GMA to Rebecca Black: Let’s talk about how much people hate your song

posted at 9:53 pm on March 18, 2011 by Allahpundit

Good lord. I haven’t watched torture like this since Marty DiBergi read Spinal Tap that review of “Shark Sandwich.”

They’ve got America’s new “it” girl, the biggest pop star in the country, sitting right in front of them, and all ABC wants to know is how painful those painful, painful criticisms are? I say again: Good lord.

After a smug intro, Good Morning America’s Andrea Canning embodied a real life mean girl when she stared down the bright eyed eighth grader. The reporter smirked as she repeated the criticisms of Black’s online detractors: “This is the worst song I have ever heard in my life, even deaf people are complaining.” “I hate her voice, it’s going to be stuck in my head for life.”

“Do you think you’re a good singer?” Canning icily asks after inviting Black to perform the national anthem on command (it was surprisingly good and made me question why Friday was so outrageously autotuned in the first place). “I’m not the worst singer,” she replied, unshaken by the mocking tone of her interviewer. “I think I have talent on some level.”…

Canning … is a 38-year-old woman who bullied an eighth grader on national TV.

They should have sent Tapper to handle this one. Tough, yet fair. Sample question: “What about the ‘cereal’ lyric? Any second thoughts?”

The song, incidentally, is now number 31 with a bullet on iTunes. Next stop, the top 20. And if you think this marks the end of our recent binge of insanely viral videos involving teens, guess again. Monday shall be a glorious day indeed, my friends.

Eighth graders, dude.

Caper29 on March 18, 2011 at 10:01 PM

Andrea Canning — last seen impersonating a deer in the headlights when Charlie Sheen blew cigarette smoke at her through his nostrils — should have asked Rebecca “So, how does it feel to be treated the way we in the MSM treat Sarah Palin?”

As I tweeted earlier, I don’t get what the backlash is about. “Friday” is no worse or better than most of the crap on the charts nowadays. Is the problem that Rebecca doesn’t dress like a slut (Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera), dance like a stripper (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Shakira) or sing about getting sloppy drunk (Far East Movement, Ke$ha)? Has innocent fun become such an anomaly that kids can’t handle it when they see it?

L.N. Smithee on March 18, 2011 at 10:02 PM

I was just looking at an “Ark Music” YouTube big celebration party. It is two black guys who for 2-3 or 4 thousand dollars will take your kid and put them in a music video at let them sing at an “event”.

They then intend to basically SPAM the videos on YouTube, (and HotAir), until the singers are household names. The more irritating the more memorable. Rebecca Black is pretty but her end result is no worse that 15-20 of their “acts”. May Allah Pundit never learn who “CJ Fam” is.

Thir. Teen.

I would sooner kill myself than allow my creative endeavors from age 13 be disseminated.

The only thing she should be ashamed of is having access to the internet.

The interviewer should be treated like 38 year old women are customarily treated in Canning and Black’s mutual occupation. Gone.

HitNRun on March 18, 2011 at 10:22 PM

Didn’t see anything wrong with the interview. Icily? Nah. She presented the bad comments and asked some pointed questions. She had to ask since so many people are getting ridiculously bent out of shape over bubblegum. And fer cryin’ out loud, the girl’s 13, not 8.

I thought Rebecca handled the interview very well. Not many 13 year olds would have done that well. She seems to have figured out haters gonna hate. Great. Move on. Mom and Dad should be proud of her.

hboulware on March 18, 2011 at 10:22 PM

Hey, Good Morning America… you should interview yourself and ask if you really are journalists. Like ask yourself:
“What was the biggest lie you ever told?”
“What innocent person’s life was the easiest for you to destroy?”
“Do you sleep at night knowing fewer and fewer people are watching you?”
“Do you care that more and more Americans really hate you?”

It’s just a freaking music video. It’s an innocent cheesy song! Good Lord!

sharrukin on March 18, 2011 at 10:41 PM

As bad as the song was, the GMA interview was far worse

and it was conducted by a highly paid network “professional”!!!

Interestingly, every single negative comment about the song applies equally to the GMA interview.

The girl was having fun, and has nothing to apologize for.

On the other hand, the GMA interviewer should give the network its money back and resign.

The song IS the worst song ever because:

–It has no structure.

–It has no point.

–It has no craftsmanship.

–It has the most banal, insipid, obvious lyrics ever.

There are no similes, no metaphors, no poetry, no allusions, no tension, no conflict, no love, no passion, no humor, no story–in short, there is no humanity in this song.

Please make it stop!!!!

My point was:

Composing a trite, repetitious, and annoying work is excusable for an inexperienced teenager who does it for her own enjoyment, but not for a (supposedly) experienced interviewer who does it for money…and who supposedly knows better.

A decent interviewer could have made an interesting and uplifting story out of the same facts by conducting a more intelligent interview of the girl.

the msm will do puff pieces on the lowest pol in the world, but their fangs come out with a girl. that is punching down consderiably

but the truth is the vid shows that with a modest amount of talent you can make a vid that is really kind of cute, and catchy….and Kanye West can’t sing anyway

I’d ask what inspired her to make the video, how she did it, who helped, what she thinks about all of the attention, what she learned, and what she’s going to do next. I certainly wouldn’t waste any time rubbing the kids nose in the fact that her first video wasn’t a polished, instant top 40 hit.

The interviewer is like the idiot who corners a widow at her husband’s funeral, sticks a microphone in her face, and asks over and over again exactly how bad the widow feels. This is not informative or entertaining. The term for this kind of journalism is “muckraking”. (But note that the original “muckrakers” were actually trying to accomplish something, which makes them far better than the interviewer in this piece).

Still chuckling over the Obama O’Reilly reference. Gotta save this thread to my favorites.

Do you not get the ONLY reason why this young girl is being interviewed on national television because her song got widely panned on the internet…..and you want the interviewer to ask “Oh what are going to do next?” That makes absolutely NO sense.

NO sense.

You’re the expert and obtuse.

The willingly obtuse are the worst.

LOL! You want a reporter to ask a 13 year old girl who has a song about waking up on Friday and eating cereal, “What inspires you?” LOL! THAT IS HILARIOUS!
