealing his conceal carry holster: “Oh, yeah? You try it, and I’ll personally give you .45 cal lead poisoning. If you threaten me or anyone else again, I’ll do my best to have your butt sent to Guantanamo. By the way, you’re welcome to visit the Synagogue we’re opening down the street. I’m Jewish, by the way.”

Muslim, head exploding: “AH!!!”

Given that the idea of the Koran is for its followers to subjugate or kill all who do not subscribe to the teachings of the prophet, and given that the prescribed subjugations and murders are in fact carried out on a daily basis, I think we can make one tiny exception to the rule that “sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.”

Your remark is a perfect example of how our enemy uses our civility and openness against us. You are right, but you are wrong.

Mr. Reid and Mr. Graham, it is in times of war when we should be putting our efforts into insuring our constitutional rights all the more. Someone yesterday postulated that the Muslims look on the Koran as an Idol. Well many Americans look on our constitution as a divinely inspired piece of work and to alter it to appease the enemy of it is grossly irreverant to those of us who believe in it.

fourdeucer on April 3, 2011 at 6:16 PM

For those with short memories, a guy named Charles Martel demonstrated the way to meet Islam using only Eighth Century techniques. The mnemonic is Battle of Tours.

A little history of the Christian way to treat Muslims would also include Ferdinand and Isabella. And a series of short “meetings” around Tripoli c. 1802.

Giving Muslims their most wished for desire since 732.

BallisticBob on April 3, 2011 at 7:01 PM

I’m talking about here in the US…Yes, I know it’s much worse for gays in radical Muslim nations…but Muslims don’t hold a monopoly on gay hate.

JetBoy on April 3, 2011 at 6:56 PM

So your argument is that there are bad people everywhere so that means… what?

Here’s something to keep in mind.

When you kill a gay in Iran you get a pat on the back, and a nice write up in the local paper, and maybe a civic award from the Iranian cultural ministry.

Here they send you to jail for murder.

So there is that small difference.

You don’t see Christians flying planes into buildings, beheading people on camera or strapping bombs to themselves and self-detonating in crowded areas either.

But apparently that’s what a religion has to do to get respect these days.

I’m a redneck and I don’t give a damn who you sleep with. until I moved a year and a half ago, my next door neighbors was a gay couple. They were probably the best neighbors that I have ever had.

If you aren’t afraid of Muslims, then go to a Muslim country and announce that you are gay. Otherwise, you’re just being ridiculous.

ladyingray on April 3, 2011 at 7:16 PM

How is this creature Graham still in office? He has been a buffoon since he came to Congress back in 1995. He has shown to be a traitor to the patriots of this country and needs to be “kicked to the curb” in the next re-election effort for this boob. South Carolina should be ashamed of this fool.

Where was Graham when the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ, was immersed in a jar of urine and on display in an art museum in New York and elsewhere around the country? Better yet, where were all the members of the Christian faith during this disgusting display? Where were the Jews and the Muslims who should have cried out against desecrating our Lord, Jesus Christ? Has Graham ever attempted to defund the National Endowment for the Arts?

Mark my word…if Christians do not fight this attempt to protect the Koran (and only the Koran) and this attempt to prosecute those who would desecrate the Koran (and only the Koran), then Christians deserve a fate as bad as the fate of the UN workers. I believe God will punish all who claim to be Christians, who will sit quiet while the Koran will be protected at all costs and our Holy Bible becomes irrelevant in the coming years.

Who is it that decides that Lindsey Graham appears on these Sunday squawk shows? He is on at least one of them a week? Is it he, who is such a media whore? Is he supposed to be representing a Republican viewpoint? Who says so? He does more damage with his soundbites than many others in the party.

Let’s get some straight shooters who are knowledgable about the facts on these issues to appear on camera. And keep dweebs like Graham away from the microphones.

As for Graham, he’s a f___ing idiot he’s become.

How many bibles were burned here, Jetboy?

BallisticBob on April 3, 2011 at 7:34 PM

Say, Sen. Graham: aren’t the people in the world able to be their own moral actors so as to NOT kill people when they are merely offended by something?

If you are implying otherwise, then the name for people who are not their own moral actors and simply kill at the slightest offense is: barbarian.

It is bad enough the Left wants to appease barbarism.

It doesn’t help that that Sen. Graham wants to do the same.

I’m just sayin’, you don’t normally see Muslims defacing the Bible, as they hold Jesus and Mary in high regard.

JetBoy on April 3, 2011 at 6:17 PM

JB- you forgot your two sarc tags.

Bibles are shredded if you try to bring them into Saudi Arabia, the root zone of Islam.

And “Jesus” (“Isa”) only exists in a gelded, expurgated sock puppet version in Islam.

A deceitful tool to promote Mohammad and Islam, nothing else.

Remember those sarc tags!

So…the solution is…we need to burn MORE korans, lots of them, every chance we get. After awhile, the “Muslim street” will realize it’s just the way life is, tire of their slitting throats to no avail, and “get used to it.”

BallisticBob on April 3, 2011 at 7:47 PM

The average Arab Muslim on the street seems to be offended by many thing about Americans.

What offends Muslims most is rejection of Mohammed and Allah. A Muslim who will kill over anything as trivial as burning a book is just as likely to kill if you insult his prophet and his god.

So all of the enlightened folk who are tolerant of this “religion” should be careful, should they ever engage in critical thinking about Islam, to remember to keep any doubts about Mohammed’s religion to themselves.

There is no freedom of conscience and no freedom of speech in Islam and until we work up the courage to confront this reality the situation will continue to deteriorate.

Gen. Petraeus is apparently all in favor of this.

Stop criticizing the “Holy” Koran!

profitsbeard on April 3, 2011 at 8:04 PM

I’m sick & tired of hearing that Rev. Terry Jones should be condemned or censored for his Koran burning, and now even the morbid suggestion from this senator that there should be ways to punish him or such action – surely unconstitutional. Graham is being thoughtless here. This was not a act that encourages (in the WWII sense) the Muslim enemy but one that just pissed Muslims off.

During WWII it surely was not illegal to piss off the Nazis. You would not have been arrested because you insulted Adolf Hitler so badly with some action that might possibly cause some German to join up with the SS.

Freedom of expression is too precious to abandon because some Muslim maniacs can get violent over it. Is America the home of the we-don’t-piss-off-could-be-violent idiots?

MadisonConservative on April 3, 2011 at 8:10 PM

Sure, I’m not denying that. But how many cases of murders and torture of homosexuals in the US are at the hands of Muslims…not Matthew Shepherd, or Larry King, or guys like Tyler Clemente from Rutgers who killed himself after fellow students hid that camera in his room.

Hatred of gays goes far beyond simply Muslim extremists.

JetBoy on April 3, 2011 at 6:51 PM

I really, really hope that one day you shake your serious case of playing the victim. Muslim fundamentalists have killed thousands upon thousands in the last 20 years, and in the last 20 years you bring up one murdered homosexual.

In Muslim countries, the government kills gays, not a handful of rednecks(which takes decades to add up). Children are taught in schools to hate gays. In this country, they’re increasingly being taught that it’s a good lifestyle. Wake the f**k up.

MadisonConservative on April 3, 2011 at 8:15 PM
