Video: Wisconsin Dem intervenes to protect GOP senator threatened by mob

posted at 10:12 pm on March 1, 2011 by Allahpundit

You have to see it to believe it. The clip is long and the key moment doesn’t come until 2:50 in, but you won’t be able to look away. The savior here, in the orange union t-shirt and sportsjacket, is Democratic Rep. Brett Hulsey; behind him, with white hair and glasses, is Republican Sen. Glenn Grothman. Watch and try to imagine what might have happened had Hulsey not been there. Even some of the protesters are sufficiently alarmed to start a chant of “peace-ful” to calm the more unruly ones down.

Ann Althouse, who lives in Wisconsin and has been covering the protests since they began, reports tonight that her husband just got back from the statehouse with video of at least one person who seems to have lost his mind — either from sleep deprivation or who knows what else. Quote: “Someone needs to go around to everyone who is still there and check them for mental stability.” If you want to know why Michelle Litjens and other Republicans need a police escort around the Capitol, now you know. Are you being sarcastic? If not, define “children”.

Cindy Munford on March 2, 2011 at 12:07 PM

It appeared that both men were trying to show their identification to have the door opened. The police department has been uncooperative to Republican members. As for why he was there, he probably has life unlike those who have been hanging out there for over two weeks now.

Cindy Munford on March 2, 2011 at 1:03 AM

That is exactly why public service employees have no business being in a union. That decision could have real life or death consequences. Now they get to pick and choose who lives and dies?

They should just fire the lot of them and declare themselves a right to work state.

That was the “protest” in California. Since it’s hard to tell violent and raging unions protests apart from one another, and since the actions are exactly the same … it doesn’t change anything.

Hey, shouldn’t you be in Wisconsin supporting your fellow communists in their quest for the “workers paradise”?

Continue to live in ignorance, for it is bliss … and you seem like one blissful MoFo.

Right, if you might get a pay cut at work, you should definitely get violent, attack people, and act like a thug… it’s expected and acceptable.

At least in Dave’s world. See, being violent is bad, unless you’re a liberal protesting something; then it’s really pretty much ok.

Nice to see that when you believe the cause is just; that it justifies any action at all and that laws really shouldn’t protect people. I mean laws shouldn’t be applied equally, you should only apply them to people if they’re not people you like… right?

Hey, you could work in the Justice Department right now; you and Holder have pretty much the same ideas on the concept of “justice”.

Yes, he’s completely clueless. Perhaps deliberately. It’s easier to deny. The former would be better, as it would suggest an openness to learning. But I don’t think so.

I live at one of the grounds zero of the “protest” culture in California. No matter the issue, the ANSWER and World Workers — declaratively socialists and communists — are always out with the pre-printed signs and canned chants. But this is the Big Kahuna for them. They lose the union gravy train, they’re in trouble.

Mr. Rywall, they were indeed discussing the people who have been “bused” in to support the protesters in Wisconsin. None of the people shown were in Wisconsin but from their compatriots around the country. It is not stock footage, those individual incidents were separate instances that took place over the weekend. I did listen to the interview and you just read the large headline over the video. I hope you aren’t accusing me of being lazy.

What poor Dave doesn’t understand is that if this world of his dreams ever materialized, his life of luxuriating protest would be over. If there were any part of the “program” he didn’t like or get with, his future would be censorship. Or, if he pushed too hard, a cold dark cell. Finally, a bullet to the head. Free speech? Gone. Right to a redress of grievances? Gone. All the caterwauling joys of protest? Gone. All those malleable, decent and courteous Republicans willing to give and take (mostly give)? Gone. Nothing but consent and silence. Or death.

Roy Rogers on March 2, 2011 at 1:32 PM

Tea Party members didn’t do anything anywhere CLOSE to this and all the Dave Rywall types could say was that they were KKK rallies getting ready to go out and lynch black folks and how VIOLENT the protests were. Nancy Pelosi was saying how scared she was. When the Democrats walked out of the Capitol Building after the ObamaCare ramming they were saying they were scared for their lives walking into the crowds. REMEMBER ALL THAT????

So a Republican Representative gets cornered up against a LOCKED DOOR…SURROUNDING BY PROTESTERS…who are ADMITTING they are ANGRY…and it’s like: “Ooo…What a little CRY BABY. They were ONLY yelling at him…” ONLY YELLING AT HIM??? THEN WHY IN THE HELL DID HUNSLEY FEEL THE NEED TO PUT UP TWO FINGERS LIKE RICHARD NIXON, “I AM NOT A CROOK…” lol…Why did he feel the need to try and CALM DOWN the protesters? And listen very, very closely. Some of the orange knit vested folks felt the need to tell the crowd, “THE CAMERAS ARE ROLLING…” If there’s nothing to PROTECT from being FILMED because it was ALL SO PEACEFUL, why say that?

National versions of Communism have and always will fail, yes. Only a few European nations have managed to have working socialism, and we’ll never duplicate them because our demographics, history, and culture are wildly different. What works for one nation may well not work in another, as we’re finding out in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Really direct statements like that are limited to mostly Internet posts so far – which is good because it means people will only say it under the cover of anonymity. (ie; they aren’t really ready to take action)

But I’m starting to observe…well…an attitude of “this has been coming for a long time, so let’s settle it already.” It’s somewhat indirect yet, but it’s definitely there.

Hell, for all I know, maybe the two sides DO need to go at it.

Dark-Star on March 2, 2011 at 2:48 PM

The current libsurgent attacks are a distraction from all of Obama’s failures as well as his directly attributable responsibility for rising fuel costs.

How much of Obama’s failure to reduce overseas oil reliance by violating a judge’s order to rescind the Gulf drilling moratorium is being reported these days?

How many of the oil rigs Obama forced to leave the Gulf have returned?

I don’t remember Harry Reasoner, Sam Donaldson, or David Brinkley giving Jimmy Carter as huge a pass on the energy crisis as the liberal left is currently giving Obama.

Obviously I don’t frequent the same sites as you do other than HotAir because I get no such impression. And I would be very surprised at a planned confrontation.

The sentiment is here, but it’s way more restrained than some places – the last direct “bring it” statement was months ago.

What information or links do you have to indicate that “the hotheads of the right are polishing their guns and saying “bring it.”” ?

Cindy Munford on March 2, 2011 at 2:42 PM

Really direct statements like that are limited to mostly Internet posts so far – which is good because it means people will only say it under the cover of anonymity. (ie; they aren’t really ready to take action)

Meanwhile the Oppressive-Left is edging closer in the glare of the TV lights.

The NSM is ignoring such ugly scenes for some odd reason….

Not surprisingly, we don’t see the same things. It is odd that the last “bring it” statement was months ago with so much current turmoil.

But I’m starting to observe…well…an attitude
Dark-Star on March 2, 2011 at 2:48 PM

Really? How convenient. And how does that work? How many tea party gatherings did you attend in the past year? There were thousands across America. How many had anything to do with bellicose challenges to the Left to “bring it”? I went to quite a few. I only saw worried and abidingly conscientious Americas invoking the Constitution. 300,000 gathered in Washington, DC without an incident. How does that compare to the actual threats and mob behavior — the in-your-face profanity, intolerance, ugliness — we see unfolding every day now just over a two week period?

And why would “bring it”, if it was ever uttered in the first place, imply violence anyway?

I’ll say “bring it.” Because the more the Left “brings it”, the more chances America has of truly “observing an attitude.”
