Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 15, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

We got a number of e-mails complaining about Barack Obama’s golf outing on Sunday in the middle of crises in Japan, Libya, and on Capitol Hill, where the federal budget due last October still hasn’t received any Presidential attention.  Good news, readers — the White House has heard your complaints, and we can guarantee next weekend that you won’t find Obama on the links.  Instead, he plans on, er, heading to Rio for some public adulation (via the Weasel Zippers):

President Barack Obama will take his first official trip to Brazil this weekend where he will speak in the popular Cinelandia Square in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

The Obama family will also take in the sights in Rio. A trip to Corcovado mountain, where the Christ the Redeemer statue stands (France gave us Lady Liberty, gave Brazil Jesus) is supposedly on the itinerary. What trip to Rio would be complete without it?

As the nuclear situation in Japan hits a nightmare scenario, as freedom fighters in Libya get annihilated, and as the continuing resolution funding the US government runs out and the government possibly shuts down, Obama will head for the carnivale in Rio.  What better way to show leadership than to run out of town when the money stops, and to go to Brazil for a hero’s welcome while Europe wonders when America will decide to engage on North Africa?

Can’t a man just eat his churrasco?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

As the nuclear situation in Japan hits a nightmare scenario, as freedom fighters in Libya get annihilated, and as the continuing resolution funding the US government runs out and the government possibly shuts down, Obama will head for the carnivale in Rio.

I guess we are merely presuming that this person should involve himself in such matters. I mean look, it doesn’t affect him directly insofar as the countenance of Barack Obama should be darkened by such trivial matters. Japan, Libya, resolutions—eh, that’s just the fray…and remember, he’s above all that./

ted c on March 15, 2011 at 8:13 AM

I’m pretty much at the point where I want him out of the country as often as possible, so I would actually consider this the rare thing he’s doing right. Let the adults handle governing the country, please.

mais que nada

The Portuguese or Spanish didn’t look right to me so I looked it up;
per Wikipedia: “Mas que Nada” is a song written and originally performed by Jorge Ben in 1963, which in a later cover version became the signature song of Sérgio Mendes… Colloquially [it means:] “more than anything.” In Brazilian Portuguese slang, mas que nada (literally, “but, that [is] nothing”) means “come on,” “no way,” or “Yeah, right!” This is sometimes confused with the Latin-American Spanish más que nada (literally “better than nothing”), meaning “mainly” or “principally”; though in more literary Spanish, “mas que nada” (note the omission of the accent, which changes “más” (more) to “mas” (but)) would have the same literal meaning as the Portuguese. In many recordings, the title song is spelled “Mais que nada”.
