Quotes of the day

posted at 10:50 pm on March 1, 2011 by Allahpundit

“A coalition of progressive Christian leaders has taken out a full-page ad that asks ‘What would Jesus cut?’ in Monday’s edition of Politico, the opening salvo in what the leaders say will be a broader campaign to prevent cuts for the poor and international aid programs amid the budget battle raging in Washington.

“‘They’re talking about cutting bed nets for malaria and leaving every piece of military spending untouched,’ said the Rev. Jim Wallis, who leads the Christian group Sojourners, referring to Republican spending proposals for the rest of this year.

“‘Are we saying that every piece of military equipment is more important than bed nets, children’s health and nutrition for low-income families?’ said Wallis, whose group paid for Monday’s ad. ‘If so they should be ashamed of themselves.’”

***
“There is no doubt we must get our fiscal house in order. It’s not optional. But the fact is that the money spent on U.S. anti-poverty programs makes a great deal more difference to low-income families than it would to reducing the deficit. The amounts add up to a drop in a sea of red budget ink. But for millions of low-income Americans, they mean the difference between running out of food before the end of the month, and eating well enough to do one’s best at school or work…

“When Jesus talked about how God will judge nations, he said God will focus on what we did or did not do for the neediest among us. Taking care of ‘the least of these’ should be among our nation’s top priorities. It should not be among the first of our responsibilities in line for cuts.

“I urge Congress not to attempt to balance the budget at the expense of vulnerable people. It won’t solve the problem, and it’s not what Jesus would do.”

***
“Even though the 533 billion dollar military budget is the elephant in the room and the gushing, bleeding wound of America’s deficit … it has been the sacred cow. But folks are beginning to whisper. I’m not sure about sacred cows making good hamburgers, but I do know that military money could make some good schools. And the Bible I read gives a powerful image of beating ‘swords into plowshares’ — taking things that have brought death and converting them into things that bring life. It seems the world may be poised and ready for that kind of conversion.

“So it’s not a bad moral gauge — What Would Jesus Do? Who Would Jesus Bomb? What Would Jesus Cut? The Jesus who loved the poor, challenged the rich, made friends with enemies, and healed the sick. So let’s ask it – WWJC? And let’s hope the politicians who claim to follow the Christ who carried good news for the poor will ask this little question as the debate goes on.”

***
“What these ‘progressive’ Christian leaders are doing is committing the same error that some on the so-called Religious Right did, which is to pretend that Scripture can be reduced to a governing blueprint. (In this instance, we’re asked to imagine Jesus as a liberal, big-spending director of the Office of Management and Budget.) The temptation of politically active people of faith is to simplistically connect dots, insisting that certain biblical principles self-evidently translate into particular public policies…

“The Christian ethicist Paul Ramsey wrote, ‘Identification of Christian social ethics with specific partisan proposals that clearly are not the only ones that may be characterized as Christian and as morally acceptable comes close to the original New Testament meaning of heresy.’

“That is what Wallis & Company are engaging in. To argue that their form of liberalism has the imprimatur of Jesus — and to argue the necessary corollary, which is that those who want to return spending levels to their pre-stimulus levels are being unfaithful to the commands of their Lord — is arrogant and harmful. It reduces faith to a political weapon. In their partisan zeal, these Christian leaders are discrediting the very faith they insist they are defending.”

***
“Yes, this debt is a mortal threat to our country. It is also a moral threat. It is immoral to bind our children to as leeching and destructive a force as debt. It is immoral to rob our children’s future and make them beholden to China. No society is worthy that treats its children so shabbily.”

I love the movie Caddyshack. One of my favorite comedies of all-time.

Bill Murray as Carl Spackler is a classic character.

This is my favorite scene. Maybe we need Carl Spackler to run in the GOP primary. Many are still looking for that ‘Cinderella Man’ to emerge out of nowhere.

The last thing Jesus would do is encourage Godless communism (the Welfare State excoriated by John Paul II in encyclicals) and the destruction of 53 million unborn or the wasting of His gifts by waiting around for a government check to arrive. The American Communist party has had the infiltration of religion and the destruction of the family and sexual morals as its goal for decades and this is nothing but more of the same.

Those who would forsake man’s eternal salvation for a big government paradise here on earth are quick to demand money for Caesar and ignore the moral corruption of the progressives.

Don L on March 2, 2011 at 6:55 AM

Christ didn’t need to concern himself about worldly things. He was more interested in saving people’s souls–something that this so-called Christian coalition ought to focus on–starting with their own.

zoyclem on March 2, 2011 at 6:58 AM

Just this past week, I received our Catholic newspaper that goes out to all families in the diocese and right on the front page was an article about the U.S. bishops sending a warning to congress that they should not think about balancing the budget on the backs of “refugees” (read illegals) and “third-world countries in need.” So now I guess it is the job of the U.S. to take care of the entire world even if it means that we end up being fiscally destroyed for it. I confess I quickly threw that paper into the trash.

“Caesar’s!” They replied. Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Matthew 22:21

Of course the context here is the Pharisees were trying to get Jesus with a catch 22. If he said “don’t pay taxes to Caesar” he gets into trouble with Romans and if he said “you must pay taxes to Caesar” he supported the Roman right to rule the Jews. Jesus’ answer in the general (using a denarius coin that was printed with Tiberius’ face and was for the sole purpose of paying taxes to Caesar) deflected both criticism and brought the focus back to God.

The answer can only be interpreted as “pay the taxes you owe.” This is not an endorsement of government run programs, or even of taxes. It was telling the Jews not to break the law.

Jesus might, if asked about cutting the budget, say “It is written, neither a borrower nor a lender be” and admonish us to pay off our legally bound debts. Though I imagine he may not even address the question directly as he did with the Pharisees. He’d likely tell us to focus on the work of God.

Either way, he was certainly no progressive liberal and the Bible in no way supports their positions.

Of course it does, in the same way Obama is a centrist and he really doesn’t want to run those car companies and banks and Obamacare really will bring down the deficit and insure good medical care for everyone.

SKYFOX on March 2, 2011 at 9:25 AM

Jesus didn’t ask the government to take care of the poor. He wants it to be people to people. You’d think those high priced preachers would know that.

mojo on March 2, 2011 at 11:12 AM

Well now, Rev. Jim (Wallis), how about you put your personal money where your loud mouth is? As it happens I believe the military IS more important than your chosen victim class. Use your own money to pay for their help. We’re trying to get the government down to a size that allows you the spare income to help others. The military may eventually have to be cut. When it is cut it should happen in such a way that your favored victim class can remain free and unthreatened by the likes of Al Qaeda, Iran, and others.

So go stuff your big government whining into the toilet where they belong. Use the one with the Qur’an in it. Yeah, that one over there.

Rev. Wallis…….

“We do not want word to get out that we want to exterminate the Negro population.”

The words above are the words of Margaret Sanger the Goddess of Planned Parenthood which is in the middle of exterminating the African American Community.

Can someone in the media hold these Progressives to account for their heroes words (and actions)? What if someone put up a billboard that talked about what’s going on in the Minority communities? Maybe that would help.

Rev. Wallis…………..WWJD about what’s going on with your silence on the issue of the African American Holocaust?

PappyD61 on March 2, 2011 at 1:48 PM

GOOGLE Margaret Sanger (I guess I can’t paste the text of her comments here after repeated attempts).

Wouldn’t it be nice if Wallis was more concerned with the deaths of 20 plus million innocent little babies?

PappyD61 on March 2, 2011 at 1:50 PM

It’s always amusing when so-called Christian democrats forget actual Scripture, when it’s convenient to do so. As follows:

Lev. 19:15
Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.
KJV

When Christ speaks of the “poor”, he often qualifies that word, including it as part of the phrase “poor in spirit” (see Matthew 5:3). He is not speaking of the economically deprived, but rather those spiritually put upon.

Thess. 3:10
For when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
KJV

And there’s the story of the contents of the Alabaster Box (Matt 26:7-15).
