Video: Maher goes for the jugular crotch on Palin

posted at 5:37 pm on March 19, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

And of course, Bill Maher’s audience responds with delight over his bon mot (also at RCP):

One might think paying for HBO as a premium cable channel would entitle subscribers to high-quality entertainment selections. But for an hour Friday night, viewers were treated to a little misogynistic locker room humor with the channel’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

On Friday night’s airing of the show, host Bill Maher took a shot at one of the left’s favorite targets, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, by contemplating her reaction to the tragic events that have unfolded in Japan over the past nine days. …

“Did you hear this – Sarah Palin finally heard what happened in Japan and she’s demanding that we invade ‘Tsunami,’” Maher said. “I mean she said, ‘These ‘Tsunamians’ will not get away with this.’ Oh speaking of dumb twats, did you –”

Really? That’s all Maher has? The last time I recall hearing that particular vulgarity about a woman’s genitalia, I was in junior high school. It’s one thing to be crude and vulgar in making a trenchant or interesting point. Tossing out a crude reference to a vagina as a way of demeaning one particular woman betrays an utter lack of a point.  It’s even worse than otherwise in this instance, since Maher didn’t even have anything to criticize about Palin’s response to the crises in Japan; he had to invent something to make her sound stupid, and then call her names for a cheap laugh.  It practically defines the term juvenile, which applies equally to Maher and his audience on this occasion.

Maher has been nothing better than a giggly fratboy for several years now.  It looks like he’s aiming lower these days, in more ways than one.

This is a bit disappointing, Palin gave a major speech in India today and all certain people want to highlight are the disgusting insults hurled at her by a sad twisted little man who is only doing so as an attention getting stunt. Which is pretty much the whole premise of the his show in the first place.

Thanks for the adroit use of the Banhammer, Ed. And for the reminder that politics should never come before family. We’re spoiled by you guys posting so much even on the weekends that it’s easy to forget that y’all deserve to enjoy your own special time with family and friends.

Mea culpa.

Hope you had a great time with your grandchildren.

Doesn’t the left actually get away with assassination “jokes” and not-so-jokey assassination comments, threats, or promises?

Of course they do, and of course they have.

Doesn’t the left get away with racist, bigoted, hate filled, violent, vile jokes attacking people’s race and ethnicity, most especially attacking those who they disagree with, most often when the target is a conservative black, Hispanic, woman, Christians, pro-family, pro-life persons, Tea Partiers, etc.?

Of course they do, and of course they have!

Doesn’t the left quite often fabricated, just make up out of whole cloth, vicious lies, false images of Conservatives, Christians, pro-lifers, Tea Partiers, Israelis, etc.?

Of course they do, and of course they have.

When it comes to downright vicious, virulent, hate filled, dishonest, mean spirited, malicious screeds, lies, innuendo, misogyny, and so on, the left holds the lion’s share, and even holds the deed to that “house.”

Is it any wonder that they, including the likes of Bill Maher, continue to perpetuate their bad behavior, foul language, vicious screeds, and attack campaigns, even those which are rife with violence and threats of violence?

rrpjr, whoever wins the GOP primaries in 2012 is going against an incumbent who may be simultaneously the worst chief executive and best campaigner this country has ever seen, armed with a billion-dollar war chest…

By this logic it is imperative Republicans choose a fighter, someone committed to breaking tired and losing campaign paradigms — certainly not someone with absolutely no history or natural inclination to respond to media or Leftists attacks or proactively define himself rather than be defined. Imperative.

Palin has been the “firstest with the mostest” on every issue confronting conservatives and the country and in taking on Obama and the media. Romney hasn’t even come close.

Further, I don’t know on what basis you contend Palin has an inferior organization. Perhaps there are aspects to this I don’t understand. Even so, traditional “organization” will mean far less this cycle than ever before. It may even be an impediment. The candidate who proves agile and savvy with new media and far-reaching and inventive in her/his forms of communications – and of course has exceptional communication skills — will carry the day. No one has proved more adept at this than Palin.

But above all will be the adeptness at putting others on the defensive. This is critical. It is something Republicans have failed at since Reagan. Romney, based on 2008, is a signal failure at this. He wasn’t even skilled defensively, allowing McCain and Huckabee to tag-team him mercilessly. Palin plays offense, not defense (and turns defense into offense).

This is what will matter in 2012 — not some vaunted “organization” with layers of staff and ranks of apparatchiks drafting and vetting and debating PR releases.

rrpjr on March 20, 2011 at 1:40 AM

I’d like to think that I’d refrain from commenting on a speech until I have time to see it or read it, and I’d like to think you’d prefer that as well. I’ll try to hit that in the morning and write something about it then, but for now I’m going to get back to spending time with my family on my weekend.

Ed Morrissey on March 19, 2011 at 8:42 PM

Thanks Ed and I hope you enjoyed spending time with your family on Saturday. I had a “down day” too, with the politics. I am now going to go off and see Sarah’s speech and I look forward to the comment thread on Sunday.

The “Tsunamians” joke was funny… but the “dumb twat” comment made him look sad. Really, Bill?
You wanna joke and make fun of Bush and Palin, go ahead. Everyone knows where you stand. But at least be funny. If you can’t be funny, it’s over. Get off the stage. Boooooo

Bill Maher should be fired by HBO. It was an off color “dumb woman” series of non-jokes that had no serious political content. Do that against a woamn with liberal politics, and there would be demands for Maher’s head.

rrpjr and Naturally Curly: Palin’s blood libel comment was tin-eared because the term denotes a very specific charge traditionally made against Jews by anti-semites… troyriser_gopftw on March 19, 2011 at 11:04 PM

Who decides? The media – the ones who made and/or helped broadcast the vile and absurd charges to begin with? I think this is what it boils down to – an unconscious fear-based willingness to allow the media to decide and dictate what is the appropriate response to their own slander. It is entirely ceding the field to the media.
rrpjr on March 19, 2011 at 11:49 PM

Sorry, troyriser, I’m still with rrpjr on this. Sarah Palin is playing by her own rules, and she plays to WIN. She’s not about to let the lies the media promotes about her fester or go unanswered. Furthermore, regarding Kathy Griffin, that skank was publicly attacking Palin’s seventeen-year-old daughter. Palin said (paraphrasing), “If you want to attack me, come on up to Alaska and attack me. But leave my daughter alone.” I respect her for that, and I think many other mothers and fathers out there will feel the same.

Now where is the post about that speech Palin gave in India? Guess that’s not as newsworthy as the all important gutter sniping.

One he was trying to capitalize on Palin’s remarks today in India about it being a time for a woman to be POTUS. The ABP sexists can’t herlp themselves over this comment.

unseen on March 19, 2011 at 9:23 PM

I’m not ABP, but I can’t stand that way of thinking. It is not “time” for a woman to be president, any more than it was “time” for a black man to be president. This group identity nonsense has to stop. It’s disappointing to see conservatives engaging in it.

That was from the Great Purge when five got it in one banhammer.

rplat on March 20, 2011 at 9:31 AM

Guys like Maher have always hated women like Palin. When you are a semi-illiterate no talent punk like Maher, most women will either ignore or reject scum like he is for obvious reasons. His only talent is hatemongering because he doesn’t have the intelligence to do anything otherwise.

volsense on March 20, 2011 at 10:10 AM

One very useful thing that Palin has done is serve to highlight the hypocrisy on the left. Let someone take off on Michelle in a similar manner and listen to the howls. The rules of PC only apply if the object of the criticism is one of the anointed. remember the derisive comments about Rice when she became the first black women secretary of state versus those about Albright.

pgrossjr on March 20, 2011 at 10:20 AM

The last time I recall hearing that particular vulgarity … I was in junior high school.

Wonder if the audience was old enough to know the phrase? Figure young people would confuse the term with ‘twit’ as in ‘twitter’.

At the point you have to fabricate your enemy, in order to crticize them, you have lost the war.

They didn’t have Junior High Schools when I was young, but I remember the phrase ‘Your mother wears army boots’. Back then, no one’s mother wore army boots, so the phrase was taken as the equivalent of ‘So There’, the last gasp insult of a loser, who was too afraid to sling the real dirt, in case they actually had to put up or shut up

For young people, ‘Put up’ meant ‘put up your fists’

In such a contest, I think Palin would win, because her arms are longer and she could put one hand on Mr. Big Shot’s very high forehead and he could never reach her.

A bantam vs a good egg layer. No contest

For the young, a bantam is a very small chicken

pgrossjr on March 20, 2011 at 10:20 AM

Does this not highlight the mysogyny of the left? They heap meaningless praise upon incompetent women for showing up, but when a woman excels (Rice, Palin, Bachmann, etc.) they slash and tear at them and seek to burn them to ashes. Granted the achieving women are on the right and doubly targeted, but that is not their fault. If the left ever saw excellence in women on their side, they’d do the same thing. Lucky for them they don’t have to worry about that quandary.

FireBlogger on March 20, 2011 at 9:05 PM

Thing is, I am a staunch Palin supporter. I happen to think she’s got the stuff to be president, and very badly want her to go for it and win, but at this point don’t believe she has the organization to pull it off. On the flip-side of that coin, Mitt Romney has a superb organization–the result, no doubt, of his long experience as an private and public sector executive and entrepreneur, but think RomneyCare is a big enough albatross to sink any campaign before it starts. In short, Palin has strong base support but poor organization. Romney has great organization but poor base support.

Hmmm.

fossten on March 20, 2011 at 11:22 PM

I didn’t get that “concern” from troyriser’s comment. If Gov. Palin doesn’t have a strong organization *at the moment*, that’s not fatal — it’s just a problem that needs to be fixed, and can be, and probably will be. I think troyriser was wishing that Gov. Palin had Gov. Romney’s staff, or that the staff she has now had his staff’s experience and discipline. And all I can say is that once her campaign gets rolling, she is certain to have a ton of volunteers, many of whom will be working for a Presidential candidate for the first time in their lives, and hopefully they can make up for their relative lack of experience with energy and enthusiasm. Having a strong base counts for a heck of a lot.
