Hillary: Yeah, I’m going to pass on a second term as Secretary of State

posted at 5:55 pm on March 16, 2011 by Allahpundit

Wouldn’t you if you were her? What could she possibly accomplish in a second term if she stayed? The crucible for U.S. diplomacy over the next few years will, as usual, be the Middle East, yet American influence there has never been lower. Iran will build its bomb come what may. The Saudis and their Sunni clients will crush any opposition going forward, having learned from Mubarak’s demise and Qaddafi’s survival that friendly relations with Washington is momentarily more of a liability than an asset. Obama’s dealings with Israel have been frosty practically since day one and are likely to stay that way, so there’s no peace deal with the Palestinians in the offing anytime soon. Which means State’s agenda in the region circa 2013 will be … what? Shepherding Egypt towards liberalization? That’s a dubious possibility to begin with, but even if there’s a chance of making it happen, Hillary Clinton is almost uniquely poorly positioned to oversee it.

So, like I say, why stick around? They can make any time-serving functionary SoS to go sit in dreary six-party meetings with North Korea or get jerked around by Iran in discussions about nuclear “energy.” Frankly, she’s a sport for sticking it out as long as she has. What a horribly useless job it’s become.

This isn’t surprising that she plans to leave – what would be interesting however is what plans (if any) she has post-SOS. I don’t believe that she’ll run for POTUS again but this may be signal that she thinks that Obama’s chances for second term are less than even. Then again, maybe she’s just tired of all the BS and longs to spend the $90MM she and Bill have amassed.

She’s older, and seems to know better who she is, what she wants, where she’s going. And it’s not to the White House. She’s 63. I think she’s done with pursuing her dreams of remaking the country based on her beloved liberal image of what it could be. The coke-bottled glasses, fighter, activist, militant feminist that was Hillary is gone. Maybe now she sees what a far-left agenda can do to the country. Whatever. Long live Hillary.

Frankly, she’s a sport for sticking it out as long as she has. What a horribly useless job it’s become.

She took the gig to remain relevant after losing the Presidency. And sadly it’s improved her standing amongst the electorate. I guarantee you if you ask the American people why they think she’s done a good job as SoS, 99% of them couldn’t give you a coherent answer, but regardless, that’s how they feel.

Her problem is she can’t run for President until 2016. She’ll be pushing 70 which means she’ll look even worse than she does now and she’ll have to deal with the age question which was a major hurdle for McCain.

Doughboy on March 16, 2011 at 6:30 PM

Hmmm, I was off by 6 weeks with an official “No 2nd Term SoS” from Hillary.

Timing is everything with the Clinton Machine.

Pounce when the chit is hitting the foreign fan, while signaling “I dont agree with a do nothing President, I am more Hawkish – but cannot say that, wink, wink”

I am 50/50 on Obama even getting the nod in 2012 – and also believe there is a reason why Dems are demanding a Rep front runner to slay (50+ polls and counting) while Hillary rarely appears in polls, and its not because “she would never run against Obama” – but just the opposite.

The Clintons have been in bed with Dem pollsters for 20+ years… and it didnt just evaporate in 2 years.

Add in Bill Clintons recent No Fly Zone comments…

Brilliant actually. The strategy, not the people.

Odie1941 on March 16, 2011 at 6:32 PM

One, there won’t BE a second Obama term, and two, I doubt she runs.

onlineanalyst on March 16, 2011 at 7:30 PM

Mrs. Clinton does look like she’s been dipping her beak a bit too much, doesn’t she?

Unrelated to that but, probably related to her future plans, Mr. Obama may not run for a second term.

Here’s a thought experiment. It is virtually certain that the disqualifying truth about Mr. Obama’s background has been established conclusively on a multi-documentary basis but not yet disclosed. The reasoning necessary to ignore these facts and to accept his eligibility when announced to the public would be so thin as to create greater legitimacy problems in the nation’s future and is therefore too high a price to pay. Moreover, Mr. Obama will not be able to conclusively and successfully face vetting in states that now have such a pre-ballot requirement. Health may be cited as the reason for his withdrawal but the truth is far different.

The wild card is if he doesn’t fold and decides to play a game of chicken to secure another term. What happens when the truth inevitably comes to light? Leaving out possible but unlikely Congressional reaction, if it becomes clear that he is going to brazen it out then the Supreme Court is confronted with an historically enormous issue in the upcoming months and no good choices. Key options include: 1.) ignore his ineligibility, sign on to the fraud for the “greater good”, hope for the best and count on a complicit MSM to hide, denigrate and suppress the truth successfully. Caveat, it is longer clear that the MSM has the control necessary to pull this off; 2.) wait to decide his status in the heat of the inevitable post-election Electoral College challenges. This would make Bush v Gore look like a Sunday picnic; or, 3.) signal an intent through appropriate private channels to hear one of the current eligibility challenges and in so doing create a silent crisis in which a deal to allow Mr. Obama’s exit could be brokered by the unlikely team of Justices Alito, Kagan, and Sotomayor. This either results in a private deal for his departure or failing that, they bite the bullet and render the ineligibility decision as early as practically possible but well before the Democratic convention. Any version that does not result in Mr. Obama withdrawing voluntarily is likely to provoke extreme social and political instability in the country up to the possibility of de facto civil war.

“Fore!”

After Hillary took the job, little Bammie appointed his illegal Czars to handle foreign affairs in all of the world’s hotspots, taking authority away from the Secretary of State office while not saving her from blame for screwups. Bammie also appointed one of Hillary’s arch-enemies, Susan Rice, to the UN.

Of course she doesn’t want to go through that again. A better question is, -now that the terms are known, who would ever want to replace her?

slickwillie2001 on March 16, 2011 at 7:47 PM

Omaha Conservative, what’s with all of the sexist–and frankly, even perverted–comments about Hillary calling her, “shrill”, “ugly”, “wrinkled”, “an old hag”, and then being gross enough to discuss her “libido”?

Look, you can dislike the woman’s politics without using offensive, sexist language, as well as personal attacks, when discussing her policies. (That’s what the Left does, remember?)

Hillary is 63 years old and looks better than the vast majority of 63 year old women that I know. (Oh, and I’m sure that you look just like Brad Pitt, right?)

There is plenty to criticize about Hillary without calling her “a wrinkled, old hag”. (Oh, and you too will get old someday.) Show a little class and leave her looks out of it.
