Ted Kennedy, Party Man

posted at 2:55 pm on February 28, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

No doubt Judicial Watch’s release of old FBI files on Ted Kennedy will get a lot of attention on his partying ways, but that might miss the larger point.   It took JW three tries to get the FBI to release its unredacted files on Kennedy from a 1961 trip to Chile, Colombia, and other Latin America nations, which the FBI fought on grounds of national security.  When the redactions were finally removed, however, it seems clear that the FBI acted to protect Kennedy’s reputation rather than American security:

  • “While Kennedy was in Santiago he made arrangements to ‘rent’ a brothel for an entire night. Kennedy allegedly invited one of the Embassy chauffeurs to participate in the night’s activities.”
  • “[I]n each country Kennedy insisted on interviewing ‘the angry young men’ of the country. He wanted to meet with communists and others who had left-wing views. …Ambassador Freeman, Bogota, said the first person whom Kennedy wanted to meet was Lauchlin Currie.” (The document subsequently identifies Currie as a person who “had been mentioned in Washington investigations of Soviet spy rings.”)
  • “[I]n Mexico Kennedy asked Ambassador Mann that certain left-wingers be invited to the Embassy residence where interviews could be held. Mann took the strong position that he would not invite such people and stated that if any such interviews were to be conducted, all arrangements should be made by Kennedy himself.”

The more newsworthy mention might be that of the brothel rental, given Kennedy’s reputation.  On another level, though, one has to wonder what Kennedy was doing on the trip in the first place.  At the time, he had worked as an assistant DA in Suffolk County for a grand total of nine months, having started in February 1961.  What part of an assistant DA’s job requires a tour of Latin America, let alone brothels and interviews with “angry young men” of the Left?

The demand to meet with Lauchlin Currie is by far the most intriguing part of the document, and likely what the FBI preferred to keep quiet.  Currie had already been suspected for years of being a spy for the Soviet Union.  The US revoked the passport of the Canadian-born economist and former adviser to FDR in 1954 due to suspicions over his activities.  The VENONA intercepts mention Currie nine times, information which would have been available to Kennedy’s brothers John and Bobby at the time.

This incident recalls the contact between Kennedy in the 1980s with Yuri Andropov in seeking to undermine the Reagan administration in order to boost his chances for a 1984 presidential run:

Picking his way through the Soviet archives that Boris Yeltsin had just thrown open, in 1991 Tim Sebastian, a reporter for the London Times, came across an arresting memorandum. Composed in 1983 by Victor Chebrikov, the top man at the KGB, the memorandum was addressed to Yuri Andropov, the top man in the entire USSR. The subject: Sen. Edward Kennedy.

“On 9-10 May of this year,” the May 14 memorandum explained, “Sen. Edward Kennedy’s close friend and trusted confidant [John] Tunney was in Moscow.” (Tunney was Kennedy’s law school roommate and a former Democratic senator from California.) “The senator charged Tunney to convey the following message, through confidential contacts, to the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Y. Andropov.”

Kennedy’s message was simple. He proposed an unabashed quid pro quo. Kennedy would lend Andropov a hand in dealing with President Reagan. In return, the Soviet leader would lend the Democratic Party a hand in challenging Reagan in the 1984 presidential election. “The only real potential threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations,” the memorandum stated. “These issues, according to the senator, will without a doubt become the most important of the election campaign.”

If nothing else, this new file shows that Kennedy was at best a man with tremendously flawed judgment, and at worst, a malicious political opportunist willing to sell out anything for his own personal ambitions.  The brothel incident, by comparison, merely adds a little color to the legend, albeit shamelessly exploitative color.

To reference Jim Carrey’s impression of Teddy Chivas from about 15 years ago, he’s “a party animal and I have the court papers to prove it!”

I’m not particularly shocked at the kind of stuff that he did as much as that the FBI and the media have been so successful in covering up most of it.

They’re taking the signs from above, as the DOJ has been notorious about fast turnaround for selected group but intentionally stonewalling most other groups.

A lawyer with a lot of time on their hands could probably fund their entire practice just by sending in FOIA requests and then requesting monetary damages when the organizations refuse to even respond by the statutory deadline.

The (rotten) fruit didn’t fall far from the tree.

South of Port Everglades-Fort Lauderdale’s deep water port- there is an area once called Dania Beach. Adjacent, was a strip of water more recently re-named the Dania Cut-off Canal. When I was a wee small leprechaun, our Boy Scout Troop would go there to camp out. But back then it was known as Whiskey Creek. That wasn’t a nick-name, if you looked on any map of the area it showed Whiskey Creek. The name was a holdover from the rum-running days of prohibition. It was there that Joe Kennedy Senior began to make his money: by breaking the law. He was one of the rum-runners who would traffic whiskey in from the Bahamas, in violation of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United Staes of America, which banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol.

FDR appointed Joe Kennedy as Ambassador to the Court of Saint James in 1938.

Problems arose, however, because Kennedy was such an outspoken admirer of Chancellor Hitler that the Court of Saint James demanded FDR recall him. Kennedy was making public statements of admiration and praise for Hitler. Let that sink in. While Ambassador to an ally, Kennedy was singing the praises of the man who wanted to enslave our ally. He was praising the dictator who had forced a war with our ally. That one (or possibly more) of his sons loved murderous dictators should come as a surprise to no one, but it is nice to finally see it confirmed. Kennedy belongs right down there with Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

Gohawgs on February 28, 2011 at 4:49 PM

“While Kennedy was in Santiago he made arrangements to ‘rent’ a brothel for an entire night. Kennedy allegedly invited one of the Embassy chauffeurs to participate in the night’s activities.”

Let’s not just let that comment pass without a bit of reflection here. Kennedy was “renting” a ‘brothel” in a thrid world country – where, often, the “prostitutes” in such establishments are young girls taken from their family as “slaves” and put to work in these houses. Not only that – but it’s not unusual to find under age girls working there by force.

So in this … Kennedy is also guilty of supporting human trafficking and forced prostitution.

According to gvnet …

Chile is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and labor trafficking. Within the country, many victims are Chilean women and girls who respond to false job offers and subsequently are subjected to forced prostitution.

Slavery has a legacy in Chile. In the 1980s, during the former dictatorship, “dignity colonies” were operating. These were clandestine camps where many of the desparecidos (the ‘disappeared’ people) were sexually exploited and trapped in a system of forced labor. These were only recently discovered. The kinds of slavery that exist in Chile today also hardly receive any immediate media attention.

One study reported that 50 percent of foreign women working in eastern Santiago’s late-night establishments were victims of trafficking. Foreign women come to Santiago to look for work, and from Santiago they are trafficked to other parts of the country. Bolivian women and children are trafficked to Chile for prostitution and domestic work.

We always knew that Ted Kennedy was a manslaughterer, as well as a cowardly liar. Now we know he was even involved in supporting the modern day slave trade and sexual exploitation of women – possibly children also. This is not hyperbole – this is fact. There were NO “legitimate” brothels in Santiago at the time Kennedy visited it – they ALL trafficked in humans.

And let’s not forget Kennedy’s great speach against Roberrt Bork … in which he claimed that “women and minorities would not have equal rights in Robert Bork’s America”.
What gall.

Face it. When there are so-called Republicans that will help to lionize this piece of garbage, we can expect no better in our elected offices.

Massachusetts had Kennedy and Kerry for senators at the same time. Neither would be worth spitting on if they were on fire. Kennedy was a chronic alcoholic and Kerry is a traitor who lied about his service and marries rich widows.. Both dedicated their whole lives to their vices and the best interests of their state and country be damned. Just prime examples of the human trash that the mainstream media emulates and in turn reveals they are a propaganda sewer from where more scum will evolve.

The only reason the psycho Kennedy went to Chile in the first place was to have sex with the women and children forced into the sex trade. Sex at a cheap price and all the children to exploit sexually. Nothing in life could be better for trash like Kennedy. He really is an icon for the democrats and his representaive of every scumbag in their party.

If nothing else, this new file shows that Kennedy was at best a man with tremendously flawed judgment, and at worst, a malicious political opportunist willing to sell out anything for his own personal ambitions.

The guy was a traitor.

When the redactions were finally removed, however, it seems clear that the FBI acted to protect Kennedy’s reputation rather than American security:

You aren’t kidding. What is the deal with that? I also think that it is interesting that he did this during his brother’s administration. That might be why his journey appeared to be above his pay grade.

And the libs have said Obama is the last Kennedy brother? The politics are right. Wonder about the morals.

Come on–that’s a bit rich. Joe would just have found something else to found his fortune on.

Yes, and don’t forget RFK was Attorney General when JFK was President. No wonder this was buried. They were covering up for little bro.

I wonder what the outcry would be if the next Republican President were to remove a proven treasonous Kennedy from Arlington, by decree.
