Quotes of the day

posted at 9:00 pm on February 26, 2011 by Allahpundit

“In a White House statement on Obama’s telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Obama took his most direct position yet on the escalating violence in Libya.

“‘The president stated that when a leader’s only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now,’ it said.”

***
“Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton echoed Obama’s demand in a statement saying that Gadhafi’s government would he held ‘accountable for its violation of human rights.’

“‘Moammar Gadhafi has lost the confidence of his people and he should go without further bloodshed and violence,’ Clinton said in her statement.”

***
“Moammar Kadafi retained his stubborn grip on Tripoli on Saturday, blocking entry to the city with military tanks and clearing the streets of protesters with irregular security forces…

“‘Very few people want to demonstrate. There were so many people killed yesterday,’ Adel Ben Halim, a 48-year-old merchant in the capital, said in a phone interview. ‘It was beyond a massacre.’…

“‘Nine people were killed in just 15 minutes in a neighborhood on the east side of the city when eight mercenaries opened the back door [of an ambulance] and started shooting at the crowd,’ Ben Halim said. ‘They used the ambulance for the element of surprise.’”

***
“[T]he revolutionary forces will most certainly have to capture the capital, which means getting past the Gaddafi stronghold of Sert, and past the superior weaponry of Gaddafi’s loyalist forces and mercenaries in Tripoli itself. In recent days, Hussein has been placing calls to military officers and residents in Sert, which stands in between Benghazi and Tripoli. ‘We don’t want to treat them as they were treated before,’ he says, meaning inhumanely. ‘And we don’t want to behave like killers. So we made an appeal, as a warning, to allow us to move freely toward Tripoli.’

“In the past week, the eastern revolutionaries say, Gaddafi has been losing control of his country, one piece at a time. His forces, diplomats, ministers, and bureaucrats have fallen away. There is unity among the rebels, he says, as well as increasing determination to reach the end game. ‘We are preparing ourselves, and we will march to Tripoli to bombard Bab Bin Gashin,’ Hussein says, referring to Gaddafi’s Tripoli stronghold where he believes the ruler is hiding. ‘We have planes and pilots who were assigned by Gaddafi to bomb Benghazi, but who refused and landed here safely. We have pilots who are ready to crash their planes in a suicidal way if necessary.’

“Is the ultimate plan to kill Gaddafi, as many eager revolutionaries along the Mediterranean coast say? Hussein peers up over his rectangular reading glasses and offers a wry smile: ‘We hope to catch him alive.’”

Khanna: That’s often what happens with sanctions, unfortunately. Right now these are short-term kinds of sanctions. This is an effort to try to squeeze the man very quickly. This isn’t one of those things that is going to drag on for years and years, quite frankly, because he doesn’t have years left in his life. But that said, they’re going to have limited impact on the ground. Because right now, it’s not about money. It’s about how much weapons does he have, how many tribes does he control? That’s what matters more right now than whether or not we’ve frozen assets in Geneva.

Mitchell: If the sanctions don’t work, in your mind, what should the United States do?

Khanna: They’re going to have to consider more serious options. Flying to Geneva, the Human Rights Council, is one thing. And they can make statements and declarations. They’re going to have to consider more serious measures. They may have to support the potential independence, in fact, of the eastern half of the country, whose capital is Benghazi. That’s one scenario people were talking about. Potentially some kind of military intervention to try and sort of isolate him further within the capital. Or at least stop some of his military forces from conducting the raids and the assaults they are on the people. There’s still some options on the table. This is going to escalate before it deescalates.

“‘If you hear fireworks don’t mistake it for shooting,’ the 38-year-old London-educated younger Gadhafi said, smiling.”

UN Security Council backs sanctions against Libya

New York, Feb 27 (DPA) The UN Security Council late Saturday unanimously approved sanctions against Libya, including an arms embargo and the referral of the situation to International Criminal Court.

The council voted 15-0 to adopt Resolution 1970 imposing a comprehensive arms embargo, a travel ban and freeze of assets on the Gaddafi regime.

Council members called for the full implementation of the sanctions in an effort to stop Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi from further killing civilian protesters seeking his ouster.

Law enforcement officers know the difference between right and wrong, and Governor Walker’s attempt to eliminate the collective voice of Wisconsin’s devoted public employees is wrong,” continued Palmer. “That is why we have stood with our fellow employees each day and why we will be sleeping among them tonight.”

Here’s the thing, genius. It’s not your job to decide right from wrong; it is to enforce the laws that are on the books. That’s why they call it law enforcement. Simple, really. The officers are also vowing to sleep there until Walker capitulates to “Democracy”. Good Lord, are these people INSANE? How is this supposed to help them?

hboulware on February 26, 2011 at 10:21 PM

Is anyone here surprised at this? If you are you have been very naive. How are we going to get armed cops out of there?

This is good cause for the Governor to issue an executive order to decertify the police union, if he has the legal authority to do that.

Let the governors of all states take note, when you allow the police to unionize, you cannot rely on them to do their damn job.

Mr. Obama is unique as an American president. He really doesn’t give a crap about the country. Fortunately, no one is listening to him any longer domestically. His irrelevance internationally is dangerous, however, where people do listen and understand that he is an empty suit of the first order.

In all of the upheaval in the Middle East over the past two years, two examples in particular cry out for American presidential leadership: the revolt in Iran nearly two years ago, and the revolt today in Libya. In both cases, the regimes are enemies of the United States and state sponsors and exporters of terror; and they have revealed once again their brutality and totalitarianism by their willingness to slaughter their own people. In both cases, the people there have honestly had enough of their ruthless dictatorship and would really benefit from a few words of clear moral support from the President of the United States.

In both cases, instead of clarion calls of support for those aggrieved peoples, Obama has given them the silence of crickets and the remoteness of tumbleweeds.

When the 2009 Iranian revolt began, Obama spoke of an unwillingness to “meddle.” But he was more than happy to meddle in Egypt, one of our staunchest and longstanding allies, and throw Hosni Mubarak under the bus. He’s also more than willing to meddle in Israel on settlements and in the UK by giving away their nuclear secrets to the Russians, and on and on. He meddles when he wants to.

But he will not “meddle” when it matters most and costs the least: against terrorist regimes like Iran and Libya. Whose side is he on? Seriously.

(Monica Crowley)

What is justice?

If Barry were to walk out of the Oval Office, head down to the 7-11, pull a Glock out, cap the cashier and grab a fistful of cash then a sentence of 25 to life would be justice. Can we agree on that?

But the thing is that our stability as a Republic rests upon the peaceful transfer of power.

Jimmy Carter sitting behind Ronald Reagan on January 20, 1981.

George W. Bush sitting behind Barack Obama on January 20, 2009.

Even when the wheels fall off the ship of state* we rely upon the peaceful transfer of power – think of the photographs of Truman’s swearing in, or of LBJ standing next to a blood spattered Jackie Kennedy, we had peaceful transfer of power.

The goal is to have Barack Obama sitting behind Sarah Palin on January 20, 2013 (or insert your favorite candidate in her place – you get my drift) as she thunders away on the abject evil that the previous administration had wrought, and the dawning of a new era that promises to live up to the ideals of July 4, 1776.

…and you don’t believe we’re on the Eve of Destruction.

kingsjester on February 26, 2011 at 10:41 PM

I’ll see your Barry McGuire and raise you a Neil Peart:

I will choose a path that’s clear
I will choose freewill.

Ironic, isn’t it? McGuire wrote a protest song about Vietnam and the Cold War, but it is those who sang and danced to his music that have brought this misery upon us – their utopia. And Peart is a Canadian that I am quoting to advance an American ideal.

* I just had to leave that alone – it’s so awful that its beautiful. I’m sure Yogi Berra would be proud of me.

The president stated that when a leader’s only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now,’ it said.

But apparently not financial violence, like stealing their money or enslaving them. Apparently ODumbAss is ok with that. Do you know what I mean?

And the witch’s statement about “confidence?” that is omg stupid. Helllllooooo, earth to Harridan1 the guy is a dictator… confidence not in the job description.

The ODumbAss administration, going the extra light year into stupid just for you.

Funny,

when someone becomes a political liability for the Community Organizer of the United States (COOTUS)

they all end up in the same place,

under the bus,

isn’t it.

I mean, after all, Gadhafi is a Comrade-in-Arms of Jeremiah Wright and Louis Farrakhan.

That might explain the 12 day delay.
