Obama’s incredible lack of leadership
posted at 4:00 pm on March 12, 2011 by Bruce McQuain
John Hinderaker at Powerline hits on something I’ve been saying for quite some time about the man in the White House:
Last night Col. Ralph Peters was on Bill O’Reilly’s show, talking about Libya. Peters thinks we should act on behalf of the rebels there, but he expressed skepticism that President Obama will ever do anything. “Obama loves the idea of being President,” Peters said, “but he can’t make a decision.”
I think there is a lot of truth to that, even in domestic policy, where Obama has passively deferred to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi on all legislative matters. One can debate whether action is appropriate in Libya or not, but Peters is certainly right when it comes to foreign policy–it is a safe bet that Obama will do nothing, because doing something would require a decision.
Now it just so happens that I think we ought to stay out of Libya, so this is a stopped clock moment for me. I essentially agree with Obama’s non-decision.
However, to the larger point. I agree with Peters completely when he says “Obama loves the idea of President, but he can’t make a decision”. I might have said it a little differently. Obama loves the idea of being President and the trappings and perks. What he doesn’t like is the job.
I think that should be abundantly clear to anyone who has closely observed the man and taken a look at his background. I always remember the words of the managing editor of the Harvard Law Review who said that Obama loved the title of Editor of the Law Review, but he didn’t want to do the work. The managing editor said he rarely saw him except when it was to glad hand or take credit (and praise) for what was being done. Additionally, Obama never wrote a thing for the review during his tenure, something almost unheard of.
In all cases, his problems are leadership problems. He’s simply not a leader. He has no idea how to be a leader. But that doesn’t keep him from wanting leadership roles that offer him prestige, perks and pleasure derived from simply from being in the position.
The reason Obama can’t make a decision is he can’t reason like a leader must. He has no experience. And he doesn’t understand the decision making process as practiced by a leader. He’s never really had to make leadership decisions. So he simply tries to avoid making them. One way he does it is to ignore the problem. Another way he does this is to appoint commissions and panels concerning problems the country faces in order to defer the problem (and decision). He also like to defer to the “international community” on foreign policy or the Democratic leadership in the legislature on domestic things. Again, the avoidance of decision making.
And, in the end, he lets them make the decisions for him and then he jumps on the bandwagon with a speech full of rhetoric about how they (whichever party he is deferring to on whatever issue) have listened to him and decided on a course much like he recommended. Or something like that.
Even the Democrats are noticing how poor a leader he is. They’ve been hollering for weeks, some of them very vocally, that he needs to step up and show some leadership in the budget process. To this point he’s done much of nothing. Today he gave a press conference on energy because gas prices have increased. Essentially his line of argument, concerning domestic oil, is we’re doing fine and we shouldn’t worry.
And where has he decided to try to take a little leadership?
School bullying.
Umhmmm. That boiling, roiling top tier controversy that threatens to tear the world apart. On the turmoil in the Middle East, yeah, uh, not so much. France is doing just fine and besides, Hillary will be by to see you soon.
Instead of a leader, we’re stuck with this:
Mr. Obama has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China. As one official put it, “No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao’s words in Tahrir Square.”
Amazing. “Easier”. See Peters’ words above.
I say we cut him loose in 2012 and let him take the “hope and change” show to China to make his case. They’ll be bankrupt inside of 2 years.

It’s probably not significant. But I recall someone with Harvard connections telling me back in 2007 when Obama was running that President of the Law Review was more a political/fundraising position than editorial.

I think the only shows to have Cashill on are Rusty, “Quinn & Rose” (one of the best shows!) and Cunningham.

That certainly would be consistent with him not having done any work on the review and not having written anything to be published.

I set my DVR for the Obama show tonite on CSPAN 2 and noticed that later on this evening, there is another hour long show discussing the Obama roots in Kenya. Set that one for the DVR, too.

I believe that long-term one of the effects of the Bamster’s presentcy will be a serious hit to the reputation of Harvard Law, and the Ivy League in general. During some future presidency, those responsible should be brought into a congressional hearing and asked how the h little Bammie ever got himself a law degree.

Deconstructing Obama Book TV Debut

Obama Book-TV DebutMarch 11, 2011
Huge thanks to Herb Meyer for his swell review in yesterday’s American Thinker and my deep appreciation for those readers who commented so favorably.
From the beginning the effort to get the truth about President Obama has been a collaborative one, aided greatly by AT’s publisher Thomas Lifson and by many of the readers. We take the effort one more step on Sunday morning at 10 AM Eastern when C-SPAN II premieres my presentation for its worthy Book-TV program.
This was recorded three weeks ago at the Kansas City Public Library despite efforts by the city’s left wing alternative paper, the Pitch, to stop the presentation on the predictable grounds of racism. So much for the left’s commitment to free speech. More than 300 people were in attendance.
The beauty of Book-TV is that it invades the homes of people who otherwise screen out any information generated in the right half of the blogosphere. I can write their emails of outrage in advance.
The 7 PM showing on Saturday March 12 has been bumped back to 7 PM on March 19 to accommodate a special tribute to the late David Broder.

New Republic has seen the light. An article today by Leon Wieseltier lets him have it, full bore: “Barack Obama’s policy toward the Libyan struggle for freedom is no longer a muddle. It is now a disgrace.”
Bruce has got most of it right, I believe, about him loving the perks but not the works of leadership. I submit there is one more motivation at play: Obama really, truly thinks he’s king of the world, Leonardo Dicaprio’s claims notwithstanding. All academic liberals believe they know everything about everything … or at least, everything that matters. (They’ll admit with a sneer to knowing nothing about NASCAR.)
Trouble is, academics know really only one thing: their subject area. And that is tainted by thirty years of post-modern thinking.
Academic liberals are on the threshold of a long, dark winter. With the election of Obama the veil has been lifted and we see them — starting with the king himself — as weak, sniveling imposters.
MaxMBJ on March 12, 2011 at 7:07 PM
Excellent piece. A lot of disparate threads are pulled together here to give us a cohesive, clear view of what passes for Obama’s character.
It’s amazing to me that the MSM can keep covering for a guy who is so obviously in over his head. I’m sure there must be some self-identified elites who are competent at what they do, but Obama is going to destroy “elite” credibility for good with the hash he’s made of the job.

What did you expect, elect a man that has never had a job except as a Community Agitator and trouble maker. you really think he has any idea about Leadership? Obama could not lead a thirsty heard of cattle to water if he could see it. His most important contribution to the World is when he is 80 and dies from old age the worms will return him to the earth, in 20,000,000 he will resurface as a component of OIL.

Of all the programs on the CSPAN2 schedule for today, the one they chose to preempt for a David Broder interview from 1996 is the anti-Bamster book. Curious.
slickwillie2001 on March 12, 2011 at 7:47 PM
CSPAN would preempt Deconstructing Obama to cover a chicken crossing the road. I can’t imagine how that book even got on the schedule.
petefrt on March 12, 2011 at 7:53 PM
I think he went “risk free” after he got Obamacare passed…
He thinks his “legacy” is cemented in history.
The thing with a Liberal their ideology and instincts fight ffor brain cells vrs. common sense…..and since its a 2 vrs 1 battle, common sense for them is a lost cause.
sbark on March 12, 2011 at 8:07 PM
It’s not that he doesn’t like the job, he just has no clue how to do it.
chewmeister on March 12, 2011 at 8:15 PM
I do not find his lack of leadership incredible. We know this from the time he started running in 2008. He thought this will be another thing he could jive his way through, like he had all this life (along with help from some white guilt government program not to be named in HotAir)
bayview on March 12, 2011 at 8:15 PM
OT: Shouldn’t the Whitehouse have filed something about Vinson’s ruling by now? They had 7 days. I lost track but that isn’t very long. Are they just ignoring Vinson again?
petunia on March 12, 2011 at 8:23 PM
Don’t be precipitous. Check to see what’s on TOTUS tonight. I expect something embarrassingly weak but delivered with a stern Mussolini style upward chin thrust and an odd end-of-sentence emphasis (by the way, where in the US is English spoken that way, Indonesia? Oops!). That’s our guy! Have a nice day.
Mason on March 12, 2011 at 8:54 PM
I agree with Obama’s approach to Libya and I like his non-action towards North Korea. Lil’ Kim loves nothing more than getting the US to react. Ignoring him is just the ticket.
His blowing off the Iranian opposition however, was inexcusable.
rickyricardo on March 12, 2011 at 8:57 PM
Well ya, all true, but nobody, and I mean NOBODY can vote present like our President
Amendment X on March 12, 2011 at 9:21 PM
All Obama has done is said Kaddafi is illegitimate. That’s a tiny, tiny step. By the way … since Obama’s father was already married when he married his mother, that makes that marriage unlawful, which means Obama is illegitimate too. Calling someone illegitimate means very little. Action is needed.
Paul-Cincy on March 12, 2011 at 9:31 PM
I wonder how the MSM feels about all of this. Let’s face it, if it wasn’t for them, this guy wouldn’t have been nominated, let along elected. It seems that, every time they’ve had a Democrat in office lately, they’ve had to find a way to cover-up for their shortcomings or character flaws. Let’s face it, they’re really good at it, but I’m sure some of them would like to just return to distorting the truth in favor of the Democrats.
bflat879 on March 12, 2011 at 9:33 PM
Jack Cashill alluded to how the so-called “respectable” Conservative media will NOT have him on their shows to promote his book “Deconstructing Obama”. When he spoke about a so-called talk-show pithily turning him down saying “We stay away from those stories”, I thought it was prolly Laura Ingraham.
After listening to the above link, I am more convinced it was her.
Yet she’ll have on Darrell Issa, Grover Norquist and Pat Buchanan.
I wish Raymond Arroyo would permanently host her show.
Yeah, a great conservative some cons like to bash is correctamundo again. Wish others only knew how much.

There is very convincing evidence that Barack Obama Sr. is NOT even the dad of Zero. (Maybe that is why Zero is so cold to his supposed African kin.
So the so-called Kenya birth goes kaputt.
The *maybe* truth is even more troubling than that. Frank Marshall Davis is dear, old Dad. Seems like the family Dunham asked a fellow student to help their daughter out of an embarrassing situation…in name only.
Nothing has been proven, but what a convincing and probable thesis it is!

Why?
This is a Libyan problem. At best we should encourage the Saudi’ to arm the rebels. It should end there.
Americans are sick and tired of throwing our money away on foreign adventures.
Instead of drumming up hysteria regarding issues overseas perhaps the Republicans can start peeling back Obama’s handywork at home.
rickyricardo on March 12, 2011 at 10:11 PM
Pretty much sums it up. And as for being leader of China, yeah, I can see that. It’s so much easier just making edicts you know will be carried out, and being able to eliminate your opposition than having to deal with criticism, negotiations, legislation and public opinion.
Less that two years to go.

Most people wouldn’t survive the trip from Specialist to Staff Sergeant.
I find myself struggling to survive the trip with a full year as a buck sergeant in between.
Our current President went from voting Present as a policy to the most powerful executive official on the planet in less than a year. In my person opinion, his Columbia education and amassed brainpower hasn’t figure it out yet.

Where else would they go? You can’t expect them to break the weld and shed their kneepads now, can you? They are only two years into an eight-year transformation and they are determined to see it out. Even silence would be more honest than what they’re doing, but silence is not an option, so they just keep beating that ragged drum.
