Quotes of the day

posted at 10:28 pm on March 4, 2011 by Allahpundit

“A year ago Chris Christie was sworn in as the new governor. He immediately faced a $10.7 billion deficit and catastrophic debt projections. State and local taxes were already high, so that if he raised them he’d send people racing out of the state. So Mr. Christie came up with a plan. He asked the state’s powerful teachers union for two things: a one-year pay freeze—not a cut—and a modest 1.5% contribution to their benefit packages.

“The teachers union went to war. They said, ‘Christie is trying to kill the unions,’ so they tried to kill him politically. They spent millions on ads trying to take him down.

“And it backfired. They didn’t kill him, they made him. Chris Christie is a national figure now because the teachers union decided, in an epic political drama in which arithmetic is the predominant fact, to ignore the math.”

“Generally I’m a fan of the YouTube-friendly governor of New Jersey, but in this clip I think he’s getting a little bit out of control

“The problem, of course, isn’t that Chris Christie wouldn’t do a great job if he went toe-to-toe in a collective bargaining battle with New Jersey’s government unions. I have no doubt that he would. He cares about the taxpayers a great deal more than he cares about the unions he’s always ripping on. The problem arises when a Democratic governor, whose party gets substantial campaign donations and manpower to stir up unrest, wage street campaigns, etc from the government unions, also sits across from those same unions at the bargaining table to decide on their benefits and pay packages. There’s a built-in conflict of interest there, and no one at the table is really representing the taxpayers who have to pay for everything the government unions get. Also, not all GOP governors are created equal: For every one Chris Christie who relishes the fight with the government unions, there are probably 10 weaker GOP govs who fear the fight because they lack the backbone for the politics of it all. So they give in to the unions without much of a fight, leaving the taxpayer to pick up the tab. The entire process is inherently unfair to the non-unionized taxpayer.”

***
“Why is Chris Christie the heartthrob of the radio right, while Daniels is suddenly an intolerable RINO? Christie is not more conservative than Daniels, and arguably even less so. Christie told the Newark Star-Ledger that while personally pro-life, he won’t use his office to ‘shove that down people’s throats.’ He supports New Jersey’s restrictive gun laws. And like Daniels, he has decided it’s tough enough to face his public-sector unions that he does not need to start an unrelated fight over right-to-work with private-sector unions. Yet the most acid-tongued of all right-wing commentators, Ann Coulter, has championed a Christie candidacy, asserting that if he declines to run, ‘Romney will be our nominee and we’ll lose.’

“The difference is this: talk radio is not much interested in the substance of a politician’s views or the reasons for decisions. Talk radio wants a confrontational style, and unlike the soft-spoken Daniels, the fierce Christie meets the test. The rule seems to be: it’s OK to be a Republican moderate – provided you are belligerent enough about it.”

No, I don’t want to be offended. You wanted to offend me. And you did. Even though you’d be hard pressed to find posts of me stabbing you in the back or insulting you, as you did to me, because I never have posted such things about or to you.

And you wonder why people don’t want to post here, with juvenile stunts like this. You and alt can get all jr. high together, I hope it makes you giggle and feel superior to put others down. You are really not the person you pretend to be here. Not by a long shot.

Well the conspiracy theorist just got there so it might be time for me to check out. I can’t even read that stuff. Our government couldn’t find its’ a$$ with both hands and I’m suppose to buy into some big plot?

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.

Oh, I been flying… mama, there ain’t no denyin’
I’ve been flying, ain’t no denyin’, no denyin’

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I’ve been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin’ through Kashmir.

Cindy Munford on March 5, 2011 at 2:03 AM

P.S. If you would engage me directly maybe I could answer your question. If: A. I knew what “big plot” you referred to, or think I referred to and B. I have never posited that our “government”, per se, is engaged in doing the thinking or possesses any competence whatsoever. They can take orders though. Coordinated planning is the province of international and supranational groupings, many of these involved in controlling the highest end financial world markets and banks, who will benefit mightily from U.S. demise and who do control key players in our government at this point in American history.

You think differently. Fine. Instead of insults, please explain your view of who, for example, if anyone, controls people like the POTUS and why every policy, regulation, law and executive order that comes from him is detrimental (or not, in your view) to the nation. And, if obama has crafted this coincindental pattern of consistent destruction on his own, please give reasons for such solitary brilliance.

Cindy Munford on March 5, 2011 at 8:55 AM

Did Christie ever get the concessions from the teachers union or did he give it up. It was a small deal in the beginning so if he eventually got or gets it, will he go back to the budget buffet and whack the teachers again? If he does, then we will know if he’s serious or not about saving his state from dem created financial ruin.

Kissmygrits on March 5, 2011 at 9:01 AM

If memory serves, several counties turned his offer down. I think in those areas there were people fired. As for bargaining with them again, I don’t know if he has addressed that detail.

Cindy Munford on March 5, 2011 at 9:11 AM

“Why is Chris Christie the heartthrob of the radio right, while Daniels is suddenly an intolerable RINO? Christie is not more conservative than Daniels, and arguably even less so.”

I wouldn’t go as far as to say heartthrob. Mark Levin and Mike Church have been severely critical of Christie. But there is something to say about testicular fortitude. What’s so great about having principles if you aren’t willing to go to battle over them? Talk is cheap. Christie is not Presedential; I’ll give you that. His lack of any socially conservative principle that he’d be willing to fight for means that they would be something he’d sacrifice for gaining on the principles he does want to achieve. Palin, as much as I don’t like her, hit the nail on the head when saying that it’s not exactly as gutsy as portrayed to cut spending when one is broke. He’s been very weak on immigration, terrorism, and guns. Let’s face it, there is still not a nominee worth fighting for…yet. If Christie doesn’t understand how demoralization of society contributes to the other causes he champions, he’ll never get it. It took me a while to make the link myself. I just don’t suspect that he’ll ever see how drive-thru abortions and single mothers may affect other areas of interest.

Levinite on March 5, 2011 at 9:36 AM

but in this clip I think he’s getting a little bit out of control.

That statement is made and then under the clip he totally contradicts himself and makes exactly the same, and correct, point that christie is making. There is no one representing the taxpayer in negotiations between politicians and public sector unions. There should be no public sector unions and public employees should be paid with a scale based on what is being paid in the private sector and benefit packages should be structured the same way. As it is, in most states a poor teacher just has to hang on long enough and they will be set for life. All those dirtbags in the rubber rooms in new york city will eventually retire with huge retirement packages and the children that had to be protected from them will have to pay for thier cushy retirements.

Allahp missed the real point from Bryan Preston’s linked quote of the day.

There’s a bottom line in all this that few have addressed so far: Collective bargaining for government workers isn’t and never was a “right.” It was always a privilege, and an expensive privilege at that. And it’s a privilege that some states are concluding they can simply no longer afford.

As John Stossel schooled O’Reilly against Bill’s will a few nights ago, collective bargaining is not a “constitutional right” but is a power, and that power has been brokered through legislation. Finally, legislation itself changes through new legislation all of the time. And “collective bargaining” legislation is not taboo from being renegotiated as budgets and economy demand, especially according to the voice of voting taxpayers.

maverick muse on March 5, 2011 at 10:02 AM

Political debate need not be taken personally in order to be effective. In fact, the more personally vindictive and ad hominem the rhetoric becomes, the less legitimate grounds exist. Getting bent out of shape when Christie and Palin practice healthy debate is a self defeating behavior. Neither is attacking the other as a person or as an image. Stick to the ideas and solutions to problems, as they do. Or assign yourself amongst the Alinsky merchants of death, regardless of whom you support, smearing ugliness in juvenile fashion as if doing that doesn’t destroy your own credibility.

I had the same response as Jay Gatsby. Laura Ingraham voiced total discontent these past weeks especially, outright anger, that Republican candidates have yet to commit for a ’12 potus campaign, and then the disgust with Parnell for not playing her game with her on her show, despite the politics he’s responsibly dealing with as Alaskan Governor.

What people demand that they need more often as not amounts to what they want, not necessarily at all what they “need”.

As Mark Steyn and Hugh Hewitt agreed the other night, not a single Republican elitist Leader aligns himself with the Tea Party movement, failing to attend a single rally, and failing completely in Congress to fulfill the REAL FINANCE CUTS, offering only insignificant pieces of candy cuts from the grotesque federal $pending as if to pacify big baby constituents.

Quit looking at the same candidates as if they’re going to miraculously represent the Tea Party agenda. Don’t look to the “winnable” recognizable names.

If there’s one thing that Obama’s election proved, it’s that a new name from nowhere can win the presidency so long as the campaign has the message that sells. Obama sells lies, deceit and debt. Let his corner that market and nail him to it. He isn’t an unknown entity any longer, anyway.

Solidify the Tea Party movement national platform. What America needs to elect is the agenda, and officials who will actually implement the agenda, not placate themselves or target audiences with fluff as if achieving substantive cuts in spending. When constitutional conservatives step up to the Tea Party agenda plate willing to play political ball from that platform, let’s rally and win on principles that make for solidly effective POLICY.

Leave the cast voting for hairstyle or even for “charisma” for freaks hung up on Hollywood.

George Washington’s personality was extremely stand-offish. Thomas Jefferson’s personality was rather withheld. It isn’t as if charisma reflects anything more than a public facade. And those disillusioned by the likes of any charismatic leader don’t ever “win” anything by repeating the same error in judgment, voting on image rather than substance.

maverick muse on March 5, 2011 at 10:39 AM

And yet you fail to embrace or even mention the only national candidate that has not only embraced the agenda of the TEa party but has govorened under that agenda before there was even a TEA party. which pretty much calls your entire post into the realm of BS/willfully ignorant. Gov Palin has govenored as a TEA partyy candidated, cmapigned as a TEA party candidadte and as done more to elect other like minded canddidates than any other and you give her no credit whatsoever.
