Intel analyst to CNN host: “You’re just carrying water for Mr. Obama”

posted at 10:12 am on April 1, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

No, this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke, although one could be forgiven for thinking that they’ve landed in Bizarro World in watching this interview of Michael Scheuer on CNN yesterday. Newsbusters has the whole transcript, which you will want to read in full, but one particular exchange had my head swimming — and it had nothing to do with anyone carrying water:

CHETRY: But they’re very careful to say it’s the American-led West. That NATO is now fully taking over the operation.

SCHEUER: Well, that –

CHETRY: Yes, our firepower was used in the beginning, but that this is a coalition that includes Arab states.

SCHEUER: That may fool some Americans. It’s not going to fool the people who sympathize with bin Laden and other Islamists. This is really a U.S.-led operation. And you talk about Arab states that are involved — the Arab states are tyrannies that are hated by their own people. This is — this is a piece of theater set up by Mrs. Clinton and Mr. McCain and the bipartisan group that loves to intervene abroad. In the Muslim world, this is Americans killing Muslims again and it looks like it’s for oil.

CHETRY: I just want to ask. Are you trying to have both ways in saying that, OK, these are tyrannies that hate their own people, well, that’s why we’re helping because in Libya, it was the people that wanted Gadhafi out, that they were tired of it. So, weren’t we then supporting Islamic democracy, I guess you could say, in these countries where they’re tired of totalitarian rule?

SCHEUER: If we were supporting Islamic democracy, that would be one thing. But if you listen to Mrs. Clinton and especially rather crazed Ms. Rice at the U.N., this is all about democracy in a world where democracy is not going to take hold.

It should be noted that Scheuer was no fan of the war in Iraq, either, mainly for the same reasons. But Kiran Chetry’s sudden devotion to “Islamic democracy” is noteworthy, even apart from being an oxymoron. She seems to mean “Arab democracy,” but even that only makes sense if the rebels are some sort of known force for democracy of any sort — say, like the Green Revolution in Iran. No one knows who or what the Libyan rebels represent.

And on that point, there was a lot more reason to depose Saddam Hussein for “Arab democracy.” The Kurds in the north (not Arabs, of course) had already established a stable representative government, and Iraqis both inside and outside of the country had organized a government-in-exile structure that gave us a much clearer indication that democracy was a viable endgame. For all of that, I don’t recall Kiran Chetry defending the Iraq war on behalf of “Islamic democracy,” or Christine Romans, either, despite Saddam Hussein’s arguably more despotic and cruel regime and our twelve-year standoff with Baghdad under his rule.

All of this goes to Scheuer’s point about carrying water — which is probably what embarrassed Romans into terminating the interview.

Frankly, CNN may be carrying the water for Obama, but MSNBC is maintaining the well!

I’m sure the CNN-defenders will be quick to point out that Chetry “infiltrated” their “network” from the evil Faux News.

Ailes probably planted her at CNN, just so she could make them look bad.

I see what you did there. As I recall, the thunderous sound of crickets chirping was deafening during that interlude. Particularly after that beautiful girl named Neda was gurgling blood out of her mouth from being fatally shot in the chest.

Sometimes the right loves what Mr. Scheuer has to say and sometimes he irritates the heck out of them/us, so he’s probably got it right most of the time.

All of this goes to Scheuer’s point about [CNN] carrying water

I was frankly stunned to hear someone actually state the truth.

“Islamic democracy” = oxymoron

Absolutely. You cannot have personal liberty and Sharia Law. The two are now, and will forever be, mutually exclusive.

It was pretty clear from this clip that the dude is no fan of the right or intervention of any kind in Arab nations(barring a direct threat on the US). The reason Newsbusters and Hot Air took note of the exchange is that the CNN hostesses weren’t really conducting an interview as much as defending the Obama Administration from everything the guy said. There’s nothing wrong with challenging his statements, but they weren’t doing that as much as just regurgitating Democrat talking points.

Doughboy on April 1, 2011 at 10:38 AM

“The economy and the war in Libya are two separate issues”

……and the MSM wonders why no one takes them seriously….

How does someone this stupid get a job addressing millions of Americans concerning the news.

…Maybe she should get back with all of her liberal friends and tell them that all their chants about “war bankrupting America” are really “two separate issues”……
….because apparently the White House has a “war funding tree” planted in the back yard.
Go figure… I thought it was our tax dollars and borrowing money from China that was paying for this.

catmman on April 1, 2011 at 10:24 AM

I agree that it isn’t about oil. I think it was all about Obama not being able to stand the thought that the international community would perceive him as a pussycat (only drop the “cat” from that). Seeing as he cares far more what they think of him than his fellow Americans.

But Scheuer has a point: the reasons for this action are both so inscrutably vague, yet simultaneously blatantly laughable (seriously, if “humanitarian effort” is the new litmus, then every action we have taken, including Iraq, or would take, in the middle east is not only justified, but by all rights we should be going to war with Syria, Iran, etc. as well), than it is no wonder the Arabs don’t believe this is anything more than a war to kill Muslims for oil. Why wouldn’t they? The humanitarian excuse is blatant BS, and there’s no other discernible reason, in THEIR opinion (because they don’t have the context we do, i.e. that Obama is a whiny man-child who didn’t want to be embarrassed by the Europeans) it MUST be for oil.

Vyce on April 1, 2011 at 10:45 AM

Michael Scheuer is a bit of a crank but he does seem to be in tune with Al Qaeda’s viewpoint here. Via New Zeal, Al Qaeda’s lifestyle magazine “Inspire” totally enthused about Middle Eastern revolutions. A snippet:

There could be no freeing of Palestine with the presence of the likes of King Abdullah to the East, Hosni Mubarak to the West and al-Saud to the South. Now that Hosni is gone, we heard the Imam of the Friday prayers praying: “O Allah we ask you to allow us to meet in al-Aqsa,” and the millions inTahrir square roared with one voice: Âmîn.

and -

It is our opinion that the revolutions that are shaking the thrones of dictators are good for the Muslims, good for the mujahidin and bad for the imperialists of the West and their henchmen in the Muslim world./We are very optimistic and have great expectations of what is to come.

I just watched it. The first 3 1/2 minutes are pretty good. And Scheurer pretty much said what we’ve been saying for days now. This is gonna come down to 2 scenarios(barring Qaddafi dying from a bomb or bullet or falling anvil): 1) Obama pulls us out of there and we concede defeat or 2) Obama sends in ground troops.

Either one would be disastrous politically, but the question is would Obama be willing to accept the humiliation of Qaddafi emerging victorious or would his pride force him to send in troops?

..she states we are there to “promote democracy by helping to take out Qaddafi….

The UN resolution and statements by Obama are that we are enforcing a “no fly zone” to help “protect civilians”….
……if Chetry is so proud of the Libya mission to “elimanate Qaddafi”…Then maybe she should use her airtime to demand that Obama ACTUALLY SAY THAT REGIME CHANGE IS THE MISSION……

…If we are there to “promote democracy”….can Chetry please explain to us who exactly it is we are “helping” and what kind of “democracy” will they promote once they have control….because her hero Obama sure has not enlightened us on this subject in between his golf outings and trips to the Rio…

I guess you could say, in these countries where they’re tired of totalitarian rule?

You mean like Iran….Darfur….Yemen…..Bahrain….

How ,oh wise one,did Libya make their way to the top of the list for the US to fight for their regime change.

….Libya is not even close to the importance of having regime change in Iran.

Scheuer is no lib, but he’s certainly not a conventional Republican. He’s more of a Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan, John Derbyshire Paleo-Con that believes in a Fortress America stance towards the rest of the world. His foreign policy seems to be that the Middle East is full of a bunch of savages and we should have nothing to do with them except to bomb the hell out of them whenever they make trouble with us. Previous commentators are right, however, his antipathy for the region extends to Israel as well. Like Ron Paul, he’s kind of a nut, but that doesn’t mean he’s always wrong, and I will typically make it a point to listen to what he has to say when he’s on the screen. I caught this live yesterday and had a good laugh on the treadmill at the gym. I’m glad Ed picked it up.

For the life of me, I do not know. Obama has ALREADY tried to say, “well, hey, we’ve already accomplished our part, it’s a NATO operation now….”, but also keeps emphasizing regime change. Which will not happen unless you put boots on the ground.

Simplest answer, he has no idea what he’s doing, and probably himself has no idea what the gameplan is going to be or an exit strategy. Smart power, folks.

Kiran Chetry used to be a smart interviewer when she was on Fox News. Must be the influence of her new bosses over at CNN.

Greta Van Susteren went in the opposite direction, from CNN to Fox News, and she started out doing investigations on murders of pretty girls, but now regularly interviews Rush Limbaugh, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich.

Seems like a TV interviewer needs to follow the politics of the boss (s)he serves…

As Ed pointed out, Scheuer was no fan of the war in Iraq, and tended to be a “loose cannon”, often disagreeing with the rest of the “intel” community, but it would be interesting to hear him in an interview with Greta Van Susteren or Sean Hannity, who don’t “carry water” for Obama.

Thanks for the clarification.

Was waiting for the two CNN women to scream in unison, “But Obama is AWESOME!”

albill on April 1, 2011 at 11:40 AM

The media is carrying the water. I love this. This is how every conservative or anyone with a brain needs to respond to the media. They are just an offshoot of the Democrat party. When people go on these shows they need to confront the media just as they would confront a Democrat because they are on the same side.

JellyToast on April 1, 2011 at 11:42 AM

Well he’s done at CNN.

Thune on April 1, 2011 at 11:42 AM

I agree that it isn’t about oil. I think it was all about Obama not being able to stand the thought that the international community would perceive him as a p!ssy. Seeing as he cares far more what they think of him than his fellow Americans.

It’s not about oil for us, it sure as hell is for the French. And Sarkozy knew that he could triple dog dare Obama and he would stick his tongue to the Libyan flagpole.

What happened to Chetry? I seem to remember a more level-headed woman when she was at Fox.

greggriffith on April 1, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Wrong, she was never level-headed. At Fox News out of the blue she liked to bring up rumors that President George W. Bush used cocaine in his twenties. She was an embarrassment to Fox News.

slickwillie2001 on April 1, 2011 at 12:01 PM

I think Scheuer has a new book out. It is certainly on my list.

Gob on April 1, 2011 at 12:03 PM

Kiran Chetry in that shirt… worth the click.

Her interviewing skills? Not so much.

mankai on April 1, 2011 at 12:14 PM

that saucy hand on her hip is the same language a woman shows when she is outed as being easy.

ted c on April 1, 2011 at 10:23 AM

My eyes were focused on that hip. Guess that it’s true, the cobra was found and put back inside the zoo. The body language was basically, she felt empowered of the “two versus one” scenario. She felt that because it was the two of them talking (over him) that their message would resonate with their viewers w/o caring a bit for their guest who THEY booked for a reaction to the “war that isn’t”.

I didn’t even know she was working at all. I swear! Guess that proves my point…I don’t watch easy chicks on CNN.

ProudPalinFan on April 1, 2011 at 12:14 PM

CHETRY: I just want to ask. Are you trying to have both ways in saying that, OK, these are tyrannies that hate their own people, well, that’s why we’re helping because in Libya, it was the people that wanted Gadhafi out, that they were tired of it. So, weren’t we then supporting Islamic democracy,

The “people” want all of the leadership out across the region….why did Libya become so important??????

…..and so far this help we are giving is having some mixed results:

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/04/01/end-air-combat-role-libya-qaddafi-makes-gains/#ixzz1IHuUtxLy

“Right now, they (the rebels) are more like `guys with guns’ than an organized force and they need help,” Dubick wrote. He is a former commander of U.S. training mission in Iraq and is now a senior fellow at the Institute for the Study of War, a think tank.

Mullen said Qaddafi’s army had lost as much as 25 percent of its firepower, although his ground forces still outnumber the rebels by about 10-to-1.

….25% of it’s firepower knocked out after several weeks of bombardment.
Are you kidding me….and now Obama is pulling back.
Qaddafi did not exactly have any type of a major military power in Libya.I would have expected more than 25% considering the weak horse we are facing.Either most of Qaddafi’s firepower is not something we can take out without civilian causalities or he is doing a good job of hiding it.
Either way…Obama’s line of:”this “military action” will only take a few days????” is about as full of sh!t as “we are not fighting for regime change”

“smart power”….Obama jumping into the middle of a civil war, half a$$ed and without a clear mission(or congressional approval)… then having your allies in the media declare “how you are bringing democracy” borders on insane.
…only in liberal land.

CHETRY: But they’re very careful to say it’s the American-led West. That NATO is now fully taking over the operation.

……even as Obama pulls our planes back…they sit on stand-by in case it gets to bloody and the other “allies” can’t handle it.

More smoke and mirrors coming from the Obama administration.

..they are there…but they are not there…..we will pull back from the lead…but we will stay to take back the lead if necessary.

Is that what Chetry considers “leadership?????”

To attack and then pull back before the job is done.If you are not serious about the mission…then don’t put our Soldier’s lives and our tax dollars into it.

Obama is more concerned about the political ramifications of his actions in Libya than he is about “bringing democracy”…..
………When you put politics first….it always turns out bad…..just look at Vietnam…

Frankly, CNN may be carrying the water for Obama, but MSNBC is maintaining the well! pilamaye on April 1, 2011 at 10:15 AM

Beautiful. And that’s Mika’s boy, little Joe Scarborough, priming the pump.

greggriffith on April 1, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Meh… I was never too impressed with her. I remember seeing her try to fill in for ED Hill on Fox & Friends one morning. Kiran was clearly nervous and stumbling over her words. She was not ready for prime time.

I don’t remember ever seeing her fill in for ED Hill again after that. After that performance, I guess her bosses weren’t too impressed with her either.

UltimateBob on April 1, 2011 at 12:35 PM

Then what about Syria? Iran? Saudi Arabia? Bahrain?

For that matter, North Korea? Cuba? Venezuela?

catmman on April 1, 2011 at 10:24 AM

And what about Massachusetts?

petefrt on April 1, 2011 at 12:40 PM

What’s with the party dress? Did one of the talking heads go directly from the bars to work in the AM?

Blake on April 1, 2011 at 10:44 AM

That’s what I was wondering too.

petefrt on April 1, 2011 at 12:46 PM

Scheuer has this nasty habit of blaming all the problems on Israel. I am surprised he did not do so in this clip. He is not a Repub or Dem, he is sort of a paleocon.

Hilts on April 1, 2011 at 12:49 PM

Obama is just oozing with hypocrisy these days – from the War in Libya, to Drill Brazil Drill! The 2012 commercials are going to write themselves. Please RNC, let them write themselves, then blanket the airwaves. CNN is just doing their best to scream over the truth. Chetry? My guess is she’s just trying to stay employed. But hey, in this economy…….
