Video: Obama somehow under the impression that we’re tightening the noose on Qaddafi
posted at 9:46 pm on March 11, 2011 by Allahpundit
A comforting thought. If only it weren’t belied by an entire week’s worth of news. This is the sort of thing you’d say if NATO-armed rebels were advancing west and closing in on Qaddafi’s hideout in Tripoli. Instead, he’s talking about sanctions and the endless dithering happening among western powers on whether to intervene, which is transparently nothing more than procrastination to see what happens with this recent Qaddafi offensive. In fact, Obama himself admits in the clip that the economic “noose” might not be doing much strangling:
Obama acknowledged that he remains “absolutely” concerned that Qaddafi could, via his military muscle, find a way to remain in power. “I think that’s why it’s so important for us not to stop where we are, but to continue to find options that will add additional pressure, including sending a clear message to those around Qaddafi that the world is watching and we’re paying attention, and that there have been referrals to the International Criminal Court,” he said. “There’s no doubt that I am concerned about it.”
“Qaddafi has a stash of weapons,” Obama continued. “He not only has some troops that remain loyal to him, but there have been reports that he’s also been hiring mercenaries. Even with the financial freeze that we’ve imposed, he still has some assets. The rebel groups are just now getting organized. And so we’re going to have to continue to apply pressure, and that’s why I say we have not taken any options off the table at this point.”
So they’re going to “continue to apply pressure,” even though there’s no compelling reason to believe Qaddafi can’t go on bankrolling massacres for weeks or months, the sanctions notwithstanding. In truth, the White House is looking for reasons not to intervene because it’s unpopular with the public and because, as J.E. Dyer explained earlier, it probably won’t do much good, but Obama can’t say that outright because it makes him look (even more) powerless in the face of degenerate brutality. So instead we’re “tightening the noose,” theoretically choking Qaddafi off even though not only has he now utterly crushed the rebels in the contested city of Zawiyah, he’s actually giving journalists tours of the area to prove it’s back in his control. Look on his works, ye mighty, and despair.
For an argument on why we should intervene post haste, read David Frum. It boils down to protecting American prestige, but I don’t see how that would be enhanced if we impose a NFZ and, per J.E.’s nightmare, Qaddafi ends up rolling over the rebels anyway all the way back to Benghazi. Obama’s crew called some of the rebels in Benghazi this morning as they again fired scarce ammunition in the air. That has to be why he’s so upbeat.

So if we want them to win then that would say enforce a No Fly Zone, right?
Actually, I am pretty sure you have telegraphed there are no real options on the table at all!
bluemarlin on March 11, 2011 at 9:58 PM
I don’t think it is just about American prestige..it is about PanAm 103 and the Americans Gaddafi killed..and the truth is once Obama starts yakking about how the noose is tightening it just makes us look even more ridiculous if Gaddafi not only survives..but starts killing all sorts of people in retribution. I know people don’t want to see American troops in there and I don’t think it is necessary to go that far, but a no fly zone is not the same as invading.
We have seen people rise up in both Iran and Libya and what did Obama do to give support to any of these people?

slickwillie2001 on March 11, 2011 at 10:02 PM
Obama started this thing when he spoke in Cairo.
But, when it comes to execution, seems the only execution going on is that of the anti-Gadaffi folks, or the youth of Iran last year, or hundreds and hundreds of others in the region who were told that democracy is a good thing, carpe diem, the time is now.
As the anti-Gadaffi rebels are left to twist in the wind by Obama, at least Nicolas Sarkozy out in Paris did the right thing by officially recognizing the Benghazi government.
When we see France taking the lead, we must be all bolixed up.
We are?
OK.

Why is there little talk about connection of Gaddhafi with Louis Farrahkhan and Jeremiah Wright and the association of these two gentlemen with Obama.
Obama has no vested interest to oust Gaddhafi while he did have a vested interest to oust Mubarak (the Suez Canal).
technopeasant on March 11, 2011 at 10:03 PM
A no-fly zone is silly.
Why have our airmen take the risk, go over the target and NOT drop bombs?
A missile strike and air strikes against Daffy’s command and control and his air assets/bases makes a lot more sense. If he has no airplanes to fly then we have a no-fly zone without having to worry about it.
Daffy deserves it and he has poison gas stocks that shouldn’t be in his hands or fall into the hands of whoever takes over. We also want the oil flowing given world events.
If the guys fighting Daffy turn out to be bad guys (likely) then we haven’t lost anything and at least we took down the guy who ordered the Pan Am 103 bombing.
sharrukin on March 11, 2011 at 10:05 PM
If you’re going to publicly say that a leader must go, as Obama has, you better make sure that you’re willing to do what it takes to make that happen or you will end up looking like a fool and severely damage your credibility.

Sounds a little crazy to me. If we really wanted him dead, we could have done that decades ago, why the rush now?

I don’t want a NFZ over Libya at all.
The opportunity presents itself and we should take. There is also the Mustard gas and what is left of his nuclear program that should be dealt with. There is also the oil which we want flowing.
This is not a difficult thing to do and it has several upsides. We are not invading the country.

The world is watching, the UN is meeting to draft a very strong letter (after it finishes bashing Israel again), ooooo I’ll bet Daffy is so scared.

The problem with doing nothing when it’s smart to do nothing is that it encourages potential adversaries to see us as a spent force.
Well, we may be: but if we aren’t, then at some point we may have to use otherwise unnecessary force just to correct the wrong impression.

I mean to show ourselves unwilling to help Arabs who genuinely ask us for help, does he think we have a better reputation because he failed to help?
Maybe he is right. I think he understands the crazy way they think better than I do. But I don’t get how not helping them boosts our image or wins any hearts and minds.
There must be some code I don’t get.

Liberals truly have a problem with lying, including lying to themselves. We see it time and again among their leaders and spokesmen, and Obama is the worst. It is destroying this nation.
paul1149 on March 11, 2011 at 11:00 PM
He’s either out of touch, being told lies by his staff, beginning to believe he really is god, suffering from a mental illness, on drugs or just plain incompetent and unable to understand what is going on.
Some of this might also just be where you arrive at when you know you have a media that lies and covers for you. Lets face it, Obama could probably spit in the face of a baby, steal candy from a 6 year old while stepping on his puppy… all on national TV and the mainstream media will be enthralled with his love of children and animals.

The only reason Barack/Michelle wanted the job of President was they wanted the trappings and prestige of being President, like, let say, Mugabe. He doesn’t actually want to do the job or have any idea what to do with it. At this point, I really feel sorry for the guy. He looks like a wet noodle wearing a suit. I’d bet anything he’d give his left one if Bill Clinton would walk up and take over the podium for him. That one scene explains the essence of his entire presidency.

funny stuff…Steve Bridges imitated George Bush on the Jay Leno Show during the entire eight years he was president. He was made up to look and act almost exactly like Bush. He has now started imitating Obama and REALLY does it right. The Administration has tried to put a stop to Bridges’ act because Obama has made it known that he is deeply offended.

No doubt the specter of trial in an international court (joke) is causing Qadafi to quake in his boots. All Barry can muster is some vague, feckless threat of legal action against a ruthless dictator who is slaughtering his own people. Pathetic.

David2.0 on March 12, 2011 at 12:42 PM
In the 90′s, President Clinton, to his credit, intervened against Serbia in its aggression against Croatia and Bosnia. His bombing campaign, which was conducted without UN sanction, defeated the Serbs and ended the mass murder of that war. He later said he regretted doing nothing about the Rawandan genocide. As the only nation in the world capable of stopping dictators from slaughtering their own people, some would say we have a moral obligation to do so. As someone once said, those who stand by and watch evil acts, even though they have the ability to stop them, are just as guilty as the perpetrators.
In 2003, after the invasion of Iraq, which overthrew an evil dictator, the government of Libya genuinely feared that George W. Bush would end the reign of Muammar Qaddafi, too, and to forestall that, Tripoli gave up their weapons of mass destruction and decided to cooperate with the international community.
Watching Obama’s press conference the other day, I was struck by how hard he tried to wiggle out of committing the US to do anything but watch and occasionally give a heartless tut tut. Sec State Hillary said nothing would be done without international approval, meaning without a nod from Russia and China. It appears that American power cannot be wielded without foreign approval. Meanwhile, the Arab spring will wither as everyone who figured the US will always support an Arab dictator will have their suspicions confirmed.
Now, the world knows that Barack Obama will never intervene to stop a dictator, especially a Muslim, and that it’s safe to conduct whatever genocide is required to maintain power. Libya is no longer afraid of us. Nobody is.
NNtrancer on March 12, 2011 at 2:49 PM
I would like to point out that NFZ over Iraq for years prevented the genocide of the Kurds. Why are very pro-American as a result. They are pro-Israel too. (See Michael Totten on this, who spent a lot of time there.) It also contained Saddam somewhat. It was safe for us, didn’t cost that much, and got us a lot more.
Also, if we are indulgent to Qaddafi, will he not get the idea he can go for nukes again? Will the various terrorist nuke providers like North Korea not start sending him materiel?
