Finally: The Wisconsin “civility” highlight reel
posted at 6:15 pm on March 7, 2011 by Allahpundit
Via the Daily Caller, alternate headline: “Mary Katharine Ham learning to curse like a sailor.”
Ace floats three possibilities for why the media wets itself over excesses at tea-party rallies yet finds excesses at progressive protests uninteresting. I subscribe to his second one, but increasingly I’ve come around to number three too — i.e. that these fraudulent, hypocritical talking points they push for a media cycle or two aren’t meant to be seen as anything other than talking points. They know they have an ideological bias and they know that an increasingly media-savvy public knows it too, so when they demagogue a horrible crime against a Democrat that had nothing to do with civility to try to make Republicans squirm, they’re just doing what left-leaning political actors do. It’s the most natural thing in the world, and because everyone now recognizes them as political actors, some of the ethical pressure on them to be “neutral” is relieved. The jig is up, so why not embrace it? By the same token, then, why would they highlight aberrant incidents of bad behavior by their own side in Wisconsin? Fox News and talk radio can cover that.
Here’s MKH’s quick take. There’s one unbleeped F-bomb (not uttered by her), so please observe your content warning.

Why won’t Ace be consistent and say that media insults of the tea party are about as important as American Idol?

Meet the new tone, same as the old tone.
And MKH is oozes awesome sauce in everything she does. Even on twitter.

Consistency isn’t Ace’s forte. His support for Governor Chris Christie speaks volumes.

The “new tone” is for conservative squishes and other assorted chumps and nancy-boys.

Actually, even number one is valid, in a way. It’s not that these union goonies can’t be incited to violence, it’s that…if they get “angry”, it’s entirely deserved of them to “express their anger”. According to lefties I’ve talked to.

Civility is so one sided
Kini on March 7, 2011 at 6:45 PM
I think most in the media think people on the left have a good point, and they can understand why they are saying these things. They think most reasonable people, if they were pushed, would say these things about Republicans.
But when conservatives say these things, they are being radical. They are attacking the good people. They are fighting against the good fight.

Here’s my favorite take on “civility.” It’s by Don Surber.
I first saw this either here or at Ace. Either way, it’s worth a second look.
I do not want civil discourseJanuary 23,
2011 by Don Surber
For a decade, from the election of Bush 43 forward, the Left has lied and cheated as it tried to return to power.
Al Gore made a mockery out of the American electoral system by being a spoilsport over Florida, which Bush indeed won by 537 votes. Dan Rather forged a document to try to derail Bush’s re-election. Twice Democrats stole U.S. senators from the Republicans. After voting to support the war to get by the 2002 election, many Democrats quickly soured on the war. The profane protests were cheered by liberals who misattributed “dissent is the highest form of patriotism” to Thomas Jefferson; the words belong to the late historian Howard Zinn.
Once in power, liberals were the opposite of gracious.
For two years now, I have been called ignorant, racist, angry and violent by the left. The very foul-mouthed protesters of Bush dare to now label my words as “hate speech.”
Last week, the left quickly blamed the right for the national tragedy of a shooting spree by a madman who never watched Fox News, never listened to Rush Limbaugh and likely did not know who Sarah Palin is.
Fortunately, the American public rejected out of hand that idiotic notion that the right was responsible.
Rather than apologize, the left wants to change the tone of the political debate.
The left suddenly wants civil discourse.
Bite me.
The left wants to play games of semantics.
Bite me.
The left wants us to be civil — after being so uncivil for a decade.
Bite me.
There is grown-up work to do now. Liberals ran up the federal credit card, destroyed the American medical system and undermined the rule of law — which is the foundation of capitalism — with a bunch of unconstitutional fiats from the president and his bureaucracy.
The economy is a mess. The president “inherited” a 7.6% unemployment rate. It’s now 9.4% — after we spent a record $787 billion on a stimulus.
I was not consulted on that stimulus. I had a very good argument against it. I said the money supply was too large and printing more money would fail. I said let the economic downturn run its course.
Lefties were too busy celebrating the 2008 election to listen.
When people protested lefties made vulgar remarks about tea-bagging and giggled.
So screw you and your civil discourse.
I don’t want to hear it.
I have been screamed at for 10 years.
It’s my turn now. I am not going to scream back. But I refuse to allow anyone to dictate what I say or how I say it. I refuse to allow the same foul-mouthed, foul-spirited foul people who dumped on me to now try to tell me what I may or may not say.
My free speech matters more than the feelings of anyone on the left. You don’t like what I say?
Tough.
I will not allow people to label my words Hate Speech or try to lecture me on civility. I saw the lefty signs. The left’s definition of civil discourse is surreal.
We have a terribly unfit president who has expanded government control beyond not only what is constitutional but what is healthy for our freedom.
Indeed, this call for civil discourse is itself a direct threat to my free speech.
So screw you.
You don’t like my words? You don’t like my tone? You feel threatened?
Too bad.
No.
Actually, that is what I want. I want the lefties to feel bad. I want them to feel hurt. I want them to cry to their mommies.
That way the field will be cleared so we grown-ups can fix the nation and the economy. If you can’t put up with a little excrement, get the hell out of the barn.

princetrumpet on March 7, 2011 at 6:57 PM
I think it’s because shameful behavior frome the Left is a “dog bites man” story. It’s just not newsworthy.
It’s like the whole “Name That Party” game. Any time someone does something legally or moorally wrong, unless that person’s political party is explicitly mentioned, the person should be assumed to be a Democrat.
It’s just modern journalistic standards. Assuming that pretty much every criminal activity reported in the newspaper is a Democrat allows the publisher to save money on ink.
malclave on March 7, 2011 at 6:58 PM
nancy boy. lol. I heard that’s barack’s real name, hence the hidden birth documents. Why don’t he just say it loud and proud? President Nancy Boy, yes we can!

Mary Katharine has been bad and I believe she needs a spanking.
darwin-t on March 7, 2011 at 7:03 PM
But about argument #3… I do find it surprising how often WH or lefty talking points make it into mainstream newscasts.
I found the whole idea that Obama needed an “Oklahoma City” moment, followed by the immediate exploitation of the Loughtner incident to be quite shocking.
I guess Michelle Obama’s attempt to make that incident about tolerance didn’t quite work, so look for the next crisis to be due to the intolerant right, rather than the violent right. Tolerance seems to be a cause without a focus in Obamaland.

Definitely #2. It’s all wrapped up in their “social justice” and “economic justice” meme. The ends justifies the means.

Umm, yeah, me too. Not.
MikeA on March 7, 2011 at 8:37 PM
The speed at the hypocrisy this round was amazing as well. We went almost immediatly from the Arizona shooting, blaming Palin and tea partiers with a presidential call for civility. To Wisconsin where the the President wades in and Union goons completely lose their collective mind, all of which is on tape, on the record and completly ignored by major media.
Koa on March 7, 2011 at 8:57 PM
Lets just sum the new tone up as the old tone only more threats. The Senator who told she was f– ing dead is guilty of Terrorist Threats and should have been arrested and charged, it is a felony and would have cost him his seat in Washington.
If the American people would wake up they could see who does and does not care about America. The Tea Party has 150,000 at a rally and after it is over you can not tell they have been there. The Union Thugs in Wisconsin left a mess all over the outside of the Capitol and did millions of dollars in damage to the inside. They left posters, food, water bottles, and all kinds of trash inside not to mention what was left outside. Now who really gives a hoot in heII about this Country. Not the Left, every rally they have is left the same way, a total mess, they do not pick up anything and take it home with them, they trash the area the same as they trash America. Decertify all Public Service Unions, the Teachers held a two week long illegal strike but called it sick days. If they were sick why were they walking around protesting. Fire every Teacher who called in sick, and black list the ones who come in with the fake Doctors Notes so they can never teach in Wisconsin again. They have stolen two weeks of summer from the kids and they do not deserve the honor of being called Teachers.

these are certainly not mutually exclusive. progressive journalists will often say that their presentation of news events may appear to have a liberal bias while being perfectly objective because “reality has a ‘liberal bias’”. applied to what we’re discussing here, the translation is “…b-but, bush really was hitler!”
they also believe that, regardless of the implications of words like “revolution” and imagery of klashnikovs and molotovs, the left isn’t really capable of acts like the oklahoma city bombing. perhaps they aren’t, or at least haven’t been since the early 20th century. the fact is that the fringiest fringe of the left tends to be sensibly risk averse. they may say “revolution” now to put the dream in the believers’ heads, but the actual blood and guts of revolution is for a time when the “hegemon” is in a state of critical failure, and until that situation develops, it is best to be like the lamb, the victim, the peaceful, while building one’s opponents up as irrational, violent beasts of prey.
of course, the left are not so peaceful and the right is not nearly so beastly, and an opposite portrayal of a violence-prone left and a victimized “silent majority” could be wrought effectively. there is a sort of game where you pretend that the other side is capable of unknown horrors while your own side is just too darn preternaturally fair and decent to even conceive of such things.
google “both sides don’t do it” . it has beecome a popular phrase on the lefty blogs along with “magical balance fairy”. it’s a way of reacting to any references to facts which undermine their manichean narrative about bad words and bad deeds in politics. suffice it to say that whenever you see the phrase “no, both sides don’t do it” written by a progressive, “it” is something which can readily be shown to be something that progressives do more profligately, did first, and continue to do in innovative new ways; sometimes even as they are professing that their side never does it.
there’s something actually amazing about the fact that one doesn’t even need to go back to the bush era to find examples of everything which the progressive left portrays as an unprecedented and uniquely rightwing reaction to the obama presidency; from hitler comparisons on down to lone gunman rampages.
eh on March 8, 2011 at 1:10 AM
i am, for instance, amazed that something like the clay duke florida school board shooting, or the discovery channel hostage standoff did not immediately halt and reverse the bogus “teabagger terrorist” meme.
but then, i’ve never seen a conservative strenuously assert that john hinkley jr. was a mondale-voting card carrying and fully representative democrat simply because he shot a republican progressive who happened to be the focus of a particularly concentrated and hateful leftwing derangement. i’m certain that many would like to be able to – it would satisfy an easy narrative – but the facts just aren’t there, so they don’t.
i guess there are things “both sides don’t do.”
eh on March 8, 2011 at 1:20 AM
Golly gee, Democrats: Miss Manners is blushing…
Steve Z on March 8, 2011 at 9:21 AM
The whole civility discussion pushed forth by the libs in the Media and government was just trying to to make the Republicans cowher and be quiet. Anything conservative is deemed unacceptable and cruel, anything liberal is okay.
For example, if I say Obama’s spending is out of control, then I’m being racist. If a union member says they want to kill a Republican congressman, then that is acceptable because the Republican is racist and deserves it.
