Obama: I believe in the 2nd Amendment
posted at 1:36 pm on March 4, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
CNS News has a pretty good moment here for Barack Obama from yesterdays’ presser with Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon, after a reporter from Mexico challenged Obama on why he doesn’t just “veto” the 2nd Amendment. Obama patiently explains that American Presidents have to work within the Constitution and don’t have the power to veto its provisions, and then explains that the 2nd Amendment isn’t the problem in gunrunning between here and Mexico. We can and should curtail that through enforcement of existing law, Obama says, rather than infringing on the “legitimate” uses of firearms by American citizens:
“The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution allows American citizens to carry weapons and this principle is defended,” the Mexican reporter said. “However, President Calderón has said that this law in Congress–this could actually go against U.S. agents, and this has happened. So, President Obama, in Mexico we have the veto, the power of veto. I don’t know how far you have the ability to veto that law that has been approved. And if you have that responsibility, why don’t you do so, sir? How long are we going to allow Mexicans to be murdered–and not just Mexicans, but now Americans, as well?”
Obama responded: “Well, the Second Amendment in this country is part of our Constitution, and the president of the United States is bound by our Constitution. So I believe in the Second Amendment. It does provide for Americans the right to bear arms for their protection, for their safety, for hunting, for a wide range of uses. That does not mean that we cannot constrain gun-runners from shipping guns into Mexico. And so we believe that we can shape an enforcement strategy that slows the flow of guns into Mexico, while at the same time preserving our Constitution.”
Of course, we would need the ATF to stop expediting the flow of guns first before attempting to interdict them, as one ATF agent accuses the agency of doing:
An Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms senior agent assigned to the Phoenix office in 2010, Dodson’s job is to stop gun trafficking across the border. Instead, he says he was ordered to sit by and watch it happen.
Investigators call the tactic letting guns “walk.” In this case, walking into the hands of criminals who would use them in Mexico and the United States.
Dodson’s bosses say that never happened. Now, he’s risking his job to go public.
“I’m boots on the ground in Phoenix, telling you we’ve been doing it every day since I’ve been here,” he said. “Here I am. Tell me I didn’t do the things that I did. Tell me you didn’t order me to do the things I did. Tell me it didn’t happen. Now you have a name on it. You have a face to put with it. Here I am. Someone now, tell me it didn’t happen.”
Agent Dodson and other sources say the gun walking strategy was approved all the way up to the Justice Department. The idea was to see where the guns ended up, build a big case and take down a cartel. And it was all kept secret from Mexico.
ATF named the case “Fast and Furious.”
In defense of the ATF, I’m not sure I’d bet on the ability of Mexico’s security forces to keep a secret. But it’s hardly clear that “gun walking” would provide a boon of information to take down one of Mexico’s cartels. Instead, it just seems to have allowed the cartels to arm themselves a little more cheaply than otherwise. After the murder of an American border agent — which should be a high-profile investigation — the provenance of the weapon doesn’t appear to have given the US or Mexico any better leverage against the cartels at all.

why don’t you go ask your fellow countrymen that jackass? The dude that you’re petitioning there is responsible insofar as his administration may have allowed weapons to cross the border and head south and failed to maintain a controlled border. Hell, he wants to regulate everything else to death–everything except the shared border.

High profile investigation? Sounds more like special prosecutor material to me. As the bullet that passed through the agents body came from a weapon the AFT put directly into the hands of the cartel I would hope we don’t think this is all just some tragic mistake.

Hate to point this out, but many conservatives wanted to build a damn fence and massively increase border security years ago.
We were called racists, and the potential fence was called the 21st century Berlin Wall by Mexican leaders and people.
So now things have gotten bad and you want to stop the flow of bad things into your country? Now you know how I feel. I wanted to stop the flow of bad things, like terrorists and drug smugglers, into mine.
But you didn’t care. We were racist for that. We should have just dealt with it.
Well, now you can, too.

Obama pays lip service to the Constitution while he schemes to use regulatory agencies to skirt the Constitution. He plans on issuing “demand letters” to commercial gun dealers in four border states to provide gun sales information for handguns and rifles as a means of harassing them, hopefully into closing their businesses. It’s not about enforcing existing laws, it’s about achieving a target result.

In Mexico there is one gun store and their laws are worse than any state in the US on purchasing or owning one. Since gun control has not worked and under it 34,000 Mexicans have died, why doesn’t Mexico arm their civilians along the border to give them a fighting chance. With few police left to enforce the law, let the people enforce it.

It’s pretty long to post in its entirety but it’s succinct and the site it came from is unsearchable so I’ll link to the site anyway. Actions speak louder than words so let’s take a look at Obama’s actions regarding gun rights when he was an Illinois senator (emphasis mine):
It gets juicy in the next part but I don’t want to spam the thread too much so I’ll post the rest in a few…
He’s no champion of the 2nd amendment. He’s an enemy of it.

Why bother going to a gun store in the US when you can buy US provided arms to the Mexican police and military from corrupt members in each? Or have the BATFE run them to you?
So that’s where the ‘untraceable’ 10% from the US is coming from… our own government… and that section is just 10% or so of all guns in Mexico, the rest of them traced to such fine places as Mexican arms manufacturers, China, Russia, Venezuela, Colombia, Iran… need a score card for all the international arms dealers down there.

That would be correct, but also understand that when Obama says he believes in the Second Amendment, he is most certainly understanding something utterly opposite of what the original intention of the amendment was.
This needs to be understood. Barack Obama is not our president, in terms that we recognize as a person acts as the president of our great nation. He is acting upon his own agenda, not in furtherance of the oath of his office. He is subjugating the concepts of the Constitution to his own designs.
He truly is a traitor to the Constitution. And as such, he should be removed from office as soon as possible.
