Secret WH memo: Why aren’t any high schools asking Obama to speak at commencement this year?

posted at 9:10 pm on March 7, 2011 by Allahpundit

Is there any sadder testament to the fading magic of Hopenchange than this? Reading it, I actually felt sorry for the guy.

Any high school principals out there in the HA audience have time to throw together an application and reassure The One that kids still love him? And by “love him,” I mean “will happily sit through a speech/photo op in lieu of having to go to class.”

The competition was extended from the February 25 deadline until Friday, March 11 after few schools met the original application deadline. CBS News has learned a White House Communications Office internal memo dated February 22 noted “a major issue with the Commencement Challenge.”

“As of yesterday we had received 14 applications and the deadline is Friday,” the memo said. The memo also urged recipients to, “please keep the application number close hold.”

A follow-up memo on February 28 reported receipt of 68 applications. Noting the competition among more than 1,000 schools last year, the memo said, “Something isn’t working.” It called on staffers to ask “friendly congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral offices” to encourage schools to apply.

“We should also make sure the Cabinet is pushing the competition out to their lists,” the memo said. The note reiterated, “We do not want the actual application number out there (we didn’t release the number of applications we received last year until after the submission period)-so folks should not use it in their pitches.”

Act now, people. By the time June rolls around, Saudi Arabia might be locked in a civil war. It could be your school’s graduation where he first calls for an “orderly transition” or whatever in Riyadh.

A friend reports on the overheard diatribe by a man of color complaining about the rapid rise of the price of gas: “that Obama-guy we elected isn’t doing so good.”
obladioblada on March 7, 2011 at 11:25 PM

I started hearing that a couple of months into his term. Not about gas, but about all the “Obama stash” money everybody was supposed to get their fair share of. At first it was half-joking, but they steadily got more serious about it. And that was before the bad stuff even started.

It’ll be ironic if the Community-Organizer-In-Chief finally gets a taste of his own medicine before his term is over, and has to face an angry mob and listen to their new organizer tell HIM what he needs to do to keep the “pitchforks” at bay.

This makes me wonder if the prospects for his re-election campaign isn’t going to have some problems.

I seem to remember that the CREEP (Committee to Re-Elect the President) wants to raise a billion dollars from donations and have squads if not companies of ‘boots on the ground’ in all states helping to get out the vote.

This may well be a ‘canary in the coal mine’ sort of indicator.

It’s just that all schools are turning RACIST!!!

Doh!

DuctTapeMyBrain on March 8, 2011 at 8:51 AM

Well there is the problem right there. Obama is looking for a school that understands the number one priority is making sure our kids are learning what they need to succeed in the 21st century. Obviously todays schools number one priority is making sure teachers get tenure, guaranteed pay increases, don’t have to pay into their healthcare and pensions and keep all their collective bargaining “rights”. No time for learning those kids!

An orderly transition to AQ? With, SURPRISE!, Osama bin Laden as head of government?

LOL! The loser in chief just can’t get a break can he? Someone needs to poll the question if they would like Barry to speak at their school and if he did would the call in sick for their kids and write them an excuse.

jistincase on March 8, 2011 at 9:36 AM

I’m sure they will manage to spin this somehow: Obama’s election inspired the children so much that they’re all too busy trying to model themselves on him though educational achievement to have time for a commencement ceremony. Or his election has inspired such a widespread wave of selflessness that no school wants to book him lest they deny another school his presence on that day. Or perhaps Obama is just so magnificent they’re worried his appearance might cause the kids to realize how insignificant they are. I’m sure they’ll come up with something.

Sharke on March 8, 2011 at 9:45 AM

Maybe he needs to get out there and publicly apologize for America’s harsh treatment of high schools by previous administrations, and then everything would be OK again…

From CBSNews:

by unclesmrgol March 7, 2011 4:48 PM EST
Well, there’s the problem right there — “friendly congressional, mayoral, and gubernatorial offices”. If he opened it up to the UNFRIENDLY ones, he’d probably be swamped with applications right now.

Well, at least he has 14 to choose from. That’s way bigger than zero.

unclesmrgol on March 8, 2011 at 9:57 AM

Theories:
-They’re afraid MoochHell will spot sloppy joes in their cafeterias and call a hazmat team.

-They don’t want to teach students that the proper technique of public speaking is to read your own friggin name off a teleprompter.

-They don’t want the obligatory blue t-shirts passed out from OFA (Obama Fornicating America).

-They despise the crummy marxist punk Barry Soetero and cant seem to separate him from his MSNBC-burnished image

Western_Civ on March 8, 2011 at 10:03 AM

I (almost) don’t get it…he got 14 applications, why not just choose one of them and be done with it? Is he planning on going to 30 of them and he needs 16 more applications?

Of course not. It’s about his ego being bruised. But really, is he THAT dumb that he would feel better about drumming up obviously fake enthusiasm than just quietly sucking it up and going to one of the schools that truly want him there?

James on March 8, 2011 at 10:32 AM

And why isn’t this the Obamateurism of the Day?

James on March 8, 2011 at 10:33 AM

Hey, hey teach, call on me, I know the answer. They are afraid of the controversy it will stir up in their schools and their neighborhoods with all these special interests showing up in their town or city. The teacher’s unions are sure to show up just to mention the most obvious followed by anyone else who wants the lime light and sees this as an opportunity. It will create a big mess, can’t miss. Got to give those schools who signed on credit for something, either stupidity or a publicity opp. or a chance to make a point(read that as take sides).

jeanie on March 8, 2011 at 10:36 AM

You mean there isn’t even a Booker T. Washington High School somewhere in the nation that wants Obama to give the Commencement address?

Maybe they (White House) should just offer TOTUS instead…a lot less “ummms” and “as I’ve always said” and such in the commencement speech.

When even the schools of America are showing clear signs of Obama Fatigue, there is indeed real hope for America.

coldwarrior on March 8, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Because he is a bad influence, that’s why….And I will never feel sorry for him!

High School Graduations are racist!

Koa on March 8, 2011 at 2:24 PM

Let’s see, there are approximately 30,000 public high schools in the US. Only 16 of these applied to have the fumbling, bumbling, mumbling excuse for a president speak at their commencements.

I have just gained a new respect for the students in our schools and what they are learning!!!!! Let’s not berate the level of our high school’s advancement ever again.

It called on staffers to ask “friendly congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral offices” to encourage schools to apply.

He is so desperate, he invited himself to a Boston Public School High School today. Pathetic bastard.

President Obama told a rambunctious crowd in Dorchester this afternoon that he would push to make America’s education system tops in the world — and told the crowd at TechBoston Academy to honor their teachers.

You mean where he states we shouldn’t get involved and should let the current government slaughter it’s people in the streets with no interference from us whatsoever?

Or have you missed the track record of our fearful leader who makes Brave Sir Robin from Monty Python look like a courageous and solid leader by comparison.
