Videos: Another union-activist assault, and protester tells dissenter “You are a bad Jew!”

posted at 12:55 pm on February 24, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Oh, the irony in this clip, on which our Green Room contributor Lori Ziganto has already commented. Why, pray tell, is this counter-protester a “bad Jew” in the estimation of this activist from the Communication Workers of America? Because he’s not, er, healing the world.  No, seriously:

Note that this exchange started with a union activist implying that the counterprotesters were racists because of a supposed lack of diversity.  Given this incident yesterday, the expropriation of the Holocaust by union protesters in Madison, and the response above, this appears to be a case of projection at best.

Speaking of which, will the Left rise as one to denounce the inherent bigotry and violence of union protests as demonstrated in this video from the Boss Emeritus?  Please note the de rigeur Official Content Warning as a protester calls a public-access reporter a “faggot” and then curiously offers to “f**k you in the ass,” which also appears to be a case of projection.  The fun assault starts at 7:32 in the clip:

Union activists — they can shut down state legislatures, hijack public policy, explain Nazi history as entirely a union-opposition movement, assault people on the street, and can give a qualitative estimation of Jewishness in an instant.  Is there anything they can’t do?  Well, except for that whole healing-the-world thing, of course.

I think that Jim Geraghty underestimated the irony value of these union protests.  It goes way beyond 1.21 gigawatts.

Update: Be sure to read this post by my friend John Hinderaker at Power Line at the unhinged attacks on the Koch brothers as well.  A sample:

A day doesn’t go by–hardly an hour goes by–without some new attack being launched against these two lonely libertarians.

Why? Simply because they are rich–their company is one of the best-run and most successful in the world–and conservative. The Left is trying to drive them out of politics and, more important, to deter any other people of means from daring to support conservative politicians or causes.

Understand, the Left has nothing against rich people participating in politics. Most rich people who are politically active are liberals, and the Democratic Party gets much more of its support from the wealthy than the GOP. George Soros is only the most famous of a battalion of sugar daddies who fund every left-wing cause. But the Left wants a monopoly. They want wealthy people to be barred from political participation unless they toe the liberal line. Hence their increasingly vicious attacks on the Koch brothers; they are trying to make an example of them.

John has plenty more, so RTWT.

Update II: Two quick points about the second video.  The union protester is alleged to have shoved the cameraman, although some in the comments say they can’t see that here.  Check Michelle’s blog for more details.  Second, the legal definition of assault is the credible threat of violence; if fulfilled, it becomes assault and battery.  Telling a reporter to leave or “I’ll f*** you in the ass” is assault all on its own.  Almost twenty years ago, I testified in a misdemeanor assault trial in a case with no physical contact between the perpetrator and the victim, and the defendant was convicted of the charge.

You are not allowed to physically contact someone else, nor threaten to do so, with the intent to do harm, unless you’re acting in self-defense.

Update III: I’ve been apprised of a factual error made in two posts today.  It was not 1.2 gigawatts in Back to the Future, it was 1.21 gigawatts.  The fact that I’ve gotten this correction from multiple sources tells me one thing … you’re my kind of people.

Nope. What I’m saying is that unions possess a broad cross-section of society, including some people who know how to fight. There are occasionally going to be some people who act out illegally. It’s unfortunate and no help to us, but that’s reality.

bifidis on February 24, 2011 at 1:40 PM

You chose the Former Special Forces member demographic as those who could be violent. I found it very telling that you would equate members of our armed forces as those who could be potentially violent during protest.

Tell us, why do you justify a felony by a protester to defend bargaining rights, and not say….an anti-abortion protester bombing an empty abortion clinic.

portlandon on February 24, 2011 at 1:46 PM

Please note the de rigeur Official Content Warning as a protester calls a public-access reporter a “faggot” and then curiously offers to “f**k you in the ass,”

What always fascinates me is how lefties claim to be so inclusive and tolerant and abhor “discrimination” against homosexuals, yet so often use derogatory terms to insinuate that someone is homosexual in order to offend or insult them.

Could it be that they are, in so doing, revealing their actual attitudes and thereby also revealing the truth that, at the very best, they don’t give a damn about homosexuals, and really just want to use them as pawns in their little political games? Isn’t that the ultimate “discrimination”?

Heh. That’s why many clueless young people eventually abandon their “progressive” ways when they get older and get a clue. Young people overwhelmingly vote Democrat because they don’t know any better. With age usually comes wisdom and a mass migration to conservative values. How does that jibe exactly with your statement?

The fact is that most protest gatherings are going to include some uncouth and aggressively rude jerks. It has been the leftists however who have attempted to make such a weapon out of incidents when an opponent gets out of line while ignoring their own. That is the nature of the hypocrisy.

Most people are fed up with the unions and their whole rotten payola structure. As for teachers, the student test scores are dropping while the teacher’s income swells. The unions have such a strangle hold on public education that no reforms can be implemented. They are no longer working it the best interests of education or the country. It is all about soaking the system for money and kicking it back to the democrats.

People need to look at the government as the tax payers advocate, not the trough sloppers advocate.

“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” – Barack Obama

“It’s a leap, electing a 46-year-old black guy named Barack Obama,” he said, noting that the message Republicans have for voters is simple: “He doesn’t look like all those other presidents on the dollar bill.”

There’s a big difference between targeting the behavior of a major figurehead or leader, on either the right or left, and writing a ‘story’ that’s based on what a single, randoms person who attends a rally says or does.

You can find thousands of ‘union supporters’, ‘Reagan supports’, ‘Obama supporters’, or ‘Bush supporters’ who are psychotics, nuts, bigots, and child molesters… but that doesn’t make the behavior of these random individuals ‘news’. Nor does their behavior demonstrate your moral superiority or the superiority of your cause.

While it’s fine to take issue with Maher, this isn’t the best fight to pick. In reality, the Fathers were a group of overly-educated intellectuals who quoted other philosophers and intellectuals from Greek and Roman civilizations far more than any religious text. In other words, it’s undoubtedly true that the Fathers would see Palin and other Tea Partiers as boorish illiterates, relatively speaking, and would have no interest in recognizing or responding to their tedious and vapid rhetoric.

Bait much, troll? You come on here every day and call names, and then act shocked when somebody ‘finally’ calls you a name in return. And then you play victim while secretly gleeful that you managed to bait someone.

Passive-aggressive is a psychologically flawed approach, my friend.

Seek help.

You start messing with collective bargaining rights, and you’re going to see an element come out that isn’t trained in the niceties of “proper” protesting, who don’t subscribe to some Toby Keith universe of fake “workin’ man” BS. You might get some men who served in Special Forces and like to work with their hands. Could there be some brawling? Maybe. Is it right? No. But let’s be realistic, people, and quit acting shocked and offended.

I do read — a lot. Last night I was deep into James Jones.

bifidis on February 24, 2011 at 2:35 PM

Most non-Jews don’t know that the idea of “tikkun olam” or repairing the world is fairly central to the religion of a majority of non-Orthodox Jews. I have had similar arguments to the “bad Jew” argument. Admittedly, I tend to provoke them with statements like “the best form of tikkun olam is often benign neglect.”

“Tikkun Olam” comes from a type of Jewish mysticism called Kabbalah, which you have heard of because the singer Madonna indulges in it. Most Reconstructionist/Reform/Conservative Jews who invoke tikkun olam are utterly ignorant about the rest of Kabbalah beyond one song sung on Friday evenings, “L’cha Dodi”. They are politically perverting a concept from a set of ideas they don’t care about.

In terms of my personal practice, I only accept the concepts that Maimonides, 12th century Jewish sage, would be comfortable with, and he was no fan of mysticism. Even some of the early sages opposed mysticism. Ben Sira wrote “You shall have no business with secret things” more than a century before the birth of Jesus. Thus, “tikkun olam” is not part of my personal Reform Judaism. I believe in the separation of religion and politics.

It is Oppressive-Leftists like you that are pushing this narrative – while at the same time attempting to repress free-speech with all the ‘New Civility’ talk, so don’t be blaming this on those of us on the Liberty side of the equation.

Union activists — they can shut down state legislatures, hijack public policy, explain Nazi history as entirely a union-opposition movement, assault people on the street, and can give a qualitative estimation of Jewishness in an instant. Is there anything they can’t do?

Based on your description, Ed, I’d say actual work.
